We describe first results obtained with a track structure imaging system for measuring the ionisation topology of charged particles in a low-pressure gas. The detection method is based on a time projection chamber (TPC) filled with low-pressure triethylamine (TEA). Images of ionisation tracks of electrons, protons, and heavier ions are presented and analysed.
The IDEA detector concept for a future e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ collider adopts an ultra-low mass drift chamber as a central tracking system. The He-based ultra-low mass drift chamber is designed to provide efficient tracking, a high-precision momentum measurement, and excellent particle identification by exploiting the cluster counting technique. This paper describes the expected tracking performance, obtained with full and fast simulation, for track reconstruction on detailed simulated physics events. In this paper we present the cryogenic functionality of the components of data links for the Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC), a potential far site detector technology of the Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE). We have confirmed that an LVDS driver can drive a 20-meter CAT5E twisted pair up to 1 gigabit per second at the liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K). We have verified that a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) serializer, a laser diode driver, laser diodes, optical fibers and connectors, and field-programming gate arrays (FPGA's) continue to function at 77 K. A variety of C…
We report about a nuclear track imaging system which is designed to study in detail the ionization topology of charged particle tracks in a low-pressure gas. The detection method is based on a time projection chamber (TPC) filled with low-pressure triethylamine (TEA). Ionization electrons produced by energetic charged particles are three-dimensionally imaged by recording light from electron avalanches with an intensified CCD system. The detector permits to inves-tigate the spatial ionization distributions of particle tracks in gas, of equivalent length and resolution in tissue of 4 mm and 40 n…
The software of track reconstruction of the vertex chamber of BESII-VCJULI was studied when it was transplanted from the HP-Unix platform to PC-Linux. The problems of distinct dictionary storage and precision treatment in these two different platforms were found and settled in the modified software. Then the obvious differences of the candidate track number in an event and some track parameters caused by them were reduced from 74% to 0.02% and from 5% to 0.5%, respectively. As a result, the quality of the track finding was greatly improved and the CPU time saved.
At present time Budker INP is developing a Super Charm-Tau factory project, which consists of a high-luminosity collider with the luminosity of $10^{35}$,cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ and a universal magnetic detector. The tracking system of the detector will comprise of an Inner Tracker (IT) and a Drift Chamber (DC). One of the options for IT is Time Projection Chamber (TPC). The advantages of the TPC are high spatial resolution and particle identification capabilities by registration of dE/dx losses. However, using a Time Projection Chamber implies serious challenges. For example, the TPC have to simult…

In this article we describe the development of machine learning models to assist the CLAS12 tracking algorithm by identifying tracks through inferring missing segments in the drift chambers. Auto encoders are used to reconstruct missing segments from track trajectory. Implemented neural network was able to reliably reconstruct missing segment positions with accuracy of $\approx 0.35$ wires, and lead to recovery of missing tracks with accuracy of $>99.8\%$.
The aim of this thesis was to perform the drift chamber calibration and charged particles 3d track reconstruction for the P349 antiproton polarization experiment. A dedicated procedures were designed, implemented and tested on the experimental data for the the D1 drift chamber. The calibration consisted of the drift time offsets determination, estimation of the initial drift time - space relations by means of the homogeneous irradiation method and the iterative procedure for the time - space relations optimization. Calibration curves for all wire planes of the detector were determined. The obt…
We develop and validate a new algorithm called \textit{primary track recovery} (\ptr) that effectively deconvolves known physics and detector effects from nuclear recoil tracks in gas time projection chambers (TPCs) with high-resolution readout. This gives access to the primary track charge, length, and vector direction (helping to resolve the "head-tail" ambiguity). Additionally, \ptr provides a measurement of the transverse and longitudinal diffusion widths, which can be used to determine the absolute position of tracks in the drift direction for detector fiducialization. Using simulated hel…
Large volume Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LAr-TPC) are used and proposed for neutrino physics and rare event search. Most of these detectors make use of the scintillation light of liquid argon for trigger purposes. Two different approaches can be adopted to provide these detectors with an effective trigger system, relying upon analog or digital processing of signal coming from photodetectors, like photomultiplier tubes or silicon photomultipliers. Each method presents advantages and drawbacks, so the implementation of a hybrid solution can benefit from both approaches. To this purpos…

Each channel of the 4-channel prototype is composed of two 16-bit Time-to-Digital Converters (TDCs), one 8-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), a front-end preamplifier and shaper, plus digital and analog buffers that support a variety of digitization chains. The prototype has a multiplexed digital backend that executes a state machine, distributes control and timing signals, and buffers data for serial output. Laboratory bench tests measur…
A new design of highly granular hadronic calorimeter using Glass Resistive Plate Chambers (GRPCs) with embedded electronics has been proposed for the future International Linear Collider (ILC) experiments. It features a 2-bit threshold semi-digital read-out. Several GRPC prototypes with their electronics have been successfully built and tested in pion beams. The design of these detectors is presented along with the test results on efficiency, pad multiplicity, stability and reproducibility.
The Particle Flow Analysis approach retained for the future ILC detectors requires high granularity and compact particle energy deposition. A Glass Resistive Plate Chamber based Semi-Digital calorimeter can offer both at a low price for the hadronic section. This paper presents some recent developments and results near test beam in the use of Glass Resistive Plate Chamber with embedded front-end electronics to build a prototype based on this principle. All the critical parameters such as the spatial and angular uniformity of the response as well as the noise level have been measured on small c…
In this work, we present a new approach for fast tracking on multiwire proportional chambers with neural networks. The tracking networks are developed and adapted for the first-level trigger at hadron collider experiments. We use Monte Carlo samples generated by Geant4 with a custom muon chamber, which resembles part of the thin gap chambers from the ATLAS experiment, for training and performance evaluations. The chamber has a total of seven gas gaps, where the first and last gas gaps are displaced by ~1.5 m. Each gas gap has 50 channels with a size of 18-20 mm. Two neural network models are d…
Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) with charge readout via micro pattern gaseous detectors can provide detailed measurements of charge density distributions. We here report on measurements of alpha particle tracks, using a TPC where the drift charge is amplified with Gas Electron Multipliers and detected with a pixel ASIC. We find that by measuring the 3-D topology of drift charge and fitting for its transverse diffusion, we obtain the absolute position of tracks in the drift direction. For example, we obtain a precision of 1~cm for 1~cm-long alpha track segments. To our knowledge this is the fir…
The GPU-accelerated track finding method is investigated to track electrons from neutrinoless muon decay in the COMET Phase-I experiment. Inside the cylindrical drift chamber, one third of the signal electron trajectories are composed of multiple turns where the correct hit assignments to each turn partition are significant in the track finding. Scanning all possible track seeds of position and momentum can resolve the hit-to-turn assignment problem with a high robustness, but requires a huge computational cost: The initial track seeds $(θ,z,p_x,p_y,p_z)$ have broad uncertainties, so there exi…
We report photoelectron track length distributions between 3 and 8 keV in gas mixtures of Ne+CO2+CH3NO2 (260:80:10 Torr) and CO2+CH3NO2 (197.5: 15 Torr). The measurements were made using a negative ion time projection chamber (NITPC) at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). We report the first quantitative analysis of photoelectron track length distributions in a gas. The distribution of track lengths at a given energy is best fit by a lognormal distribution. A powerlaw distribution of the form, f(E)=a(E/Eo)n, is found to fit the relationship…
Wire chambers are routinely operated as tracking detectors in magnetic spectrometers at high-intensity continuous electron beams. Especially in experiments studying reactions with small cross-sections the reaction yield is limited by the background rate in the chambers. One way to determine the track of a charged particle through a multi-wire proportional chamber (MWPC) is the measurement of the charge distribution induced on its cathodes. In practical applications of this read-out method, the algorithm to relate the measured charge distribution to the avalanche position is an important factor…
The India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) collaboration, as part of its detector R\&D program, has developed prototype stacks of resistive plate chambers (RPCs) to study their performance. These stacks have also been used as testbenches for the development of related hardware and software. A crucial parameter in the characterisation of these detectors and other physics studies is the detection efficiency, which is estimated from track fitting of cosmic muons passing through the stack. So far, a simple straight line fit was used for track fitting, which was sensitive to noise hits and led to r…
The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) is a general-purpose experimental apparatus with an inner tracking detector for measuring charged particles, surrounded by a calorimeter for measurements of electromagnetic and hadronic showers, and a muon detector system. We present a technique for, and results of, a precise relative alignment of the drift chamber wires of the CDF tracker. This alignment has been an important component of the track momentum calibration, which is the basis for the charged-lepton calibration for the measurement of the W boson mass at CDF.
Low radioactive material screening is becoming essential for rare event search experiments, such as neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter searches in underground laboratories. A gaseous time projection chamber (TPC) can be used for such purposes with large active areas and high efficiency. A gaseous TPC with a Micromegas readout plane of approximately 20$\times$20 cm$^2$ is successfully constructed for surface alpha contamination measurements. We have characterized the energy resolution, gain stability, and tracking capability with calibration sources. With the unique track-related ba…
In this article, we present the results of using Convolutional Auto-Encoders for de-noising raw data for CLAS12 drift chambers. The de-noising neural network provides increased efficiency in track reconstruction and also improved performance for high luminosity experimental data collection. The de-noising neural network used in conjunction with the previously developed track classifier neural network \cite{Gavalian:2022hfa} lead to a significant track reconstruction efficiency increase for current luminosity ($0.6\times10^{35}~cm^{-2}~sec^{-1}$ ). The increase in experimentally measured quanti…
The tracking system of the dielectron spectrometer HADES at GSI Darmstadt is formed out of 24 low-mass, trapezoidal multi-layer drift chambers providing in total about 30 square meter of active area. Low multiple scattering in the in total four planes of drift chambers before and after the magnetic field is ensured by using helium-based gas mixtures and aluminum cathode and field wires. First in-beam performance results are contrasted with expectations from simulations. Emphasis is placed on the energy loss information, exploring its relevance regarding track recognition.
In this paper, we present a software framework, S$π$RITROOT, which is capable of track reconstruction and analysis of heavy-ion collision events recorded with the S$π$RIT time projection chamber. The track-fitting toolkit GENFIT and the vertex reconstruction toolkit RAVE are applied to a box-type detector system. A pattern recognition algorithm which performs helix track finding and handles overlapping pulses is described. The performance of the software is investigated using experimental data obtained at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Facility (RIBF) at RIKEN. This work focuses on data from $^{…

An algorithm for digital signal analysis using convolutional neural networks (CNN) was developed in this work. The main objective of this algorithm is to make the analysis of experiments with active target time projection chambers more efficient. The code is divided in three steps: baseline correction, signal deconvolution and peak detection and integration. The CNNs were able to learn the signal processing models with relative errors of less than 6\%. The analysis based on CNNs provides the same results as the traditional deconvolution algorithms, but considerably more efficient in terms of c…

The new ITS based on CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors will significantly improve the impact parameter resolution and the tracking e…
The transition from a proportional to a self quenching streamer mode, as a function of track length and angle, was investigated in a single wire chamber filled with either pure DME or isobutane. The chamber was irradiated with $^{241}$Am alpha particles. An investigation of multistreamer events in DME due to alpha particles entering the chamber at 20$^\circ$ with track length 4 mm gave an estimate of a dead zone, defined as the product of dead length and dead time, to be less than 0.1 $μ$s$\cdot$cm. This value is 3 orders of magnitude less than those observed by other groups for noble gases ba…
SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) is a beam dump experiment proposed at the CERN SPS aiming at the observation of long lived particles very weakly coupled with ordinary matter mostly produced in the decay of charmed hadrons. The beam dump facility of SHiP is also a copious factory of neutrinos of all three kinds and therefore a dedicated neutrino detector is foreseen in the SHiP apparatus. The neutrino detector exploits the Emulsion Cloud Chamber technique with a modular structure, alternating walls of target units and planes of electronic detectors providing the time stamp to the event. GEM …

The High-Luminosity LHC will provide the unique opportunity to explore the nature of physics beyond the Standard Model of strong and electroweak interactions. Highly selective first level triggers are essential for the physics programme of the ATLAS experiment at the HL-LHC where the instantaneous luminosity will exceed the LHC Run 1 instantaneous luminosity by almost an order of magnitude. The ATLAS first level muon trigger rate is dominated by low momentum muons, selected due to the moderate momentum resolution of the resistive plate and thin gap trigger chambers. This limitation can be over…
Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) detectors offer charged particle imaging capability with remarkable spatial resolution. Precise event reconstruction procedures are critical in order to fully exploit the potential of this technology. In this paper we present a new, general approach of three-dimensional reconstruction for the LAr TPC with a practical application to track reconstruction. The efficiency of the method is evaluated on a sample of simulated tracks. We present also the application of the method to the analysis of real data tracks collected during the ICARUS T600 detecto…

We report on the successful operation of a double phase Liquid Argon Large Electron Multiplier Time Projection Chamber (LAr LEM-TPC) equipped with two dimensional projective anodes with dimensions 10$\times$10 cm$^2$, and with a maximum drift length of 21 cm. The anodes were manufactured for the first time from a single multilayer printed circuit board (PCB). Various layouts of the readout views have been tested and optimised. In addition, the ionisation charge was efficiently extracted from the liquid to the gas phase with a single grid instead of two previously. We studied the response and t…
Single muon triggers are crucial for the physics programmes at hadron collider experiments. To be sensitive to electroweak processes, single muon triggers with transverse momentum thresholds down to 20 GeV and dimuon triggers with even lower thresholds are required. In order to keep the rates of these triggers at an acceptable level these triggers have to be highly selective, i.e. they must have small accidental trigger rates and sharp trigger turn-on curves. The muon systems of the LHC experiments and experiments at future colliders like FCC-hh will use two muon chamber systems for the muon t…
An imaging system for measuring the spatial distribtion of charged particle tracks in a low-pressure gas is presented. The method is based on an optically read out time projection chamber. Results of experiments with fast heavy ions are shown.
Tracking capabilities in Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) are strongly dictated by the homogeneity of the drift field. Ion back-flow in various gas detectors, mainly induced by the secondary ionization processes during amplification, has long been known as a source of drift field distortion. Here, we report on beam-induced space-charge effects from the primary ionization process in the drift region in low-energy nuclear physics experiment with Active Target Time Projection Chamber (AT-TPC). A qualitative explanation of the observed effects is provided using detailed electron transport simulatio…
Modern time projection chambers are increasingly based on micro pattern gas detector readout systems. In this paper a self-supporting method used to mount Gas Electron Multiplier foils is presented. It is based on light weight ceramic grids, and promises to cover large readout areas with minimum dead zones and material, while ensuring a flat and mechanically stable mounting. The structure has been tested in a Time Projection Chamber prototype, using cosmic muon tracks. The impact of the mounting structure on the charge measurement, the track reconstruction and the single point resolution is qu…
The influence of fast neutrons on the occupancy and the single tube resolution of ATLAS muon drift detectors was investigated by exposing a chamber built out of 3 layers of 3 short standard drift tubes to neutron flux-densities of up to 16 kHz/cm2 at a neutron energy of E=11 MeV. Pulse shape capable NE213 scintillaton detectors and a calibrated BF3 neutron detector provided monitoring of the neutron flux-density and energy. The sensitivity of the drift chamber to the neutrons was measured to be 4*10-4 by comparing data sets with and without neutron background. For the investigation of tracks o…
Data sets with high statistics taken at the cosmic ray facility, equipped with 3 ATLAS BOS MDT chambers, in Garching (Munich) have been used to study temperature and pressure effects on gas gain and drifttime. The deformation of a thermally expanded chamber was reconstructed using the internal RasNik alignment monitoring system and the tracks from cosmic data. For these studies a heating system was designed to increase the temperature of the middle chamber by up to 20 Kelvins over room temperature. For comparison the temperature effects on gas properties have been simulated with Garfield. The …

The PEN apparatus comprises a number of detection systems, all contributing vital information to the PEN event reconstruction. This paper discusses the design, performance, and Monte Carlo simulation of the mini time projection chamber (mTPC) used for pion, muon, and positron beam particle tracking. We also review the use of the extracted trajectory coordinates in the analysis, in particular in constructi…

Two beam tests were carried out with the 180 GeV muon beam at CERN using RPCs with gas gaps of 1.00 or 1.15 mm and equipped with readout strips with 1.27 mm pitch. This is the first beam test of RPCs with fine-pitch readout strips that explores simultaneously precision tracking and triggering capabilities. RPC signals were acquired with precision timing and charge integrating readout electronics at both ends of the strips. The time resolution was measured to be better than 600 ps and the …
The three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of nuclear recoils is of interest for directional detection of fast neutrons and for direction-sensitive searches for weakly interacting massive particles(WIMPs), which may constitute the Dark Matter of the universe. We demonstrate this capability with a miniature gas target Time Projection Chamber (TPC) where the drift charge is avalanche-multiplied with Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) and detected with the ATLAS FE-I3 Pixel Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). We report on performance characterization of the detector, including measuremen…
A prototype multiwire proportional chamber (MWPC) was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a radiopure time projection chamber with MWPC track readout to assay materials for alpha- and beta-emitting surface contaminants for future rare-event-search experiments as well as other scientific fields. The design features and assembly techniques described here are motivated by the position and energy resolution required to reconstruct alpha and beta tracks while efficiently rejecting backgrounds. Results from a test setup using an $^{55}$Fe x-ray source indicate excellent operatio…
Several new experimental concepts in high-energy particle physics have been proposed in recent years. We investigate the idea of detecting pure neutrino-hydrogen interactions in a multinuclear target using the transverse kinematic imbalance technique [Lu et al., Phys. Rev. D 92, 051302 (2015)] in a high-pressure time projection chamber (HPTPC). With full solid-angle acceptance, MeV-level proton tracking threshold, state-of-the-art tracking resolution, and an O(100 m^3) gas volume at 10 bar, an HPTPC could provide an opportunity to realize this technique. We propose the use of hydrogen-rich gases in the TPC to achieve high detection purity with large hydrogen mass. With the projected neutrino b…
The automatic reconstruction of three-dimensional particle tracks from Active Target Time Projection Chambers data can be a challenging task, especially in the presence of noise. In this article, we propose a non-parametric algorithm that is based on the idea of clustering point triplets instead of the original points. We define an appropriate distance measure on point triplets and then apply a single-link hierarchical clustering on the triplets. Compared to parametric approaches like RANSAC or the Hough transform, the new algorithm has the advantage of potentially finding trajectories even of…
We report on the development of an GRPCs (Glass Resistive Plate chambers) Semi- Digital hadron calorimeter for the future International Linear Collider (ILC).Two types of GRPCs (small and 1m2) were tested in PS beam at CERN. Detector performances are presented here in terms of efficiency, pad multiplicity, homogeneity and stability in time.
The DHCAL, the Digital Hadron Calorimeter, is a prototype calorimeter based on Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). The design emphasizes the imaging capabilities of the detector in an effort to optimize the calorimeter for the application of Particle Flow Algorithms (PFAs) to the reconstruction of hadronic jet energies in a colliding beam environment. The readout of the chambers is segmented into 1 x 1 cm2 pads, each read out with a 1-bit (single threshold) resolution. The prototype with approximately 500,000 readout channels underwent extensive testing in both the Fermilab and CERN test beams. T…
Highly selective triggers are essential for the physics programme of the ATLAS experiment at HL-LHC where the instantaneous luminosity will be about an order of magnitude larger than the LHC instantaneous luminosity in Run 1. The first level muon trigger rate is dominated by low momentum muons below the nominal trigger threshold due to the moderate momentum resolution of the Resistive Plate and Thin Gap trigger chambers. The resulting high trigger rates at HL-LHC can be sufficiently reduced by using the data of the precision Muon Drift Tube chambers for the trigger decision. This requires the …
This paper presents the Forward Time Projection Chamber (FTPC) system of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. This TPC system applies a novel tandem-TPC design to reduce the background originating from particle tracks not synchronous with the event trigger. The FTPC system is composed of three chambers with alternating drift field directions. The chambers were installed directly along the beamline region of the NA61/SHINE detector in a medium- to high-intensity (10-100 kHz) hadron or ion beam. The tandem TPC system has proved to be capable of rejecting out-of-time background …
Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) have been selected for the future long-baseline Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). To allow LArTPCs to operate in the high-multiplicity near detector environment of DUNE, a new charge readout technology is required. Traditional charge readout technologies introduce intrinsic ambiguities, combined with a slow detector response, these ambiguities have limited the performance of LArTPCs, until now. Here, we present a novel pixelated charge readout that enables the full 3D tracking capabilities of LArTPCs. We characterise the signal to nois…
A gaseous time-projection chamber (TPC) with a reconstructable $z$ coordinate for nuclear recoil tracks has been developed for dark-matter searches and $α$ particle imagings in a low radioactivity background. A TPC with a sheet-resistor field cage shows a potential to detect charge and photons produced by tracks if the sheet resistor has optical transmittance for visible light, and determine a drift length from a time difference between these signals. In this study, an optical transmittance of sheet resistors was measured to be $24.5\pm0.1_{\rm stat}\pm0.6_{\rm syst}\%$ for the $\rm {CF}_4$ ga…
