For understanding magnetic effects on dynamical tides, we study the rotating magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) flow driven by harmonic forcing. The linear responses are analytically derived in a periodic box under the local WKB approximation. Both the kinetic and Ohmic dissipations at the resonant frequencies are calculated and the various parameters are investigated. Although magnetic pressure may be negligible compared to thermal pressure, magnetic field can be important for the first-order perturbation, e.g. dynamical tides. It is found that magnetic field splits the resonant frequency, namely the rotating hydrodynamic flow has only one resonant frequency but the rotating MHD flow has two, one positive and the other negative. In the weak field regime the dissipations are asymmetric around the two resonant frequencies and this asymmetry is more striking with a weaker magnetic field. It is also found that both the kinetic and Ohmic dissipations at the resonant frequencies are inversely proportional to the Ekman number and the square of wavenumber. The dissipation at the resonant frequency on small scales is almost equal to the dissipation at the non-resonant frequencies, namely the resonance takes its effect on the dissipation at intermediate length scales. Moreover, the waves with phase propagation perpendicular to magnetic field are much more damped. It is also interesting to find that the frequency-averaged dissipation is constant. This result suggests that in compact objects magnetic effects on tidal dissipation should be considered.
We study the effect of dynamical tides associated with the excitation of gravity waves in an interior radiative region of the central star on orbital evolution in observed systems containing Hot Jupiters. We consider WASP-43, Ogle-tr-113, WASP-12, and WASP-18 which contain stars on the main sequence (MS). For these systems there are observational estimates regarding the rate of change of the orbital period. We also investigate Kepler-91 which contains an evolved giant star. We adopt the formalism of Ivanov et al. for calculating the orbital evolution. For the MS stars we determine expected rat…
By numerically solving the equations of rotating magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), the magnetic effect on dynamical tide is studied. It is found that magnetic field has a significant impact not only on the flow structure, i.e. the internal shear layers in rotating flow can be destroyed in the presence of a moderate or stronger magnetic field (in the sense that the Alfvén velocity is at least of the order of 0.1 of the surface rotational velocity), but also on the dispersion relation of waves excited by tidal force such that the range of tidal resonance is broadened by magnetic field. A major result …
Large-scale planetary or stellar magnetic fields generated by a dynamo effect are mostly attributed to flows forced by buoyancy forces in electrically conducting fluid layers. However, these large-scale fields may also be controlled by tides, as previously suggested for the star $τ$-boo, Mars or the Early Moon. By simulating a small local patch of a rotating fluid, \cite{Barker2014} have recently shown that tides can drive small-scale dynamos by exciting a hydrodynamic instability, the so-called elliptical (or tidal) instability. By performing global magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a rotati…
Tidal dissipation in compact white dwarf (WD) binary systems significantly influences the physical conditions (such as surface temperature and rotation rate) of the WDs prior to mass transfer or merger. In these systems, the dominant tidal effects involve the excitation of gravity waves and their dissipation in the outer envelope of the star. We calculate the amplitude of tidally excited gravity waves in low-mass (0.3M_\odot) helium-core (He) WDs as a function of the tidal forcing frequency ω. Like carbon-oxygen (CO) WDs studied in our previous paper, we find that the dimensionless tidal torqu…
The reliable characterization of planetary atmospheres with transmission spectroscopy requires realistic modeling of stellar magnetic features, since features that are attributable to an exoplanet atmosphere could instead stem from the host star's magnetic activity. Current retrieval algorithms for analysing transmission spectra rely on intensity contrasts of magnetic features from 1D radiative-convective models. However, magnetic features, especially faculae, are not fully captured by such simplified models. Here we investigate how well such 1D models can reproduce 3D facular contrasts, takin…
Duo to the large magnetic Reynolds number, the magnetic helicity originating from the solar interior can be carried away through the photosphere into the corona. However, the relationship between the accumulated magnetic helicity flux through the photosphere and the magnetic helicity in the corona is still unclear. By selecting 36 newly emerging active regions in the 23rd solar cycle, we apply optical flow methods to derive the accumulated magnetic helicity through the photosphere ($H_m^p$) by using the sequential longitudinal magnetograms, use nonlinear force-free field extrapolation to obtai…
Understanding structures and evolutions of the magnetic fields and plasma in multiple layers on the Sun is very important. A force-free magnetic field which is an accurate approximation of the solar corona due to the low plasma $β$ has been widely studied and used to model the coronal magnetic structure. While the force-freeness assumption is well satisfied in the solar corona, the lower atmosphere is not force-free given the high plasma $β$. Therefore, a magnetohydrostatic (MHS) equilibrium which takes into account plasma forces, such as pressure gradient and gravitational force, is considere…
Young planets with masses approaching Jupiter's have tides strong enough to clear gaps around their orbits in the protostellar disk. Gas flow through the gaps regulates the planets' further growth and governs the disks' evolution. Magnetic forces may drive that flow if the gas is sufficiently ionized to couple to the fields. We compute the ionizing effects of the X-rays from the central young star, using Monte Carlo radiative transfer calculations to find the spectrum of Compton-scattered photons reaching the planet's vicinity. The scattered X-rays ionize the gas at rates similar to or greater…
Aims. Linear magnetohydrostatic (MHS) models of solar magnetic fields balance plasma pressure gradients, gravity and Lorentz forces where the current density is composed of a linear force-free component and a cross-field component that depends on gravitational stratification. In this paper, we investigate an efficient numerical procedure for calculating such equilibria. Methods. The MHS equations are reduced to two scalar elliptic equations - one on the lower boundary and the other within the interior of the computational domain. The normal component of the magnetic field is prescribed on the …
It is generally believed that the evolution of magnetic helicity has a close relationship with solar activity. Before the launch of SDO, earlier studies have mostly used MDI/SOHO line of sight magnetograms and assumed that magnetic fields are radial when calculating magnetic helicity injection rate from photospheric magnetograms. However, this assumption is not necessarily true. Here we use the vector magnetograms and line of sight magnetograms, both taken by HMI/SDO, to estimate the effects of non-radial magnetic field on measuring magnetic helicity injection rate. We find that: 1) The effect…

We study the coupling of magneto-acoustic waves to Alven waves using 2.5D numerical simulations. In our experiment, a fast magnetoacoustic wave of a given frequency and wavenumber is generated below the surface. The magnetic field in the domain is assumed homogeneous and inclined. The efficiency of the conversion to Alfven waves near the layer of equal acoustic and Alfven speeds is measured calculating their energy flux. The particular amplitude and phase relations between the oscillations of magnetic field and velocity help us to demonstrate that the waves produced after the transformation an…
Large-scale magnetic fields thread through the electrically conducting matter of the interplanetary and interstellar medium, stellar interiors, and other astrophysical plasmas, producing anisotropic flows with regions of high-Reynolds-number turbulence. It is common to encounter turbulent flows structured by a magnetic field with a strength approximately equal to the root-mean-square magnetic fluctuations. In this work, direct numerical simulations of anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence influenced by such a magnetic field are conducted for a series of cases that have identical res…

Recent advances in spectropolarimetry have allowed the reconstruction of stellar coronal magnetic fields. This uses Zeeman-Doppler magnetograms of the surface magnetic field as a lower boundary condition. The ZDI maps, however, suffer from the absence of information about the magnetic field over regions of the surface due to the presence of dark starspots and portions of the surface out of view due to a tilt in the rotation axis. They also suffer from finite resolution which leads to small scale field structures being neglected. This paper explores the effects of this loss of information on th…
This article reproduces the Karl Schwarzschild lecture 2013. Some of the basic ideas of electrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics of mean fields in turbulently moving conducting fluids are explained. It is stressed that the connection of the mean electromotive force with the mean magnetic field and its first spatial derivatives is in general neither local nor instantaneous and that quite a few claims concerning pretended failures of the mean-field concept result from ignoring this aspect. In addition to the mean-field dynamo mechanisms of $α^2$ and $α$ $Ω$ type several others are considered. Mu…
Inversion techniques applied to the radiative transfer equation for polarized light are capable of inferring the physical parameters in the solar atmosphere (temperature $T$, magnetic field ${\bf B}$, and line-of-sight velocity $v_{\rm los}$) from observations of the Stokes vector (i.e., spectropolarimetric observations) in spectral lines. Inferences are usually performed in the $(x,y,τ_c)$ domain, where $τ_c$ refers to the optical-depth scale. Generally, their determination in the $(x,y,z)$ volume is not possible due to the lack of a reliable estimation of the gas pressure, particularly in re…
The rotation period of some planet-hosting stars appears to be in close commensurability with the orbital period of their close-by planets. A model is proposed to interpret such a phenomenon based on the excitation of resonant oscillations in the interior magnetic field of the star by a component of the tidal potential with a very low frequency in the reference frame rotating with the star. A magnetic flux tube located in the overshoot layer of the star is assumed to study the excitation of the resonant oscillations in the magnetostrophic regime. The model considers a planet on a circular obli…
We show that grains streaming through a fluid are generically unstable if their velocity, projected along some direction, matches the phase velocity of a fluid wave (linear oscillation). This can occur whenever grains stream faster than any fluid wave. The wave itself can be quite general--sound waves, magnetosonic waves, epicyclic oscillations, and Brunt-Väisälä oscillations each generate instabilities, for example. We derive a simple expression for the growth rates of these "resonant drag instabilities" (RDI). This expression (i) illustrates why such instabilities are so virulent and generic…
