High harmonic generation due to the interaction of a short ultra relativistic laser pulse with overdense plasma is studied analytically and numerically. On the basis of the ultra relativistic similarity theory we show that the high harmonic spectrum is universal, i.e. it does not depend on the interaction details. The spectrum includes the power law part $I_n\propto n^{-8/3}$ for $n<\sqrt{8α}γ_{\max}^3$, followed by exponential decay. Here $γ_{\max}$ is the largest relativistic $γ$-factor of the plasma surface and $α$ is the second derivative of the surface velocity at this moment. The high harmonic cutoff at $\propto γ_{\max}^3$ is parametrically larger than the $4 γ_{\max}^2$ predicted by the ``oscillating mirror'' model based on the Doppler effect. The cornerstone of our theory is the new physical phenomenon: spikes in the relativistic $γ$-factor of the plasma surface. These spikes define the high harmonic spectrum and lead to attosecond pulses in the reflected radiation.
One-dimensional steady-state plasma-field structures in overdense plasma are studied assuming that the electron temperature is uniform over plasma bulk and the ions are stationary. It is shown that there may exist solutions for electron distributions with cavitation regions in plasma under the action of ponderomotive force
The acceleration of ions in the interaction of high intensity laser pulses with overdense plasmas is investigated with particle-in-cell simulations. For circular polarization of the laser pulses, high-density ion bunches moving into the plasma are generated at the laser-plasma interaction surface. A simple analytical model accounts for the numerical observations and provides scaling laws for the ion bunch energy and generation time as a function of pulse intensity and plasma density.
Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results of sustained acceleration of electron-positron (e+e-) plasmas by comoving electromagnetic (EM) pulses are presented. When a thin slab of overdense e+e- plasma is irradiated with linear-polarized ultra-intense short laser pulses from both sides, the pulses are transmitted when the plasma is compressed to thinner than ~ 2 relativistic skin depths. A fraction of the plasma is then captured and efficiently accelerated by self-induced JxB forces. For 1 micron laser and 1021Wcm-2 intensity, the maximum energy exceeds GeV in a picosecond.
According to the standard scenario of plasma emission, escaping radiations are generated by the nonlinear development of the kinetic bump-on-tail instability driven by a single beam of energetic electrons interacting with plasmas. Here we conduct fully-kinetic electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations to investigate plasma emission induced by the ring-distributed energetic electrons interacting with overdense plasmas. Efficient excitations of the fundamental (F) and harmonic (H) emissions are revealed with radiation mechanism(s) different from the standard scenario: (1) The primary modes ac…
For production of low temperature plasmas with low collisionality, 2.45GHz microwave power up to 20kW is injected perpendicularly to the toroidal field at very low toroidal field Bt
A new phenomenon of enhancing the relativistic transparency of overdense plasmas by the influence of hot-electron refluxing has been found via particle-in-cell simulations. When a p-polarized laser pulse, with intensity below the self-induced-transparency (SIT) threshold, obliquely irradiates a thin overdense plasma, the initially opaque plasma would become transparent after a time interval which linearly relies on the thickness of the plasma. This phenomenon can be interpreted by the influence of hot-electron refluxing. As the laser intensity is higher than the SIT threshold, the penetration …
It is shown that penetration of relativistically intense laser light into an overdense plasma, accessible by self-induced transparency, occurs over a finite length only. The penetration length depends crucially on the overdense plasma parameter and increases with increasing incident intensity after exceeding the threshold for self-induced transparency. Exact analytical solutions describing the plasma-field distributions are presented.
We present a new mechanism of attosecond extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulses generation from a relativistic laser-driven overdense plasma surfaces in the wavebreaking regime. Through particle-in-cell simulations and analysis, we demonstrate that the observed ultrashort XUV emission for the parameters we considered is predominantly due to a strong plasma-density oscillation subsequent to wavebreaking. The coupling of the strong density variation and the transverse fields in the front surface layer gives rise to the transmitted emission with frequencies mainly around the local plasma frequency. Thi…
We show both theoretically and experimentally that an electromagnetic wave can be totally absorbed by an overdense plasma when a subwavelength diffraction grating is placed in front of the plasma surface. The absorption is due to dissipation of surface plasma waves (plasmons-polaritons) that have been resonantly excited by the evanescent component of the diffracted electromagnetic wave. The developed theoretical model allows one to determine the conditions for the total absorption.
We have shown both experimentally and theoretically that polarization-independent broad-band absorption of electromagnetic waves by an overdense plasma, caused by surface plasmon-polaritons (SPP) excitation, can be achieved due to combination of two factors: a non-zero angle of incidence and a two-dimensional circular diffraction grating placed at a properly chosen distance in front of the plasma boundary. Direct detection of SPP has been achieved for the first time using a miniature antenna imbedded in the plasma.
A novel explanation of the relativistic self-induced transparency effect during superintense laser interaction with an overdense plasma is proposed. We studied it analytically and verified with direct modeling by both PIC and kinetic equation simulations. Based on this treatment, a method of ultrashort high-energy electron bunch generation with durations on a few femtosecond time scale is also proposed and studied via numerical simulation
The mechanism of harmonic generation in both O and X-mode configurations for a magnetized plasma has been explored here in detail with the help of Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. A detailed characterization of both the reflected and transmitted electromagnetic radiation propagating in the bulk of the plasma has been carried out for this purpose. The efficiency of harmonic generation is shown to increase with the incident laser intensity. Dependency of harmonic efficiency has also been found on magnetic field strength. This work demonstrates that there is an optimum value of the magnetic fi…
Using 1D and 2D PIC simulations, we describe and model the backward ejection of electron bunches when a laser pulse reflects off an overdense plasma with a sharp density gradient on its front side. The dependence on the laser intensity and gradient scale length is studied. It is found that during each laser period the incident laser pulse generates a large charge-separation field, or plasma capacitor, which accelerates an attosecond bunch of electrons towards vacuum. This process is maximized for short gradient scale lengths and collapses when the gradient scale length is comparable to the las…
Observations of the interaction of an intense λ0 \approx 10 μm laser pulse with near-critical overdense plasmas (ne = 1.8 - 3 nc) are presented. For the first time, transverse optical probing is used to show a recession of the front surface caused by radiation pressure driven hole-boring by the laser pulse with an initial velocity > 10^6 ms-1, and the resulting collisionless shocks. The collisionless shock propagates through the plasma, dissipates into an ion-acoustic solitary wave, and eventually becomes collisional as it slows further. These conclusions are supported by PIC simulations which…
The excitation of electrostatic waves in plasma by laser electromagnetic pulse is important as it provides a scheme by which the power from the laser electromagnetic (EM) field can be transferred into the plasma medium. The paper presents a fundamentally new ponderomotive pressure-driven mechanism of excitation of electrostatic waves in an overdense magnetized plasma by a finite laser pulse. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations using the EPOCH-4.17.10 framework have been utilized for the study of a finite laser pulse interacting with a magnetized overdense plasma medium. The external magnetic fi…
The generation of electron surface oscillations in overdense plasmas irradiated at normal incidence by an intense laser pulse is investigated. Two-dimensional (2D) particle-in-cell simulations show a transition from a planar, electrostatic oscillation at $2ω$, with $ω$ the laser frequency, to a 2D electromagnetic oscillation at frequency $ω$ and wavevector $k>ω/c$. A new electron parametric instability, involving the decay of a 1D electrostatic oscillation into two surface waves, is introduced to explain the basic features of the 2D oscillations. This effect leads to the rippling of the plasma…
We review recent PIC simulation results which show that double-sided irradiation of a thin over- dense plasma slab by ultra-intense laser pulses from both sides can lead to sustained comoving acceleration of surface electrons to energies much higher than the conventional ponderomotive limit. The acceleration stops only when the electrons drift transversely out of the laser beam. We show latest 2.5D results of parameter studies based on finite laser spot size and discuss future laser experiments that can be used to test these results.
Propagation of short and ultra-intense laser pulses in a semi-infinite space of overdense hydrogen plasma is analyzed via fully-relativistic, real geometry particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations including radiation friction. The relativistic transparency and hole-boring regimes are found to be sensitive to the transverse plasma field, backward light reflection, and laser pulse filamentation. For laser intensities approaching $I\sim10^{24}$ W/cm$^2$ the direct laser acceleration of protons, along with ion Coulomb explosion, results in their injection into the acceleration phase of the compressed el…
One dimensional Particle-in-cell simulations using OSIRIS-4.0 has been conducted to study the interaction of a laser electromagnetic pulse with an overdense magnetized plasma target. The external magnetic field has been chosen to be directed along the laser propagation direction. This geometry supports the propagation of right (R) and left (L) circularly polarised electromagnetic waves in the plasma. The laser pulse is allowed to propagate inside the plasma when its frequency falls in the pass band of the dispersion curves of L and/or R waves. The strength of the applied external magnetic fiel…
Overdense plasmas have been attained with 2.45 GHz microwave heating in the low-field, low-aspect-ratio CNT stellarator. Densities higher than four times the ordinary (O) mode cutoff density were measured with 8 kW of power injected in the O-mode and, alternatively, with 6.5 kW in the extraordinary (X) mode. The temperature profiles peak at the plasma edge. This was ascribed to collisional damping of the X-mode at the upper hybrid resonant layer. The X-mode reaches that location by tunneling, mode-conversions or after polarization-scrambling reflections off the wall and in-vessel coils, regard…
The effect of ion mass on pair production in the interaction of an ultraintense laser with overdense plasmas has been explored by particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. It is found that the heavier ion mass excites the higher and broader electrostatic field, which is responsible for the enhancement of backward photon number. The pair yields are also reinforced due to the increase of head-on collision of backwards photon with incoming laser. By examining the density evolution and angle distribution of each particle species the origin of pair yields enhancement has been clarified further.
We measure the emission of energetic electrons from the interaction between ultrashort laser pulses and a solid density plasma in the relativistic regime. We detect an electron beam that only appears with few-cycle pulses (< 10 fs) and large plasma scale lengths ($L > λ_0$). Numerical simulations, in agreement with the experiments, reveal that these electrons are accelerated by a laser wakefield. Plasma waves are indeed resonantly excited by the few-cycle laser pulses in the near-critical-density region of the plasma. Electrons are then injected by ionization into the plasma waves and accelera…
When a laser field is incident on an overdense plasma it is unable to penetrate inside it. Nevertheless, a part of its energy gets transferred to the electrons through a variety of mechanisms (e.g. vacuum and $\vec{J}\times \vec{B}) heating [1, 2]). The dynamics of these energetic electrons inside the plasma is a field of great interest. It is demonstrated here using 2-D PIC (Particle-In-Cell) simulation that when a high intensity laser pulse is incident on an overdense target, energetic electrons get generated which spontaneously organize themselves to form coherent structures. These coherent…
The interaction of high-intensity laser pulses and solid targets provides a promising way to create compact, tunable and bright XUV attosecond sources that can become a unique tool for a variety of applications. However, it is important to control the polarization state of this XUV radiation, and to do so in the most efficient regime of generation. Using the relativistic electronic spring (RES) model and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, we show that the polarization state of the generated attosecond pulses can be tuned in a wide range of parameters by adjusting the polarization and angle of…
The excitation of wake waves by a relativistic homogeneous electron bunch passing through cold magnetized plasma at equilibrium is studied for arbitrary values of the ratio of bunch density to plasma density. The analysis is based on the assumption that the magnetic field is sufficiently strong ($ω_B\gg ω_p$, where $ω_p$ and $ω_B$ are the electron plasma and cyclotron frequences respectively). The periodic and nonperiodic solutions for the momentum of plasma electrons inside and outside the bunch are analyzed. It was shown that the presence of strong external magnetic field may increase the am…
A method to generate an intense isolated few-cycle attosecond XUV pulse is demonstrated using particle-in-cell simulations. When a tailored laser pulse with a sharp edge irradiates a foil target, a strong transverse net current can be excited, which emits a few-cycle XUV pulse from the target rear side. The isolated pulse is ultrashort in the time domain with a duration of several hundred attoseconds. It also has a narrow bandwidth in the spectral domain compared to other XUV sources of high-order harmonics. It has most energy confined around the plasma frequency and no low-harmonic orders bel…
The interaction of dense plasmas with an intense laser under a strong external magnetic field has been investigated. When the cyclotron frequency for the ambient magnetic field is higher than the laser frequency, the laser's electromagnetic field is converted to the whistler mode that propagates along the field line. Because of the nature of the whistler wave, the laser light penetrates into dense plasmas with no cutoff density, and produces superthermal electrons through cyclotron resonance. It is found that the cyclotron resonance absorption occurs effectively under the broadened conditions,…
Thermal fusion plasmas initiated by standing whistler waves are investigated numerically by two- and one-dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations. When a standing whistler wave collapses due to the wave breaking of ion plasma waves, the energy of the electromagnetic waves transfers directly to the ion kinetic energy. Here we find that the ion heating by the standing whistler wave is operational even in multi-dimensional simulations of multi-ion species targets, such as deuterium-tritium (DT) ices and solid ammonia borane (H$_6$BN). The energy conversion efficiency to ions becomes as high as 15…
Two decades after the invention of chirped pulse amplification the physical mechanism of collisionless absorption of intense laser radiation in overdense matter is still not sufficiently well understood. We show that anharmonic resonance in the self-generated plasma potential of the single plasma layers (cold plasma model) or of the individual electrons (warm plasma), respectively, constitutes the leading physical mechanism of collisionless absorption in an overdense plasma. Analogously to collisions, resonance provides for the finite phase shift of the free electron current relative to the dr…
The existence of standing high frequency electromagnetic (EM) solitons in a fully degenerate overdense electron plasma is studied applying relativistic hydrodynamics and Maxwell equations. The stable soliton solutions are found in both relativistic and nonrelativistic degenerate plasmas.
We report on the first absorption experiments of sub-10 fs high-contrast Ti:Sa laser pulses incident on solid targets. The very good contrast of the laser pulse assures the formation of a very small pre-plasma and the pulse interacts with the matter close to solid density. Experimental results indicate that p-polarized laser pulses are absorbed up to 80 percent at 80 degrees incidence angle. The simulation results of PSC PIC code clearly confirm the observations and show that the collisionless absorption works efficiently in steep density profiles.
Hot electron temperatures and electron energy spectra in the course of interaction between intense laser pulse and overdense plasmas are reexamined from a viewpoint of the difference in laser wavelength. The hot electron temperature measured by a particle-in-cell simulation is scaled by $I$ rather than $I λ^2$ at the interaction with overdense plasmas with fixed ions, where $I$ and $λ$ are the laser intensity and wavelength, respectively.
We study the ionization dynamics in intense laser-droplet interaction using three-dimensional, relativistic particle-in-cell simulations. Of particular interest is the laser intensity and frequency regime for which initially transparent, wavelength-sized targets are not homogeneously ionized. Instead, the charge distribution changes both in space and in time on a sub-cycle scale. One may call this the extreme nonlinear Mie-optics regime. We find that - despite the fact that the plasma created at the droplet surface is overdense - oscillating electric fields may penetrate into the droplet under…
The excitation of nonlinear electrostatic waves, such as shock and solitons, by ultraintense laser interaction with overdense plasmas and related ion acceleration are investigated by numerical simulations. Stability of solitons and formation of shock waves is strongly dependent on the velocity distribution of ions. Monoenergetic components in ion spectra are produced by "pulsed" reflection from solitary waves. Possible relevance to recent experiments on "shock acceleration" is discussed.
The influence of surface plasma waves (SPW) on high harmonic generation (HHG) from the interaction of intense lasers with overdense plasma is analyzed. It is shown, that the surface waves lead to the emission of harmonics away from the optical axis. These off-axis harmonics violate the parity selection rules found from 1D models. Further, our investigations in the highly relativistic regime point towards the existence of a new SPW generation process.
A similarity theory is developed for ultra-relativistic laser-plasmas. It is shown that the most fundamental S-similarity is valid for both under- and overdense plasmas. Optimal scalings for laser wake field electron acceleration are obtained heuristically. The strong message of the present work is that the bubble acceleration regime [see Pukhov, Meyer-ter-Vehn, Appl. Phys. B, vol. 74, 355 (2002)] satisfies these optimal scalings.
The understanding of the physics of lasermatter interactions in the strongly relativistic regime is of fundamental importance. In this article, a new mechanism of fast electron generation at the vacuum-solid boundary of intense laser pulse interaction with overdense plasma is described. It is one that has no analogue in classical, non-relativistic laser-plasma interactions. Here, conclusive proof is provided that the key contribution to the fast electron generation is given by the zero points of the vector potential. We demonstrate that the new mechanism leads to scalings for the fast electron…
An overdense plasma layer irradiated by an intense light can exhibit dramatic nonlinear-optical effects due to a relativistic mass-effect of free electrons: highly-multiple hysteresises of reflection and transition, and emergence of gigantic "rogue waves". Those are trapped quasi-soliton field spikes inside the layer, sustained by an incident radiation with a tiny fraction of their peak intensity once they have been excited by orders of magnitude larger pumping. The phenomenon persists even in the layers with "soft" boundaries, as well as in a semi-infinite plasma with low absorption.
When a relativistically intense linearly polarized laser pulse is incident on an overdense plasma, a dense electron layer is formed on the plasma edge which relativistic motion results in high harmonic generation, ion acceleration and incoherent synchrotron emission of gamma-photons. Here we present a self-consistent analytical model that describes the edge motion and apply it to the problem of incoherent synchrotron emission by ultrarelativistic plasma electrons. The model takes into account both coherent radiation reaction from high harmonics and incoherent radiation reaction in the Landau-L…
We propose a method to generate femtosecond, relativistic and high-charge electron bunches using few-cycle and tightly focused radially polarized laser pulses. In this scheme, the incident laser pulse reflects off an overdense plasma that injects electrons into the reflected pulse. Particle-In-Cell simulations show that the plasma injects electrons ideally, resulting in a dramatic increase of charge and energy of the accelerated electron bunch in comparison to previous methods. This method can be used to generate femtosecond pC bunches with energies in the 1-10 MeV range using realistic laser …
Two scenarios for the penetration of relativistically intense laser radiation into an overdense plasma, accessible by self-induced transparency, are presented. For supercritical densities less than 1.5 times the critical one, penetration of laser energy occurs by soliton-like structures moving into the plasma. At higher background densities laser light penetrates over a finite length only, that increases with the incident intensity. In this regime plasma-field structures represent alternating electron layers separated by about half a wavelength by depleted regions.
In this work using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and analytical considerations we demonstrate intense high-order plasma surface harmonics carrying a time-varying orbital angular momentum (OAM) -- the self-torque. We show that by using two laser beams with different OAMs $l_1$ and $l_2$ and a certain delay between each other and shooting them obliquely on an overdense plasma target, one can generate harmonics with OAM spanning $nl_1$ to $nl_2$, where $n$ is the order of the harmonic. Such intense self-torqued harmonics can offer new possibilities in ultrafast spectroscopy.
We report on a numerical observation of the train of zeptosecond pulses produced by reflection of a relativistically intense femtosecond laser pulse from the oscillating boundary of an overdense plasma because of the Doppler effect. These pulses promise to become a unique experimental and technological tool since their length is of the order of the Bohr radius and the intensity is extremely high $\propto 10^{19}$ W/cm$^2$. We present the physical mechanism, analytical theory, and direct particle-in-cell simulations. We show that the harmonic spectrum is universal: the intensity of $n$th harmon…
We propose and demonstrate that relativistic harmonics with a slowly decaying power law are generated from a femtosecond lase pulse incident parallel to a micro-scale overdense plasma. It is shown that due to the excitation of a strong surface wave, dense electron nanobunches are continuously accelerated forward while oscillating in the transverse laser field. Even around the stationary phase point, relativistic gamma factors of the nanobunches increase considerably, leading to a much stronger attosecond burst, compared to the case with constant gamma. Our two-dimensional particle-in-cell simu…
This dissertation explores the interaction between high-intensity lasers and plasmas to accelerate electrons and produce radiation via experimental and computational efforts. The laser pulses used in this dissertation have ultrashort duration (< 100 fs), near-infrared to mid-infrared wavelength (0.8 $μ$m, 2 $μ$m, or 3.9 $μ$m), millijoules of energy, and high repetition rates (480 Hz or 20 Hz). The plasma sources applied are from solid-density targets (overdense) or gaseous targets (underdense). With the high-repetition-rate capability, statistical methods are employed to optimize certain aspec…
A self-consistent nonlinear hydrodynamic theory is presented of the propagation of a long and thin relativistic electron beam, for a typical plasma wake field acceleration configuration in an unmagnetized and overdense plasma. The random component of the trajectories of the beam particles as well as of their velocity spread is modelled by an anisotropic temperature, allowing the beam dynamics to be approximated as a 3-D adiabatic expansion/compression. {It is shown that even in the absence of the {nonlinear plasma wake force}, the localization of the beam in the transverse direction can be ach…
The similarity theory is derived for ultra-relativistic laser-plasma interactions. First, it is shown that the most fundamental S-similarity is valid for both under- and overdense plasmas. Then, the particular case of tenious plasma is considered in great detail. It is shown that the electron dynamics in this case has two characteristic scales. The fast scale corresponds to relaxation to some attractor solution. The slow dynamics describes an adiabatic evolution of this attractor. This leads to a remarkable wave breaking exclusion rule in the 3D geometry. A similarity theory for the slow dynam…
We report for the first time on the anticorrelated emission of high-order harmonics and energetic electron beams from a solid-density plasma with a sharp vacuum interface$-$plasma mirror$-$driven by an intense ultrashort laser pulse. We highlight the key role played by the nanoscale structure of the plasma surface during the interaction by measuring the spatial and spectral properties of harmonics and electron beams emitted by a plasma mirror. We show that the nanoscale behavior of the plasma mirror can be controlled by tuning the scale length of the electronic density gradient, which is measu…
Plasma high harmonics generation from an extremely intense short-pulse laser is explored by including the effects of ion motion, electron-ion collisions and radiation reaction force in the plasma dynamics. The laser radiation pressure induces plasma ion motion through the hole-boring effect resulting into the frequency shifting and widening of the harmonic spectra. Classical radiation reaction force slightly mitigates the frequency broadening caused by the ion motion. Based on the results and physical considerations, parameter maps highlighting optimum regions for generating a single intense a…
The existence and ballooning-stability of low aspect ratio stellarator equilibria is predicted for CNT with the aid of 3D numerical tools. In addition to having a low aspect ratio, CNT is characterized by a low magnetic field and small plasma volume. Also, highly overdense plasmas were recently heated in CNT by means of microwaves. These characteristics suggest that CNT might attain relatively high values of plasma $β$ and thus be of use in the experimental study of stellarator stability to high-$β$ instabilities such as ballooning modes. As a first step in that direction, here the ballooning …
A numerical analysis of the self-interaction induced by a relativistic electron/positron beam in the presence of an intense external longitudinal magnetic field in plasmas is carried out. Within the context of the Plasma Wake Field theory in the overdense regime, the transverse beam-plasma dynamics is described by a quantumlike Zakharov system of equations in the long beam limit provided by the Thermal Wave Model. In the limiting case of beam spot size much larger than the plasma wavelength, the Zakharov system is reduced to a 2D Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation, where the trap potential well is…
Generation of electromagnetic radiation near the second harmonic of the plasma frequency during the injection of an electron beam into a rippled-density plasma channel is investigated using both analytical theory and particle-in-cell simulations. The generating scheme is based on nonlinear interaction of the most unstable beam-driven potential plasma wave with its satellite arising due to scattering on the longitudinal modulation of plasma density. Resulting superluminal oscillations of electric current in a finite-size plasma channel radiate electromagnetic waves via the same mechanism which …
The excitation of a slow extraordinary wave in a overdense plasma from an ordinary wave impinging on the critical layer in the plane spanned by the density gradient and magnetic field is solved analytically by formulating the problem in terms of a parabolic cylinder equation. A formula for the angular dependence of the transmission coefficient is derived.
It is observed that the interaction of an intense ultra-short laser pulse with an overdense gas jet results in the pulse collapse and the deposition of a significant part of energy in a small and well localized volume in the rising part of the gas jet, where the electrons are efficiently accelerated and heated. A collisionless plasma expansion over 150 microns at a sub-relativistic velocity (~c/3) has been optically monitored in time and space, and attributed to the quasistatic field ionization of the gas associated to the hot electron current. Numerical simulations in good agreement with the …
