We demonstrate that nonlinear directional coupler with special bending of waveguide axes can be used for all-optical switching of polychromatic light with very broad spectrum covering all visible region. The bandwidth of suggested device is enhanced five times compared to conventional couplers. Our results suggest novel opportunities for creation of all-optical logical gates and switches for polychromatic light with white-light and super-continuum spectrum.
Linear and nonlinear directional couplers are currently used in fiber optics communications. They may also play a role in multiphoton approaches to quantum information processing if accurate control is obtained over the phases and polarizations of the signals at the output of the coupler. With this motivation, the constants of motion of the coupler equation are used to obtain an explicit analytical solution for the nonlinear coupler.
Despite the benefits that directional coupler based parity-time symmetric systems may offer to the field of integrated optics, the realization of such couplers relies on rather strict design constraints on the waveguide parameters. Here, we demonstrate a new type of 3-dB coupler that has an ultra-broadband operational range starting from 1300 nm to 1600 nm with low fabrication sensitivity. Overall device size is 800 micron including in/out S-bend waveguides. The coupler is an asymmetric non-uniform directional coupler that consists of two tapered waveguides. In the context of guided optics, we derive, analytically and geometrically, a rigorous general criterion to design wavelength insensitive interferometers with mirror symmetry, which are needed for wavelength multiplexing/demultiplexing. The criterion is applied to a practical case, resulting in an interferometer that works on a band wider than 70 nm.

A new approach to design wavelength insensitive optical power splitter is presented. First coupled-mode theory is cast in operatorial form. This allows to solve the equivalent of coupled differential equations as simple limits. The operators are then represented on a generalized Poincare sphere, and the resulting graphical tool is applied to different structures, giving a clear interpretation of previous results in literature as well as hints on how to find improved solutions.

We report the ultrafast laser fabrication and mid-IR characterization (3.39 microns) of four-port evanescent field directional couplers. The couplers were fabricated in a commercial gallium lanthanum sulphide glass substrate using sub-picosecond laser pulses of 1030 nm light. Straight waveguides inscribed using optimal fabrication parameters were found to exhibit propagation losses of 0.8 dB/cm. A series of couplers were inscribed with different interaction lengths, and we demonstrate power splitting ratios of between 8% and 99% for mid-IR light with a wavelength of 3.39 microns. In this paper, we propose a method for the generation of higher dimensional modal entanglement through type II spontaneous parametric down conversion process using a three waveguide directional coupler in a periodically poled lithium niobate substrate. We show that by a proper design, it is possible to achieve an output state of two photons occupying three different spatial modes. We produce transmission and reflection spectra of the anti-directional coupler (ADC) composed of linearly-coupled positive- and negative-refractive-index arms, with intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity. We demonstrate a spectrally broadband and effcient technique for collecting photoluminescence from a single InAs quantum dot directly into a standard single mode optical fiber. The concept of quasi-PT symmetry in optical wave guiding system is elaborated by comparing the evolution dynamics of a PT-symmetric directional coupler and a passive directional coupler. In particular we show that in the low loss regime, apart for an overall exponentially damping factor that can be compensated via a dynamical renormalization of the power flow in the system along the propagation direction, the dynamics of the passive coupler fully reproduce the one of the PT-symmetric system.

We present a rotated polarization directional coupler (RPDC) on a photonic chip. We demonstrate a double-track approach to modify the distribution of refractive index between adjacent tracks and form a single waveguide with arbitrary birefringent optical axis. We construct a RPDC with the two axis-rotated waveguides coupled in a strong regime. The obtained extinction ratios on average are about 16dB and 20dB for the corresponding orthogonal polarizations. We propose and demonstrate a passively biased 2 by 2 thermo-optic switch with high power efficiency and fast response time. The device benefits from the highly concentrated optical field of a slot waveguide mode and the strong thermo-optic effect of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cladding. The NLC fills the nano-slot region and is aligned by the subwavelength grating inside. We report on studies of simultaneous continuous-wave mirrorless lasing on multiple optical transitions, realized by pumping hot cesium vapor with laser light resonant with the 6$S_{1/2}\rightarrow 8$P$_{3/2}$ transition. The multiplicity of decay paths for the excited atoms to their ground state is responsible for the emergence of lasing in a number of transitions, observed here in at least seven wavelengths in the infrared (IR), and at two wavelengths in the blue. We study the properties of the fields generated in the cesium vapor, such as optical power, directionality and optical linewidth.

The Zeno effect is investigated for soliton type pulses in a nonlinear directional coupler with dissipation. The effect consists in increase of the coupler transparency with increase of the dissipative losses in one of the arms. It is shown that localized dissipation can lead to switching of solitons between the arms. Power losses accompanying the switching can be fully compensated by using a combination of dissipative and active (in particular, parity-time -symmetric) segments.
In this paper, we present the design and experimental demonstration of a high dynamic range electric field sensor based on electro-optic (EO) polymer directional coupler waveguides that offers the strong and ultra-fast EO response of EO polymer. As compared to conventional photonic electric field sensors, our directional coupler waveguide design offers several advantages such as bias-free operation, highly linear measurement response up to 70dB, and a wide electric field detection range from 16.7V/m to 750kV/m at a frequency of 1GHz.
