In this letter a pinch velocity of toroidal momentum is shown to exist for the first time. Using the gyro-kinetic equations in the frame moving with the equilibrium toroidal velocity, it is shown that the physics effect can be elegantly formulated through the ``Coriolis'' drift. A fluid model is used to highlight the main coupling mechanisms between the density and temperature perturbations on the one hand and the perturbed parallel flow on the other. Gyro-kinetic calculations are used to accurately asses the magnitude of the pinch. The pinch velocity leads to a radial gradient of the toroidal velocity profile even in the absence of a torque on the plasma. It is shown to be sizeable in the plasmas of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) leading to a moderately peaked rotation profile. Finally, the pinch also affects the interpretation of current experiments.
A recent study [1] about the scaling with the aspect ratio (i.e. the ratio between the major and minor radius of the torus) of the dominant mode in Single Helical (SH) Reverse Field Pinch (RFP) plasmas has shown, at intermediate aspect ratio, that the dominant toroidal mode number in the helical states can be interpreted as the result of a relaxation process. In this work, the theoretical model is compared and validated with the experimental data obtained in the low aspect ratio RELAX device [2]. [1] R. Paccagnella, Phys. of Plasmas 23 (2016) 092512. The Dimits shift, an upshift in the onset of turbulence from the linear instability threshold, caused by self-generated zonal flows, can greatly enhance the performance of magnetic confinement plasma devices. Except in simple cases, using fluid approximations and model magnetic geometries, this phenomenon has proved difficult to understand and quantitatively predict. To bridge the large gap in complexity between simple models and realistic treatment in toroidal magnetic geometries (e.g. tokamaks or stellarators), the present work uses fully gyrokinetic simulations in Z-pinch geometry to invest…
It is found that the Lorentz force generated by the magnetic drift drives a generic plasma pinch fluxes of particle, energy and momentum through the Stokes-Einstein relation. The proposed theoretical model applies for both electrons and ions, trapped particles and passing particles.

The relaxation of a helical magnetic field ${\bf B}({\bf x}, t)$ in a high-conductivity plasma contained in the annulus between two perfectly conducting coaxial cylinders is considered. The plasma is of low density and its pressure is negligible compared with the magnetic pressure; the flow of the plasma is driven by the Lorentz force and and energy is dissipated primarily by the viscosity of the medium. The axial and toroidal fluxes of magnetic field are conserved in the perfect-conductivity limit, as is the mass per unit axial length. The magnetic field relaxes during a rapid initial stage t…
A general formulation of the problem of calculating the spectrum of stable and unstable eigenmodes of linearized perturbations about a magnetically confined toroidal plasma is presented. The analysis is based on a new hydromagnetic dynamical model, Multi-region Relaxed Magnetohydrodynamics (MRxMHD), which models the plasma-magnetic field system as consisting of multiple regions, containing compressible Euler fluid and Taylor-relaxed magnetic field, separated by flexible ideal-MHD current sheets. This is illustrated using a first-principles analysis of a two-region slab geometry, with periodic …
We derive the balance equation for the Favre averaged angular momentum in toroidal not necessarily axisymmetric magnetic field equilibria. We find that the components of angular momentum are given by the covariant poloidal and toroidal components of ExB and parallel flow velocities and we separately identify all relevant stress tensors, torques and source terms for each of these components. Our results feature the Favre stress generalisations of previously found Reynolds stresses like the diamagnetic or parallel ExB stress, as well as the density gradient drive term. Further, we identify the m…
Programmable control of the inductive electric field enables advanced operations of reversed-field pinch (RFP) plasmas in the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) device and further develops the technical basis for ohmically heated fusion RFP plasmas. MST's poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields ($B_\text{p}$ and $B_\text{t}$) can be sourced by programmable power supplies (PPSs) based on integrated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT). In order to provide real-time simultaneous control of both $B_\text{p}$ and $B_\text{t}$ circuits, a time-independent integrated model is developed. The actuators considered…
The Multi-region Relaxed MHD (MRxMHD) has been successful in the construction of equilibria in three-dimensional (3D) configurations. In MRxMHD, the plasma is sliced into sub-volumes separated by ideal interfaces, each undergoing relaxation, allowing the formation of islands and chaos. The resulting equilibrium has a stepped pressure profile across sub-volumes. The Stepped Pressure Equilibrium Code (SPEC) [S.R. Hudson et al., Phys. Plasmas 19, 112502 (2012)] was developed to calculate MRxMHD equilibria numerically. In this work, we have extended the SPEC code to compute MRxMHD equilibria with …
The momentum conservation law for general dissipationless reduced-fluid (e.g., gyrofluid) models is derived by Noether method from a variational principle. The reduced-fluid momentum density and the reduced-fluid canonical momentum-stress tensor both exhibit polarization and magnetization effects as well as an internal torque associated with dynamical reduction. As an application, we derive an explicit gyrofluid toroidal angular-momentum conservation law for axisymmetric toroidal magnetized plasmas.
The characteristic profile and magnitude are predicted in theory for the neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) torque induced by plasma response to the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) in a tokamak with an edge pedestal. For a low-$β$ equilibrium, the NTV torque is dominated by the toroidal component with the same dominant toroidal mode number of RMP. The NTV torque profile is found to be localized, whose peak location is determined by profiles of both the equilibrium temperature (pressure) and the plasma response. In general, the peak of NTV torque profile is found to track the pedestal p…
The gyrokinetic toroidal code (GTC) has been upgraded for global simulations by coupling the core and scrape-off layer (SOL) regions across the separatrix with field-aligned particle-grid interpolations. A fully kinetic particle pusher for high frequency waves (ion cyclotron frequency and beyond) and a guiding center pusher for low frequency waves have been implemented using cylindrical coordinates in a global toroidal geometry. The two integrators correctly capture the particle orbits and agree well with each other, conserving energy and canonical angular momentum. As a verification and appli…
Neutral atoms can strongly influence the intrinsic rotation and radial electric field at the tokamak edge. Here, we present a framework to investigate these effects when the neutrals dominate the momentum transport. We explore the parameter space numerically, using highly flexible model geometries and a state of the art kinetic solver. We find that the most important parameters controlling the toroidal rotation and electric field are the major radius where the neutrals are localized and the plasma collisionality. This offers a means to influence the rotation and electric field by, for example,…
The confinement of Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) particles in the presence of n=3 Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) in 15 MA ITER DT plasmas has been studied using full orbit ASCOT simulations. Realistic NBI distribution functions, and 3D wall and equilibria, including the plasma response to the externally applied 3D fields calculated with MARS-F, have been employed. The observed total fast-ion losses depend on the poloidal spectra of the applied n=3 RMP as well as on the absolute toroidal phase of the applied perturbation with respect to the NBI birth distribution. The absolute toroidal p…
