The excitation of nonlinear electrostatic waves, such as shock and solitons, by ultraintense laser interaction with overdense plasmas and related ion acceleration are investigated by numerical simulations. Stability of solitons and formation of shock waves is strongly dependent on the velocity distribution of ions. Monoenergetic components in ion spectra are produced by "pulsed" reflection from solitary waves. Possible relevance to recent experiments on "shock acceleration" is discussed.
The dusty plasma system (containing nonthermally distributed inertialess electron species, warm inertial ion species, and positively charged stationary dust species) is considered. The basic features of subsonic and supersonic modified-ion-acoustic solitary and shock waves formed in such a dusty plasma system have been investigated by the reductive perturbation method. It has been shown that positively charged dust species play a new role in favor of the formation of subsonic solitary and shock waves. On the other hand, the ion fluid temperature (represented by the parameter $σ$) and the elect…
The propagation characteristics of small-amplitude dust-acoustic (DA) solitary waves (SWs) and shocks are studied in an unmagnetized dusty plasma with a pair of trapped positive and negative ions. Using the standard reductive perturbation technique with two different scaling of stretched coordinates, the evolution equations for DA SWs and shocks are derived in the forms of complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and complex Burgers' equations. The effects of dust charge variation, the dust thermal pressure, and the ratios of positive to negative ion number densities as well as the free to trapped ion …
We present a fully nonlinear theory for dust acoustic (DA) shocks and DA solitary pulses in a strongly coupled dusty plasma, which have been recently observed experimentally by Heinrich et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 115002 (2009)], Teng et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 245005 (2009)], and Bandyopadhyay et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 065006 (2008)]. For this purpose, we use a generalized hydrodynamic model for the strongly coupled dust grains, accounting for arbitrary large amplitude dust number density compressions and potential distributions associated with fully nonlinear nonstationary DA waves.…
We investigate the propagation characteristics of electrostatic dust-acoustic (DA) solitary waves and shocks in a strongly coupled dusty plasma consisting of intertialess electrons and ions, and strongly coupled inertial charged dust particles. A generalized viscoelastic hydrodynamic model with the effects of electrostatic dust pressure associated with the strong coupling of dust particles, and a quantum hydrodynamic model with the effects of quantum forces associated with the Bohm potential and the exchange-correlation potential for electrons and ions are considered. Both the linear and weakl…
The nonlinear theory of two-dimensional ion-acoustic (IA) solitary waves and shocks (SWS) is revisited in a dissipative quantum plasma. The effects of dispersion, caused by the charge separation of electrons and ions and the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential for degenerate electrons, as well as, the dissipation due to the ion kinematic viscosity are considered. Using the reductive perturbation technique, a Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Burgers (KPB)-type equation, which governs the evolution of small-amplitude SWS in quantum plasmas, is derived, and its different solutions are obtained…
We study the effects of ion-dust collisions and ion kinematic viscosities on the linear ion-acoustic instability as well as the nonlinear propagation of small amplitude solitary waves and shocks (SWS) in a negative ion plasma with immobile charged dusts. {The existence of two linear ion modes, namely the `fast' and `slow' waves is shown, and their properties are analyzed in the collisional negative ion plasma.} {Using the standard reductive perturbation technique, we derive a modified Korteweg-de Vries-Burger (KdVB) equation which describes the evolution of small amplitude SWS.} {The profiles …
Dust-ion-acoustic damped solitary waves and shocks in laboratory and Saturn's E-ring magnetized nonthermal dusty plasmas with anisotropic ion pressure and dust-charge fluctuation
Dust acoustic (DA) waves evolving into shocklets are investigated in the Comet Halley plasma system relaxing to Maxwellian, Kappa and Cairns distributions. Here dynamics of dust is described by the fully nonlinear continuity and momentum equations. A set of two characteristic wave nonlinear equations is obtained and numerically solved to examine the DA solitary pulse which develops into oscillatory shocklets with the course of time such as at time τ=0, symmetric solitary pulses are formed, which develop into oscillatory shocklets. It has been observed that variation in superthermality strongly…
A viscous dusty plasma containing Kappa distributed electrons, positive warm viscous ions and constant negatively charged dust grains with viscosity have been considered to study the modes of dust ion acoustic waves (DIAWs) theoretically and numerically. The derivations and basic features of shock and solitary waves with different plasma parameters like Mach number, finite temperature coefficient, unperturbed dust streaming velocity, kinematic viscosity of dust etc. of this DIAWs mode have been performed. Considering the dynamical equation from Korteweg de Vries(KdV) equation, a phase portrait…
The expansion of a radial blast shell into an ambient plasma is modeled with a particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. The unmagnetized plasma consists of electrons and protons. The formation and evolution of an electrostatic shock is observed, which is trailed by ion-acoustic solitary waves that grow on the beam of the blast shell ions in the post-shock plasma. In spite of the initially radially symmetric outflow, the solitary waves become twisted and entangled and, hence, they break the radial symmetry of the flow. The waves and their interaction with the shocked ambient ions slows down the blast…
We present a statistical analysis of more than two thousand bipolar electrostatic solitary waves (ESW) collected from ten quasi-perpendicular Earth's bow shock crossings by Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft. We developed and implemented a correction procedure for reconstruction of actual electric fields, velocities, and other properties of ESW from measurements, whose spatial scales are typically comparable with or smaller than spatial distance between voltage-sensitive probes. We determined the optimal ratio between frequency response factors of axial and spin plane antennas to be around 1…
By considering the continuity, Navier-Stoks and Poisson's equations in a non-relativistic frame work for plasmas, we study the behavior of small amplitude ion acoustic solitary waves in plasmas under the influence of a varying magnetic field. The result is a nonlinear wave equation which complies with the KdV-Burgers (KdVB) equation, surprisingly in the absence of thermal pressure or any dissipative effects. We show that the complete set of equations, by considering the varying magnetic field, create solitary waves which radiate energy during their traveling in the medium. An interesting resul…
The formation of small but finite amplitude electrostatic shocks in the propagation of quantum ion-acoustic waves (QIAWs) obliquely to an external magnetic field is reported in a quantum electron-positron-ion (e-p-i) plasma. Such shocks are seen to have double-layer (DL) structures composed of the compressive and accompanying rarefactive slow-wave fronts. Existence of such DL shocks depends critically on the quantum coupling parameter $H$ associated with the Bohm potential and the positron to electron density ratio $δ$. The profiles may, however, steepen initially and reach a steady state with…
Observations of the interaction of an intense λ0 \approx 10 μm laser pulse with near-critical overdense plasmas (ne = 1.8 - 3 nc) are presented. For the first time, transverse optical probing is used to show a recession of the front surface caused by radiation pressure driven hole-boring by the laser pulse with an initial velocity > 10^6 ms-1, and the resulting collisionless shocks. The collisionless shock propagates through the plasma, dissipates into an ion-acoustic solitary wave, and eventually becomes collisional as it slows further. These conclusions are supported by PIC simulations which…
We study the nonlinear propagation of dust-ion acoustic (DIA) solitary waves in an unmagnetized dusty plasma which consists of electrons, both positive and negative ions and negatively charged immobile dust grains. Starting from a set of hydrodynamic equations with the ion thermal pressures and ion kinematic viscosities included, and using a standard reductive perturbation method, the Kadomtsev-Petviashivili Burgers (KPB) equation is derived, which governs the evolution of DIA shocks. A stationary solution of the KPB equation is obtained and its properties are analysed with different plasma nu…
Here we study the structure of a highly ionizing shock wave in a gas of high atmospheric pressure. We take into account the gas ionization when the gas temperature reaches few orders of an ionization potential. It is shown that after gasdynamic temperature-raising shock and formation of a highly-ionized nonisothermal plasma $T_e>>T_i$ only the solitary ion-sound wave (soliton) can propagate in this plasma. In such a wave the charge separation occurs: electrons and ions form the double electric layer with the electric field. The shock wave form, its amplitude and front width are obtained.
Over the last few decades, different types of plasma waves (e.g., the ion acoustic waves (IAWs), electrostatic solitary waves (ESWs), upper/lower hybrid waves, the Langmuir waves etc.) have been observed in the upstream, downstream and ramp regions of the collisionless interplanetary (IP) shocks. These waves appear as short duration (only a few milliseconds at 1 au) electric field signatures in the in-situ measurements, with typical frequencies $\sim1-10$ kHz. A number of IAW features at the IP shocks seem to be unexplained by kinetic models and requires a new modeling effort. Thus, this paper…
We present a detailed comparison of two self-consistent equation-of-state models which differ from their electronic contribution: the atom in a spherical cell and the atom in a jellium of charges. It is shown that both models are well suited for the calculation of Hugoniot shock adiabats in the high pressure range (1 Mbar-10 Gbar), and that the atom-in-a-jellium model provides a better treatment of pressure ionization. Comparisons with experimental data are also presented. Shell effects on shock adiabats are reviewed in the light of these models. They lead to additional features not only in th…
We present the first quantified measure of the rate of energy dissipated per unit volume by high frequency electromagnetic waves in the transition region of the Earth's collisionless bow shock using data from the THEMIS spacecraft. Every THEMIS shock crossing examined with available wave burst data showed both low frequency (< 10 Hz) magnetosonic-whistler waves and high frequency (> 10 Hz) electromagnetic and electrostatic waves throughout the entire transition region and into the magnetosheath. The waves in both frequency ranges had large amplitudes, but the higher frequency waves, which are …
