The system is fully integrated into the general environmental monitoring of the ZEUS detector and data has been collected over a period of 5 years. The primary aim of defining p…
We present an expression for the covariance matrix for the set of state vectors describing a track fitted with a Kalman filter. We demonstrate that this expression facilitates the use of a Kalman filter track model in a minimum $χ^2$ algorithm for the alignment of tracking detectors. We also show that it allows to incorporate vertex constraints in such a procedure without refitting the tracks.
The complex system of the CMS all-silicon Tracker, with 15\,148 silicon strip and 1440 silicon pixel modules, requires sophisticated alignment procedures. In order to achieve an optimal track-parameter resolution, the position and orientation of its modules need to be determined with a precision of few micrometers. The alignment of pixels modules is crucial for the analyses requiring a precise vertex reconstruction. The aligned geometry is based on the analysis of several million reconstructed tracks recorded during the commissioning of the CMS experiment, both with cosmic rays and with the fi…
The ATLAS detector, built at one of the interaction points of the Large Hadron Collider, is operational and has been collecting data from cosmic rays. This paper describes the track based alignment of the ATLAS Inner Detector tracker which was performed using cosmic rays collected in 2008. The alignment algorithms are described and the performance of the alignment is demonstrated by showing the resulting hit residuals and comparing track parameters of upper and lower segments of tracks. The impact of the alignment on physics measurements is discussed.

Each ASIC used in the design has 104 input channels with delay compensation circuitry providing steps of ~ 3 ns and a full range of 25 ns for each channel. Detailed implementation of the scheme including majority logic to suppress single-event effects is presented. The scheme is flexible and fully synthesizable. The approach is adaptable…

The alignment algorithms were already validated on: Combined Test Beam data, Cosmic Ray runs and simulated physics events. The alignment chain was tested on a daily basis in exercises that mimicked ATLAS data taking operations. ID commissioning after final installation into …
The Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB accelerator observed the first collisions in April this year. Until mid-summer, the first commissioning run uses a reduced version of the full vertex detector. Nevertheless, this phase is an excellent opportunity to improve and test the alignment and calibration procedures being prepared for the first physics runs starting in spring 2019. The procedure presented is based on Millepede II tool to solve the large minimization problem emerging in the track-based alignment and calibration of the pixel and strip detectors, the drift chamber or the muon system. …

The activity in the field of diffractive physics at the Large Hadron Collider has been constantly increasing. This includes the planning for additional dedicated apparatus -- horizontal forward proton detectors. This work focuses on the problems related to the alignment of such devices. The effects of the misalignment of the detectors on their geometric acceptance and on the reconstruction of the proton kinematics are studied. The requirements for the alignment precision are inferred for different types of possible measurements.
The inner silicon detector of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment (CMS) at CERN's LHC consists of 16588 modules. Charged-particle tracks in the detector are used to improve the accuracy to which the position and orientation of the modules is known. This contribution focuses on the Millepede-II algorithm, one of the two alignment algorithms used by CMS. Recently an advanced track model has been introduced into the CMS alignment procedure, which is based on the "Broken Lines" model and is able to take multiple Coulomb scattering in the detector material properly into account. We show the unique…
The Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is designed as a high energy particle detector for probing cosmic-rays and $γ-$rays in a wide energy range. The trajectory of the incident particle is mainly measured by the Silicon-Tungsten tracKer-converter (STK) sub-detector, which heavily depends on the precise internal alignment correction as well as the accuracy of the global coordinate system. In this work, we carried out a global alignment method to validate the potential displacement of these sub-detectors, and particularly demonstrated that the track reconstruction of STK can well satisfy the…
The alignment of the ATLAS Inner Detector is performed with a track-based algorithm. The aim of the detector alignment is to provide an accurate description of the detector geometry such that track parameters are accurately determined and bias free. The detector alignment is validated and improved by studying resonant decays ($J/ψ$ and $Z$ to $μ^+μ^-$). The detailed study of these resonances (together with the properties of the tracks of their decay products) allows to detect and correct for alignment weak modes such as detector curls and radial deformations that may bias the momentum and/or t…
The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a detailed study of ionization cooling to evaluate the feasibility of the technique. To carry out this program, MICE requires all of its detectors to reconstruct space points in a globally consistent fashion. The beam-based alignment constants were found to be more accurate than the survey for the scintillating-fibre trackers lodged inside the bores of the superconducting magnets. This alignment algorithm can achieve unbiased measurements of the trackers rotation angles with a resolution of 6 mrad/$\sqrt{N}$ and of their position with …
In 2015, the LHCb experiment established a new and unique software trigger strategy with the purpose of increasing the purity of the signal events by applying the same algorithms online and offline. To achieve this, real-time calibration and alignment of all LHCb sub-systems is needed to provide vertexing, tracking, and particle identification of the best possible quality. The calibration of the refractive index of the RICH radiators, the calibration of the Hybrid Photon Detector image, and the alignment of the RICH mirror system, are reported in this contribution. The stability of the RICH pe…

The thermal properties of the LHCb Vertex Locator (VELO) are studied using the real-time detector alignment procedure. The variation of the position and orientation of the detector elements as a function of the operating temperature of the VELO is presented. This study uses a dataset collected by the LHCb experiment during a VELO temperature scan performed at the end of LHC Run 2 (October 2018). Significant shrinkage of the VELO modules is observed at the operating temperature of $-30^\circ$ compared to the laboratory measurements on a single module taken at a range of temperatures from $+45^\…
The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector is crucial for the identification of charged particles in the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS. The detector commissioning was completed in 2016 by the precise alignment of mirrors using reconstructed tracks. The alignment procedure and measurement of the basic performance are described. Ring radius resolution, ring centre resolution, single hit resolution and mean number of hits per ring are evaluated for positron tracks. The contribution of the residual mirror misalignment to the performance is calculated.
LHCb is one of the four main experiments of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project, which will start at CERN in 2008. The experiment is primarily dedicated to B-Physics and hence requires precise vertex reconstruction. The silicon vertex locator (VELO) has a single hit precision of better than 10 micron and is used both off-line and in the trigger. These requirements place strict constraints on its alignment. Additional challenges for the alignment arise from the detector being retracted between each fill of the LHC and from its unique circular disc r/phi strip geometry. This paper describes …

Among all the upgrades that were made during the past years, a new state-of-the-art acquisition system has been tested during this beam time. This internship report details the behavior of this new system.
The ALEPH Silicon Vertex Detector features an optical fibre laser system to monitor its mechanical stability. The operating principle and the general performance of the laser system are described. The experience obtained during 1997 and 1998 operations confirms the important role that such a system can have with respect to the detector alignment requirements. In particular, the laser system has been used to monitor short-term temperature-related effects and long-term movements. These results and a description of the laser-based alignment correction applied to the 1998 data are presented.
The Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC (STAR) uses the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to perform tracking and particle identification. In order to improve the corrections (such as space charge) and monitor non-static distortions of the TPC, GEM-based chambers (GMT) were installed at eight locations outside the TPC where they will provide optimal sensitivity to the distortions. In order to reach this goal, the ionization clusters were measured by using the ADC signals in each module. The positions of clusters and their deviations from track projections enabled alignment of the GMT modules with respect t…

We present a technique for, and results of, a precise relative alignment of the drift chamber wires of the CDF tracker. This alignment has been an important component of the track momentum calibration, which is the basis for the charged-lepton calibration for the measurement of the W boson mass at CDF.
The front face of the CDF central calorimeter is being equipped with a new Preshower detector, based on scintillator tiles read out by WLS fibers, in order to cope with the luminosity increase provided by the Main Injector during the Tevatron's Run II data taking. A light yield of about 40 pe/MIP at the tile exit was obtained, exceeding the design requirements.
The alignment of tracking detectors is crucial for the physics programme at the LHC, especially for precision measurements like the W mass. The alignment of the ATLAS silicon tracking detectors with a total of 5832 modules poses an unprecedented challenge. In this poster, two track-based alignment algorithms at ATLAS will be covered: the Global chi^2 Algorithm based on chi^2 minimisation, and the Robust Alignment Algorithm based on centering residual distributions. On a time scale of minutes and hours, the geometry of the silicon tracking detectors can be monitored with the Frequency Scanning …

This new preshower detector is based on scintillator tiles coupled to wavelength-shifting fibers read out by multi-anode photomultipliers and has a total of 3,072 readout channels. The replacement of the old gas detector was required due to an expected increase in instantaneous luminosity of the Tevatron collider in the next few years. Calorimeter coverage, jet energy resolution, and electron and photon identification are among the expected improvements. The final d…
LHCb will commence data taking as the first dedicated heavy flavour experiment at a hadron collider in 2008. A very high hit precision from its vertex detector (VELO) is essential to meet the tight requirements of vertex reconstruction in B-physics. The single hit precision of the VELO is better than 10 micron. However, the VELO is operated only 8 mm from the beam and must be retracted and reinserted each LHC fill. Hence, the detector places unique demands on its alignment algorithm. The partially assembled VELO system has already been tested in a beam test. The novel software alignment method…
The CMS silicon tracking system measures the trajectories of charged particles with a hit resolution of the order of microns in the pixel detector and tens of microns in the strip detector. One of the most important inputs for track reconstruction is the precision with which the tracker geometry is known. Therefore the position, orientation, and curvature of each tracker sensor must be precisely determined. Changes in the operating conditions can cause movements in the different substructures and also in the sensors. For maintaining the targeted precision, frequent corrections are needed, and …

The Belle II tracker is composed of the DEPFET based pixel silicon detector, four layers of double sided silicon strip detector, a low material budget drift chamber, all three operating in a solenoidal 1.5 T B field, which is affected by the final focusing system of the accelerator. Each component of these three components must be aligned with an accuracy significantly better than the point resolution of the detector that for the PXD is order of 10 microns. The Belle…

The $g-2$ experiment successfully completed its second data taking period (Run-2) between March and July 2019, with the analysis of Run-1 and Run-2 data currently proceeding. The final goal of the experiment is to determine the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_μ=\frac{g-2}{2}$, to a precision of 140 ppb. Essential to reducing the systematic uncertainty on $a_μ$ through measurements of the muon beam profile are the in-vacuum straw tracking detectors. A crucial prerequisite to obtaining accurate distributions of the beam profile is the internal alignment of the trackers, which is described here, along …
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is an experiment proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and probe the fundamental properties of neutrino oscillation. The JUNO central detector is a spherical liquid scintillator detector with 20 kton fiducial mass. It is required to achieve a $3\%/\sqrt{E(MeV)}$ energy resolution with very low radioactive background, which is a big challenge to the detector design. In order to ensure the detector performance can meet the physics requirements, reliable detector simulation is necessary to provide useful information for detector des…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment designed to measure the neutrino mass hierarchy using a central detector (CD), which contains 20 kton liquid scintillator (LS) surrounded by about 17,000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Due to the large fiducial volume and huge number of PMTs, the simulation of a muon particle passing through the CD with the Geant4 toolkit becomes an extremely computation-intensive task. This paper presents a fast simulation implementation using a so-called voxel method: for scintillation photons generated in a certain LS…

The inner tracking system of the CMS experiment, which comprises Silicon Pixel and Silicon Strip detectors, is designed to provide a precise measurement of the momentum of charged particles and to reconstruct the primary and secondary vertices. The movements of the different substructures of the tracker detectors driven by the operating conditions during data taking, require to regularly update the detector geometry in order to accurately describe the position, orientation, and curvature of the tracker modules. The procedure in which new parameters of the tracker geometry are determined is kno…

The experiment-wide effort on the analysis of Run-1 data is nearing completion, with the announcement of the first result expected in the coming months. The final goal of the experiment is to determine the muon magnetic anomaly to a precision of 140 ppb. This level of precision will provide indirect evidence of new physics, if the central value agrees with the previously-measured value of the magnetic anomaly. Essential in reducing the systematic uncertainty, through measurements of the muon be…

The uranium/liquid-argon calorimeters and central muon detector, remaining from Run I, are discussed briefly. We also present the associated e…
The muon spectrometer of the ATLAS experiment is one of the largest detectors ever built. At the LHC, new physics signs could appear through high momentun muons (1 TeV). Identification and precise momentum measurement of such muons are two of the main challenges of the ATLAS muon spectrometer. In order to get a good resolution for high energy muons (i.e. 10% at 1 TeV), the accuracy on the alignment of precision chambers must be of the order of 50 microns. Several procedures have been developed to reach such a precision. This document describes complementary techniques used to align the muon su…

The software alignment of planar tracking detectors using samples of charged particle trajectories may lead to global detector distortions that affect vertex and momentum resolution. We present an alignment procedure that constrains such distortions by making use of samples of decay vertices reconstructed from two or more trajectories and putting constraints on their invariant mass. We illustrate the method by using a sample of invariant-mass constrained vertices from D^0 --> K^- pi^+ decays to remove a curvature bias in the LHCb spectrometer.
This conference proceeding presents the first results of the full CMS Tracker alignment based on several million reconstructed tracks from the cosmic data taken during the commissioning runs with the detector in its final position and magnetic field present. The all-silicon design of the CMS Tracker poses new challenges in aligning a complex system with 15\,148 silicon strip and 1440 silicon pixel modules. For optimal track-parameter resolution, the position and orientation of its modules need to be determined with a precision of about one micrometer. The modules, well illuminated by cosmic ra…
