Nanostructured metal surfaces comprised of periodically arranged spherical voids are grown by electrochemical deposition through a self-assembled template. Detailed measurements of the angle- and orientation-dependent reflectivity reveal the spectral dispersion, from which we identify the presence of both delocalized Bragg- and localized Mie-plasmons. These couple strongly producing bonding and anti-bonding mixed plasmons with anomalous dispersion properties. Appropriate plasmon engineering of the void morphology selects the plasmon spatial and spectral positions, allowing these plasmonic crystal films to be optimised for a wide range of sensing applications.
Plasmonic color filters employing a single optically-thick nanostructured metal layer have recently generated considerable interest as an alternative to colorant-based color filtering technologies, due to their reliability, ease of fabrication, high color tunability. However, their relatively low transmission efficiency (~30%) is an important challenge that needs to be addressed. The present work reports, for the first time, a novel plasmonic subtractive color filtering scheme that exploits the counter-intuitive phenomenon of extraordinary low transmission (ELT) through an ultrathin nanostruct…
Structured metallic tips are increasingly important for optical spectroscopies such as tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), with plasmonic resonances frequently cited as a mechanism for electric field enhancement. We probe the local optical response of sharp and spherical-tipped atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips using a scanning hyperspectral imaging technique to identify plasmonic behaviour. Localised surface plasmon resonances which radiatively couple with far-field light are found only for spherical AFM tips, with little response for sharp AFM tips, in agreement with numerical simulatio…
The phenomenon of a dispersion bandgap opening between low-loss spectral windows of odd and even plasmonic modes in a layered insulator-metal-insulator plasmonic waveguide is introduced. Beginning with a three layer plasmonic dispersion relation, we explain and numerically confirm the existence of the plasmonic bandgap, and investigate its properties at a very broad spectrum range from ultraviolet to far infrared. The nature of the observed bandgap opening is explained in terms of the near-zero value of an effective permittivity for plasmonic modes in the waveguide. The adjustment of the plasm…
A novel type of a plasmonic waveguide has been proposed featuring an "open" design that is easy to manufacture, simple to excite and that offers a convenient access to a plasmonic mode. Optical properties of photonic bandgap (PBG) plasmonic waveguides are investigated experimentally by leakage radiation microscopy and numerically using the finite element method confirming photonic bandgap guidance in a broad spectral range. Propagation and localization characteristics of a PBG plasmonic waveguide have been discussed as a function of the wavelength of operation, waveguide core size and the numb…
We report on reflection spectra of caesium atoms in close vicinity of a nanostructured metallic meta-surface. We show that the hyperfine sub-Doppler spectrum of the $6S_{1/2} - 6P_{3/2}$ resonance transition at 852 nm is strongly affected by the coupling to the plasmonic resonance of the nanostructure. Fine tuning of dispersion and positions of the atomic lines in the near-field of plasmonic metamaterials could have uses and implications for the atom-based metrology, sensing and the development of atom-on-a-chip devices.
Optical computing uses photons as information carriers, opening up the possibility for ultrahigh-speed and ultrawide-band information processing. Integrated all-optical logic devices are indispensible core components of optical computing systems. However, up to now, little experimental progress has been made in nanoscale all-optical logic discriminators, which have the function of discriminating and encoding incident light signals according to wavelength. Here, we report a strategy to realize a nanoscale all-optical logic discriminator based on plasmonic bandgap engineering in a planar plasmon…
Transparent conducting oxides (TCO) are emerging as possible alternative constituent materials to replace noble metals such as silver and gold for low-loss plasmonic and metamaterial (MMs) applications in the near infrared (NIR) regime. The optical characteristics of TCOs have been studied to evaluate the functionalities and potential of these materials as metal substitutes in plasmonic and MM devices, even apart from their usual use as electrode materials. However, patterning TCOs at the nanoscale, which is necessary for plasmonic and MM devices, is not well-studied. This paper investigates n…
Photoluminescence is a phenomenon of significant interest due to its wide range of technological applications in plasmonics, nanolasers, spasers, lasing spasers, loss compensation and gain in metamaterials, and luminescent media. Nanostructured materials are known to have very different luminescence characteristics to bulk samples or planar films. Here we show that by engineering a nanostructured meta-surface, we can choose the position of photoluminescence absorption and emission lines of thin gold films. The nanostructuring also aids to strong enhancement of the emission from gold, by a fact…

Bandgap control is of central importance for semiconductor technologies. The traditional means of control is to dope the lattice chemically, electrically or optically with charge carriers. Here, we demonstrate for the first time a widely tunable bandgap (renormalisation up to 650 meV at room-temperature) in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors by coherently doping the lattice with plasmonic hot electrons. In particular, we integrate tungsten-disulfide (WS$_2$) monolayers into a self-assembled plasmonic crystal, which enables coherent coupling between semiconductor excitons and plasmon resonance…
Thermal imaging and sensing technologies offer critical information about our thermally radiant world, and in recent years, have seen dramatic increases in usage for a range of applications. However, the cost and technical finesse of manufacturing infrared optical components remain a major barrier towards the democratization of these technologies. In this report, we present a solution processed plasmonic reflective filter or PRF as a scalable and inexpensive thermal infrared optic. The PRF selectively absorbs sunlight and specularly reflects thermal infrared TIR wavelengths with performance co…
Metasurfaces offer unconventional control of light to shape optical wavefronts within two-dimensional nanoscale structures. A nanostructured metallic thin film can establish an exclusive relationship between its surface structure and optical spectrum. The unique structural features, continuous metal coverage and smooth surface profile, can help obtain highly coherent plasmonic resonances that strongly depend on the structural parameters of nanostructured surfaces. It allows us to encode optical responses and information into a structural format on a variety of materials. We show experimentally…
Anisotropic nanostructured porous Pd films are fabricated using oblique angle deposition in vacuum on a glass substrate. They display a dichroic response, due to localised surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) within the nanoparticles forming the film, dependent on the incident light polarisation. Ultrasensitive hydrogen sensing is reached by using these films in conjunction with a differential optical technique derived from the reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy. The evolution of the samples optical responses is monitored during the formation of Pd hydride in both the dilute alpha-phase and the …
Plasmonics can be used to improve absorption in optoelectronic devices and has been intensively studied for solar cells and photodetectors. Graphene has recently emerged as a powerful plasmonic material. It shows significantly less losses compared to traditional plasmonic materials such as gold and silver and its plasmons can be tuned by changing the Fermi energy with chemical or electrical doping. Here we propose the usage of graphene plasmonics for light trapping in optoelectronic devices and show that the excitation of localized plasmons in doped, nanostructured graphene can enhance optical…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) attract significant attention due to their exceptional optical, excitonic, mechanical, and electronic properties. Nanostructured multilayer TMDs were recently shown to be highly promising for nanophotonic applications, as motivated by their exceptionally high refractive indexes and optical anisotropy. Here, we extend this vision to more sophisticated structures, such as periodic arrays of nanodisks and nanoholes, as well as proof-of-concept waveguides and resonators. We specifically focus on various advanced nanofabrication strategies, including careful …
We investigate surface modes in plasmonic Bragg fibers composed of nanostructured coaxial cylindrical metal-dielectric multilayers. We demonstrate that the existence of surface modes is determined by the sign of the spatially averaged permittivity of the plasmonic Bragg fiber, $\bar{% \varepsilon}$. Specifically, localized surface modes occur at the interface between the cylindrical core with $\bar{\varepsilon}<0$ and the outermost uniform dielectric medium, which is similar to the topologically protected plasmonic surface modes at the interface between two different one-dimensional planar met…
A plasmonic nanostructure conceived with periodic layers of a doped semiconductor and passive semiconductor is shown to generate spontaneously surface plasmon polaritons thanks to its periodic nature. The nanostructure is demonstrated to behave as an effective material modeled by a simple dielectric function of ionic-crystal type, and possesses a fully tunable photonic band gap, with widths exceeding 50%, in the region extending from mid-infra-red to Tera-Hertz.
We have investigated the plasmonic enhancement of the radiation field at various nanostructured multilayer devices, that may be applied in surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. We apply an image dipole method to describe the effect of surface morphology on the field enhancement in a quasistatic limit. In particular, we compare the performance of a nanostructured silver surface and a layered silver-gold hybrid device. It is found that localized surface plasmon states (LSP) provide a high field enhancement in silver-gold hybrid devices, where symmetry breaking due to surface-defects is a supporti…
We report the first experimental observation of trapped rainbow1 in graded metallic gratings2-4, designed to validate theoretical predictions for this new class of plasmonic structures. One-dimensional tapered gratings were fabricated and their surface dispersion properties tailored by varying the grating period and depth, whose dimensions were confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Reduced group velocities and the plasmonic bandgap were observed. Direct measurements on graded grating structures show that light of different wavelengths in the 500-700nm region is "trapped" at different positions…
We recently formulated the canonical boundary-value problem of propagation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves along the direction of periodicity of a one-dimensional photonic crystal. Here we present the general formulation of that canonical problem supporting the oblique propagation of SPP waves in the interface plane. The general dispersion equation has been obtained using the rigorous coupled-wave approach for the oblique propagation and numerically solved using the Muller's method. A periodicity in the wavenumbers of the SPP waves was observed. Furthermore, the regions of high losses…
Nanostructured plasmonic metal systems are known to enhance greatly variety of radiative and nonradiative optical processes, both linear and nonlinear, which are due to the interaction of an electron in a molecule or semiconductor with the enhanced local optical field of the surface plasmons. Principally different are numerous many-body phenomena that are due to the Coulomb interaction between charged particles: carriers (electrons and holes) and ions. These include carrier-carrier or carrier-ion scattering, energy and momentum transfer (including the drag effect), thermal equilibration, excit…
We demonstrate `deterministic' launching of propagative quantum surface-plasmon polaritons at freely chosen positions on gold plasmonic receptacles. This is achieved by using as plasmon launcher a near-field scanning optical source made of a diamond nanocrystal with two Nitrogen-Vacancy color-center occupancy. Our demonstration relies on leakage-radiation microscopy of a thin homogeneous gold film and on near-field optical microscopy of a nanostructured thick gold film. Our work paves the way to future fundamental studies and applications in quantum plasmonics that require an accurate position…
We demonstrate that unidirectional and backscattering immune propagation of terahertz optical waves can be achieved in a topological valley-Hall waveguide made of graphene nanohole plasmonic crystals. In order to gain deeper physical insights into these phenomena, the band diagram of graphene nanohole plamsonic crystals has been investigated and optimized. We found that a graphene plasmonic crystal with nanohole arrays belonging to the $C_{6v}$ symmetry group possesses gapless Dirac cones, which can be gapped out by introducing extra nanoholes such that the symmetry point group of the system i…
Colors observed in nature are very important to form our perception of an object as well as its design. The desire to reproduce vivid colors such as those found in birds, fishes, flowers and insects has driven extensive research into nanostructured surfaces. Structural colors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) have played an important role in this field due to its high spatial resolution. Creating vivid color reflecting surfaces is still a major challenge and could revolutionize low power consumption image displays. Here we combine diffraction and plasmonic effects to design bright and v…
We study topologically-protected four-wave mixing (FWM) interactions in a plasmonic metasurface consisting of a periodic array of nanoholes in a graphene sheet, which exhibits a wide topological bandgap at terahertz frequencies upon the breaking of time-reversal symmetry by a static magnetic field. We demonstrate that due to the significant nonlinearity enhancement and large lifetime of graphene plasmons in specific configurations, a net gain of FWM interaction of plasmonic edge states within the topological bandgap can be achieved with pump power of less than 10 nW. In particular, we find tha…
Plasmonic devices and circuits, bridging the gap between integrated photonic and microelectronic technology, are promising candidates to realize on-chip ultrawide-band and ultrahigh-speed information processing. Unfortunately, the wideband surface plasmon source, one of the most important core components of integrated plasmonic circuits, is still unavailable up to now. This has seriously restricted the practical applications of plasmonic circuits. Here, we report an ultrawide-band unidirectional surface plasmon polariton launcher with high launching efficiency ratio and large extinction ratio,…
A nanostructured chalcogenide-metal optical fiber is proposed. This hybrid nanofiber is embedded with a periodic array of triangular-shaped deep-subwavelength metallic nanowires set up in a bowtie configuration. Our simulations show that the proposed nanostructured fiber supports a guided collective plasmonic mode enabling both subwavelength field confinement and extreme nonlinear light- matter interactions, much larger than a bare chalcogenide nanowire of comparable diameter. This is all achieved with less than 3% by volume of metal content.
Light-matter momentum transfer in plasmonic materials is theoretically discussed in the framework of plasmonic pressure mechanism taking into account non-equilibrium electron dynamics and thermalization process. We show that our approach explains the experimentally observed relationship between the plasmon-related electromotive force and absorption and allows one to correctly predict the magnitude of the plasmon drag emf in flat metal films. We extend our theory to metal films with modulated profiles and show that the simple relationship between plasmonic energy and momentum transfer holds at …
We configure and analyze a nanostructured device that hybridizes grating modes and surface plasmon resonances. The model uses an effective index of refraction that considers the volume fraction of the involved materials, and the propagation depth of the plasmon through the structure. Our geometry is an extruded low-order diffraction grating made of dielectric nano-triangles. Surface plasmon resonances are excited at a metal/dielectric interface, which is separated from the analyte by a high-index dielectric layer. The optical performance of the refractometric sensor is highly competitive in se…
We present a concept for an ultra-thin solar fuel device with a nanostructured back contact. Using rigorous simulations we show that the nanostructuring significantly increases the absorption in the semiconductor, CuBi$_2$O$_4$ in this case, by 47\% (5.2~mAcm$^{-2}$) through the excitation of plasmonic modes. We are able to attribute the resonances in the device to metal-insulator-metal plasmons coupled to either localised surface plasmon resonances or surface plasmon polaritons. Rounding applied to the metallic corners leads to a blueshift in the resonance wavelength while maintaining absorpt…
Topologically protected plasmonic modes located inside topological bandgaps are attracting increasing attention, chiefly due to their robustness against disorder-induced backscattering. Here, we introduce a bilayer graphene metasurface that possesses plasmonic topological valley interface modes when the mirror symmetry of the metasurface is broken by horizontally shifting the lattice of holes of the top layer of the two freestanding graphene layers in opposite directions. In this configuration, light propagation along the domain-wall interface of the bilayer graphene metasurface shows unidirec…
It has recently been shown that holographically nanostructured surfaces can be employed to control the wavefront of (predominantly plasmonic) optical-frequency light emission generated by the injection of medium-energy electrons into a gold surface. Here we apply the concept to manipulation of the spatial distribution of transition radiation emission from high-refractive-index dielectric/semiconductor target materials, finding that concomitant incoherent luminescent emission at the same wavelength is unperturbed by holographic surface-relief structures, and thereby deriving a means of discrimi…
We study theoretically optical response of WS2 monolayer located near periodic metal nanostructured arrays in two and three dimensions. The emphasis of simulations is on the strong coupling regime of excitons supported by WS2 and surface plasmon-polaritons supported by various periodic plasmonic interfaces. It is demonstrated that a monolayer of WS2 placed in a close proximity of periodic arrays of either slits or holes results in a Rabi splitting of the corresponding surface plasmon-polariton resonance as revealed in calculated transmission and reflection spectra. The nonlinear regime, at whi…
Optoelectronic functionalities of photodection and light harnessing rely on the band-to-band excitation of semiconductors, thus the spectral response of the devices is dictated and limited by their bandgap. A novel approach, free from this restriction, is to harvest the energetic electrons generated by the relaxation of a plasmonic resonance in the vicinity of a metal-semiconductor junction. In this configuration, the optoelectronic and spectral response of the detectors can be designed ad hoc just by tailoring the topology of metal structures, which has tremendous applications in solar energy…
The intrinsic optical properties and peculiarities of the energy structure of hafnium dioxide largely determine the prospects for applying the latter in new generation devices of optoelectronics and nanoelectronics. In this work, we have studied the diffuse reflectance spectra at room temperature for a nominally pure nanostructured $HfO_2$ powder with a monoclinic crystal structure and, as well its photoluminescence in the temperature range of 40 - 300 K. We have also estimated the bandgap $E_g$ under the assumption made for indirect (5.31 eV) and direct (5.61 eV) allowed transitions. We have …
Uncovering the complex mechanisms behind nanomaterials-based plasmon-driven photocatalysis through the utilization of Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopies
Recent metamaterial (MM) research faces several problems when using metal-based plasmonic components as building blocks for MMs. The use of conventional metals for MMs is limited by several factors: metals such as gold and silver have high losses in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) ranges and very large negative real permittivity values, and in addition, their optical properties cannot be tuned. These issues that put severe constraints on the device applications of MMs could be overcome if semiconductors are used as plasmonic materials instead of metals. Heavily doped, wide bandgap oxide se…
Plasmonic materials and metamaterials have been widely utilized to achieve spectral transmission, reflection and absorption filters based on localized or delocalized resonances arising from the interaction of photons with nanostructured materials. Realization of visible-frequency, high-performance, large-area, optical filters based on nanoplasmonic materials is rather challenging due to nanofabrication related problems (cost, fabrication imperfection, surface roughness) and optical losses of metals. Here, we propose and demonstrate large-area perfect absorbers and transmission filters that ove…
Serving as a new two-dimensional plasmonic material, graphene has stimulated an intensive study of its optical properties which benefit from the unique electronic band structure of the underlying honeycomb lattice of carbon atoms. In classical electrodynamics, nanostructured graphene is commonly modeled by the computationally demanding problem of a three-dimensional conducting film of atomic-scale thickness. Here, we propose an efficient alternative two-dimensional electrostatic approach where all the calculation procedures are restricted to the plane of the graphene sheet. To explore possible…
Manipulating the spontaneous emission of a fluorescent emitter can be achieved by placing the emitter in a nanostructured environment. A privileged spot is occupied by plasmonic structures that provide a strong confinement of the electromagnetic field, which results in an enhancement of the emitter-environment interaction. While plasmonic nanostructures have been widely exploited to control the emission properties of single photon emitters, performing the coupling between quantum emitters with plasmons poses a huge challenge. In this Letter we report on a first crucial step towards this goal b…
We propose a composite layered structure for tunable, low-loss plasmon resonances, which con- sists of a noble-metal thin film coated in graphene and supported on a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate. We calculate electron energy loss spectra (EELS) for these structures, and nu- merically demonstrate that bulk plasmon losses in noble-metal films can be significantly reduced, and surface coupling enhanced, through the addition of a graphene coating and the wide-bandgap hBN substrate. Silver films with a trilayer graphene coating and hBN substrate demonstrated sur- face plasmon-dominant spe…
We develop an approach to use nanostructured plasmonic materials as a non-magnetic negative-refractive index system at optical and near-infrared frequencies. In contrast to conventional negative refraction materials, our design does not require periodicity and thus is highly tolerant to fabrication defects. Moreover, since the proposed materials are intrinsically non-magnetic, their performance is not limited to proximity of a resonance so that the resulting structure has relatively low loss. We develop the analytical description of the relevant electromagnetic phenomena and justify our analyt…
We have analyzed analytically the Faraday rotation of an electromagnetic wave for magnetoactive thin metallic film with a nanostructured surface profile. Periodical as well as random surface profiles were considered. The plasmon contribution to the Faraday angle was studied. For periodical grating case, we have shown that the maximum of rotation angle is achieved when surface plasmon wave number coincides with one of the wave numbers of the inverse lattice. Enhancement of the Faraday angle at plasmonic band edges is predicted. In the case of random surface profile, it is shown that the diffusi…
Photoluminescence (PL) features of nanostructured h-BN powder are studied in the range of 200-600 nm in millisecond time window. It is found that four PL excitation bands of 4.58, 5.01, 5.29, and 5.77 eV are characteristic of the spectral region at hand. It is shown that the PL emission spectra can be quantitatively described through a superposition of three Gaussian-shaped peaks: 2.6, 3.1, and 3.7 eV. The observable luminescence is established to be due to recombination processes involving centers whose energy levels in the bandgap are formed by oxygen and carbon impurities, as well as nitrog…
A rigorous formulation of the canonical boundary-value problem is presented to find the surface plasmon-polariton waves guided by the interface of a one-dimensional photonic crystal and metal along the direction of the periodicity. The problem is formulated using the rigorous coupled-wave approach and a dispersion equation has been obtained. The Muller's method and Newton--Raphson method were used to obtain illustrative numerical results of the dispersion equation. The solutions were found to converge as the number of Floquet harmonics increased. This formulation does not require the computati…

Plasmons in nanostructured metals are widely utilized to trigger strong light--matter interactions with quantum light sources. While the nonclassical behavior of such quantum emitters (QEs) is well-understood in this context, the role of quantum and surface effects in the plasmonic resonator is usually neglected. Here, we combine the Green's tensor approach with the Feibelman $d$-parameter formalism to theoretically explore the influence of quantum surface effects in metal-dielectric layered nanostructures on the relaxation dynamics of a proximal two-level QE. Having identified electron spill-…
