In this paper, we present a software framework, S$π$RITROOT, which is capable of track reconstruction and analysis of heavy-ion collision events recorded with the S$π$RIT time projection chamber. The track-fitting toolkit GENFIT and the vertex reconstruction toolkit RAVE are applied to a box-type detector system. A pattern recognition algorithm which performs helix track finding and handles overlapping pulses is described. The performance of the software is investigated using experimental data obtained at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Facility (RIBF) at RIKEN. This work focuses on data from $^{132}$Sn + $^{124}$Sn collision events with beam energy of 270 AMeV. Particle identification is established using $\left<dE/dx\right>$ and magnetic rigidity, with pions, hydrogen isotopes, and helium isotopes.
The SAMURAI Pion Reconstruction and Ion-Tracker Time Projection Chamber (S$π$RIT TPC) was designed to enable measurements of heavy ion collisions with the SAMURAI spectrometer at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and provide constraints on the Equation of State of neutron-rich nuclear matter. The S$π$RIT TPC has a 50.5 cm drift length and an 86.4 cm $\times$ 134.4 cm pad plane with 12,096 pads that are equipped with the Generic Electronics for TPCs readout electronics. The S$π$RIT TPC allows excellent reconstruction of particles and provides isotopic resolution for pions and other lig…
A Time-Projection Chamber (TPC) called the SAMURAI Pion-Reconstruction and Ion-Tracker (S$π$RIT) has recently been constructed at Michigan State University as part of an international effort to constrain the symmetry-energy term in the nuclear Equation of State (EoS). The S$π$RIT TPC will be used in conjunction with the SAMURAI spectrometer at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) at RIKEN to measure yield ratios for pions and other light isospin multiplets produced in central collisions of neutron-rich heavy ions, such as $^{132}$Sn + $^{124}$Sn. The S$π$RIT TPC can function both as a T…
Time projection chambers (TPCs) are widely used in nuclear and particle physics. They are particularly useful when measuring reaction products from heavy ion collisions. Most nuclear experiments at low energy are performed in a fixed target configuration, in which the unreacted beam will pass through the detection volume. As the beam intensity increases, the buildup of positive ions created from the ionization of the detector gas by the beam creates the main source of space charge, distorting the nominal electric field of the TPC. This has a profound effect on the accuracy of the measured mome…
The aim of this thesis was to perform the drift chamber calibration and charged particles 3d track reconstruction for the P349 antiproton polarization experiment. A dedicated procedures were designed, implemented and tested on the experimental data for the the D1 drift chamber. The calibration consisted of the drift time offsets determination, estimation of the initial drift time - space relations by means of the homogeneous irradiation method and the iterative procedure for the time - space relations optimization. Calibration curves for all wire planes of the detector were determined. The obt…
Wire chambers are routinely operated as tracking detectors in magnetic spectrometers at high-intensity continuous electron beams. Especially in experiments studying reactions with small cross-sections the reaction yield is limited by the background rate in the chambers. One way to determine the track of a charged particle through a multi-wire proportional chamber (MWPC) is the measurement of the charge distribution induced on its cathodes. In practical applications of this read-out method, the algorithm to relate the measured charge distribution to the avalanche position is an important factor…
In this article, we present the results of using Convolutional Auto-Encoders for de-noising raw data for CLAS12 drift chambers. The de-noising neural network provides increased efficiency in track reconstruction and also improved performance for high luminosity experimental data collection. The de-noising neural network used in conjunction with the previously developed track classifier neural network \cite{Gavalian:2022hfa} lead to a significant track reconstruction efficiency increase for current luminosity ($0.6\times10^{35}~cm^{-2}~sec^{-1}$ ). The increase in experimentally measured quanti…
We describe first results obtained with a track structure imaging system for measuring the ionisation topology of charged particles in a low-pressure gas. The detection method is based on a time projection chamber (TPC) filled with low-pressure triethylamine (TEA). Images of ionisation tracks of electrons, protons, and heavier ions are presented and analysed.

Tracking capabilities in Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) are strongly dictated by the homogeneity of the drift field. Ion back-flow in various gas detectors, mainly induced by the secondary ionization processes during amplification, has long been known as a source of drift field distortion. Here, we report on beam-induced space-charge effects from the primary ionization process in the drift region in low-energy nuclear physics experiment with Active Target Time Projection Chamber (AT-TPC). A qualitative explanation of the observed effects is provided using detailed electron transport simulatio…

In this article we describe the development of machine learning models to assist the CLAS12 tracking algorithm by identifying tracks through inferring missing segments in the drift chambers. Auto encoders are used to reconstruct missing segments from track trajectory. Implemented neural network was able to reliably reconstruct missing segment positions with accuracy of $\approx 0.35$ wires, and lead to recovery of missing tracks with accuracy of $>99.8\%$.
We report about a nuclear track imaging system which is designed to study in detail the ionization topology of charged particle tracks in a low-pressure gas. The detection method is based on a time projection chamber (TPC) filled with low-pressure triethylamine (TEA). Ionization electrons produced by energetic charged particles are three-dimensionally imaged by recording light from electron avalanches with an intensified CCD system. The detector permits to inves-tigate the spatial ionization distributions of particle tracks in gas, of equivalent length and resolution in tissue of 4 mm and 40 n…
The software of track reconstruction of the vertex chamber of BESII-VCJULI was studied when it was transplanted from the HP-Unix platform to PC-Linux. The problems of distinct dictionary storage and precision treatment in these two different platforms were found and settled in the modified software. Then the obvious differences of the candidate track number in an event and some track parameters caused by them were reduced from 74% to 0.02% and from 5% to 0.5%, respectively. As a result, the quality of the track finding was greatly improved and the CPU time saved.
At present time Budker INP is developing a Super Charm-Tau factory project, which consists of a high-luminosity collider with the luminosity of $10^{35}$,cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ and a universal magnetic detector. The tracking system of the detector will comprise of an Inner Tracker (IT) and a Drift Chamber (DC). One of the options for IT is Time Projection Chamber (TPC). The advantages of the TPC are high spatial resolution and particle identification capabilities by registration of dE/dx losses. However, using a Time Projection Chamber implies serious challenges. For example, the TPC have to simult…
The international PEN collaboration aims to obtain the branching ratio for the pion electronic decay $π^+ \to e^+ν_e(γ)$, aka $π_{e2}$, to a relative precision of $5\times 10^{-4}$ or better. The PEN apparatus comprises a number of detection systems, all contributing vital information to the PEN event reconstruction. This paper discusses the design, performance, and Monte Carlo simulation of the mini time projection chamber (mTPC) used for pion, muon, and positron beam particle tracking. We also review the use of the extracted trajectory coordinates in the analysis, in particular in constructi…
The automatic reconstruction of three-dimensional particle tracks from Active Target Time Projection Chambers data can be a challenging task, especially in the presence of noise. In this article, we propose a non-parametric algorithm that is based on the idea of clustering point triplets instead of the original points. We define an appropriate distance measure on point triplets and then apply a single-link hierarchical clustering on the triplets. Compared to parametric approaches like RANSAC or the Hough transform, the new algorithm has the advantage of potentially finding trajectories even of…
The GPU-accelerated track finding method is investigated to track electrons from neutrinoless muon decay in the COMET Phase-I experiment. Inside the cylindrical drift chamber, one third of the signal electron trajectories are composed of multiple turns where the correct hit assignments to each turn partition are significant in the track finding. Scanning all possible track seeds of position and momentum can resolve the hit-to-turn assignment problem with a high robustness, but requires a huge computational cost: The initial track seeds $(θ,z,p_x,p_y,p_z)$ have broad uncertainties, so there exi…
We report photoelectron track length distributions between 3 and 8 keV in gas mixtures of Ne+CO2+CH3NO2 (260:80:10 Torr) and CO2+CH3NO2 (197.5: 15 Torr). The measurements were made using a negative ion time projection chamber (NITPC) at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). We report the first quantitative analysis of photoelectron track length distributions in a gas. The distribution of track lengths at a given energy is best fit by a lognormal distribution. A powerlaw distribution of the form, f(E)=a(E/Eo)n, is found to fit the relationship…
The India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) collaboration, as part of its detector R\&D program, has developed prototype stacks of resistive plate chambers (RPCs) to study their performance. These stacks have also been used as testbenches for the development of related hardware and software. A crucial parameter in the characterisation of these detectors and other physics studies is the detection efficiency, which is estimated from track fitting of cosmic muons passing through the stack. So far, a simple straight line fit was used for track fitting, which was sensitive to noise hits and led to r…
We develop and validate a new algorithm called \textit{primary track recovery} (\ptr) that effectively deconvolves known physics and detector effects from nuclear recoil tracks in gas time projection chambers (TPCs) with high-resolution readout. This gives access to the primary track charge, length, and vector direction (helping to resolve the "head-tail" ambiguity). Additionally, \ptr provides a measurement of the transverse and longitudinal diffusion widths, which can be used to determine the absolute position of tracks in the drift direction for detector fiducialization. Using simulated hel…
The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) is a general-purpose experimental apparatus with an inner tracking detector for measuring charged particles, surrounded by a calorimeter for measurements of electromagnetic and hadronic showers, and a muon detector system. We present a technique for, and results of, a precise relative alignment of the drift chamber wires of the CDF tracker. This alignment has been an important component of the track momentum calibration, which is the basis for the charged-lepton calibration for the measurement of the W boson mass at CDF.
Two cylindrical forward TPC detectors are described which were constructed to extend the phase space coverage of the STAR experiment to the region 2.5 < |η| < 4.0. For optimal use of the available space and in order to cope with the high track density of central Au+Au collisions at RHIC, a novel design was developed using radial drift in a low diffusion gas. From prototype measurements a 2-track resolution of 1-2 mm is expected.
The contribution of Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) to muon reconstruction in CMS has been studied on a sample of muons collected in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2011. Muon reconstruction is performed using the all-silicon inner tracker and with up to four stations of gas-ionization muon detectors. Drift Tubes and Cathode Strip Chambers detect muons in the barrel and endcap regions, respectively, and are complemented by the RPC system. Measured distributions of reconstructed hits in the RPCs crossed by muons from Z decays with a transverse momentum pT above 20 GeV/c …
The PandaX-III (Particle And Astrophysical Xenon Experiment III) experiment will search for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) of 136Xe at the China Jin-Ping underground Laboratory II (CJPL-II). In the first phase of the experiment, a high pressure gas Time Projection Chamber (TPC) will contain 200 kg, 90% 136Xe enriched gas operated at 10 bar. Microbulk Micromegas, a fine pitch micro-pattern gas detector, will be used for charge readout and enable us to reconstruct tracks of NLDBD events with good energy and spatial resolution. With simulation, we demonstrate excellent background suppress…
The ALICE experiment at CERN is undergoing a major upgrade during the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) of the LHC during 2019-2020. The key elements regarding the central barrel are the installation of a new Inner Tracking System (ITS) and the upgrade of the large Time Projection Chamber (TPC). The TPC is currently being upgraded with a new readout system, including new GEM-based Readout Chambers and new front-end electronics enabling us to operate it in continuous mode. The new ITS based on CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors will significantly improve the impact parameter resolution and the tracking e…
The STAR Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is used to record collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The TPC is the central element in a suite of detectors that surrounds the interaction vertex. The TPC provides complete coverage around the beam-line, and provides complete tracking for charged particles within +- 1.8 units of pseudo-rapidity of the center-of-mass frame. Charged particles with momenta greater than 100 MeV/c are recorded. Multiplicities in excess of 3,000 tracks per event are routinely reconstructed in the software. The TPC measures 4 m in diameter by 4.2 m long, m…
The T2K experiment is designed to study neutrino oscillation properties by directing a high intensity neutrino beam produced at J-PARC in Tokai, Japan, towards the large Super-Kamiokande detector located 295 km away, in Kamioka, Japan. The experiment includes a sophisticated near detector complex, 280 m downstream of the neutrino production target in order to measure the properties of the neutrino beam and to better understand neutrino interactions at the energy scale below a few GeV. A key element of the near detectors is the ND280 tracker, consisting of two active scintillator-bar target sys…
Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) with charge readout via micro pattern gaseous detectors can provide detailed measurements of charge density distributions. We here report on measurements of alpha particle tracks, using a TPC where the drift charge is amplified with Gas Electron Multipliers and detected with a pixel ASIC. We find that by measuring the 3-D topology of drift charge and fitting for its transverse diffusion, we obtain the absolute position of tracks in the drift direction. For example, we obtain a precision of 1~cm for 1~cm-long alpha track segments. To our knowledge this is the fir…
A new Radial Time Projection Chamber (RTPC) was developed at the Jefferson Laboratory to track low-energy nuclear recoils for the purpose of measuring exclusive nuclear reactions, such as coherent Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and coherent meson production off $^4$He. In such processes, the $^4$He nucleus remains intact in the final state, however the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) cannot track the low energy $α$ particles. In 2009, we carried out measurements using the CLAS spectrometer supplemented by the RTPC positioned directly around a gaseous $^4$He target, allowing a det…
Small-diameter muon drift tube (sMDT) chambers with 15 mm tube diameter are a cost-effective technology for high-precision muon tracking over large areas at high background rates as expected at future high-energy hadron colliders including HL-LHC. The chamber design and construction procedures have been optimized for mass production and provide sense wire positioning accuracy of better than 10 ?m. The rate capability of the sMDT chambers has been extensively tested at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility. It exceeds the one of the ATLAS muon drift tube (MDT) chambers, which are operated at unpr…
The High-Luminosity LHC will provide the unique opportunity to explore the nature of physics beyond the Standard Model of strong and electroweak interactions. Highly selective first level triggers are essential for the physics programme of the ATLAS experiment at the HL-LHC where the instantaneous luminosity will exceed the LHC Run 1 instantaneous luminosity by almost an order of magnitude. The ATLAS first level muon trigger rate is dominated by low momentum muons, selected due to the moderate momentum resolution of the resistive plate and thin gap trigger chambers. This limitation can be over…
Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) detectors offer charged particle imaging capability with remarkable spatial resolution. Precise event reconstruction procedures are critical in order to fully exploit the potential of this technology. In this paper we present a new, general approach of three-dimensional reconstruction for the LAr TPC with a practical application to track reconstruction. The efficiency of the method is evaluated on a sample of simulated tracks. We present also the application of the method to the analysis of real data tracks collected during the ICARUS T600 detecto…
Single muon triggers are crucial for the physics programmes at hadron collider experiments. To be sensitive to electroweak processes, single muon triggers with transverse momentum thresholds down to 20 GeV and dimuon triggers with even lower thresholds are required. In order to keep the rates of these triggers at an acceptable level these triggers have to be highly selective, i.e. they must have small accidental trigger rates and sharp trigger turn-on curves. The muon systems of the LHC experiments and experiments at future colliders like FCC-hh will use two muon chamber systems for the muon t…
Modern time projection chambers are increasingly based on micro pattern gas detector readout systems. In this paper a self-supporting method used to mount Gas Electron Multiplier foils is presented. It is based on light weight ceramic grids, and promises to cover large readout areas with minimum dead zones and material, while ensuring a flat and mechanically stable mounting. The structure has been tested in a Time Projection Chamber prototype, using cosmic muon tracks. The impact of the mounting structure on the charge measurement, the track reconstruction and the single point resolution is qu…
The influence of fast neutrons on the occupancy and the single tube resolution of ATLAS muon drift detectors was investigated by exposing a chamber built out of 3 layers of 3 short standard drift tubes to neutron flux-densities of up to 16 kHz/cm2 at a neutron energy of E=11 MeV. Pulse shape capable NE213 scintillaton detectors and a calibrated BF3 neutron detector provided monitoring of the neutron flux-density and energy. The sensitivity of the drift chamber to the neutrons was measured to be 4*10-4 by comparing data sets with and without neutron background. For the investigation of tracks o…
Data sets with high statistics taken at the cosmic ray facility, equipped with 3 ATLAS BOS MDT chambers, in Garching (Munich) have been used to study temperature and pressure effects on gas gain and drifttime. The deformation of a thermally expanded chamber was reconstructed using the internal RasNik alignment monitoring system and the tracks from cosmic data. For these studies a heating system was designed to increase the temperature of the middle chamber by up to 20 Kelvins over room temperature. For comparison the temperature effects on gas properties have been simulated with Garfield. The …
Low radioactive material screening is becoming essential for rare event search experiments, such as neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter searches in underground laboratories. A gaseous time projection chamber (TPC) can be used for such purposes with large active areas and high efficiency. A gaseous TPC with a Micromegas readout plane of approximately 20$\times$20 cm$^2$ is successfully constructed for surface alpha contamination measurements. We have characterized the energy resolution, gain stability, and tracking capability with calibration sources. With the unique track-related ba…
We have previously reported on the construction and successful operation of the novel double phase Liquid Argon Large Electron Multiplier Time Projection Chamber (LAr LEM-TPC). This detector concept provides a 3D-tracking and calorimetric device capable of adjustable charge amplification, a promising readout technology for next-generation neutrino detectors and direct Dark Matter searches. In this paper, we report on the first operation of a LAr LEM-TPC prototype - with an active area of 10$\times$10 cm$^2$ and 21 cm drift length - equipped with a single 1 mm thick LEM amplifying stage and a t…
The transition from a proportional to a self quenching streamer mode, as a function of track length and angle, was investigated in a single wire chamber filled with either pure DME or isobutane. The chamber was irradiated with $^{241}$Am alpha particles. An investigation of multistreamer events in DME due to alpha particles entering the chamber at 20$^\circ$ with track length 4 mm gave an estimate of a dead zone, defined as the product of dead length and dead time, to be less than 0.1 $μ$s$\cdot$cm. This value is 3 orders of magnitude less than those observed by other groups for noble gases ba…
SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) is a beam dump experiment proposed at the CERN SPS aiming at the observation of long lived particles very weakly coupled with ordinary matter mostly produced in the decay of charmed hadrons. The beam dump facility of SHiP is also a copious factory of neutrinos of all three kinds and therefore a dedicated neutrino detector is foreseen in the SHiP apparatus. The neutrino detector exploits the Emulsion Cloud Chamber technique with a modular structure, alternating walls of target units and planes of electronic detectors providing the time stamp to the event. GEM …
We report on studies of fast triggering and high-precision tracking using Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). Two beam tests were carried out with the 180 GeV muon beam at CERN using RPCs with gas gaps of 1.00 or 1.15 mm and equipped with readout strips with 1.27 mm pitch. This is the first beam test of RPCs with fine-pitch readout strips that explores simultaneously precision tracking and triggering capabilities. RPC signals were acquired with precision timing and charge integrating readout electronics at both ends of the strips. The time resolution was measured to be better than 600 ps and the …
The three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of nuclear recoils is of interest for directional detection of fast neutrons and for direction-sensitive searches for weakly interacting massive particles(WIMPs), which may constitute the Dark Matter of the universe. We demonstrate this capability with a miniature gas target Time Projection Chamber (TPC) where the drift charge is avalanche-multiplied with Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) and detected with the ATLAS FE-I3 Pixel Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). We report on performance characterization of the detector, including measuremen…
A prototype multiwire proportional chamber (MWPC) was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a radiopure time projection chamber with MWPC track readout to assay materials for alpha- and beta-emitting surface contaminants for future rare-event-search experiments as well as other scientific fields. The design features and assembly techniques described here are motivated by the position and energy resolution required to reconstruct alpha and beta tracks while efficiently rejecting backgrounds. Results from a test setup using an $^{55}$Fe x-ray source indicate excellent operatio…
We investigate the idea of detecting pure neutrino-hydrogen interactions in a multinuclear target using the transverse kinematic imbalance technique [Lu et al., Phys. Rev. D 92, 051302 (2015)] in a high-pressure time projection chamber (HPTPC). With full solid-angle acceptance, MeV-level proton tracking threshold, state-of-the-art tracking resolution, and an O(100 m^3) gas volume at 10 bar, an HPTPC could provide an opportunity to realize this technique. We propose the use of hydrogen-rich gases in the TPC to achieve high detection purity with large hydrogen mass. With the projected neutrino b…
This manuscript addresses selected aspects of computing for the reconstruction and simulation of particle interactions in subnuclear physics. Based on personal experience with experiments at DESY and at CERN, I cover the evolution of computing hardware and software from the era of track chambers where interactions were recorded on photographic film up to the LHC experiments with their multi-million electronic channels.
We report the design, construction, and initial commissioning results of a large high pressure gaseous Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with Micromegas modules for charge readout. The detector vessel has an inner volume of about 600 L and an active volume of 270 L. At 10 bar operating pressure, the active volume contains about 20 kg of xenon gas and can image charged particle tracks. Drift electrons are collected by the charge readout plane, which accommodates a tessellation of seven Micromegas modules. Each of the Micromegas covers a square of 20 cm by 20 cm. A new type of Microbulk Micromegas i…

An imaging system for measuring the track structure of charged particles in a low-pressure gas is presented. We describe the experimental method and compare experimental results with first results of a simulation of the chamber response.
We report on the successful operation of a double phase Liquid Argon Large Electron Multiplier Time Projection Chamber (LAr LEM-TPC) equipped with two dimensional projective anodes with dimensions 10$\times$10 cm$^2$, and with a maximum drift length of 21 cm. The anodes were manufactured for the first time from a single multilayer printed circuit board (PCB). Various layouts of the readout views have been tested and optimised. In addition, the ionisation charge was efficiently extracted from the liquid to the gas phase with a single grid instead of two previously. We studied the response and t…

A gaseous time-projection chamber (TPC) with a reconstructable $z$ coordinate for nuclear recoil tracks has been developed for dark-matter searches and $α$ particle imagings in a low radioactivity background. A TPC with a sheet-resistor field cage shows a potential to detect charge and photons produced by tracks if the sheet resistor has optical transmittance for visible light, and determine a drift length from a time difference between these signals. In this study, an optical transmittance of sheet resistors was measured to be $24.5\pm0.1_{\rm stat}\pm0.6_{\rm syst}\%$ for the $\rm {CF}_4$ ga…
We have developed a prototype time-resolved neutron imaging detector employing the micro-pixel chamber (muPIC), a micro-pattern gaseous detector, coupled with a field programmable gate array-based data acquisition system for applications in neutron radiography at high-intensity neutron sources. The prototype system, with an active area of 10cm x 10cm and operated at a gas pressure of 2 atm, measures both the energy deposition (via time-over-threshold) and 3-dimensional track of each neutron-induced event, allowing the reconstruction of the neutron interaction point with improved accuracy. Usin…
This paper presents the Forward Time Projection Chamber (FTPC) system of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. This TPC system applies a novel tandem-TPC design to reduce the background originating from particle tracks not synchronous with the event trigger. The FTPC system is composed of three chambers with alternating drift field directions. The chambers were installed directly along the beamline region of the NA61/SHINE detector in a medium- to high-intensity (10-100 kHz) hadron or ion beam. The tandem TPC system has proved to be capable of rejecting out-of-time background …
