Numerical solutions of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations are reported for the interior of a rotating, perfectly-conducting, rigid spherical shell that is insulator-coated on the inside. A previously-reported spectral method is used which relies on a Galerkin expansion in Chandrasekhar-Kendall vector eigenfunctions of the curl. The new ingredient in this set of computations is the rigid rotation of the sphere. After a few purely hydrodynamic examples are sampled (spin down, Ekman pumping, inertial waves), attention is focused on selective decay and the MHD dynamo problem. In dynamo runs, prescribed mechanical forcing excites a persistent velocity field, usually turbulent at modest Reynolds numbers, which in turn amplifies a small seed magnetic field that is introduced. A wide variety of dynamo activity is observed, all at unit magnetic Prandtl number. The code lacks the resolution to probe high Reynolds numbers, but nevertheless interesting dynamo regimes turn out to be plentiful in those parts of parameter space in which the code is accurate. The key control parameters seem to be mechanical and magnetic Reynolds numbers, the Rossby and Ekman numbers (which in our computations are varied mostly by varying the rate of rotation of the sphere) and the amount of mechanical helicity injected. Magnetic energy levels and magnetic dipole behavior are exhibited which fluctuate strongly on a time scale of a few eddy turnover times. These seem to stabilize as the rotation rate is increased until the limit of the code resolution is reached.

The effect of precession in a rotating sphere filled with fluid was studied with direct numerical simulations, both in the incompressible hydrodynamics (HD) and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) scenarios. In both cases the asymptotic state and its dependence with both rotating and precession frequency was analyzed. For the MHD case no self-sustaining dynamos were found for the prograde precession case, whereas on the other hand a critical retrograde precession frequency was found above which dynamo action is self-sustained. It was also found that these correspond to small-scale dynamos with a develo…
In hydrodynamic turbulence, the kinetic energy injected at large scales cascades to the inertial range, leading to a constant kinetic energy flux. In contrast, in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, a fraction of kinetic energy is transferred to the magnetic energy. Consequently, for the same kinetic energy injection rate, the kinetic energy flux in MHD turbulence is reduced compared to its hydrodynamic counterpart. This leads to relative weakening of the nonlinear term ($\la | ({\bf u}\cdot \nabla) {\bf u} | \ra$, where ${\bf u}$ is the velocity field) and turbulent drag, but strengthening …
This article deals with rotating magnetohydrodynamic flows of a thin stratified layer of astrophysical plasma in a gravitational field with a free-surface in a vertical external magnetic field. Magnetohydrodynamic equations are obtained in the two-layer shallow water approximation in an external magnetic field when plasma is divided into two layers of different densities. In the beta-plane approximation a system of shallow water equations for rotating stratified plasma in an external magnetic field is obtained. For stationary initial conditions in the form of vertical or horizontal magnetic fi…
In this paper, an energy-consistent finite difference scheme for the compressible hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations is introduced. For the compressible magnetohydrodynamics, an energy-consistent finite difference formulation is derived using the product rule for the spatial difference. The conservation properties of the internal, kinetic, and magnetic energy equations can be satisfied in the discrete level without explicitly solving the total energy equation. The shock waves and discontinuities in the numerical solution are stabilized by nonlinear filtering schemes. An energ…
In hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, expressions for the transfer rates rely on integrals over wavenumber triads $(\textbf{k,p,q})$ satisfying $\textbf{k+p+q=0}$. As an example $S_E^{uu}(\textbf{k|p,q})$ denotes the kinetic energy transfer rate to the mode $\textbf{k}$, from the two other modes in the triad, $\textbf{p}$ and $\textbf{q}$. As noted by Kraichnan (1958), in $S_E^{uu}(\textbf{k|p,q})$, what fraction of the energy transferred to the mode $\textbf{k}$ originated from $\textbf{p}$ and which from $\textbf{q}$ is unknown . Such an expression is thus incongruent with the …
We report on simulations of laboratory experiments in which magnetized supersonic flows are driven through a wire mesh. The goal of the study was to investigate the ability of such a configuration to generate supersonic, MHD turbulence. We first report on the morphological structures that develop in both magnetized and non-magnetized cases. We then analyze the flow using a variety of statistical measures, including power spectra and probability distribution functions of the density. Using these results we estimate the sonic mach number in the flows downstream of the wire mesh. We find the init…

In this article, the hydrodynamic characteristics of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are investigated and analyzed under the influence of rotating flow fields, that were generated in a recirculating water tank via a rotating propeller. Initially, experiments were carried out for the measurement of flow field variables and Quantities of Interest across the AUV in the presence of the rotating propeller while varying the rotational speed and the extent of rotational flow strength. The flow field across the AUV was measured using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). These measured turbulen…
Wave scattering phenomena are ubiquitous in almost all Sciences, from Biology to Physics. Interestingly, it has been shown many times that different physical systems are the stage to the same processes. The discoveries of such analogies have resulted in a better understanding of Physics and are indications of the universality of Nature. One stunning example is the observation that waves propagating on a flowing fluid effectively experience the presence of a curved space-time. In this thesis we will use this analogy to investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, fundamental effects occu…
Stably stratified layers are present in stellar interiors (radiative zones) as well as planetary interiors - recent observations and theoretical studies of the Earth's magnetic field seem to indicate the presence of a thin, stably stratified layer at the top of the liquid outer core. We present direct numerical simulations of this region, which is modelled as an axisymmetric spherical Couette flow for a stably stratified fluid embedded in a dipolar magnetic field. For strong magnetic fields, a super-rotating shear layer, rotating nearly 30% faster than the imposed rotation rate difference betw…
