Using analytical modeling and detailed numerical simulations, we investigate properties of hybrid systems of Photonic Crystal micro-cavities which incorporate a highly non-linear Ultra Slow Light medium. We demonstrate that such systems, while being miniature in size (order wavelength), and integrable, could enable ultra-fast non-linear all-optical switching at single photon energy levels.
We propose an optical memory cell based on ultrafast wavelength switching in coupled-cavity microlasers, featuring bistability between modes separated by several nanometers. A numerical implementation is demonstrated by simulating a two-dimensional photonic crystal microlaser. Switching times of less than 10 ps, switching energy around 15--30 fJ and on-off contrast of more than 40 dB are achieved. Theoretical guidelines for optimizing the performance of the memory cell in terms of switching time and energy are drawn.
All-optical switching increasingly plays an important role in optical information processing. However, simultaneous achievement of ultralow power consumption, broad bandwidth and high extinction ratio remains challenging. We experimentally demonstrate an ultralow-power all-optical switching by exploiting chiral interaction between light and optically active material in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). We achieve switching extinction ratio of 20.0(3.8) and 14.7(2.8) dB with power cost of 66.1(0.7) and 1.3(0.1) fJ/bit, respectively. The bandwidth of our all-optical switching is about 4.2 GHz…
We perform frequency- and time-resolved all-optical switching of a GaAs-AlAs micropillar cavity using an ultrafast pump-probe setup. The switching is achieved by two-photon excitation of free carriers. We track the cavity resonances in time with a high frequency resolution. The pillar modes exhibit simultaneous frequency shifts, albeit with markedly different maximum switching amplitudes and relaxation dynamics. These differences stem from the non-uniformity of the free carrier density in the micropillar, and are well understood by taking into account the spatial distribution of injected free …
We present ultrafast optical switching experiments on 3D photonic band gap crystals. Switching the Si inverse opal is achieved by optically exciting free carriers by a two-photon process. We probe reflectivity in the frequency range of second order Bragg diffraction where the photonic band gap is predicted. We find good experimental switching conditions for free-carrier plasma frequencies between 0.3 and 0.7 times the optical frequency: we thus observe a large frequency shift of up to D omega/omega= 1.5% of all spectral features including the peak that corresponds to the photonic band gap. We …
We report on the demonstration of a femtosecond all-optical modulator providing, without nonlinearity and therefore at arbitrarily low intensity, ultrafast light-by-light control. The device engages the coherent interaction of optical waves on a metamaterial nanostructure only 30 nm thick to efficiently control absorption of near-infrared (750-1040 nm) femtosecond pulses, providing switching contrast ratios approaching 3:1 with a modulation bandwidth in excess of 2 THz. The functional paradigm illustrated here opens the path to a family of novel meta-devices for ultra-fast optical data process…
We experimentally investigate a nonlinear switching mechanism in a dual-core highly nonlinear optical fiber. We focus the input beam of femtosecond pulses on one core only, to identify transitions between inter-core oscillations, self-trapping in the cross core, and self-trapping of the pulse in the straight core. A model based in the system of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations provides surprisingly good agreement with the experimental findings.
We present ultrafast all-optical switching measurements of Si woodpile photonic band gap crystals. The crystals are spatially homogeneously excited, and probed by measuring reflectivity over an octave in frequency (including the telecom range) as a function of time. After 300 fs, the complete stop band has shifted to higher frequencies as a result of optically excited free carriers. The switched state relaxes quickly with a time constant of 18 ps. We present a quantitative analysis of switched spectra with theory for finite photonic crystals. The induced changes in refractive index are well de…
We present a systematic study of ultrafast all-optical switching of Si photonic band gap woodpile crystals using broadband tunable nondegenerate pump-probe spectroscopy. At pump-probe coincidence, we investigate the behavior the differential reflectivity at the blue edge of the stopband for a wide range of pump- and probe frequencies. Both dispersive and absorptive features are observed from the probe spectra at coincidence. As the pump frequency is tuned through half the electronic bandgap of Si, the magnitude of both these features increases. For the first time we unambiguously identify this…
The authors study the ultrafast switching-on and -off of planar GaAs/AlAs microcavities. Up to 0.8% refractive index changes are achieved by optically exciting free carriers at 1720 nm and a pulse energy of 1.8 micro Joules. The cavity resonance is dynamically tracked by measuring reflectivity versus time delay with tunable laser pulses, and is found to shift by as much as 3.3 linewidths within a few picoseconds. The switching-off occurs with a decay time of around 50 ps. The authors derive the dynamic behavior of the carrier density and of the complex refractive index. They propose that the i…
We have demonstrated that a rather weak external optical feedback with delay can lead to the mode switching of the counterpropogating modes. The delay time should be longer then any system characteristic time. The equations describing the ring resonator with the delayed optical feedback was obtained from the first principles. The analytical formula for the necessary external feedback strength was derived. Other than the regular behavior, the system demonstrates a complex chaotic behavior.
We argue the possibility of realization of a polarization insensitive all-optical switching in a planar metamaterial composed of a 4-fold periodic array of two concentric metal rings placed on a substrate of nonlinear material. It is demonstrated that a switching may be achieved between essentially different values of transmission near the resonant frequency of the high-quality-factor Fano-shape trapped-mode excitation.
We demonstrate ultrafast soliton-based nonlinear balancing of dual-core asymmetry in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber at sub-nanojoule pulse energy level. The effect of fiber asymmetry was studied experimentally by selective excitation and monitoring of individual fiber cores at different wavelengths between 1500 nm and 1800 nm. Higher energy transfer rate to non-excited core was observed in the case of fast core excitation due to nonlinear asymmetry balancing of temporal solitons, which was confirmed by the dedicated numerical simulations based on the coupled generalized nonlinear Schr…
The wavelength switching dynamics of two-colour semiconductor lasers with optical injection and feedback are presented. These devices incorporate slotted regions etched into the laser ridge waveguide for tailoring the output spectrum. Experimental measurements are presented demonstrating that optical injection in one or both modes of these devices can induce wavelength bistability. Measured switching dynamics with modulated optical injection are shown to be in excellent agreement with numerical simulations based on a simple rate equation model. We also demonstrate experimentally that time-dela…
Ultrafast control of light-matter interactions constitutes a crucial feature in view of new technological frontiers of information processing. However, conventional optical elements are either static or feature switching speeds that are extremely low with respect to the timescales at which it is possible to control light. Here, we exploit high-quality-factor engineered epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) modes of a metal-insulator-metal nanocavity to realize an all-optical ultrafast modulation of the reflectance of light at a tailored wavelength. Our approach is based on the presence of the two, spectrall…
We have studied harmonic oscillations in an elliptical optical waveguide array in which the coupling between neighboring waveguides is varied in accord with a Kac matrix so that the propagation constant eigenvalues can take equally spaced values. As a result, long-living Bloch oscillation (BO) and dipole oscillation (DO) are obtained when a linear gradient in the propagation constant is applied. Moreover, we achieve a switching from DO to BO or vice versa by ramping up the gradient profile. The various optical oscillations as well as their switching are investigated by field evolution analysis…
All-optical switching of 77 fs pulses centered at 1560 nm, driven by 270 fs, 1030 nm pulses in a dual-core optical fiber exhibiting high index contrast is presented. The fiber is made of a thermally matched pair of lead silicate and borosilicate glasses used as core and cladding material, respectively. The novel switching approach is based on nonlinear balancing of dual-core asymmetry, by control pulse intensity induced group velocity reduction of the fast fiber channel. Due to the fiber core made of soft glass with high nonlinearity high switching contrast exceeding 20 dB is attained under ap…
We demonstrate the potential of birefringence-based, all-optical, ultrafast conversion between the transverse modes in integrated optical waveguides by modelling the conversion process by numerically solving the multi-mode coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations. The observed conversion is induced by a control beam and due to the Kerr effect, resulting in a transient index grating which coherently scatters probe light from one transverse waveguide mode into another. We introduce birefringent phase matching to enable efficient all-optically induced mode conversion at different wavelengths of t…
An optical resonator with intracavity Kerr nonlinearity can exhibit dispersive bistability suitable for all-optical switching. With nanophotonic elements it may be possible to achieve attojoule switching energies, which would be very attractive for ultra-low power operation but potentially problematic because of quantum fluctuation-induced spontaneous switching. In this manuscript I derive a quantum-optical model of two Kerr-nonlinear ring resonators connected in a coherent feedback loop, and show via numerical simulation that a properly designed `controller' cavity can significantly reduce th…
Optical nonlinear functions are crucial for various applications in integrated photonics, such as all-optical information processing, photonic neural networks and on-chip ultrafast light sources. Due to the weak nonlinearities in most integrated photonic platforms, realizing optical nonlinear functions typically requires large driving energies in the picojoules level or beyond, thus imposing a barrier for most applications. Here, we tackle this challenge and demonstrate an integrated nonlinear splitter device in lithium niobate nano-waveguides by simultaneous engineering of the dispersion and …
Aluminum nitride has been shown to possess both strong Kerr nonlinearity and electro-optic Pockels effect. By combining these two effects, here we demonstrate on-chip reversible on/off switching of the optical frequency comb generated by an aluminum nitride microring resonator. We optimize the design of gating electrodes and the underneath resonator structure to effectively apply electric field without increasing the optical loss. The switching of the comb is monitored by measuring one of the frequency comb peaks while varying the electric field. The controlled comb electro-optic response is i…
A systematic numerical study of ultrafast nonlinear directional coupler performance based on soliton self-trapping in a novel type of dual-core optical fibre is presented. The considered highly nonlinear fibre structure is composed of a real, intentionally developed soft glass-pair with high refractive index contrast at the level of 0.4 in the near infrared. Nonlinear propagation of picojoule level femtosecond pulses was studied numerically with the aim to identify the best switching performance in input parameter space of 1400 - 1800 nm in terms of excitation wavelengths, and of 75 - 150 fs i…
We propose an all-fiber mode-locking device which operates based on nonlinear switching in a novel concentric ring core fiber structure. The design is particularly attractive given the ease of fabrication and coupling to other components in a mode-locked fiber laser cavity. The nonlinear switching in this coupler is studied and the relative power transmission is obtained. The analysis shows that this nonlinear switch is practical for mode-locking fiber lasers and is forgiving to fabrication errors.
We performed non-degenerate pump-probe experiments on a GaAs/AlAs photonic structure. We switched the photonic properties using the optical Kerr effect and free carriers excited by three photon absorption. From these measurements we extracted the non-degenerate Kerr coefficients over a broad wavelength range and we extracted the three photon absorption coefficient for GaAs at three wavelengths in the near infrared. We show that the optical Kerr effect is large enough to switch a cavity resonance with a high \emph{Q} ($Q>1000$) photonic cavity.
All-optical switches have attracted attention because they can potentially overcome the speed limitation of electric switches. However, ultrafast, energy-efficient all-optical switches have been challenging to realize due to the intrinsically small optical nonlinearity in existing materials. As a solution, we propose graphene-loaded deep-subwavelength plasmonic waveguides (30 nm x 20 nm). Thanks to extreme light confinement, we have significantly enhanced optical nonlinear absorption in graphene, and achieved ultrafast all-optical switching with a switching energy of 35 fJ and a switching time…
Next-generation communication networks require > Tbit/s single-channel data transfer and processing with sub-picosecond switches and routers at network nodes. Materials enabling ultrafast all-optical switching have high potential to solve the speed limitations of current optoelectronic circuits. Chromoproteins have been shown to exhibit a fast light-controlled refractive index change much larger than that induced by the optical Kerr effect due to a purely electronic nonlinearity, alleviating the driving energy requirements for optical switching. Here, we report femtosecond transient grating ex…
Ultrafast control of magnetization on the nanometer length scale, in particular all-optical switching, is key to putting ultrafast magnetism on the path towards future technological application in data storage technology. However, magnetization manipulation with light on this length scale is challenging due to the wavelength limitations of optical radiation. Here, we excite transient magnetic gratings in a GdFe alloy with a periodicity of 87 nm by interference of two coherent femtosecond light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range at the free electron laser facility FERMI. The subse…
We utilize cross-phase modulation to observe all-optical switching in microring resonators fabricated with hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). Using 2.7-ps pulses from a mode-locked fiber laser in the telecom C-band, we observe optical switching of a cw telecom-band probe with full-width at half-maximum switching times of 14.8 ps, using approximately 720 fJ of energy deposited in the microring. In comparison with telecom-band optical switching in undoped crystalline silicon microrings, a-Si:H exhibits substantially higher switching speeds due to reduced impact of free-carrier processes.
We suggest an annular waveguide coupler for switching the angular momentum of light. We study linear and nonlinear coupling of both power and momentum of an optical vortex beam launched into one of the ring cores, and demonstrate that the switching takes place well below the collapse threshold. The switching is more effective for the inner-ring excitation since it triggers more sharply and for the lower power enough to avoid the beam azimuthal instability.
In a proposed book chapter surface plasmon polariton assisted optical switching in noble metal nanoparticle systems is discussed in the sub-band gap formalism.
We consider light scattering by a coated magneto-plasmonic nanoparticle (MPNP) with a Kerr-type nonlinear plasmonic shell and a magneto-optic core. Such structure features two plasmon dipole modes, associated with electronic oscillations on the inner and outer surfaces of the shell. Driven in a nonlinear regime, each mode exhibits a bistable response. Bistability of an inner plasmon leads to switching between this state and a Fano resonance (Fano switching). Once the external light intensity exceeds the critical value, the bistability zones of both eigen modes overlap yielding optical tristabi…
All-optical switching based on optical nonlinearity must undergo complex processes of light-mater interaction in atom and electron scale, so a relative high power and long response time is required, that construct main bottlenecks in all-optical technology. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism for building all-optical switching based on a change resonance modes of meta-atoms in metamaterials, not involved optical nonlinearity of materials. A metamaterial composed of cubic dielectric meta-atoms periodically embedded in a background matrix is designed and constructed. All-optical switch fun…
Optical control of electronic properties is essential for future electric devices. Manipulating such properties has been limited to the microscale in spatial volume due to the wave nature of light; however, scaling down the volume is in extremely high demand. In this study, we demonstrate optical switching within a nanometric spatial volume in an organic electric material. Photochromic materials such as diarylethene derivatives exhibit semiconducting and insulating properties on ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, respectively, which are promising for optical switching and memory. To control t…
Optically induced ultrafast switching of single photons is demonstrated by rotating the photon polarization via the Kerr effect in a commercially available single mode fiber. A switching efficiency of 97\% is achieved with a $\sim1.7$\,ps switching time, and signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim800$. Preservation of the quantum state is confirmed by measuring no significant increase in the second-order autocorrelation function $g^{(2)}(0)$. These values are attained with only nanojoule level pump energies that are produced by a laser oscillator with 80\,MHz repetition rate. The results highlight a si…
We have experimentally observed optical multistabilities (OMs) simultaneously on both the signal and generated Stokes fields in an optical ring cavity with a coherently-prepared multilevel atomic medium. The two observed OMs, which are governed by different physical processes, are coupled via the multilevel atomic medium and exhibit similar threshold behaviors. By modulating the cavity input (signal) field with positive or negative pulses, dual-channel all-optical multi-state switching has been realized and synchronously controlled, which can be useful for increasing communication and computat…
We demonstrate an all-optical switch that operates at ultra-low-light levels and exhibits several features necessary for use in optical switching networks. An input switching beam, wavelength $λ$, with an energy density of $10^{-2}$ photons per optical cross section [$σ=λ^2/(2π)$] changes the orientation of a two-spot pattern generated via parametric instability in warm rubidium vapor. The instability is induced with less than 1 mW of total pump power and generates several $μ$Ws of output light. The switch is cascadable: the device output is capable of driving multiple inputs, and exhibits tra…
We report on an all-optical switch that operates at low light levels. It consists of laser beams counterpropagating through a warm rubidium vapor that induce an off-axis optical pattern. A switching laser beam causes this pattern to rotate even when the power in the switching beam is much lower than the power in the pattern. The observed switching energy density is very low, suggesting that the switch might operate at the single-photon level with system optimization. This approach opens the possibility of realizing a single-photon switch for quantum information networks and for improving trans…
All-optical, mirrorless switching and bistability is demonstrated with bacteriorhodopsin (bR). A low-power, 532 nm laser beam modulates the transmission of a cw laser beam at 635 nm that corresponds to peak absorption of the O-excited state in the bR photocycle. The switch has features like a NOT-gate; its switching contrast depends on the pulse width and average power of the modulating laser. The phase of the switching characteristics can be controlled by varying the pulse width and frequency of the modulating laser. Simulations based on a rate equation approach considering a six-state model …
In this Letter we study the generation of quasi-static magnetic fields by the plasmon-induced inverse Faraday effect and propose a magneto-optical waveguide structure for achieving magnetization switching at sub-ps time in a nano-confined magneto-optical structure. In particular we show that the direction of the generated quasi-static field in a magneto-optical dielectric cavity side-coupled to a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide depends sensitively on the wavelength of the surface plasmon polaritions (SPP). This phenomenon could open up a new energy-efficient ultrafast method for nano-con…
All-optical switches are introduced which are based on deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the form of electrospun fibers, where DNA is semi-intercalated with a push-pull, luminescent nonlinear pyrazoline derivative. Optical birefringence is found in the organic nanofibers, with fully reversible switching controlled through continuous-wave laser irradiation. The photoinduced signal is remarkably large, with birefringence highlighted by optically-driven refractive index anisotropy approaching 0.001. Sub-millisecond characteristic switching times are found. Integrating dye-intercalated DNA complex sy…
Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is one of the most promising materials for developing hybrid photonic integrated devices (PICs). However, despite switching times as low as a few femtoseconds have been reported, the all-optical temporal dynamics of VO2 embedded in a waveguide using an in-plane optical signal remain still hidden. Here, we experimentally investigate this behavior in hybrid VO2/Si waveguides by using pump-probe measurements at telecom wavelengths. Our results show switching times in the micro and nanosecond range, suggesting that the phase transition is triggered thermally from the light a…
We present a two-waveguide coupler which, realizes complete achromatic all-optical switching. The coupling of the waveguides has a hyperbolic-secant shape while the phase mismatch has a sign flip at the maximum of the coupling. We derive an analytic solution for the electric field propagation using coupled mode theory and show that the light switching is robust again small-to-moderate variations in the coupling and phase mismatch. Thus, we realize an achromatic light switching between the two waveguides. We further consider the extended case of three coupled waveguides in an array and pay spec…

We suggest that tunable orientational nonlinearity of nematic liquid crystals can be employed for all-optical switching in periodic photonic structures with liquid-crystal defects. We consider a one-dimensional periodic structure of Si layers with a local defect created by infiltrating a liquid crystal into a pore, and demonstrate, by solving numerically a system of coupled nonlinear equations for the nematic director and the propagating electric field, that the light-induced Freedericksz transition can lead to a sharp switching and diode operation in the photonic devices.
We experimentally demonstrate all-optical interaction-free switching using the quantum Zeno effect, achieving a high contrast of 35:1. The experimental data matches a zero-parameter theoretical model for several different regimes of operation, indicating a good understanding of the switch's characteristics. We also discuss extensions of this work that will allow for significantly improved performance, and the integration of this technology onto chip-scale devices.
A femtosecond laser pulse is able to switch the magnetic state of a 3d-4f ferrimagnetic material on a pico-second time scale. Devices based on this all-optical switching (AOS) mechanism are competitive candidates for ultrafast memory applications. However, a large portion of the light energy is lost by reflection from the metal thin film as well as transmission to the substrate. In this paper, we explore the use of dielectric coatings to increase the light absorption by the magnetic metal layer based on the principle of constructive interference. We experimentally show that the switching energ…
We demonstrate a fiber-optical switch that is activated at tiny energies corresponding to few hundred optical photons per pulse. This is achieved by simultaneously confining both photons and a small laser-cooled ensemble of atoms inside the microscopic hollow core of a single-mode photonic-crystal fiber and using quantum optical techniques for generating slow light propagation and large nonlinear interaction between light beams.
We propose and analyze an on-chip all-optical dynamical tuning scheme for coupled nonlinear resonators employing a single control beam injected in parallel with a signal beam. We show that nonlinear Kerr response can be used to dynamically switch the spectral properties between "dark-state" and electromagnetically-induced transparency configurations. Such scheme can be realized in integrated optical applications for pulse trapping and delaying.
Electro-optic modulators within Mach--Zehnder interferometers are a common construction for optical switches in integrated photonics. A challenge faced when operating at high switching speeds is that noise from the electronic drive signals will effect switching performance. Inspired by the Mach--Zehnder lattice switching devices of Van Campenhout et al. [Opt. Express, 17, 23793 (2009)] and techniques from the field of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance known as composite pulses, we present switches which offer protection against drive-noise in both the on and off state of the switch for both the phase…
We report a theoretical non-equilibrium description of polaritonics and we propose ultrafast all- optical switching due to highly nonlinear polaritonics. The electronic band structure within gold (Au) nano grains is modified by external laser light. The Au grains are coupled to a single mode photonic waveguide and we derive a strong transmission reduction of switching originating from the establishd quantum interference with a finite lifetime.
