One of the most intensely studied aspects of magnetic confinement fusion is edge plasma turbulence which is critical to reactor performance and operation. Drift-reduced Braginskii two-fluid theory has for decades been widely applied to model boundary plasmas with varying success. Towards better understanding edge turbulence in both theory and experiment, we demonstrate that physics-informed neural networks constrained by partial differential equations can accurately learn turbulent fields consistent with the two-fluid theory from just partial observations of a synthetic plasma's electron density and temperature in contrast with conventional equilibrium models. These techniques present a novel paradigm for the advanced design of plasma diagnostics and validation of magnetized plasma turbulence theories in challenging thermonuclear environments.
A new model for the joint neutrino flavor and plasma oscillations is introduced, in terms of the dynamics of the neutrino flavor polarization vector in a plasma background. Fundamental solutions are found for both time-invariant and time-dependent media, considering slow and fast variations of the electron plasma density. The model is shown to be described by a generalized Hamiltonian formalism. In the case of a broad spectrum of electron plasma waves, a statistical approach indicate the shift of both equilibrium value and frequency oscillation of flavor coherence, due to the existence of a tu…
Turbulent transport of trace impurities impurities in the edge and scrape-off-layer of tokamak fusion plasmas is modelled by three dimensional electromagnetic gyrofluid computations including evolution of plasma profile gradients. The source function of impurity ions is dynamically computed from pre-determined measured and calculated electron impact ionization cross section data. The simulations describe the generation and further passive turbulent E-cross-B advection of the impurities by intermittent fluctuations and coherent filamentary structures (blobs) across the scrape-off-layer.
It is found that the Lorentz force generated by the magnetic drift drives a generic plasma pinch fluxes of particle, energy and momentum through the Stokes-Einstein relation. The proposed theoretical model applies for both electrons and ions, trapped particles and passing particles.
Two analytical models for the ordinary mode propagating through inhomogeneous edge plasma layer are developed. Simple analytical expressions for diffusion-like angular and spatial beam width variation are obtained and compared to time-averaged results coming from 2D Maxwell's equations solver for different turbulence k-spectra and plasma conditions. The strong spatial broadening of microwave beam is predicted by the two approaches at realistic turbulent edge parameters for ECRH experiments at ITER.
The power of second harmonic electromagnetic emission is calculated for the case when strong plasma turbulence is excited by a powerful electron beam in a magnetized plasma. It is shown that the simple analytical model of strong plasma turbulence with the assumption of a constant pump power is able to explain experimentally observed bursts of electromagnetic radiation as a consequence of separate collapse events. It is also found that the electromagnetic emission power calculated for three-wave interaction processes occurring in the long-wavelength part of turbulent spectrum is in order-of-mag…
The ion kinetic energy in a stagnating plasma was previously determined by Kroupp et al. (Kroupp et al., 2011), from Doppler-dominated lineshapes augmented by measurements of plasma properties and assuming a uniform-plasma model. Notably, the energy was found to be dominantly stored in hydrodynamic flow. Here, we advance a new description of this stagnation as supersonically turbulent. Such turbulence implies a non-uniform density distribution. We demonstrate how to re-analyze the spectroscopic data consistent with the turbulent picture, and show this leads to better concordance of the overcon…
Observational evidence in space and astrophysical plasmas with long collisional mean free path suggests that more massive charged particles may be preferentially heated. One possible mechanism for this is the turbulent cascade of energy from injection to dissipation scales, where the energy is converted to heat. Here we consider a simple system consisting of a magnetized plasma slab of electrons and a single ion species with a cross-field density gradient. We show that such a system is subject to an electron drift wave instability, known as the universal instability, which is stabilized only w…
The narrow power decay-length ($λ_q$), recently found in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of inner-wall limited (IWL) discharges in tokamaks, is studied using 3D, flux-driven, global two-fluid turbulence simulations. The formation of the steep plasma profiles measured is found to arise due to radially sheared $\vec{E}\times\vec{B}$ poloidal flows. A complex interaction between sheared flows and outflowing plasma currents regulates the turbulent saturation, determining the transport levels. We quantify the effects of sheared flows, obtaining theoretical estimates in agreement with our non-linear simu…
We present a simple model for the turbulent kinetic energy behavior of subsonic plasma turbulence undergoing isotropic three-dimensional compression, such as may exist in various inertial confinement fusion experiments or astrophysical settings. The plasma viscosity depends on both the temperature and the ionization state, for which many possible scalings with compression are possible. For example, in an adiabatic compression the temperature scales as $1/L^2$, with $L$ the linear compression ratio, but if thermal energy loss mechanisms are accounted for, the temperature scaling may be weaker. …
Wave-particle interaction in toroidal plasmas is an essential transport mechanism in drift wave instability-driven microturbulence. In tokamkas, different wave-particle resonance conditions have been found important for the energy and particle transport of multiple species in various drift wave turbulences. To confirm the transport mechanism for electrons and ions in tokamak drift-wave instabilities, the effect of wave-particle resonance on turbulent transport is studied using global gyrokinetic particle simulations of the plasma core ion temperature gradient (ITG) and collisionless trapped el…
We analyze how the turbulent transport of $\mathbf{E}\times \mathbf{B}$ type in magnetically confined plasmas is affected by intermittent features of turbulence. The latter are captured by the non-Gaussian distribution $P(ϕ)$ of the turbulent electric potential $ϕ$. Our analysis is performed at an analytical level and confirmed numerically using two statistical approaches. We have found that the diffusion is inhibited linearly by intermittency, mainly via the kurtosis of the distribution $P(ϕ)$. The associated susceptibility for this linear process is shown to be dependent on the poloidal velo…
Nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations have been conducted to investigate turbulent transport in tokamak plasmas with rotational shear. At sufficiently large flow shears, linear instabilities are suppressed, but transiently growing modes drive subcritical turbulence whose amplitude increases with flow shear. This leads to a local minimum in the heat flux, indicating an optimal E x B shear value for plasma confinement. Local maxima in the momentum fluxes are also observed, allowing for the possibility of bifurcations in the E x B shear. The sensitive dependence of heat flux on temperature gradient i…
First principle gyrokinetic simulation of the edge turbulent transport in toroidal plasmas finds a reverse trend in the turbulent transport coefficients under strong gradients. It is found that there exist both linear and nonlinear critical gradients for the nonmonotonicity of transport characteristics. The discontinuity of transport flux slope around the turning gradient shows features of second order phase transition. Under strong gradient the most unstable modes are in non-ground eigenstates with unconventional mode structures, which significantly reduces the effective correlation length an…
A novel methodology to analyze non-Gaussian probability distribution functions (PDFs) of intermittent turbulent transport in global full-f gyrokinetic simulations is presented. In this work, the Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model is applied to time series data of intermittent turbulent heat transport to separate noise and oscillatory trends, allowing for the extraction of non-Gaussian features of the PDFs. It was shown that non-Gaussian tails of the PDFs from first principles based gyrokinetic simulations agree with an analytical estimation based on a two fluid model.
This work addresses linear transport in turbulent media, with emphasis on neutral particle (atoms, molecules) transport in magnetized fusion plasmas. A stochastic model for turbulent plasmas, based upon a multivariate Gamma distribution, is presented. The geometry is a 2D slab and turbulence is assumed to be statistically homogeneous. The average neutral density and ionization source, which are the quantities relevant for integrated simulations and diagnostic applications, are calculated analytically in the scattering free case. The boundary conditions and the ratio of the turbulence correlati…
Advective nature of the electrostatic turbulent flux of plasma energy is studied numerically in a nearly adiabatic state. Such a state is represented by the Hasegawa-Mima equation that is driven by a noise that may model the destabilization due to the phase mismatch of the plasma density and the electric potential. The noise is assumed to be Gaussian and not to be invariant under reflection along a direction $\hat s$. It is found that the flux density induced by such noise is anisotropic: While it is random along $\hat s$, it is not along the perpendicular direction ${\hat s}_\perp$ and the fl…
The effect of magnetic turbulence in shaping the current density in axisymmetric magnetized plasma is analyzed using a turbulent extension of Ohm's law derived from the self-consistent action-angle transport theory. Besides the well-known hyper-resistive (helicity-conserving) contribution, the generalized Ohm's law contains an anomalous resistivity term, and a turbulent bootstrap-like term proportional to the current density derivative. The numerical solution of the equation for equilibrium and turbulence profiles characteristic of conventional and advanced scenarios shows that, trough "turbul…
We study a complex plasma under microgravity conditions that is first stabilized with an oscillating electric field. Once the stabilization is stopped, the so-called heartbeat instability develops. We study how the kinetic energy spectrum changes during and after the onset of the instability and compare with the double cascade predicted by Kraichnan and Leith for two-dimensional turbulence. The onset of the instability manifests clearly in the ratio of the reduced rates of cascade of energy and enstrophy and in the power-law exponents of the energy spectra.
Three-dimensional numerical simulations of decaying turbulence in a magnetized plasma are performed using a so-called FLR-Landau fluid model which incorporates linear Landau damping and finite Larmor radius (FLR) corrections. It is shown that compared to simulations of compressible Hall-MHD, linear Landau damping is responsible for significant damping of magnetosonic waves, which is consistent with the linear kinetic theory. Compressibility of the fluid and parallel energy cascade along the ambient magnetic field are also significantly inhibited when the beta parameter is not too small. In con…
The ratio of ion to electron heating due to the dissipation of Alfvenic turbulence in astrophysical plasmas is calculated based on a cascade model for turbulence in weakly collisional plasmas. Conditions for validity of this model are discussed, a prescription for the turbulent heating is presented, and it is applied to predict turbulent heating in accretion disks and the interstellar medium.
A process specific to the dynamics of the heavy impurities in turbulent tokamak plasmas is found and analysed. We show that the parallel stochastic acceleration is strongly coupled to the perpendicular transport and generates a radial pinch velocity. The interaction is produced with the hidden drifts, a quasi-coherent component of the motion that consists of a pair of average radial velocities in opposite directions. The parallel acceleration breaks this symmetry and yields a radial average velocity that can be in the inward or outward direction. The transport of the tungsten ions in three-dim…
We investigate the ExB diffusion of fusion born αparticles in tokamak plasmas. We determine the transport regimes for a realistic model that has the characteristics of the ion temperature gradient (ITG) or of the trapped electron modes (TEM) driven turbulence. It includes a spectrum of potential fluctuations that is modeled using the results of the numerical simulations, the drift of the potential with the effective diamagnetic velocity and the parallel motion. Our semi-analytical statistical approach is based on the decorrelation trajectory method (DTM), which is adapted to the gyrokinetic ap…
Strongly intermittent turbulence is observed in the shadow of a limiter in the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) at UCLA [W. Gekelman, H. Pfister, Z. Lucky, J. Bamber, D. Leneman, and J. Maggs, Rev. Sci. Inst. {\bfseries 62}, 2875 (1991)]. The amplitude probability distribution function (PDF) of the turbulence is strongly skewed, with density depletion events (or ``holes'') dominant in the high density region and density enhancement events (or ``blobs'') dominant in the low density region. Two-dimensional cross-conditional averaging shows that the blobs are detached, outward-propagating filamentary s…
Radially inward turbulent particle flux is observed in the core region of target plasma of Large Volume Plasma Device(LVPD). The region satisfy conditions for ETG turbulence, i.e. threshold condition, $ η_e = L_{n_e} / L_{T_e} > 2/3 $ , where density scale length, $ L_{n_e} \sim 300 cm $ and temerature scale length, $ L_{T_e} \sim 50cm $[S.K. Mattoo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 108, 255007(2012)\cite{Mattoo_PRL}]. The measured flux is dominantly electrostatic ($Γ_{es} \approx 10^{5} Γ_{em}$) although the nature of the measured turbulence is electromagnetic($β\approx 0.6 $). The turbulence has bee…
Transition phenomena between thermodynamic branch and turbulent branch in submarginal turbulent plasma are analyzed with statistical theory. Time-development of turbulent fluctuation is obtained by numerical simulations of Langevin equation which contains submarginal characteristics. Probability density functions and transition rates between two states are analyzed. Transition from turbulent branch to thermodynamic branch occurs in almost entire region between subcritical bifurcation point and linear stability boundary.
Continuous control over azimuthal flow and shear in the edge of the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) has been achieved using a biasable limiter which has allowed a careful study of the effect of flow shear on pressure-gradient-driven turbulence and transport in LAPD. LAPD rotates spontaneously in the ion diamagnetic direction (IDD); positive limiter bias first reduces, then minimizes (producing a near-zero shear state), and finally reverses the flow into the electron diamagnetic direction (EDD). Degradation of particle confinement is observed in the minimum shearing state and reduction in turbulent …
Test particle transport determined by the Lorentz force in turbulent magnetized plasmas is studied. The time dependent diffusion coefficient, valid for the whole range of parameters, is obtained by developing the decorrelation trajectory method. The effects of Larmor gyration in the presence of trapping are analyzed and several transport regimes are evidenced.
We construct a model for the turbulence near the X-point of a Tokamak device and, under suitable assumptions, we arrive to a closed equation for the electric field potential fluctuations. The analytical and numerical analysis is focused on a reduced two-dimensional formulation of the dynamics, which allows a direct mapping to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. The main merit of this study is to outline how the turbulence near the X-point, in correspondence to typical operation conditions of medium and large size Tokamaks, is dominated by the enstrophy cascade from large to smaller spat…

Scaling laws for the transport and heating of trace heavy ions in low-frequency, magnetized plasma turbulence are derived and compared with direct numerical simulations. The predicted dependences of turbulent fluxes and heating on ion charge and mass number are found to agree with numerical results for both stationary and differentially rotating plasmas. Heavy ion momentum transport is found to increase with mass, and heavy ions are found to be preferentially heated, implying a mass-dependent ion temperature for very weakly collisional plasmas and for partially-ionized heavy ions in strongly r…
The problem of determining the effective conductivity tensor of a magnetoactive turbulent plasma is considered in the approximation of isolated particles. Additional gyrotropicterms are shown to appear in the conductivity tensor in the presence of mean, nonzero magnetic helicity. The dispersion of propagating electro- magnetic waves changes, additional modes and additional rotation of the polarization plane appear, and the waves can be amplified. The properties acquired by plasma with helicity are similar those observed in chiral and bianisotropic electrodynamic media.
Differential rotation is induced in tokamak plasmas when an underlying symmetry of the governing gyrokinetic-Maxwell system of equations is broken. One such symmetry-breaking mechanism is considered here: the turbulent acceleration of particles along the mean magnetic field. This effect, often referred to as the `parallel nonlinearity', has been implemented in the $δf$ gyrokinetic code $\texttt{stella}$ and used to study the dependence of turbulent momentum transport on the plasma size and on the strength of the turbulence drive. For JET-like parameters with a wide range of driving temperature…
Subcritical transition of an inhomogeneous plasma where turbulences with different characteristic space-time scales coexist is analyzed with methods of statistical physics of turbulences. We derived the development equations of the probability density function (PDF) of the spectrum amplitudes of the fluctuating electro-static potential. By numerically solving the equations, the steady state PDFs were obtained. Although the subcritical transition is observed when the turbulent fluctuations are ignored, the PDF shows that the transition is smeared out by the turbulent fluctuations. It means that…
Observations of interstellar scintillations at radio wavelengths reveal a Kolmogorov-like scaling of the electron density spectrum with a spectral slope of -5/3 over six decades in wavenumber space. A similar turbulent density spectrum in the solar wind plasma has been reported. The energy transfer process in the magnetized solar wind plasma over such extended length-scales remains an unresolved paradox of modern turbulence theories raising the especially intriguing question of how a compressible magnetized solar wind exhibits a turbulent spectrum that is a characteristic of an incompressible …
Nonlinear phenomena and turbulence are central to our understanding and modeling the dynamics of fluids and plasmas, and yet they still resist analytical resolutions in many instances. However, progress has been made recently, displaying a richness of phenomena which was somewhat unexpected a few years back, such as the double constant-flux cascades of a same invariant to both the large and to the small scales, or the presence of non-Gaussian wings in the large-scale fields, for fluids and plasmas. Here, I will concentrate on the direct measurement of the magnitude of dissipation and an evalua…
Turbulent plasma flow, amplified by rapid 3D compression, can be suddenly dissipated under continuing compression. This effect relies on the sensitivity of the plasma viscosity to the temperature, $μ\sim T^{5/2}$. The plasma viscosity is also sensitive to the plasma ionization state. We show that the sudden dissipation phenomenon may be prevented when the plasma ionization state increases during compression, and demonstrate the regime of net viscosity dependence on compression where sudden dissipation is guaranteed. Additionally, it is shown that, compared to cases with no ionization, ionizati…
Observations show that plasma particles in the solar wind frequently display power-law velocity distributions, which can be isotropic or anisotropic. Particularly, the velocity distribution functions of solar wind electrons are frequently modeled as combination of a background Maxwellian distribution and a non-thermal distribution which is known as the "halo" distribution. For fast solar wind conditions, highly anisotropic field-aligned electrons, denominated as the "strahl" distribution, are also present. Motivated by these observations, the present paper considers a tenuous plasma with Maxwe…
The stochastic advection of low energy deuterium ions is studied in a three dimensional realistic turbulence model in conditions relevant for current tokamak fusion experiments. The diffusion coefficients are calculated starting from the test particles trajectories in the framework of the semi-analitical statistical model called the Decorrelation Trajectory Method. We show that trajectory trapping determined by the space correlation of the velocity field is the main cause for anomalous diffusion and we obtain the transport regimes corresponding to different values of the parameters of the turb…
A local turbulence model is developed to study energy cascades in the heliosheath and outer heliosphere (OH) based on self-consistent two-dimensional fluid simulations. The model describes a partially ionized magnetofluid OH that couples a neutral hydrogen fluid with a plasma primarily through charge-exchange interactions. Charge-exchange interactions are ubiquitous in warm heliospheric plasma, and the strength of the interaction depends largely on the relative speed between the plasma and the neutral fluid. Unlike small-length scale linear collisional dissipation in a single fluid, charge-exc…
The turbulent transport of minority species/impurities is investigated in 2D drift-wave turbulence as well as in 3D toroidal drift-Alfven edge turbulence. The full effects of perpendicular and -- in 3D -- parallel advection are kept for the impurity species. Anomalous pinch effects are recovered and explained in terms of Turbulent EquiPartition (TEP)
The prevailing paradigm for plasma turbulence associates a unique stationary state to given equilibrium parameters. We report the discovery of bistable turbulence in a strongly magnetised plasma. Two distinct states, obtained with identical equilibrium parameters in first-principle gyrokinetic simulations, have turbulent fluxes of particles, momentum and energy that differ by an order of magnitude, with the low-transport state agreeing with experimental observations. Occurrences of the two states are regulated by the competition between an externally imposed mean flow shear and "zonal" flows g…
With the advent of high power lasers, new opportunities have opened up for simulating astrophysical processes in the laboratory. We show that 2nd-order Fermi acceleration can be directly investigated at the National Ignition Facility, Livermore. This requires measuring the momentum-space diffusion of 3 MeV protons produced within a turbulent plasma generated by a laser. Treating Fermi acceleration as a biased diffusion process, we show analytically that a measurable broadening of the initial proton distribution is then expected for particles exiting the plasma.
We perform three dimensional (3D) ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to study the parametric decay instability of Alfven waves in turbulent plasmas and explore its possible applications in the solar wind. We find that, over a broad range of parameters in background turbulence amplitudes, the parametric decay instability of an Alfven wave with various amplitudes can still occur, though its growth rate in turbulent plasmas tends to be lower than both the theoretical linear theory prediction and that in the non-turbulent situations. Spatial - temporal FFT analyses of density fluctuations…
In previous work we provided the explicit form of the nonlinear PDEs, subjected to the appropriate boundary conditions, which have to be satisfied by transport coefficients for systems out of Onsager's region. Since the proposed PDEs are obtained without neglecting any term present in the balance equations (i.e., the mass, momentum, and energy balance equations), we propose them as a good candidate for describing also transport in thermodynamic systems in turbulent regimes. As a special case, we derive the nonlinear PDEs for transport coefficients when the thermodynamic system is subjected to …
