The radial flux of toroidal angular momentum is needed to determine tokamak intrinsic rotation profiles. Its computation requires knowledge of the gyrokinetic distribution functions and turbulent electrostatic potential to second-order in $ε= ρ/L$, where $ρ$ is the ion Larmor radius and $L$ is the variation length of the magnetic field. In this article, a complete set of equations to calculate the radial transport of toroidal angular momentum in any tokamak is presented. In particular, the $O(ε^2)$ equations for the turbulent components of the distribution functions and electrostatic potential are given for the first time without assuming that the poloidal magnetic field over the magnetic field strength is small.
Two symmetries of the local nonlinear delta-f gyrokinetic system of equations in tokamaks in the high flow regime are presented. The turbulent transport of toroidal angular momentum changes sign under an up-down reflection of the tokamak and a sign change of both the rotation and the rotation shear. Thus, the turbulent transport of toroidal angular momentum must vanish for up-down symmetric tokamaks in the absence of both rotation and rotation shear. This has important implications for the modeling of spontaneous rotation.
Toroidal rotation is well known to play significant roles in the edge transport and L-H transition dynamics of tokamaks. Our recent calculation finds that a sufficiently strong localized toroidal rotation can directly bring out the formation of edge pressure pedestal with reversed magnetic shear that is reminiscent of an H-mode plasma, purely through the effects of toroidal rotation on the tokamak MHD equilibrium itself. In particular, the enhanced edge toroidal rotation enables a substantial peaking of the parallel current profile near edge in higher $β$ regimes, which leads to the flattening…
The interaction of passing-ion drift orbits with spatially-inhomogeneous but purely diffusive radial transport is demonstrated to cause spontaneous toroidal spin-up to experimentally-relevant values in the tokamak edge. Physically, major-radial orbit shifts cause orbit-averaged diffusivities to depend on parallel velocity, including its sign, leading to residual stress. The resulting intrinsic rotation scales with ion temperature over poloidal magnetic field strength, resembling typical experimental scalings. Additionally, an inboard (outboard) X-point is expected to enhance co- (counter-) cur…
A simulated annealing (SA) relaxation method is used for calculation of high-beta reduced magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equilibria in toroidal geometry. The SA method, based on artificial dynamics derived from the MHD Hamiltonian structure, is used to calculate equilibria of large-aspect-ratio and circular-cross-section tokamaks as well as toroidally averaged stellarators. Tokamak equilibria including incompressible poloidal rotations are obtained and the Shafranov shift is seen to increase nearly quadratically in the rotation speed. A mapping procedure between non-rotating and poloidally rotatin…
The Grad-Shafranov equation is solved using spectral elements for tokamak equilibrium with toroidal rotation. The Grad-Shafranov solver builds upon and extends the NIMEQ code [Howell and Sovinec, Comput. Phys. Commun. 185 (2014) 1415] previously developed for static tokamak equilibria. Both geometric and algebraic convergence are achieved as the polynomial degree of the spectral-element basis increases. A new analytical solution to the Grad-Shafranov equation is obtained for Solov'ev equilibrium in presence of rigid toroidal rotation, in addition to a previously obtained analytical solution fo…
By choosing appropriate deformed Maxwellian ion and electron distribution functions depending on the two particle constants of motion, i.e. the energy and toroidal angular momentum, we reduce the Vlasov axisymmetric equilibrium problem for quasineutral plasmas to a transcendental Grad-Shafranov-like equation. This equation is then solved numerically under the Dirichlet boundary condition for an analytically prescribed boundary possessing a lower X-point to construct tokamak equilibria with toroidal sheared ion flow and anisotropic pressure. Depending on the deformation of the distribution func…
The characteristic profile and magnitude are predicted in theory for the neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) torque induced by plasma response to the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) in a tokamak with an edge pedestal. For a low-$β$ equilibrium, the NTV torque is dominated by the toroidal component with the same dominant toroidal mode number of RMP. The NTV torque profile is found to be localized, whose peak location is determined by profiles of both the equilibrium temperature (pressure) and the plasma response. In general, the peak of NTV torque profile is found to track the pedestal p…
Toroidal torque generated by neoclassical viscosity caused by external non-resonant, non-axisymmetric perturbations has a significant influence on toroidal plasma rotation in tokamaks. In this article, a derivation for the expressions of toroidal torque and radial transport in resonant regimes is provided within quasilinear theory in canonical action-angle variables. The proposed approach treats all low-collisional quasilinear resonant NTV regimes including superbanana plateau and drift-orbit resonances in a unified way and allows for magnetic drift in all regimes. It is valid for perturbation…
We analyze an axisymmetric equilibrium of a plasma endowed with toroidal and poloidal velocity fields, with the aim to characterize the influence of the global motion on the morphology of the magnetic confinement. We construct our configuration assuming that the poloidal velocity field is aligned with the poloidal magnetic field lines and, furthermore, we require that the plasma mass density depend on the magnetic flux function (or equivalently, that the plasma fluid be incompressible). We then derive a sort of Grad-Shafranov equation for such an equilibrium and implement it to tokamak relevan…
Rotation of tokamak-plasmas, not at the mechanical equilibrium, is investigated utilizing a theorem of thermodynamics, established by Prigogine. This theorem, suitably applied to toroidally confined plasmas, suggests that the global barycentric rotations of the plasma, in the toroidal and poloidal directions, are pure reversible processes. In case of negligible viscosity and by supposing the validity of the balance equation for the internal forces, we show that the plasma, even not in the mechanical equilibrium, may freely rotate as a rigid body in the toroidal direction with an angular freque…
In the presence of energetic particles (EPs), the Long-Lived Mode (LLM) frequency multiplication with n = 1,2,3 or higher is often observed on HL-2A, where n is the toroidal mode number. Hybrid kinetic-MHD model simulations of the energetic particle (EP) driven kink/fishbone modes on a static HL-2A-like tokamak using NIMROD code find that, when the background plasma pressure is relatively high, and the EP pressure and the beam energy are relatively low, the mode frequency increases almost linearly with EP pressure, and the frequency is proportional to n ("frequency multiplication"), even in ab…
The injection of lower hybrid waves for current drive into a tokamak affects the profile of intrinsic rotation. In this article, the momentum deposition by the lower hybrid wave on the electrons is studied. Due to the increase in the poloidal momentum of the wave as it propagates into the tokamak, the parallel momentum of the wave increases considerably. The change of the perpendicular momentum of the wave is such that the toroidal angular momentum of the wave is conserved. If the perpendicular momentum transfer via electron Landau damping is ignored, the transfer of the toroidal angular momen…
A new mechanism for toroidal momentum transport in a tokamak is investigated using the gyro-kinetic model. First, an analytic model is developed through the use of the ballooning transform. The terms that generate the momentum transport are then connected with the poloidal derivative of the ballooning envelope, which are one order smaller in the normalised Larmor radius, compared with the derivative of the eikonal. The mechanism, therefore, does not introduce an inhomogeneity in the radial direction, in contrast with the effect of profile shearing. Numerical simulations of the linear ion tempe…
The shear Alfvén continuum spectrum is studied for a tokamak with a single island chain using the ideal Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) theory. We have taken into account the toroidal geometry and toroidal mode coupling with the island considered as a highly-shaped stellarator. Various new frequency gaps open up inside the island due to its asymmetry both poloidally and toroidally, such as the Mirror-induced Alfvén Eigenmode (MAE) gap and the Helicity-induced Alfvén Eigenmode (HAE) gap. We have shown that the MAE gap acts as the continuation of the outside Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmode (TAE) gap into t…
With the establishment of vanishing net electrostatic fields in a toroidally symmetric tokamak at equilibrium [R. W. Johnson, to appear in Phys. Rev. D], one is left needing an explanation for the measurement of an apparent radial electric field in experiments. Two scenarios are proposed, depending on the type of measurement being considered. Indirect measurement via the radial equation of motion for an impurity species possibly measures that species' net radial viscous force, and direct measurement via the motional Stark effect might reveal electric fields generated by the shifting of the tor…
Alfvén cyclotron instabilities excited by velocity gradients of energetic beam ions were investigated in MAST experiments with super-Alfvénic NBI over a wide range of toroidal magnetic fields from ~0.34 T to ~0.585 T. In MAST discharges with high magnetic field, a discrete spectrum of modes in the sub-cyclotron frequency range is excited toroidally propagating counter to the beam and plasma current (toroidal mode numbers n < 0).
Vlasov equilibria of axisymmetric plasmas with vacuum toroidal magnetic field can be reduced, up to a selection of ions and electrons distributions functions, to a Grad-Shafranov-like equation. Quasineutrality narrow the choice of the distributions functions. In contrast to two-dimensional translationally symmetric equilibria whose electron distribution function consists of a displaced Maxwellian, the toroidal equilibria need deformed Maxwellians. In order to be able to carry through the calculations, this deformation is produced by means of either a Heaviside step function or an exponential f…
We show that zonal flow can be preferentially excited by intermediate-scale toroidal electron temperature gradient (ETG) turbulence in tokamak plasmas. Previous theoretical studies that yielded an opposite conclusion assumed a fluid approximation for ETG modes. Here, we carry out a gyrokinetic analysis which ultimately yields a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the ETG dynamics with a Navier-Stokes type nonlinearity. For typical tokamak parameters, it is found that zonal flow generation plays an important role in the intermediate-scale ETG turbulence. This finding offers an explanation for re…
The time varying currents in the Ohmic transformer in the SST-1 tokamak induce voltages that drive large eddy currents in the passive structures like the vacuum vessel and cryostat. Since the vacuum vessel and the cryostat are toroidally continuous without electrical breaks in SST- 1, this leads to a shielding effect on the flux penetrating the vacuum vessel. This reduces the magnitude of the loop voltage seen by the plasma as also delays its buildup. Also the induced currents alter the null location of magnetic field. This will have serious implications on the plasma breakdown and startup and…
Recent work demonstrated that breaking the up-down symmetry of tokamak flux surfaces removes a constraint that limits intrinsic momentum transport, and hence toroidal rotation, to be small. We show, through MHD analysis, that ellipticity is most effective at introducing up-down asymmetry throughout the plasma. We detail an extension to GS2, a local $δf$ gyrokinetic code that self-consistently calculates momentum transport, to permit up-down asymmetric configurations. Tokamaks with tilted elliptical poloidal cross-sections were simulated to determine nonlinear momentum transport. The results, w…
Using analytic calculations, the effects of the edge flux surface shape and the toroidal current profile on the penetration of flux surface shaping are investigated in a tokamak. It is shown that the penetration of shaping is determined by the poloidal variation of the poloidal magnetic field on the surface. This fact is used to investigate how different flux surface shapes penetrate from the edge. Then, a technique to separate the effects of magnetic pressure and tension in the Grad-Shafranov equation is presented and used to calculate radial profiles of strong elongation for nearly constant …
AA spontaneous toroidal rotation due to the electron-ion asymmetric anomalous viscous damping and the turbulent radial particle flux has been found, which explains the experimental observation of the anomalous toroidal momentum source in the edge of a tokamak plasma.
A "carpet" of torsional Alfven waves, resonantly excited in an annulus inside a toroidal conducting vessel, could maintain magnetized plasma inside of the annulus against the inherent outward expansion. Such toroidal magnetic confinement for fusion could present some advantages over conventional tokamaks. The idea could also be used to stabilize interchange and ballooning modes in tokamaks and other interchange-limited fusion devices.
The ion toroidal rotation in a tokamak consists of an $E\times B$ flow due to the radial electric field and a diamagnetic flow due to the radial pressure gradient. The turbulent pinch of toroidal angular momentum due to the Coriolis force studied in previous work is only applicable to the $E\times B$ flow. In this Letter, the momentum pinch for the rotation generated by the radial pressure gradient is calculated and is compared with the Coriolis pinch. This distinction is important for subsonic flows or the flow in the pedestal where the two types of flows are similar in size and opposite in d…
A relation between physical consequences of the so-called Ehrenfest's Paradox and the radial electric field in the classical quasi-neutral tokamak plasma is shown. Basic author's approach to the relativistic nature of the tokamak has been described in [1]. The experiment which can resolve the Ehrenfest's Paradox is presented.

The structure of poloidal and toroidal flows of trace impurities in the edge pedestal of tokamak plasmas is studied analytically and numerically. Parallel momentum balance is analysed upon retaining the following terms: poloidal and toroidal centrifugal forces (inertia), pressure force, electric force, and the friction force. It is shown that, when the poloidal flow is such to produce a properly defined Mach number of order unity somewhere on the flux surface, shock fronts can form. The shock fronts can modify the predicted asymmetry structures in both the flow and the density profile along th…
First-principles numerical simulations are used to describe a transport bifurcation in a differentially rotating tokamak plasma. Such a bifurcation is more probable in a region of zero magnetic shear than one of finite magnetic shear because in the former case the component of the sheared toroidal flow that is perpendicular to the magnetic field has the strongest suppressing effect on the turbulence. In the zero-magnetic-shear regime, there are no growing linear eigenmodes at any finite value of flow shear. However, subcritical turbulence can be sustained, owing to the transient growth of mode…
We present simulated figures of the diverted magnetic field lines of the tokamak ITER, obtained by numerically integrating a Hamiltonian model with electrical currents in five wire loops and control coils. We show evidences of a sticky island embedded in the chaotic region near the divertor plates, which traps magnetic field lines for many toroidal turns increasing their connection lengths to these plates.
The paper presents a relativistic mechanism that can create a poloidal non-uniformity of a radial electric field on a magnetic surface in a tokamak plasma. This mechanism is associated with a significant current velocity of electrons in plasma for many experimental modes of tokamak operations. It is important that electric fields arise without the traditional separation of charges in plasma. The presented mechanism can explain the previously experimentally measured poloidal non-uniformity of the C+6 carbon ion toroidal rotation velocity in the TORE-SUPRA tokamak plasma
A new force balance model for the EFIT magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium technique for tokamaks is presented which includes the full toroidal flow and anisotropy changes to the Grad-Shafranov equation. The free functions are poloidal flux functions and all non-linear contributions to the toroidal current density are treated iteratively. The parallel heat flow approximation chosen for the model is that parallel temperature is a flux function and that both parallel and perpendicular pressures may be described using parallel and perpendicular temperatures. This choice for the fluid thermodynamics h…
I present the results of the analytic plane strain optimization of the structure and conductor grading in the inner leg of a Tokamak toroidal field coil. The coil is assumed to be made of regions of soft conductor inside a stiff grid of conduit. Calculus of variations is used to determine the optimal profile of this structure. The optimal solution is found to be two-layered. An outer layer is bucked only, not wedged, and the structure fraction is graded so that all structure is at a uniform stress. An inner layer is an advanced bucking cylinder, similar to a Florida Bitter plate, whose radial …
We present the field-line modeling, design and construction of a prototype circular-coil tokamak-torsatron hybrid called Proto-CIRCUS. The device has a major radius R = 16 cm and minor radius a < 5 cm. The six "toroidal field" coils are planar as in a tokamak, but they are tilted. This, combined with induced or driven plasma current, is expected to generate rotational transform, as seen in field-line tracing and equilibrium calculations. The device is expected to operate at lower plasma current than a tokamak of comparable size and magnetic field, which might have interesting implications for …
The transition from toroidal counter- to co- rotation in the core plasma has been observed at L to H transition in several tokamaks. Spontaneous reversal has also been observed in TCV beyond a threshold in the density. We develop a model based on the following phenomenology: (1) the increase of the gradient of the pressure triggers formation on a fast time scale of cells of convection (similar to Rayleigh-Benard (RB), but with a single sign of vorticity); (2) poloidal rotation is induced by the envelope of the peripheric velocity of the convection cells; via the baroclinic term the gradients o…
The connection between the poloidal and the toroidal rotation of plasma in tokamak is important for the high confinement regimes, in particular in reactor regime. The sudden onset of closed convection structures in the poloidal section, due to the baroclinic production of vorticity, will sustain a fast increase of the poloidal velocity and a substantial effect on the toroidal rotation. However this is limited to the short time of the onset transition. In real plasma however there is random generation and suppression of convection cells and the sequence of these transient events can prove able …
Kinetic ballooning modes (KBM) are widely believed to play a critical role in disruptive dynamics as well as turbulent transport in tokamaks. While the nonlinear evolution of ballooning modes has been proposed as a mechanism for detonation in tokamak plasmas, the role of kinetic effects in such nonlinear dynamics remains largely unexplored. In this work global gyrokinetic simulation results of KBM nonlinear behavior are presented. Instead of the finite-time singularity predicted by ideal MHD theory, the kinetic instability is shown to develop into an intermediate nonlinear regime of exponentia…
The aim of the present work is to investigate tokamak equilibria with reversed magnetic shear and sheared flow, which may play a role in the formation of internal transport barriers (ITBs), within the framework of two-fluid model. The study is based on exact self-consistent solutions in cylindrical geometry by means of which the impact of the magnetic shear, s, and the "toroidal" (axial) and "poloidal" (azimuthal) ion velocity components on the radial electric field, its shear and the shear of the ExB velocity is examined. For a wide parametric regime of experimental concern it turns out that …
The Hall effect, defined as the separation of electric charges of opposite sign when they move in a magnetic field, is suggested to contribute substantially to the observed negative radial electric field Er in the core plasma in tokamaks and, respectively, to the spontaneous/intrinsic rotation of plasma. A simple way to evaluate the Hall effect contribution to the Er value, using the independently measured space distributions of magnetic field and plasma rotation velocity, is suggested. The estimates of the effect for experimental data from the TM-4 and T-10 tokamaks suggest that the above phe…
A previous proof of non existence of tokamak equilibria with purely poloidal flow within macroscopic theory [Throumoulopoulos, Weitzner, Tasso, Physics of Plasmas Vol. 13, 122501 (2006)] motivated this microscopic analysis near magnetic axis for toroidal and "straight" tokamak plasmas. Despite the new exact solutions of Vlasov's equation found here, the structure of macroscopic flows remains elusive.
Axisymmetric free-boundary equilibrium reconstructions of tokamak plasmas in the Lithium Tokamak eXperiment (LTX) are performed using the PSI-Tri equilibrium code. Reconstructions in LTX are complicated by the presence of long-lived non-axisymmetric eddy currents generated by vacuum vessel and first wall structures. To account for this effect, reconstructions are performed with additional toroidal current sources in these conducting regions. The source distributions are fixed poloidally, but their scale is adjusted as part of the full reconstruction. Eddy distributions are computed by toroidal…
Stronger impurity density in-out poloidal asymmetries than predicted by the most comprehensive neoclassical models have been measured in several tokamaks around the world during the last decade, calling into question the reduction of turbulence by sheared radial electric fields in H-mode tokamak pedestals. However, these pioneering theories neglect the impurity diamagnetic drift, or fail to retain it self-consistently; while recent measurements indicate that it can be of the same order as the ExB drift. We have developed the first self-consistent theoretical model retaining the impurity diamag…
Gyrokinetic field theory is addressed in the context of a general Hamiltonian. The background magnetic geometry is static and axisymmetric, and all dependence of the Lagrangian upon dynamical variables is in the Hamiltonian or in free field terms. Equations for the fields are given by functional derivatives. The symmetry through the Hamiltonian with time and toroidal angle invariance of the geometry lead to energy and toroidal momentum conservation. In various levels of ordering against fluctuation amplitude, energetic consistency is exact. The role of this in underpinning of conservation laws…
Breaking the up-down symmetry of tokamaks removes a constraint limiting intrinsic momentum transport, and hence toroidal rotation, to be small. Using gyrokinetic theory, we study the effect of different up-down asymmetric flux surface shapes on the turbulent transport of momentum. This is done by perturbatively expanding the gyrokinetic equation in large flux surface shaping mode number. It is found that the momentum flux generated by shaping that lacks mirror symmetry (which is necessarily up-down asymmetric) has a power law scaling with the shaping mode number. However, the momentum flux gen…
