We study the performance and limitations of a coherent interface between collective atomic states and single photons. A quantized spin-wave excitation of an atomic sample inside an optical resonator is prepared probabilistically, stored, and adiabatically converted on demand into a sub-Poissonian photonic excitation of the resonator mode. The measured peak single-quantum conversion efficiency of 0.84(11) and its dependence on various parameters are well described by a simple model of the mode geometry and multilevel atomic structure, pointing the way towards implementing high-performance stationary single-photon sources.
Frequency comb based multidimensional coherent spectroscopy is a novel optical method that enables high resolution measurement in a short acquisition time. The method's resolution makes multidimensional coherent spectroscopy relevant for atomic systems that have narrow resonances. We use double-quantum multidimensional coherent spectroscopy to reveal collective hyperfine resonances in rubidium vapor at 100 C induced by dipole-dipole interactions. We observe tilted lineshapes in the double-quantum 2D spectra, which has never been reported for Doppler-broadened systems. The tilted lineshapes sug…
Enhancing the optical cross section is an enticing goal in light-matter interactions, due to its fundamental role in quantum and non-linear optics. Here, we show how dipolar interactions can suppress off-axis scattering in a two-dimensional atomic array, leading to a subradiant collective mode where the optical cross section is enhanced by almost an order of magnitude. As a consequence, it is possible to attain an optical depth which implies high fidelity extinction, from a monolayer. Using realistic experimental parameters, we also model how lattice vacancies and the atomic trapping depth aff…
XUV nonlinear spectroscopy has recently discovered that there is more than one collective dipole resonance state in the energy range of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) of atomic Xe. This resonance-state substructure, hidden in the linear regime, raises imminent questions regarding our understanding of the collective electronic behavior of Xe, which has been largely founded on linear spectroscopic studies. Here, we approach the collective response of Xe from a new perspective: we study directly the resonance eigenstates, and then analyze their spectroscopic manifestations. We find that linear …
We show that atomic motion leads not only to noticeable quantitative, but in some cases also to qualitative modification of collective effects in dense and cold atomic ensembles even in the case when the characteristic Doppler shifts are tens of times smaller than the natural linewidth. The observed influence is explained as a result of the suppression of the impact of sub-radiant collective states caused by the displacement of the atoms.

We describe a collective state atomic interferometer (COSAIN) with the signal fringe as a function of phase-difference or rotation narrowed by $\sqrt{N}$ compared to a conventional interferometer - $N$ being the number of atoms - without entanglement. This effect arises from the interferences among collective states, and is a manifestation of interference at a Compton frequency of ten nonillion Hz, or a de Broglie wavelength of ten attometer, for $N=10^6$ and $v = 300 m/s$. The population of the collective state of interest is detected by a null measurement scheme, in which an event correspond…
We investigate collective emission from coherently driven ultracold $ ^{88} $ Sr atoms. We perform two sets of experiments, using a strong and weak transition that are insensitive and sensitive, respectively, to atomic motion at one microKelvin. We observe highly directional forward emission with a peak intensity that is enhanced, for the strong transition, by > $ 10 ^3 $ compared to that in the transverse direction. This is accompanied by substantial broadening of spectral lines. For the weak transition, the forward enhancement is substantially reduced due to motion. Meanwhile, a density-depe…
We describe a collective state atomic clock with Ramsey fringes narrowed by a factor of $\sqrt{N}$ compared to a conventional clock, N being the number of non-interacting atoms, without violating the uncertainty relation. This narrowing is explained as being due to interferences among the collective states, representing an effective $\sqrt{N}$ fold increase in the clock frequency, without entanglement. The detection process, which measures a collective state, can be used to increase the quantum efficiency of detection significantly, yielding a net improvement in stability by as much as a facto…
Ordered atomic arrays trapped in the vicinity of nanoscale waveguides offer original light-matter interfaces, with applications to quantum information and quantum non-linear optics. Here, we study the decay dynamics of a single collective atomic excitation coupled to a waveguide in different configurations. The atoms are arranged as a linear array and only a segment of them is excited to a superradiant mode and emits light into the waveguide. Additional atomic chains placed on one or both sides play a passive role, either reflecting or absorbing this emission. We show that when varying the geo…
We investigate the collective scattering of coherent light from a thermal alkali-metal vapor with temperatures ranging from 350 to 450 K, corresponding to average atomic spacings between $0.7 λ$ and $0.1 λ$. We develop a theoretical model treating the atomic ensemble as coherent, interacting, radiating dipoles. We show that the two-time second-order correlation function of a thermal ensemble can be described by an average of randomly positioned atomic pairs. Our model illustrates good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, we show how fine-tuning of the experimental parameters m…
We measure the near-resonant transmission of light through a dense medium of potassium vapor confined in a cell with nanometer thickness in order to investigate the origin and validity of the collective Lamb-shift. A complete model including the multiple reflections in the nano-cell accurately reproduces the observed strong asymmetry of the line shape and allows extraction of a density dependent shift of the atomic resonance. We observe an additional, unexpected dependence of this shift with the thickness of the medium. This extra dependence demands further experimental and theoretical investi…
We experimentally demonstrate the generation of heralded bi-chromatic single photons from an atomic collective spin excitation (CSE). The photon arrival times display collective quantum beats, a novel interference effect resulting from the relative motion of atoms in the CSE. A combination of velocity-selective excitation with strong laser dressing and the addition of a magnetic field allows for exquisite control of this collective beat phenomenon. The present experiment uses a diamond scheme with near-IR photons that can be extended to include telecommunications-wavelengths or modified to all…
We have studied collective recoil lasing by a cold atomic gas, scattering photons from an incident laser into many radiation modes in free space. The model consists of a system of classical equations for the atomic motion of N atoms, where the radiation field has been adiabatically eliminated. We performed numerical simulations using a molecular dynamics code, Pretty Efficient Parallel Coulomb Solver or PEPC, to track the trajectories of the atoms. These simulations show the formation of an atomic density grating and collective enhancement of scattered light, both of which are sensitive to the…
Spontaneous four-wave mixing can generate highly correlated photon pairs from atomic vapors. We show that multi-photon pumping of dipole-forbidden transitions in a recoil-free geometry can result in ultra-bright pair-emission in the full 4πsolid angle, while strongly suppresses background Rayleigh scattering and associated atomic heating, Such a system can produce photon pairs at rates of ~ 10 ^12 per second, given only moderate optical depths of 10 ~ 100, or alternatively, the system can generate paired photons with sub-natural bandwidths at lower production rates. We derive a rate-equation b…
We implement dynamic control of a superradiant, cold atom $^{87}$Rb Raman laser to realize the equivalent of conditional Ramsey spectroscopy for sensing atomic phase shifts. Our method uses the non-demolition mapping of the collective quantum phase of an ensemble of two-level atoms onto the phase of a detected cavity light field. We show that the fundamental precision of the non-demolition measurement can theoretically approach the standard quantum limit on phase estimation for a coherent spin state, the traditional benchmark for Ramsey spectroscopy. Finally, we propose a hybrid optical lattic…
The collective effect of large amounts of atoms exhibit an enhanced interaction between light and atoms. This holds great interest in quantum optics, and quantum information. When a collective excited state of a group of atoms during Rabi oscillation is varying, the oscillation exhibits rich dynamics. Here, we experimentally observe a size-reduction effect of the Rydberg collective state during Rabi oscillation in cold atomic dilute gases. The Rydberg collective state was first created by the Rydberg quantum memory, and we observed a decreased oscillation frequency effect by measuring the time…
We report the observation of double-quantum coherence signals in a gas of potassium atoms at twice the frequency of the one-quantum coherences. Since a single atom does not have a state at the corresponding energy, this observation must be attributed to a collective resonance involving multiple atoms. These resonances are induced by weak inter-atomic dipole-dipole interactions, which means that the atoms cannot be treated in isolation, even at a low density of $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$.
The coherent dipole-dipole interactions of atoms in an atomic array are studied. It is found that the excitation probability of an atom in an array parallel to the direction of laser propagation ($\boldsymbol{\hat{k}}$) will either grow or decay logarithmically along $\boldsymbol{\hat{k}}$, depending on the detuning of the laser. The symmetry of the system for atomic separations of $δr = jλ/2$, where $j$ is an integer, causes the excitation distribution and scattered radiation to abruptly become symmetric about the center of the array. For atomic separations of $δr < λ/2$, the appearance of a …
We observe effects of collective atomic motion in a one-dimensional optical lattice coupled to an optomechanical system. In this hybrid atom-optomechanical system, the lattice light generates a coupling between the lattice atoms as well as between atoms and a micromechanical membrane oscillator. For large atom numbers we observe an instability in the coupled system, resulting in large-amplitude atom-membrane oscillations. We show that this behavior can be explained by light-mediated collective atomic motion in the lattice, which arises for large atom number, small atom-light detuning and asymm…
We investigate the behavior of an ensemble of $N$ non-interacting, identical atoms, excited by a laser. In general, the $i$-th atom sees a Rabi frequency $Ω_i$, an initial position dependent laser phase $ϕ_i$, and a motion induced Doppler shift of $δ_i$. When $Ω_i$ or $δ_i$ is distinct for each atom, the system evolves into a superposition of $2^N$ intercoupled states, of which there are $N+1$ symmetric and $(2^N-(N+1))$ asymmetric collective states. For a collective state atomic interferometer (COSAIN) we recently proposed, it is important to understand the behavior of all the collective stat…
We report on the observation of quantum interference of a collective single spin excitation with a spin ensemble of $N_{\text{atom}} =10^5$ atoms. Detection of a single photon scattered from the atoms creates the single spin excitation, a Fock state embedded in the collective spin of the ensemble. The state of the atomic ensemble is then detected by tomography via a quantum non-demolition measurement of the collective spin. A macroscopic difference of the order of $\sqrt{N_{\text{atom}}}$ in the marginal distribution of the collective spin state arises from the interference between the single …
The interaction of light with an atomic sample containing a large number of particles gives rise to many collective (or cooperative) effects, such as multiple scattering, superradiance and subradiance, even if the atomic density is low and the incident optical intensity weak (linear optics regime). Tracing over the degrees of freedom of the light field, the system can be well described by an effective atomic Hamiltonian, which contains the light-mediated dipole-dipole interaction between atoms. This long-range interaction is at the origin of the various collective effects, or of collective exc…
We demonstrate collectively enhanced vacuum-induced quantum beat dynamics from a three-level V-type atomic system. Exciting a dilute atomic gas of magneto-optically trapped $^{85}$Rb atoms with a weak drive resonant on one of the transitions, we observe the forward-scattered field after a sudden shut-off of the laser. The subsequent radiative dynamics, measured for various optical depths of the atomic cloud, exhibits superradiant decay rates, as well as collectively enhanced quantum beats. Our work is also the first experimental illustration of quantum beats arising from atoms initially prepar…
Subwavelength atomic arrays, recently labeled as quantum metamaterials, have emerged as an exciting platform for obtaining novel quantum optical phenomena. The strong interference effects in these systems generate subradiant excitations that propagate through the atomic array with very long lifetimes. Here, we demonstrate that one can harness these excitations to obtain tunable directional emission patterns and collective dissipative couplings when placing judiciously additional atoms nearby the atomic array. For doing that, we first characterize the optimal array geometry to obtain directiona…
We directly measure the quantized collective motion of a gas of thousands of ultracold atoms, coupled to light in a high-finesse optical cavity. We detect strong asymmetries, as high as 3:1, in the intensity of light scattered into low- and high-energy motional sidebands. Owing to high cavity-atom cooperativity, the optical output of the cavity contains a spectroscopic record of the energy exchanged between light and motion, directly quantifying the heat deposited by a quantum position measurement's backaction. Such backaction selectively causes the phonon occupation of the observed collective…
We demonstrate continuous measurement and coherent control of the collective spin of an atomic ensemble undergoing Larmor precession in a high-finesse optical cavity. The coupling of the precessing spin to the cavity field yields phenomena similar to those observed in cavity optomechanics, including cavity amplification, damping, and optical spring shifts. These effects arise from autonomous optical feedback onto the atomic spin dynamics, conditioned by the cavity spectrum. We use this feedback to stabilize the spin in either its high- or low-energy state, where, in equilibrium with measuremen…
We study the dynamics of a single collective excitation in a cold ensemble of atoms coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. The coupling between the atoms and the photonic modes provides a coherent and a dissipative dynamics for this collective excitation. While the dissipative part accounts for the collectively enhanced and directed emission of photons, we find a remarkable universal dynamics for increasing atom numbers exhibiting several revivals under the coherent part. While this phenomenon provides a limit on the intrinsic dephasing for such a collective excitation, a setup is presented, …
We investigate laser-induced quantum interference phenomena in superradiance processes and in an ensemble of initially excited $Λ-$type closely packed three-level emitters. The lower doublet levels are pumped with a coherent laser field. Due to constructive quantum interference effects, the superradiance occurs on a much weaker atomic transition which is not the case in the absence of the coherent driving. This result may be of visible relevance for enhancing ultraweak transitions in atomic or atomic-like systems, respectively, or for high-frequency lasing effects.
We experimentally study resonant light scattering by a one-dimensional randomly filled chain of cold two-level atoms. By a local measurement of the light scattered along the chain, we observe constructive interferences in light-induced dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms. They lead to a shift of the collective resonance despite the average interatomic distance being larger than the wavelength of the light. This result demonstrates that strong collective effects can be enhanced by structuring the geometrical arrangement of the ensemble. We also explore the high intensity regime where a…
Enhancement of the sensitivities of optical magnetometers, atomic clocks and atom interferometers and other quantum metrology devices requires introducing new physical processes to improve on their present achievements. Many body collective correlations among the atoms, spins or, in general, quantum systems may prove to be a suitable method. As these correlations introduce interference terms in the intensity of the scattering amplitudes, they may enhance the signal as $N(N-1)$ for N correlated quantum systems. These correlations enhance the signal to noise ratio by a factor of $N^2$ and contri…
We use coherent excitation of 3-16 atom ensembles to demonstrate collective Rabi flopping mediated by Rydberg blockade. Using calibrated atom number measurements, we quantitatively confirm the expected $\sqrt{N}$ Rabi frequency enhancement to within 4%. The resulting atom number distributions are consistent with essentially perfect blockade. We then use collective Rabi $π$ pulses to produce ${\cal N}=1,2$ atom number Fock states with fidelities of 62% and 48% respectively. The ${\cal N}=2$ Fock state shows the collective Rabi frequency enhancement without corruption from atom number fluctuatio…
We study the contributions of off-resonant transitions to the dynamics of a system of N multilevel atoms sharing one excitation and interacting with the quantized vector electromagnetic field. The Rotating Wave Approximation significantly simplifies the derivation of the equations of motion describing the collective atomic dynamics, but it leads to an incorrect expression for the dispersive part of the atom-atom interaction terms. For the case of two-level atoms and a scalar electromagnetic field, it turns out that the atom-atom interaction can be recovered correctly if integrals over the phot…
Fully inverted atoms placed at exactly the same location synchronize as they deexcite, and light is emitted in a burst (known as "Dicke's superradiance"). We investigate the role of finite interatomic separation on correlated decay in mesoscopic chains, and provide an understanding in terms of collective jump operators. We show that the superradiant burst survives at small distances, despite Hamiltonian dipole-dipole interactions. However, for larger separations, competition between different jump operators leads to dephasing, suppressing superradiance. Collective effects are still significant…
Cooperative scattering has been the subject of intense research in the last years. In this article, we discuss the concept of cooperative scattering from a broad perspective. We briefly review the various collective effects that occur when light interacts with an ensemble of atoms. We show that some effects that have been recently discussed in the context of 'single-photon superradiance', or cooperative scattering in the linear-optics regime, can also be explained by 'standard optics', i.e., using macroscopic quantities such as the susceptibility or the diffusion coefficient. We explain why so…
The collective dynamics of mobile scatterers and light in optical resonators generates complex behaviour. For strong transverse illumination a phase transition from homogeneous to crystalline particle order appears. In contrast, a gas inside a single-side pumped ring cavity exhibits an instability towards bunching and collective acceleration called collective atomic recoil lasing (CARL). We demonstrate that by driving two orthogonally polarized counter propagating modes of a ring resonator one realises both cases within one system. The corresponding phase diagram depending on the two pump inte…
The interaction between an atomic ensemble and a light mode in a high-finesse optical cavity can easily reach the strong-coupling regime, where quantum effects dominate. In this regime, the interaction can be used to generate both atom-light and atom-atom entanglement. We analyze the dominant effects on the collective atomic state and the light field, and derive a unified approach that can account for atomic entanglement induced both by measurements on the light field, and by ignoring the state of the light field altogether. We present analytical expressions for the entanglement induced by the…
We study the collective response of a dense atomic sample to light essentially exactly using classical-electrodynamics simulations. In a homogeneously broadened atomic sample there is no overt Lorentz-Lorenz local field shift of the resonance, nor a collective Lamb shift. However, addition of inhomogeneous broadening restores the usual mean-field phenomenology.
Two-dimensional regular arrays of atoms are a promising platform for quantum networks, with collective subradiant states providing long-lived storage and collimated emission allowing for natural coherent links between arrays in free space. However, a single-layer lattice can only efficiently absorb or emit light symmetrically in the forward and backward directions. Here we show how a bilayer lattice can absorb a single photon either incident from a single direction or an arbitrary superposition of forward and backward propagating components. The excitation can be stored in a subradiant state, …
