The excitation of electrostatic waves in plasma by laser electromagnetic pulse is important as it provides a scheme by which the power from the laser electromagnetic (EM) field can be transferred into the plasma medium. The paper presents a fundamentally new ponderomotive pressure-driven mechanism of excitation of electrostatic waves in an overdense magnetized plasma by a finite laser pulse. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations using the EPOCH-4.17.10 framework have been utilized for the study of a finite laser pulse interacting with a magnetized overdense plasma medium. The external magnetic field is chosen to be aligned parallel to the laser propagation direction. In this geometry, the electromagnetic wave propagation inside the plasma is identified as whistler or R and L waves. The group velocity of these waves being different, a clear spatial separation of the R and L pulses are visible. In addition, excitation of electrostatic perturbation associated with the EM pulses propagating inside the plasma is also observed. These electrostatic perturbations are important as they couple laser energy to the plasma medium. The excitation of electrostatic oscillations are understood here by a fundamentally new mechanism of charge separation created by the difference between the ponderomotive force (of the electromagnetic pulse) felt by the two plasma species, viz., the electrons and the ions in a magnetized plasma.
One-dimensional steady-state plasma-field structures in overdense plasma are studied assuming that the electron temperature is uniform over plasma bulk and the ions are stationary. It is shown that there may exist solutions for electron distributions with cavitation regions in plasma under the action of ponderomotive force
The mechanism of harmonic generation in both O and X-mode configurations for a magnetized plasma has been explored here in detail with the help of Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. A detailed characterization of both the reflected and transmitted electromagnetic radiation propagating in the bulk of the plasma has been carried out for this purpose. The efficiency of harmonic generation is shown to increase with the incident laser intensity. Dependency of harmonic efficiency has also been found on magnetic field strength. This work demonstrates that there is an optimum value of the magnetic fi…
We review recent PIC simulation results which show that double-sided irradiation of a thin over- dense plasma slab by ultra-intense laser pulses from both sides can lead to sustained comoving acceleration of surface electrons to energies much higher than the conventional ponderomotive limit. The acceleration stops only when the electrons drift transversely out of the laser beam. We show latest 2.5D results of parameter studies based on finite laser spot size and discuss future laser experiments that can be used to test these results.
One dimensional Particle-in-cell simulations using OSIRIS-4.0 has been conducted to study the interaction of a laser electromagnetic pulse with an overdense magnetized plasma target. The external magnetic field has been chosen to be directed along the laser propagation direction. This geometry supports the propagation of right (R) and left (L) circularly polarised electromagnetic waves in the plasma. The laser pulse is allowed to propagate inside the plasma when its frequency falls in the pass band of the dispersion curves of L and/or R waves. The strength of the applied external magnetic fiel…
We study the laser-driven acceleration of electrons from overdense hydrogen clusters to energies of up to 13 MeV in laser forward direction and several hundreds of keV in an outer ring-like structure. The use of cryogenic hydrogen allows for high repetition-rate operation and examination of the influence of source parameters like temperature and gas flow. The outer ring-like structure of accelerated electrons, originating from the interaction, that is robust against the change of laser and target parameters can be observed for low electron densities of ca. 3$\times$10$^{16}$ cm$^{-3}$. For hig…
The excitation of wake waves by a relativistic homogeneous electron bunch passing through cold magnetized plasma at equilibrium is studied for arbitrary values of the ratio of bunch density to plasma density. The analysis is based on the assumption that the magnetic field is sufficiently strong ($ω_B\gg ω_p$, where $ω_p$ and $ω_B$ are the electron plasma and cyclotron frequences respectively). The periodic and nonperiodic solutions for the momentum of plasma electrons inside and outside the bunch are analyzed. It was shown that the presence of strong external magnetic field may increase the am…
Terahertz (THz) radiation by beating of two laser beams in a groove density and magnetized hot plasma is discussed theoretically. In this mechanism, the ponderomotive force leads to a nonlinear oscillatory current that resonantly excites THz radiation at the frequency upper hybrid. It is interesting to find that the maximum THz radiation in the various electron temperature, therefore, exited an optimum temperature for the parameters such as beating frequency, transverse distance from lasers beam center and strength of the static magnetic field that THz radiation can be maximized.
We consider a recently derived kinetic model for weakly relativistic quantum plasmas. We find that that the effects of spin-orbit interaction and Thomas precession may alter the linear dispersion relation for a magnetized plasma in case of high plasma densities and/or strong magnetic fields. Furthermore, the ponderomotive force induced by an electromagnetic pulse is studied for an unmagnetized plasma. It turns out that for this case the spin-orbit interaction always give a significant contribution to the quantum part of the ponderomotive force.
Thermal fusion plasmas initiated by standing whistler waves are investigated numerically by two- and one-dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations. When a standing whistler wave collapses due to the wave breaking of ion plasma waves, the energy of the electromagnetic waves transfers directly to the ion kinetic energy. Here we find that the ion heating by the standing whistler wave is operational even in multi-dimensional simulations of multi-ion species targets, such as deuterium-tritium (DT) ices and solid ammonia borane (H$_6$BN). The energy conversion efficiency to ions becomes as high as 15…
Intense radiation field can modify plasma properties, the corresponding refractive index, and lead to such nonlinear propagation effects as self-focusing. We estimate the corresponding effects in pair plasma, both in unmagnetized and strongly magnetically dominated case. First, in the unmagnetized pair plasma the ponderomotive force does not lead to charge separation, but to density depletion. Second, for astrophysically relevant plasmas of pulsar magnetospheres, (and possible loci of Fast Radio Bursts), where cyclotron frequency $ω_B$ dominates over plasma frequency $ω_p$ and the frequency of…
Wave induced attraction of matter is a unique aspect of ponderomotive forcing by electromagnetic (e/m) waves in plasmas. The Miller force, sometimes denoted the gradient force, is of particular interest, because the direction as well as magnitude of the Miller force on a plasma depends on the wave frequency. While plasma is usually considered in its gaseous form, solid bodies can also be treated as plasma, denoted solid-state plasma. The first experimental proof of wave effects in magnetized solid-state plasmas (Lundqvist, 1949, Herlofson, 1950) came after the suggestion by Alfvén (1942) on th…
Reduced equations that describe low-frequency plasma dynamics play an important role in our understanding of plasma behavior over long time scales. One of the oldest paradigms for reduced plasma dynamics involves the ponderomotive Hamiltonian formulation of the oscillation-center dynamics of charged particles (over slow space-time scales) in a weakly-nonuniform background plasma perturbed by an electromagnetic field with fast space-time scales. These reduced plasma equations are derived here by Lie-transform and variational methods for the case of a weakly-magnetized background plasma. In part…
We present a novel scheme to obtain robust, narrowband, and tunable THz emission by using a nano-dimensional overdense plasma target that is irradiated by two counter-propagating detuned laser pulses. So far, no narrowband THz sources with a field strength of GV/m-level have been reported from laser-solid interaction. We report intense THz pulses at beat-frequency ($\simeq$30THz) generated due to strong plasma current produced by the beat ponderomotive force in the colliding region, with an unprecedentedly high peak field strength of 11.9GV/m and spectral width $(Δf/f$$\simeq$$5.3\%)$ from 2D …
A numerical analysis of the self-interaction induced by a relativistic electron/positron beam in the presence of an intense external longitudinal magnetic field in plasmas is carried out. Within the context of the Plasma Wake Field theory in the overdense regime, the transverse beam-plasma dynamics is described by a quantumlike Zakharov system of equations in the long beam limit provided by the Thermal Wave Model. In the limiting case of beam spot size much larger than the plasma wavelength, the Zakharov system is reduced to a 2D Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation, where the trap potential well is…
The nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic (EM) electron-cyclotron waves (whistlers) along an external magnetic field, and their modulation by electrostatic small but finite amplitude ion-acoustic density perturbations are investigated in a uniform quantum plasma with intrinsic spin of electrons. The effects of the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential and the combined effects of the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive forces (CPF and SPF respectively) are taken into consideration. The latter modify the local plasma density in a self-consistent manner. The coupled …
Recently achieved high intensities of short laser pulses open new prospects in their application to hole boring in inhomogeneous overdense plasmas and for ignition in precompressed DT fusion targets. A simple analytical model and numerical simulations demonstrate that pulses with intensities exceeding 1022 W/cm2 may penetrate deeply into the plasma as a result of efficient ponderomotive acceleration of ions in the forward direction. The penetration depth as big as hundreds of microns depends on the laser fluence, which has to exceed a few tens of GJ/cm2. The fast ions, accelerated at the botto…
Superponderomotive-energy electrons are observed experimentally from the interaction of an intense laser pulse with a relativistically transparent target. For a relativistically transparent target, kinetic modeling shows that the generation of energetic electrons is dominated by energy transfer within the main, classically overdense, plasma volume. The laser pulse produces a narrowing, funnel-like channel inside the plasma volume that generates a field structure responsible for the electron heating. The field structure combines a slowly evolving azimuthal magnetic field, generated by a strong …
It is shown by particle-in-cell simulation that intense circularly polarized (CP) laser light can be contained in the cavity of a solid-density circular Al-plasma shell for hundreds of light-wave periods before it is dissipated by laser-plasma interaction. A right-hand CP laser pulse can propagate almost without reflection into the cavity through a highly magnetized overdense H-plasma slab filling the entrance hole. The entrapped laser light is then multiply reflected at the inner surfaces of the slab and shell plasmas, gradually losing energy to the latter. Compared to that of the incident la…
Waves play an essential role in many aspects of plasma science, such as plasma manipulation and diagnostics. Due to the complexity of the governing equations, approximate models are often necessary to describe wave dynamics. In this dissertation, waves are treated as geometric objects of a variational theory rather than formal solutions of specific PDEs. This approach simplifies calculations, highlights the underlying wave symmetries, and leads to improved modeling of wave dynamics. This thesis presents two breakthroughs that were obtained in the general theory of waves. The first main contrib…
An Electromagnetic (EM) pulse falling on a plasma medium from vacuum can either reflect or propagate inside the plasma depending on whether it is overdense or underdense. In a magnetised plasma, however, there are usually several pass and stop bands for the EM wave depending on the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the propagation direction. The EM wave while propagating in a plasma can excite electrostatic disturbances in the plasma [1, 2]. In this work Particle - In - Cell simulations have been carried out to illustrate the complete transparency of the EM wave propagation ins…
The excitation of electrostatic wakefields in a magnetized spin quantum plasma by the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive force (CPF and SPF, respectively) due to whistler waves is reported. The nonlinear dynamics of the whistlers and the wakefields is shown to be governed by a coupled set of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and driven Boussinesq-like equations. It is found that the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential introduces two characteristic length scales, which lead to the excitation of multiple wakefields in a strongly magnetized dense plasma (with a typical mag…
The interaction of laser with plasmas leads to many interesting phenomena which includes laser energy absorption, mode conversion, energetic particle generation etc. In this work, the excitation of Korteweg - de Vries (KdV) Alfven solitons in plasma is demonstrated with the help of 2-D Particle - In - Cell (PIC) simulations. For this purpose, the propagation of a pulsed $CO_2$ (with a wavelength of $10 μm$) laser normally incident on an overdense plasma target is considered in the presence of an external magnetic field. The magnitude of the external magnetic field is chosen so as to have the e…
Magnetic reconnection in the solar corona is thought to be unstable to the formation of multiple interacting plasmoids, and previous studies have shown that plasmoid dynamics can trigger MHD waves of different modes propagating outward from the reconnection site. However, variations in plasma parameters and magnetic field strength in the vicinity of a coronal reconnection site may lead to wave reflection and mode conversion. In this paper we investigate the reflection and refraction of fast magnetoacoustic waves near a reconnection site. Under a justified assumption of an analytically specifie…
