Silicon based micropattern detectors are essential elements of modern high energy physics experiments. Cost effectiveness and high radiation resistance are two important requirements for technologies to be used in inner tracking devices. Processes based on p-type substrates have very strong appeal for these applications. Recent results and prototype efforts under way are reviewed.

Development of Edgeless Silicon Pixel Sensors on p-type substrate for the ATLAS High-Luminosity Upgrade

In view of the LHC upgrade for the High Luminosity Phase (HL-LHC), the ATLAS experiment is planning to replace the Inner Detector with an all-Silicon system. The n-in-p bulk technology represents a valid solution for the modules of most of the layers, given the significant radiation hardness of this option and the reduced cost. Sensitivity optimization of micro-machined thermo-resistive flow-rate sensors on silicon substrates

We report on an optimized micro-machined thermal flow-rate sensor as part of an autonomous multi-parameter sensing device for water network monitoring. The sensor has been optimized under the following constraints: low power consumption and high sensitivity, while employing a large thermal conductivity substrate, namely silicon. Design and Fabrication of a Highly Integrated Silicon Detector for the STAR Experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory

We present the design of a detector used as a particle tracking device in the STAR experiment at the RHIC collider of Brookhaven National Laboratories. The "stave," 24 of which make up the completed detector, is a highly mechanically integrated design comprised of 6 custom silicon sensors mounted on a Kapton substrate. 4608 wire bonds connect these sensors to 36 analog front-end chips which are mounted on the same substrate. Characterization of silicon microstrip sensors for space astronomy

Silicon microstrip detectors are widely used in experiments for space astronomy. Before the detector is assembled, extensive characterization of the silicon microstrip sensors is indispensable and challenging. This work electrically evaluates a series of sensor parameters, including the depletion voltage, bias resistance, metal strip resistance, total leakage current, strip leakage current, coupling capacitance, and interstrip capacitance. Graphenic Carbon-Silicon Contacts for Reliability Improvement of Metal-Silicon Junctions

Contact resistance and thermal degradation of metal-silicon contacts are challenges in nanoscale CMOS as well as in power device applications. Titanium silicide (TiSi) contacts are commonly used metal-silicon contacts, but are known to diffuse into the active region under high current stress. In this paper we show that a graphenic carbon (C) contact deposited on n-type silicon (C-Si) by CVD, has the same low Schottky barrier height of 0.45 eV as TiSi, but a much improved reliability against high current stress.
