The understanding of the mechanisms responsible for particle transport is of the utmost importance for magnetized fusion plasmas. A peaked density profile is attractive to improve the fusion rate, which is proportional to the square of the density, and to self-generate a large fraction of non-inductive current required for continuous operation. Experiments in various tokamak devices (AUG, DIII-D, JET, TCV, TEXT, TFTR) have indicated the existence of an anomalous inward particle pinch. Recently, such an anomalous pinch has been unambiguously identified in Tore Supra very long discharges, in absence of toroidal electric field and of central particle source, for more than 4 minutes [1]. This anomalous particle pinch is predicted by a quasilinear theory of particle transport [2], and confirmed by non-linear turbulence simulations [3] and general considerations based on the conservation of motion invariants [4]. Experimentally, the particle pinch is found to be sensitive to the magnetic field gradient in many cases [5, 6, 7, 8], to the temperature profile [5, 9] and also to the collisionality that changes the nature of the microturbulence [10, 11, 12]. The consistency of some of the observed dependences with the theoretical predictions gives us a clearer understanding of the particle pinch in tokamaks, allowing us to predict more accurately the density profile in ITER.
Magnetized inertial fusion experiments are approaching regimes where the radial transport is dominated by collisions between magnetized ions, providing an opportunity to exploit effects usually associated with steady-state magnetic fusion. In particular, the low-density hotspot characteristic of magnetized liner inertial fusion results in diamagnetic and thermal frictions which can demix thermalized ash from fuel, accelerating the fusion reaction. For reactor regimes in which there is substantial burnup of the fuel, increases in the fusion energy yield on the order of 5% are possible.
We analyze how the turbulent transport of $\mathbf{E}\times \mathbf{B}$ type in magnetically confined plasmas is affected by intermittent features of turbulence. The latter are captured by the non-Gaussian distribution $P(ϕ)$ of the turbulent electric potential $ϕ$. Our analysis is performed at an analytical level and confirmed numerically using two statistical approaches. We have found that the diffusion is inhibited linearly by intermittency, mainly via the kurtosis of the distribution $P(ϕ)$. The associated susceptibility for this linear process is shown to be dependent on the poloidal velo…
When turbulent structures split more frequently before they decay, persistent turbulence forms in neutral fluid shear flows. Whether this concept can be extended to linear magnetized plasmas is investigated here and compared to the behavior of the pipe flow. With increasing control parameter the dynamics in the magnetized plasmas is known to undergo several changes from a quasiperiodic to a phase locked to a weakly turbulent regime. When the phase-locked regime breaks down, the splitting time approaches the decreasing lifetime reflecting self-sustained turbulence, as known from the pipe flow.
We identify the desired characteristics and parameters of a beta>1 magnetized plasma, possibly with highly tangled, open field lines, that could be a suitable target to be compressed to fusion conditions by a spherically imploding plasma liner [S. C. Hsu et al., IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. 40, 1287 (2012)] formed by merging hypersonic plasma jets. This concept is known as plasma-jet-driven magneto-inertial fusion (PJMIF). We set requirements on the target and liner such that (a) compressional heating dominates over thermal transport in the target, and (b) magnetic amplification due to compression …
Interstellar gas clouds are often both highly magnetized and supersonically turbulent, with velocity dispersions set by a competition between driving and dissipation. This balance has been studied extensively in the context of gases with constant mean density. However, many astrophysical systems are contracting under the influence of external pressure or gravity, and the balance between driving and dissipation in a contracting, magnetized medium has yet to be studied. In this paper we present three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of compression in a turbulent, magnetized…

This whitepaper was submitted to the 2019-2020 APS-DPP-CPP (American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics Community Planning Process) on plasma discovery science. It highlights the need for diverse computational approaches including global and local models, as well as the need for a hierarchy of physics models in complex and multi-scale magnetically and flow-dominated astrophysical systems. Examples of turbulent small-scale vs. large-scale dynamos and turbulent vs. ordered zonal flows in such systems are discussed.

The scaling of turbulent heat flux with respect to electrostatic potential is examined in the framework of a reduced ($4$D) kinetic system describing electrostatic turbulence in magnetized plasmas excited by the ion temperature gradient instability. Numerical simulations were instigated by, and tested the predictions of generic renormalized turbulence models like the $2$D fluid model for electrostatic turbulence [Y.~Z.~Zhang and S.~M.~Mahajan, Phys.~Fluids B 5 (7), pp.~2000 (1993)]. A fundamental, perhaps, universal result of this theory-simulation combination is the demonstration that there e…
Thermal fusion plasmas initiated by standing whistler waves are investigated numerically by two- and one-dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations. When a standing whistler wave collapses due to the wave breaking of ion plasma waves, the energy of the electromagnetic waves transfers directly to the ion kinetic energy. Here we find that the ion heating by the standing whistler wave is operational even in multi-dimensional simulations of multi-ion species targets, such as deuterium-tritium (DT) ices and solid ammonia borane (H$_6$BN). The energy conversion efficiency to ions becomes as high as 15…
Plasma turbulence simulations are often computationally expensive with delicate numerical stability. Yet, long simulations are needed to generate uncorrelated turbulence data for studies such as microwave scattering through density perturbations. For this reason, alternative methods of producing accurate synthetic turbulence profiles via statistical methods is of interest. Such a method is proposed where the two-point covariance function of the desired turbulence is used to construct a multi-variate normal distribution. Sampling from this distribution produces random fields which are both qual…
Resonant three-wave coupling is an important mechanism via which waves interact in a nonlinear medium. When the medium is a magnetized warm-fluid plasma, a previously-unknown formula for the coupling coefficients is derived by solving the fluid-Maxwell's equations to second order using multiscale perturbative expansions. The formula is not only general but also evaluable, whereby numerical values of the coupling coefficient can be determined for any three resonantly interacting waves propagating at arbitrary angles. As one example, coupling coefficient governing laser scattering is evaluated. …
One of the most intensely studied aspects of magnetic confinement fusion is edge plasma turbulence which is critical to reactor performance and operation. Drift-reduced Braginskii two-fluid theory has for decades been widely applied to model boundary plasmas with varying success. Towards better understanding edge turbulence in both theory and experiment, we demonstrate that physics-informed neural networks constrained by partial differential equations can accurately learn turbulent fields consistent with the two-fluid theory from just partial observations of a synthetic plasma's electron densi…
Rutherford scattering formula plays an important role in plasma classical transport. It is urgent to need a magnetized Rutherford scattering formula since the magnetic field increases significantly in different fusion areas (e.g. tokamak magnetic field, self-generated magnetic field, and compressed magnetic field). The electron-ion Coulomb collisions perpendicular to the external magnetic field are studied in this paper. The scattering angle is defined according to the electron trajectory and asymptotic line (without magnetic field). A magnetized Rutherford scattering formula is obtained analy…
The kinetic damping mechanism of low frequency transverse perturbations propagating parallel to the magnetic field in a magnetized warm electron plasma is simulated by means of electromagnetic (EM) Vlasov simulations. The short-time-scale damping of the electron magnetohydrodynamic whistler perturbations and underlying physics of finite electron temperature effect on its real frequency are recovered rather deterministically, and analyzed. The damping arises from an interplay between a global (prevailing over entire phase-space) and the more familiar resonant-electron-specific kinetic damping m…
