The match between the Linac beam energy and the energy determined by the bending field of the Booster magnets is crucial for rf capture, beam quality, and the transmission efficiency in a Booster cycle. The observation of the injection energy match is important for injection tuning. Several signals, such as phase shift drive (PSD), radial position error (RPOS), synchrotron phase (SPD), and fast phase error (FPERR), provide consistent information on the energy match and can be used for a injection match tuning.
It is difficult for us to measure the Booster ring impedance up to the GHz range due to the instrumentation limit. Since the de-bunching process in the Linac to Booster transfer is determined by the complex impedance of the Booster ring, one can obtain an impedance model, which has the best match to the machine impedance, just by searching the optimal fit between the simulated and measured turn-by-turn resistive wall signal (RWS).
In synchrotron machines, the beam extraction is accomplished by a combination of septa and kicker magnets which deflect the beam from an accelerator into another. Ideally the kicker field must rise/fall in between the beam bunches. However, in reality, an intentional beam-free time region (aka "notch") is created on the beam pulse to assure that the beam can be extracted with minimal losses. In the case of the Fermilab Booster, the notch is created in the ring near injection energy by the use of fast kickers which deposit the beam in a shielded collimation region within the accelerator tunnel.…
The injector linacs of the JLC/NLC project include the prelinac, the e+ drive linac, the $e- booster, and the $e+ booster. The first three will be S-band machines, the last one, an L-band machine. We have demonstrated that by using detuning alone in the accelerator structure design of these linacs we will have acceptable tolerances for emittance growth due to both injection jitter and structure misalignments, for both the nominal (2.8ns) and alternate (1.4ns) bunch spacings.
The injector linacs of the JLC/NLC comprise the e+ booster, the e- drive linac, the e+ booster, and the two prelinacs. These four systems together transport the two types of beams from the 80 MeV point at the end of their respective bunchers up to the storage rings, and then from the storage rings to the 10 GeV point at the beginning of the bunch compressors. Nominally, the e+ booster structure will be L-band and the others S-band. In transport through these linacs it is important that the emittances and particle losses stay within specified tolerances. The ongoing Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) enables us to reach 700 kW beam power on the NuMI neutrino targets. By the end of the next decade, the current 400 MeV normal conducting LINAC will be replaced by an 800 MeV superconducting LINAC (PIP-II) with an increased beam power >50% of the PIP design goal. The Fermilab Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) was formed in late 2011 to address important and necessary upgrades to the Proton Source machines (Injector line, Linac and Booster). The goal is to increase the proton flux by doubling the Booster beam cycle rate while maintaining the same intensity per cycle, the same uptime, and the same residual activation in the enclosure. A test of the acceleration of multiple charge-state uranium beams was performed at the ATLAS accelerator. A 238U+26 beam was accelerated in the ATLAS PII linac to 286 MeV (~1.2 MeV/u) and stripped in a carbon foil located 0.5 m from the entrance of the ATLAS Booster section. A 58Ni9+ 'guide' beam from the tandem injector was used to tune the Booster for 238U+38. All charge states from the stripping were injected into the booster and accelerated. The first phase of the HIE-ISOLDE project at CERN consists of a superconducting (SC) linac upgrade in order to increase the energy of post-accelerated radioactive ion beams from 2.8 MeV/u to over 10 MeV/u (for A/q = 4.5). As the pre-injector of the LHC injector chain, the proton linac at CERN is required to provide a high-intensity (180mA) beam to the Proton Synchrotron Booster. The results of measurements at this intensity will be presented. Furthermore, the linac is now equipped with bunch shape monitors from INR, Moscow, which have allowed the comparison of the Alvarez tank RF settings with simulations.

At the Fermilab Booster, and many other proton facili-ties, an intense proton beam is accumulated by multi-turn injection of an H- beam through a stripping foil. The circu-lating beam scatters off the injection foil and large-angle Coulomb scattering leads to uncontrolled losses concen-trated in the first betatron period. We measure the foil scat-tering loss rate in the Fermilab Booster as a function of LINAC current, number of injection turns, and time on the injection foil. We find that current Booster operation has ~1% foil scattering loss and we make projections for the Proton Improvement …

LINAC 4 is a normal conducting H- structure proposed to intensify the proton flux currently available for the CERN accelerator chain. This linac is designed to accelerate a 65 mA beam up to 160 MeV to be injected into the CERN Proton Synchrotron Booster. PIP-II is the Fermilab's flagship project for providing powerful, high-intensity proton beams to the laboratory's experiments. The heart of PIP-II is an 800-MeV superconducting linac accelerator. It will be located in a new tunnel with new service buildings and connected to the present Booster through a new transfer line. To support the design of civil engineering and mechanical integration, this paper provides preliminary estimation of radiation level in the gallery at an operational beam loss limit of 0.1 W/m, by means of Monte Carlo calculations with FLUKA and MARS15 codes.
The peak current limit for the Fermilab Linac was recently studied. The purpose was to learn what components of the present Linac can be used for the first stage of a proposed proton driver[1]. For this application the Linac must provide a H- beam in excess of 5000 mA-msec per pulse. The original Fermilab Linac was designed for protons with a peak current of 75 mA and a pulse length of four Booster turns (~10 msec). The MTA beam line has been specifically designed to facilitate measurements of the Fermilab Linac beam emittance and properties utilizing a long, 10m, element-free straight. Linac beam is extracted downstream of the 400-MeV electrostatic chopper located in the Booster injection line. The completion of the PIP-II project and its superconducting linear accelerator will provide up to 1.2 MW of beam power to the LBNF/DUNE facility for neutrino physics. We report the results of a recent beam dynamics study, motivated by the need to redesign the LCLS photoinjector, that lead to the discovery of a new effective working point for a split RF photoinjector. We consider the emittance compensation regime of a space charge beam: by increasing the solenoid strength, the emittance evolution shows a double minimum behavior in the drifting region. If the booster is located where the relative emittance maximum and the envelope waist occur, the second emittance minimum can be shifted to the booster exit and frozen at a very low level (0.3 mm-mrad for a 1 n…
The FNAL accelerator complex is poised to reach MW neutrino beams on target for the exploration of the dark sector physics and rare physics program spaces.
