It is shown that the interaction of a plasma with thermal radiation leads to the stabilization of both periodic and solitary nonlinear plasma waves. The stabilized periodic nonlinear plasma waves were indeed observed in the experiment carried out by Looney and Brown. There are many branches of radiation-induced solitary waves in plasmas, corresponding in particular to the density waves in hot plasmas of accretion disks.
In this paper we propose a vertical stabilization~(VS) control system for tokamak plasmas based on the extremum seeking (ES) algorithm. The gist of the proposed strategy is to inject an oscillating term in the control action and exploit a modified ES algorithm in order to bring to zero the average motion of the plasma along the unstable mode. In this way, the stabilization of the unstable vertical dynamic of the plasma is achieved. The approach is validated by means of both linear and nonlinear simulations of the overall~ITER tokamak magnetic control system, with the aim of demonstrating robus…
Toroidal flow alone is generally thought to have important influence on tokamak edge pedestal stability, even though theory analysis often predicts merely a weak stabilizing effect of toroidal flow on the edge localized modes (ELMs) in experimental parameter regimes. For the first time, we find from two-fluid MHD calculations that such a stabilization, however, can be significantly enhanced by increasing the edge plasma density. Our finding resolves a long-standing mystery whether or how toroidal rotation can indeed have effective influence on ELMs, and explains why the ELM mitigation and supp…
The previous study regarding the stabilization of a magnetized constant temperature plasma by shear flow with vorticity is extended to a plasma of non-constant temperature, where in the presence of heat source or sinks the thermomagnetic Nernst effect becomes important. Of special interest is what this effect has on the stabilization of a linear z-pinch discharge for which exact solutions are given. Solutions which are unstable for subsonic shear flow become stable if the flow is supersonic.
A new mechanism for pressure profile relaxations in an edge tokamak plasma is derived from simulations within the two-fluid three-dimensional turbulence code EMEDGE3D. The relaxation is due to diamagnetic coupling in the resistive ballooning/drift wave dynamics: unstable modes experience explosive growth at high pressure gradients after a phase in which they are stabilized by the diamagnetic coupling leading to the onset of a transport barrier. The sheared $E\times B$ flow does not play any significant role. After relaxation the transport barrier forms again and it sets the conditions for a no…
Exact solutions of a magnetized plasma in a vorticity containing shear flow for constant temperature are presented. This is followed by the modification of these solutions by thermomagnetic currents in the presence of temperature gradients. It is shown that solutions which are unstable for a subsonic flow, are stable if the flow is supersonic. The results are applied to the problem of vorticity shear flow stabilization of a linear z-pinch discharge.
The stabilization of ``rigid'' flute and ballooning modes $m = 1$ in an axisymmetric mirror trap with the help of an ideally conducting lateral both in the presence and in the absence of end MHD anchors is studied. The calculations were performed for an anisotropic plasma in a model that simulates the pressure distribution during the injection of beams of fast neutral atoms into the magnetic field minimum at a right angle to the trap axis. It was assumed that the lateral wall has the shape of a cylinder with a variable radius, so that on an enlarged scale it repeats the shape of the plasma col…
From the development of the electron theory by H. A. Lorentz in 1906, many authors have tried to reformulate this model. P. A. M. Dirac derived the relativistic-classical electron model in 1938, which is now called the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac model. But this model has the big difficulty of the run-away solution. Recently, this equation has become important for ultra-intense laser-electron (plasma) interactions. For simulations in this research field, it is desirable to stabilize this model of the radiation reaction. In this paper, we will discuss this ability for radiation reaction with the incl…
The aim of the present study is to perform a theoretical analysis of different strategies to stabilize energetic-ion-driven resistive interchange mode (EIC) in LHD plasma. We use a reduced MHD for the thermal plasma coupled with a gyrofluid model for the energetic particles (EP) species. The hellically trapped EP component is introduced through a modification of the drift frequency to include their precessional drift. The stabilization trends of the 1/1 EIC observed experimentally with respect to the thermal plasma density and temperature are reproduced by the simulations, showing a reasonable…
Modern Tokamaks have evolved from the initial axisymmetric circular plasma shape to an elongated axisymmetric plasma shape that improves the energy confinement time and the triple product, which is a generally used figure of merit for the conditions needed for fusion reactor performance. However, the elongated plasma cross section introduces a vertical instability that demands a real-time feedback control loop to stabilize the plasma vertical position and velocity. At the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV) in-vessel poloidal field coils driven by fast switching power supplies are used to s…
The paper presents a review of dynamic stabilization mechanisms for plasma instabilities. One of the dynamic stabilization mechanisms for plasma instability was proposed in the papers [Phys. Plasmas 19, 024503(2012) and references therein], based on a perturbation phase control. In general, instabilities emerge from the perturbations of the physical quantity. Normally the perturbation phase is unknown so that the instability growth rate is discussed. However, if the perturbation phase is known, the instability growth can be controlled by a superimposition of perturbations imposed actively: if …

The electromagnetic theory of the strongly driven ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) instability in magnetically confined toroidal plasmas is developed. Stabilizing and destabilizing effects are identified, and a critical $β_{e}$ (the ratio of the electron to magnetic pressure) for stabilization of the toroidal branch of the mode is calculated for magnetic equilibria independent of the coordinate along the magnetic field. Its scaling is $β_{e}\sim L_{Te}/R,$ where $L_{Te}$ is the characteristic electron temperature gradient length, and $R$ the major radius of the torus. We conjecture that a fast p…
Laser-plasma accelerators outperform current radiofrequency technology in acceleration strength by orders of magnitude. Yet, enabling them to deliver competitive beam quality for demanding applications, particularly in terms of energy spread and stability, remains a major challenge. In this Letter, we propose to combine bunch decompression and active plasma dechirping for drastically improving the energy profile and stability of beams from laser-plasma accelerators. Realistic start-to-end simulations demonstrate the potential of these post-acceleration phase-space manipulations for simultaneou…

A classical model of radiation reaction for the betatron oscillation of an electron in a plasma wakefield accelerator is presented. The maximum energy of the electron due to the longitudinal radiation reaction is found, and the betatron oscillation damping due to both the longitudinal and transverse radiation reaction effects is analyzed. Both theoretical and numerical solutions are shown with good agreements. The regime that the quantum radiation takes effect is also discussed. This model is important for designing future plasma based super accelerators or colliders.
Recently, magnetic reconnection, where a relativistically hot plasma is confined by a strong magnetic field, has received great attention in relation to astrophysical objects (e.g., pulsar magnetosphere and magnetar). However, reconnection with relativistic high-speed drift current in the plasma sheet has not been investigated yet. Thus, from both the theoretical and computational points of view, we studied the growth rate of relativistic reconnection for the high-speed drift current in a relativistically hot plasma sheet. Consequently, we argue that, contrary to the conventional understanding…
On the base of the quantum kinetic equation for density matrix in plasma at the stimulated bremsstrahlung of electrons on ions, the nonlinear absorption rate for high-intensity shortwave radiation in plasma has been obtained within relativistic quantum theory. Both classical Maxwellian and degenerate quantum plasma are considered for x-ray lasers of high intensities. Essentially different dependences of nonlinear absorption rate on polarization of strong laser radiation is stated.
We have extended our study of the competition between the drive and stabilization of plasma microinstabilities by sheared flow to include electromagnetic effects at low plasma $β$ (the ratio of plasma to magnetic pressure). The extended system of characteristic equations is formulated, for a dissipative fluid model developed from the gyrokinetic equation, using a twisting mode representation in sheared slab geometry and focusing on the ion temperature gradient mode. Perpendicular flow shear convects perturbations along the field at the speed we denote as $Mc_s$ (where $c_s$ is the sound speed)…
One-dimensional steady-state plasma-field structures in overdense plasma are studied assuming that the electron temperature is uniform over plasma bulk and the ions are stationary. It is shown that there may exist solutions for electron distributions with cavitation regions in plasma under the action of ponderomotive force
The new statistical approach for calculation of radiation processes with heavy multielectron ions in plasma is developed. The method consists in consideration of atomic structure as a condensed medium, characterized by the spectrum of elementary excitations with plasma frequency, determined by local atomic electron density. For instance, the radiation losses in this model are due to excitation of plasma type oscillations in atom under its collisions with plasma electrons and have a universal statistical representation for all sorts of multielectron ions. The calculations of radiation losses on…
The problem of radio wave reflection from an optically thick plane monotonous layer of magnetized plasma is considered at present work. The plasma electron density irregularities are described by spatial spectrum of an arbitrary form. The small-angle scattering approximation in the invariant ray coordinates is suggested for analytical investigation of the radiation transfer equation. The approximated solution describing spatial-and-angular distribution of radiation reflected from a plasma layer is obtained. The obtained solution can be applied, for example, to the ionospheric radio wave propag…
{A simple electrodynamic model is developed to define plasma-field structures in self-consistent ultra-relativistic laser-plasma interactions when the radiation reaction effects come into play. An exact analysis of a circularly polarized laser interacting with plasmas is presented. We define fundamental notations such as nonlinear dielectric permittivity, ponderomotive and dissipative forces acting in a plasma. Plasma-field structures arising during the ultra-relativisitc interactions are also calculated. Based on these solutions we show that about 50% of laser energy can be converted into gam…
Radiation spectrum of extreme relativistic electrons and a probability of electron-positron pair production by energetic photons in a strong plasma wakefield are derived in the framework of a semiclassical approach. It is shown that that the radiation losses of the relativistic electron in the plasma wakefield scale as $ \propto ε^{2 / 3}$ in the quantum limit when the energy of the radiated photon becomes close to the electron energy, $ε$. The quantum effects will play a key role in future plasma-based accelerators operating at ultrahigh energy of the electrons.
We consider the reflection of relativistically strong radiation from plasma and identify the physical origin of the electrons' tendency to form a thin sheet, which maintains its localisation throughout its motion. Thereby we justify the principle of the relativistic electronic spring (RES) proposed in [A. Gonoskov et al. PRE 84, 046403 (2011)]. Using the RES principle we derive a closed set of differential equations that describe the reflection of radiation with arbitrary variation of polarization and intensity from plasma with arbitrary density profile for arbitrary angle of incidence. PIC si…
It is found that nonlinear interaction of plasma wakefields driven by counterpropagating laser or particle beams can efficiently generate high-power electromagnetic radiation at the second harmonic of the plasma frequency. Using a simple analytical theory and particle-in-cell simulations, we show that this phenomenon can be attractive for producing high-field ($\sim 10$ MV/cm) narrowband terahertz pulses with the gigawatt power level and millijoule energy content.
The recent progress in high-temperature superconductor technologies has led to the design and construction of SPARC, a compact tokamak device expected to reach plasma breakeven with up to $25$MW of external ion cyclotron resonant heating (ICRH) power. This manuscript presents local (flux-tube) and radially global gyrokinetic GENE (Jenko et al 2000 Phys. Plasmas {\bf 7} 1904) simulations for a reduced-field and current H-mode SPARC scenario showing that supra-thermal particles - generated via ICRH - strongly suppress ion-scale turbulent transport by triggering a fast ion-induced anomalous trans…
Laser plasma acceleration at kilohertz repetition rate has recently been shown to work in two different regimes, with pulse lengths of either 30 fs or 3.5 fs. We now report on a systematic study in which a large range of pulse durations and plasma densities were investigated through continuous tuning of the laser spectral bandwidth. Indeed, two LPA processes can be distinguished, where beams of the highest quality, with 5.4 pC charge and a spectrum peaked at 2-2.5 MeV are obtained with short pulses propagating in moderate plasma densities. Through Particle-in-Cell simulations the two different…
An intense, short laser pulse propagating across a plasma boundary ponderomotively drives THz radiation. Full format PIC simulations and theoretical analysis are conducted to investigate the properties of this radiation. Simulation results show the THz emission originates in regions of varying density and covers a broad spectrum with maximum frequency close to the maximum plasma frequency. In the case of a sharp vacuum-plasma boundary, the radiation is generated symmetrically at the plasma entrance and exit, and its properties are independent of plasma density when the density exceeds a charac…
Stimulated Raman scattering of an ultra-intense laser pulse in plasmas is studied by perturbatively including the leading order term of the Landau-Lifshitz radiation reaction force in the equation of motion for plasma electrons. In this approximation, radiation reaction force causes phase shift in nonlinear current densities that drive the two Raman sidebands (anti-Stokes and Stokes waves), manifesting itself into the nonlinear mixing of two sidebands. This mixing results in a strong enhancement in the growth of the forward Raman scattering instability.
Backward terahertz radiation can be produced by a high-intensity laser normally incident upon an underdense plasma. It is found that terahertz radiation is generated by electrons refluxing along the bubble shell. These shell electrons have similar dynamic trajectories and emit backward radiations to vacuum. This scheme has been proved through electron dynamic calculations as well as by using an ionic sphere model. In addition, the bubble shape is found to influence the radiation frequency, and this scheme can be implemented in both uniform and up-ramp density gradient plasma targets. The terah…
Magnetized high-energy-density plasmas can often have strong electromagnetic fluctuations whose correlation scale is smaller than the electron Larmor radius. Radiation from the electrons in such plasmas, which markedly differs from both synchrotron and cyclotron radiation, and their energy and pitch-angle diffusion are tightly related. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical and numerical study of the particles' transport in both cold, "small-scale" Langmuir and Whistler-mode turbulence and its relation to the spectra of radiation simultaneously produced by these particles. We em…

We study the penetration of ultraintense circularly polarized laser pulses into a thick subcritical plasma layer with accounting for radiation friction. We show that radiation pressure is enhanced by radiation friction in the direction transverse to the laser pulse propagation, and that for stronger and longer laser pulses this mechanism dominates over the ordinary ponderomotive pressure, thus resulting in a stronger charge separation than anticipated previously. We give estimates of the effect and compare them with the results of 1D and 2D PIC simulations.
Plasma dipole oscillation (PDO) depicted as harmonic motion of a spatially localized block of electrons has, until now, been hypothetical. In practice, the plasma oscillation occurs always as a part of a plasma wave. Studies on radiation burst from plasmas have focused only on coupling of the plasma wave and electromagnetic wave. Here we show that a very-high-field PDO can be generated by the electrons trapped in a moving train of potential wells. The electrons riding on the potential train coherently construct a local dipole moment by charge separation. The subsequent PDO is found to persist …
Plasmas created by high-intensity lasers are often subject to the formation of kinetic-streaming instabilities, such as the Weibel instability, which lead to the spontaneous generation of high-amplitude, tangled magnetic fields. These fields typically exist on small spatial scales, i.e. "sub-Larmor scales". Radiation from charged particles moving through small-scale electromagnetic (EM) turbulence has spectral characteristics distinct from both synchrotron and cyclotron radiation, and it carries valuable information on the statistical properties of the EM field structure and evolution. Consequ…
It is shown that under the definite regime of interaction of the acoustic waves with low-temperature, partially ionized plasma it is possible to change the intensity of some spectral lines of atomic argon. It is shown also, that the dependence of the intensities of these spectral lines on the intensity of the acoustic wave has a hysteresis behavior.
Using multi-dimensional PIC simulations we show that the magnetic undulator-type field of the plasma magnetostatic mode is indeed produced by the interaction of a laser pulse with a relativistic ionization front, as predicted by linear theory for a cold plasma. When the front with this magnetostatic mode is followed by a relativistic electron beam, the interaction of the beam with this magnetic field, produces FEL-type synchrotron radiation, providing a direct signature of the magnetostatic mode. The possibility of generating readily detectable ultrashort wavelength radiation using this mode, …
A highly intense femtosecond laser pulse incident on a plasma target of supercritical density, gives rise to reflected high-order harmonics of the laser frequency. The radiation model adopted here considers Brunel electrons -those reinjected into the plasma after performing a vacuum excursion-perturbed by a localized turbulent region of an electrostatic field that is generated during the interaction, and characterized by a soliton-like structure. The observed power spectrum is characterized by a power-law decay scaled as P_m ~ m^{-p}, here m denotes the harmonic order. In this work an appeal i…
Plasma Surface Interaction(PSI) effects on plasma burn-through are compared for the carbon wall and the ITER-Like Wall(ILW) at JET. For the carbon wall, the radiation barrier and C2+ influx have a significant linear correlation whereas the radiation barrier in the ILW does not have such a linear correlation with Be 1+ influx. The JET data are explained by the simulation results of the DYON code. The radiation barrier in the carbon wall JET is dominated by the carbon radiation, but the radiation barrier in the ILW is mainly from the deuterium radiation rather than the beryllium radiation.
We consider contribution of the radiation damping in the quantum hydrodynamic equations for spinless particles. We discuss possibility of obtaining of corresponding non-linear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) for the macroscopic wave function. We compare contribution of the radiation damping with weakly (or semi-) relativistic effects appearing in the second order by v/c. The radiation damping appears in the third order by v/c. So it might be smaller than weakly relativistic effects, but it gives damping of the Langmuir waves which can be considerable.
When propagating inside dielectrics, an ultrafast Bessel beam creates a high aspect-ratio cylinder of plasma with nanometric diameter that extends over several tens of micrometers to centimeters. We analyze the interaction between the intense ultrafast laser pulse and the plasma rod using particle-in-cell simulations. We show that electrons are heated and accelerated up to keV energies via transit acceleration inside the resonance lobes in the vicinity of the critical surface and compute their radiation pattern.
Bremsstrahlung radiation emission is an important energy loss mechanism for energetic electrons in plasmas. In this paper we investigate the effect of spontaneous bremsstrahlung emission on the momentum-space structure of the electron distribution, fully accounting for the emission of finite-energy photons. We find that electrons accelerated by electric fields can reach significantly higher energies than what is expected from energy-loss considerations. Furthermore, we show that the emission of soft photons can contribute significantly to the dynamics of electrons with an anisotropic distribut…
It is shown, by simulation and theory, that circularly or elliptically polarized terahertz radiation can be generated when a static magnetic (B) field is imposed on a gas target along the propagation direction of a two-color laser driver. The radiation frequency is determined by $\sqrt{ω_p^2+{ω_c^2}/{4}} + {ω_c}/{2}$, where $ω_p$ is the plasma frequency and $ω_c$ is the electron cyclotron frequency. With the increase of the B field, the radiation changes from a single-cycle broadband waveform to a continuous narrow-band emission. In high-B-field cases, the radiation strength is proportional to…
Bremsstrahlung radiation is an important energy loss mechanism for energetic electrons in plasmas. In this paper we investigate the effect of bremsstrahlung radiation reaction on the electron distribution in 2D momentum space. We show that the emission of bremsstrahlung radiation leads to non-monotonic features in the electron distribution function and describe how the simultaneous inclusion of synchrotron and bremsstrahlung radiation losses affects the dynamics of fast electrons. We give quantitative expressions for (1) the maximum electron energy attainable in the presence of bremsstrahlung …
A kinetic theory for radiation interacting with sound waves in an ultrarelativistic electron-positron plasma is developed. It is shown that the effect of a spatial spectral broadening of the electromagnetic pulse is to introduce a reduction of the growth rates for the decay and modulational instabilities. Such spectral broadening could be due to a finite pulse coherence length, or through the use of random phase filters, and would stabilize the propagation of electromagnetic pulses.
The behaviour of a collisional plasma which is optically thin to cyclotron radiation is considered, and the distribution functions accessible to it on the various timescales in the system are calculated. Particular attention is paid to the limit in which the collision time exceeds the radiation emission time, making the electron distribution function strongly anisotropic. Unusually for plasma physics, the collision operator can nevertheless be calculated analytically although the plasma is far from Maxwellian. The rate of radiation emission is calculated and found to be governed by the collisi…
Numerical simulations of laser-plasma interactions demonstrate the generation of axially polarized electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) that radiate away energy with a characteristic frequency determined by the plasma frequency, in the THz range for typical laser wakefield acceleration experiments. This is confirmed by full 2D electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations, as well as by a ponderomotively-driven reduced model that captures the EMP generation essentials. When the laser's pulse length matches the plasma wavelength, that pulse's fractional energy losses to the wakefield are independent of…
Plasma high harmonics generation from an extremely intense short-pulse laser is explored by including the effects of ion motion, electron-ion collisions and radiation reaction force in the plasma dynamics. The laser radiation pressure induces plasma ion motion through the hole-boring effect resulting into the frequency shifting and widening of the harmonic spectra. Classical radiation reaction force slightly mitigates the frequency broadening caused by the ion motion. Based on the results and physical considerations, parameter maps highlighting optimum regions for generating a single intense a…
According to the standard scenario of plasma emission, escaping radiations are generated by the nonlinear development of the kinetic bump-on-tail instability driven by a single beam of energetic electrons interacting with plasmas. Here we conduct fully-kinetic electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations to investigate plasma emission induced by the ring-distributed energetic electrons interacting with overdense plasmas. Efficient excitations of the fundamental (F) and harmonic (H) emissions are revealed with radiation mechanism(s) different from the standard scenario: (1) The primary modes ac…
Terahertz (THz) radiation by beating of two laser beams in a groove density and magnetized hot plasma is discussed theoretically. In this mechanism, the ponderomotive force leads to a nonlinear oscillatory current that resonantly excites THz radiation at the frequency upper hybrid. It is interesting to find that the maximum THz radiation in the various electron temperature, therefore, exited an optimum temperature for the parameters such as beating frequency, transverse distance from lasers beam center and strength of the static magnetic field that THz radiation can be maximized.
Terahertz (THz) emission by two-color, ultrashort optical pulses interacting with underdense helium gases at ultrahigh intensities ($> 10^{19}\,\mathrm{W/cm}^2$) is investigated by means of 3D particle-in-cell simulations. The THz field is shown to be produced by two mechanisms occurring sequentially, namely, photoionization-induced radiation (PIR) by the two-color pulse and coherent transition radiation (CTR) by the wakefield-accelerated electrons escaping the plasma. For plasmas of atomic densities $> 10^{17}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, CTR proves to be the dominant process, providing THz bursts wit…
Laser wakefield accelerators have great potential as the basis for next generation compact radiation sources because their accelerating gradients are three orders of magnitude larger than traditional accelerators. However, X-ray radiation from such devices still lacks of tunability, especially the intensity and polarization distribution. Here we propose a tunable polarized radiation source from a helical plasma undulator based on plasma channel guided wakefield accelerator. When a laser pulse is initially incident with a skew angle relative to the channel axis, the laser and accelerated electr…
