Numerical simulations are made for forced turbulence at a sequence of increasing values of Reynolds number, R, keeping fixed a strongly stable, volume-mean density stratification. At smaller values of R, the turbulent velocity is mainly horizontal, and the momentum balance is approximately cyclostrophic and hydrostatic. This is a regime dominated by so-called pancake vortices, with only a weak excitation of internal gravity waves and large values of the local Richardson number, Ri, everywhere. At higher values of R there are successive transitions to (a) overturning motions with local reversals in the density stratification and small or negative values of Ri; (b) growth of a horizontally uniform vertical shear flow component; and (c) growth of a large-scale vertical flow component. Throughout these transitions, pancake vortices continue to dominate the large-scale part of the turbulence, and the gravity wave component remains weak except at small scales.
Developing data-driven subgrid-scale (SGS) models for large eddy simulations (LES) has received substantial attention recently. Despite some success, particularly in a priori (offline) tests, challenges have been identified that include numerical instabilities in a posteriori (online) tests and generalization (i.e., extrapolation) of trained data-driven SGS models, for example to higher Reynolds numbers. Here, using the stochastically forced Burgers turbulence as the test-bed, we show that deep neural networks trained using properly pre-conditioned (augmented) data yield stable and accurate a …
Imbibition plays a central role in diverse energy, environmental, and industrial processes. In many cases, the medium has multiple parallel strata of different permeabilities; however, how this stratification impacts imbibition is poorly understood. We address this gap in knowledge by directly visualizing forced imbibition in three-dimensional (3D) porous media with two parallel strata. We find that imbibition is spatially heterogeneous: for small capillary number Ca, the wetting fluid preferentially invades the fine stratum, while for Ca above a threshold value, the fluid instead preferential…
A numerical study of stably stratified flows past spheres at Reynolds numbers $Re=200$ and $Re=300$ is reported. In these flow regimes, a neutrally stratified laminar flow induces distinctly different near-wake features. However, the flow behaviour changes significantly as the stratification increases and suppresses the scale of vertical displacements of fluid parcels. Computations for a range of Froude numbers $Fr\in [0.1,\infty]$ show that as Froude number decreases, the flow patterns for both Reynolds numbers become similar. The representative simulations of the lee-wave instability at $Fr=…
In this Part 2 we study further experimental properties of two-layer exchange flows in a stratified inclined duct (SID), which are turbulent, strongly-stratified, shear-driven, and continuously-forced. We analyse the same state-of-the-art data sets using the same core shear layer methodology as in Part 1, but we focus here on turbulent energetics and mixing statistics. The detailed analysis of kinetic and scalar energy budgets reveals the specificity and scalings of SID turbulence, while energy spectra provide insight into the current strengths and limitations of our experimental data. The ani…
The high-Reynolds number stratified wake of a slender body is studied using a high-resolution hybrid simulation. The wake generator is a 6:1 prolate spheroid with a tripped boundary layer, the diameter-based body Reynolds number is $Re= U_\infty D/ν= 10^5$, and the body Froude numbers are $Fr=U_\infty/ND=\{2,10,\infty\}$. The wake defect velocity ($U_d$) decays following three stages with different wake decay rates \citep{Spedding1997} as for a bluff body. However, the transition points among stages do not follow the expected $Nt = Nx/U_\infty$ values. Comparison with the wake of a circular di…
We consider turbulence in a stratified 'Kolmogorov' flow, driven by horizontal shear in the form of sinusoidal body forcing in the presence of an imposed background linear stable stratification in the third direction. This flow configuration allows the controlled investigation of the formation of coherent structures, which here organise the flow into horizontal layers by inclining the background shear as the strength of the stratifica- tion is increased. By numerically converging exact steady states from direct numerical simulations of chaotic flow, we show, for the first time, a robust connec…
We study experimentally temperature fluctuations in stably stratified forced turbulence in air flow. In the experiments with an imposed vertical temperature gradient, the turbulence is produced by two oscillating grids located nearby the side walls of the chamber. Particle Image Velocimetry is used to determine the turbulent and mean velocity fields, and a specially designed temperature probe with sensitive thermocouples is employed to measure the temperature field. We found that the ratio $\big[(\ell_x \nabla_x \bar{T})^2 + (\ell_y \nabla_y \bar{T})^2 + (\ell_z \nabla_z \bar{T})^2\big] / <θ^2…
A Fourier/Modal-Spectral-Element Method for the Simulation of High-Reynolds Number Incompressible Stratified Flows in Domains with a Single Non-Periodic Direction
We consider small oscillations of micro-particles and gaseous bubbles in viscous fluid around equilibrium states under the action of a sinusoidal external force. Exact solutions to the governing integro-differential equations containing both Stokes and memory-integral drag forces are obtained. The main aim of this study is to clarify the influence of the memory-integral drag force on the resonance characteristics of oscillating particles or gaseous bubbles in a viscous fluid at small Reynolds numbers. The resonant curves (amplitude versus frequency of external force), as well as phase-frequenc…
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is very accurate however, the computational cost increases significantly with the increase in Reynolds number. On the other hand, we have the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) method for simulating turbulent flows, which needs less computational power. Turbulence models based on linear eddy viscosity models (LEVM) in the RANS method, which use a linear stress-strain rate relationship for modelling the Reynolds stress tensor do not perform well for complex flows \cite{shih1995new} . In this work, we intend to study the performance of non linear eddy viscos…
We are investigating numerically the non-linear behavior of a space-periodic MHD system with ABC forcing. Most computations are performed for magnetic Reynolds numbers increasing from 0 to 60 and a fixed kinematic Reynolds number, small enough for the trivial solution with a zero magnetic field to be stable to velocity perturbations. At the critical magnetic Reynolds number for the onset of instability of the trivial solution the dominant eigenvalue of the kinematic dynamo problem is real. In agreement with the bifurcation theory new steady states with non-vanishing magnetic field appear in th…
Stratified flows forced by internal waves similar to those obtained in the Coriolis platform (LEGI, Grenoble, France) \cite{Savaro2020} are studied by pseudospectral triply-periodic simulations. The experimental forcing mechanism consisting in large oscillating vertical panels is mimicked by a penalization method. The analysis of temporal and spatiotemporal spectra reveals that the flow for the strongest forcing in the experiments is composed of two superposed large and quasi-steady horizontal vortices, of internal waves in box modes and of much weaker waves outside the modes. Spatial spectra …
Buoyant shear layers are encountered in many engineering and environmental applications and have been studied by researchers in the context of experiments and modeling for decades. Often, these flows have high Reynolds and Richardson numbers, and this leads to significant/intractable space-time resolution requirements for DNS or LES modeling. On the other hand, many of the important physical mechanisms in these systems, such as stress anisotropy, wake stabilization, and regime transition, inherently render eddy viscosity-based RANS modeling inappropriate. Accordingly, we pursue second-moment c…
We study the experimental properties of exchange flows in a stratified inclined duct (SID), which are simultaneously turbulent, strongly stratified by a mean vertical density gradient, driven by a mean vertical shear, and continuously forced by gravity. We focus on the core shear layer away from the duct walls, where these flows are excellent experimentally-realisable approximations of canonical hyperbolic-tangent stratified shear layers, whose forcing allows mean and turbulent properties to reach quasi steady states. We analyse state-of-the-art data sets of the time-resolved density and veloc…
We present a study of spectral laws for helical turbulence in the presence of solid body rotation up to Reynolds numbers Re~1*10^5 and down to Rossby numbers Ro~3*10^-3. The forcing function is a fully helical flow that can also be viewed as mimicking the effect of atmospheric convective motions. We test in the helical case variants of a model developed previously (Baerenzung et al. 2008a) against direct numerical simulations (DNS), using data from a run on a grid of 15363 points; we also contrast its efficiency against a spectral Large Eddy Simulation (LES) (Chollet and Lesieur 1981) as well …
In order to better understand deviations from equilibrium in turbulent flows, it is meaningful to characterize the dynamics rather than the statistics of turbulence. To this end, the Lyapunov theory provides a useful description of turbulence through the study of the perturbation dynamics. In this work, the Lyapunov spectrum of forced homogeneous isotropic turbulent flows is computed. Using the Lyapunov exponents of a flow at different Reynolds numbers, the scaling of the dimension of the chaotic attractor for a three-dimensional homogeneous isotropic flow (HIT) is obtained for the first time …

A model for the Reynolds number dependence of the dimensionless dissipation rate $C_{\varepsilon}$ was derived from the dimensionless Kármán-Howarth equation, resulting in $C_{\varepsilon}=C_{\varepsilon, \infty} + C/R_L + O(1/R_L^2)$, where $R_L$ is the integral scale Reynolds number. The coefficients $C$ and $C_{\varepsilon,\infty}$ arise from asymptotic expansions of the dimensionless second- and third-order structure functions. This theoretical work was supplemented by direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of forced isotropic turbulence for integral scale Reynolds numbers up to $R_L=5875$ ($…
We consider the dynamics of a vertically stratified, horizontally-forced Kolmogorov flow. Motivated by astrophysical systems where the Prandtl number is often asymptotically small, our focus is the little-studied limit of high Reynolds number but low Péclet number (which is defined to be the product of the Reynolds number and the Prandtl number). Through a linear stability analysis, we demonstrate that the stability of two-dimensional modes to infinitesimal perturbations is independent of the stratification, whilst three-dimensional modes are always unstable in the limit of strong stratificati…
We perform direct numerical simulations of an unstably stratified turbulent channel flow to address the effects of buoyancy on the boundary layer dynamics and mean field quantities. We systematically span a range of parameters in the space of friction Reynolds number ($Re_τ$) and Rayleigh number ($Ra$). Our focus is on deviations from the logarithmic law of the wall due to buoyant motion. The effects of convection in the relevant ranges are discussed providing measurements of mean profiles of velocity, temperature and Reynolds stresses as well as of the friction coefficient. A phenomenological…
We demonstrate an unexpected connection between isotropic turbulence and wall-bounded shear flows. We perform direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence forced at large scales at moderate Reynolds numbers and observe sudden transitions from a chaotic dynamics to a spatially simple flow, analogous to the laminar state in wall bounded shear flows. We find that the survival probabilities of turbulence are exponential and the typical lifetimes increase superexponentially with the Reynolds number. Our results suggest that both isotropic turbulence and wall-bounded shear flows qualitativel…
The interaction of trailing and leading vortex structures in low Reynolds number forced (varicose) jet with coflow is studied using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), where we report the dynamics of these vortices for a range of varying parameters. In a circular forced jet with Strouhal number 0.2, continuous formation of these vortices is observed which undergo pairing, tearing and disintegration. The forced jet is analyzed for varying frequency of forced perturbations, coflow temperature, turbulence intensity, momentum thickness, coflow intensity and Reynolds number at a constant forcing amp…
Imbibition, the displacement of a nonwetting fluid by a wetting fluid, plays a central role in diverse energy, environmental, and industrial processes. While this process is typically studied in homogeneous porous media with uniform permeabilities, in many cases, the media have multiple parallel strata of different permeabilities. How such stratification impacts the fluid dynamics of imbibition, as well as the fluid saturation after the wetting fluid breaks through to the end of a given medium, is poorly understood. We address this gap in knowledge by developing an analytical model of imbibiti…
This work presents numerical results on the transport of heat and chemical species by shear-induced turbulence in strongly stratified but thermally diffusive environments. The shear instabilities driven in this regime are sometimes called "secular" shear instabilities, and can take place even when the gradient Richardson number of the flow (the square of the ratio of the buoyancy frequency to the shearing rate) is large, provided the Péclet number (the ratio of the thermal diffusion timescale to the turnover timescale of the turbulent eddies) is small. We have identified a set of simple criter…
A mean-field theory of differential rotation in a density stratified turbulent convection has been developed. This theory is based on a combined effect of the turbulent heat flux and anisotropy of turbulent convection on the Reynolds stress. A coupled system of dynamical budget equations consisting in the equations for the Reynolds stress, the entropy fluctuations and the turbulent heat flux has been solved. To close the system of these equations, the spectral tau approach which is valid for large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, has been applied. The adopted model of the background turbulent conv…
According to field observations, the atmospheric boundary layer is usually unstably stratified before a dust and sandstorm, the particle-laden turbulent gravity current with an extremely high Reynolds number. In this paper, an inviscid model is built to study the mechanism governing the slumping phase of gravity current, and it is shown that the dimensionless current front speed, the Froude number, decreases when the current fluid or the ambient medium or both fluids are unstably stratified. In spite of the density interface mixing, the relation between the front speed and the front height des…
We study a new type of large-scale instability, which arises in obliquely rotating stratified electroconductive fluid with an external uniform magnetic field and a small-scale external force having zero helicity. This force gives rise to small-scale oscillations of the velocity with a small Reynolds number. Using the method of multi-scale asymptotic expansions there are obtained nonlinear equations for vortex and magnetic perturbations in the third order in Reynolds number. Studied is the linear stage of magneto-vortex dynamo caused by instabilities of $α$-effect type. Stationary solutions for…

We present numerical investigations into three principal properties of the small-scale dynamo in stably stratified turbulence: the onset criterion, the growth rate, and the nature of the magnetic field anisotropy in the kinematic regime. The results suggest that all three dynamo properties are controlled by the scale separation between the Ozmidov scale and the viscous or resistive scale. In addition to the critical magnetic Reynolds number, this allows for the definition of critical buoyancy and magnetic buoyancy Reynolds numbers for stratified small-scale dynamo onset in the high and low mag…
Shear-induced vertical mixing in a stratified flow is a key ingredient of thermohaline circulation. We experimentally determine the vertical flux of momentum and density of a forced gravity current using high-resolution velocity and density measurements. A constant eddy viscosity model provides a poor description of the physics of mixing, but a Prandtl mixing length model relating momentum and density fluxes to mean velocity and density gradients works well. For $<Ri_g > \approx 0.08$ and $Re_λ\approx 100$, the mixing lengths are fairly constant, about the same magnitude, comparable to the tur…

The presence of stratified layer in atmosphere and ocean leads to buoyant vertical motions, commonly referred to as plumes. It is important to study the mixing dynamics of a plume at a local scale in order to model their evolution and growth. Such a characterization requires measuring the velocity and density of the mixing fluids simultaneously. Here, we present the results of a buoyant plume propagating in a linearly stratified medium with a density difference of 0.5%, thus yielding a buoyancy frequency of N=0.15 s^{-1}. To understand the plume behaviour, statistics such as centerline and axi…
Inertial particles in stably stratified flows play a fundamental role in geophysics, from the dynamics of nutrients in the ocean to the dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere. We consider the Maxey-Riley equation for small neutrally buoyant inertial particles in the Boussinesq approximation, and discuss its limits of validity. We show that particles behave as forced damped oscillators, with different regimes depending on the particles Stokes number and the fluid Brunt-Väisälä frequency. Using direct numerical simulations we study the particles dynamics and we show that small neutrally buoy…
Small-scale dynamo action is often held responsible for the generation of quiet-Sun magnetic fields. We aim to determine the excitation conditions and saturation level of small-scale dynamos in non-rotating turbulent convection at low magnetic Prandtl numbers. We use high resolution direct numerical simulations of weakly stratified turbulent convection. We find that the critical magnetic Reynolds number for dynamo excitation increases as the magnetic Prandtl number is decreased, which might suggest that small-scale dynamo action is not automatically evident in bodies with small magnetic Prandt…
We study entrainment in dry thermals in neutrally and unstably stratified ambients, and moist thermals in dry-neutrally stratified ambients using direct numerical simulations (DNS). We find, in agreement with results of Lecoanet and Jeevanjee \tb{[J. Atmos. Sci. 76(12), 3785-3801, (2019)]} that turbulence plays a minor role in entrainment in dry thermals in a neutral ambient for Reynolds numbers $Re \lesssim 10^4$. We then show that the net entrainment rate increases when the buoyancy of the thermals increases, either by condensation heating or because of an unstably stratified ambient. This i…
We discuss a mean-field theory of generation of large-scale vorticity in a rotating density stratified developed turbulence with inhomogeneous kinetic helicity. We show that the large-scale nonuniform flow is produced due to ether a combined action of a density stratified rotating turbulence and uniform kinetic helicity or a combined effect of a rotating incompressible turbulence and inhomogeneous kinetic helicity. These effects result in the formation of a large-scale shear, and in turn its interaction with the small-scale turbulence causes an excitation of the large-scale instability (known …
To develop an understanding of recent experiments on the turbulence-induced melting of a periodic array of vortices in a thin fluid film, we perform a direct numerical simulation of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations forced such that, at low Reynolds numbers, the steady state of the film is a square lattice of vortices. We find that, as we increase the Reynolds number, this lattice undergoes a series of nonequilibrium phase transitions, first to a crystal with a different reciprocal lattice and then to a sequence of crystals that oscillate in time. Initially the temporal oscillations …
Transonic buffet is commonly associated with self-sustained flow unsteadiness involving shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction over aerofoils and wings. The phenomenon has been classified as either laminar or turbulent based on the state of the boundary layer immediately upstream of the shock foot and distinct mechanisms for the two types have been suggested. The turbulent case is known to be associated with a global linear instability. Herein, large-eddy simulations are used for the first time to make direct comparisons of the two types by examining free- and forced-transition conditions. Corr…
In this paper, we find a new large scale instability displayed by a stratified rotating flow in forced turbu- lence. The turbulence is generated by a small scale external force at low Reynolds number. The theory is built on the rigorous asymptotic method of multi-scale development. There is no other special constraint concerning the force. In previous papers, the force was either helical or violating parity invariance. The nonlinear equations for the instability are obtained at the third order of the perturbation theory. In this article, we explain a detailed study of the linear stage of the i…
We study forced, rapildy rotating and stably stratified turbulence in an elongated domain using an asymptotic expansion at simultaneously low Rossby number $Ro\ll1$ and large domain height compared to the energy injection scale, $h=H/\ell_{in}\gg1$. The resulting equations depend on the parameter $λ=(h Ro )^{-1}$ and the Froude number $Fr$. An extensive set of direct numerical simulations (DNS) is performed to explore the parameter space $(λ,Fr)$. We show that a forward energy cascade occurs in one region of this space, and a split energy cascade outside it. At weak stratification (large $Fr$)…
From the energy balance in wavenumber space expressed by the Lin equation, we derive a new form for the local Karman-Howarth equation for forced isotropic turbulence in real space. This equation is then cast into a dimensionless form, from which a combined analytical and numerical study leads us to deduce a new model for the scale-independent nondimensional dissipation rate $\Ceps$, which takes the form $\Ceps = \Cinf + C_L/R_L$, where the asymptotic value $\Cinf$ can be evaluated from the third-order structure function. This is found to fit the numerical data with $\Cinf = 0.47 \pm 0.01$ and …
In the presence of strong density stratification, hydromagnetic turbulence attains qualitatively new properties: the formation of magnetic flux concentrations. We review here the theoretical foundations of this mechanism in terms of what is now called the negative effective magnetic pressure instability. We also present direct numerical simulations of forced turbulence in strongly stratified layers and discuss the qualitative and quantitative similarities with corresponding mean-field simulations. Finally, the relevance to sunspot formation is discussed.
In this paper, we study a new type of large-scale instability in obliquely rotating stratified fluids with small scale non-helical turbulence. The small-scale turbulence is generated by the external force with zero helicity and low Reynolds number. The theory uses the method of multiscale asymptotic developments. The nonlinear equations for large scale motions are obtained in the third order of the perturbation theory. In this paper, we consider the linear instability and the stationary nonlinear modes. We obtain solutions in the form of nonlinear Beltrami waves and localized vortex structures…
We perform numerical simulations of decaying rotating stratified turbulence and show, in the Boussinesq framework, that helicity (velocity-vorticity correlation), as observed in super-cell storms and hurricanes, is spontaneously created due to an interplay between buoyancy and rotation common to large-scale atmospheric and oceanic flows. Helicity emerges from the joint action of eddies and of inertia-gravity waves (with inertia and gravity with respective associated frequencies $f$ and $N$), and it occurs when the waves are sufficiently strong. For $N/f < 3$ the amount of helicity produced is …
We show that when a non-wetting fluid drains a stratified porous medium at sufficiently small capillary numbers Ca, it flows only through the coarsest stratum of the medium; by contrast, above a threshold Ca, the non-wetting fluid is also forced laterally, into part of the adjacent, finer strata. The spatial extent of this partial invasion increases with Ca. We quantitatively understand this behavior by balancing the stratum-scale viscous pressure driving the flow with the capillary pressure required to invade individual pores. Because geological formations are frequently stratified, we antici…
The decay of kinetic helicity is studied in numerical models of forced turbulence using either an externally imposed forcing function as an inhomogeneous term in the equations or, alternatively, a term linear in the velocity giving rise to a linear instability. The externally imposed forcing function injects energy at the largest scales, giving rise to a turbulent inertial range with nearly constant energy flux while for linearly forced turbulence the spectral energy is maximum near the dissipation wavenumber. Kinetic helicity is injected once a statistically steady state is reached, but it is…
We extend the scaling relations of stably stratified turbulence from the geophysical regime of unity Prandtl number to the astrophysical regime of extremely small Prandtl number applicable to stably stratified regions of stars and gas giants. A transition to a new turbulent regime is found to occur when the Prandtl number drops below the inverse of the buoyancy Reynolds number, i.e. $PrRb<1$, which signals a shift of the dominant balance in the buoyancy equation. Application of critical balance arguments then derives new predictions for the anisotropic energy spectrum and dominant balance of t…
Wakes of towed and self-propelled bodies in stratified fluids are significantly different from non-stratified wakes. Long time effects of stratification on the development of the wakes of bluff bodies moving at constant speed are well known. In this experimental study we demonstrate how buoyancy affects the initial growth of vortices developing in the wake of a hydrofoil accelerating from rest. Particle image velocimetry measurements were applied to characterize the wake evolution behind a NACA 0015 hydrofoil accelerating in water and for low Reynolds number and relatively strong and stably st…
