We are investigating numerically the non-linear behavior of a space-periodic MHD system with ABC forcing. Most computations are performed for magnetic Reynolds numbers increasing from 0 to 60 and a fixed kinematic Reynolds number, small enough for the trivial solution with a zero magnetic field to be stable to velocity perturbations. At the critical magnetic Reynolds number for the onset of instability of the trivial solution the dominant eigenvalue of the kinematic dynamo problem is real. In agreement with the bifurcation theory new steady states with non-vanishing magnetic field appear in this bifurcation. Subsequent bifurcations are investigated. A regime is detected, where chaotic variations of the magnetic field orientation (analogous to magnetic field reversals) are observed in the temporal evolution of the system.
The ABC flow is a prototype for fast dynamo action, essential to the origin of magnetic field in large astrophysical objects. Probably the most studied configuration is the classical 1:1:1 flow. We investigate its dynamo properties varying the magnetic Reynolds number Rm. We identify two kinks in the growth rate, which correspond respectively to an eigenvalue crossing and to an eigenvalue coalescence. The dominant eigenvalue becomes purely real for a finite value of the control parameter. Finally we show that even for Rm = 25000, the dominant eigenvalue has not yet reached an asymptotic behavi…
The growth rate of the dynamo instability as a function of the magnetic Reynolds number Rm is investigated by means of numerical simulations for the family of the ABC flows and for 2 different forcing scales. For the ABC flows that are driven at the largest available length scale it is found that as the magnetic Reynolds number is increased: (a) The flow that results first in dynamo is the 2.5D flow for which A=B and C=0 (and all permutations). (b) The second type of flow that results in dynamo is the one for which A=B=2C/5 (and permutations). (c) The most symmetric flow A=B=C is the third typ…
The ABC flow was originally introduced by Arnol'd to investigate Lagrangian chaos. It soon became the prototype example to illustrate magnetic-field amplification via fast dynamo action, i.e. dynamo action exhibiting magnetic-field amplification on a typical timescale independent of the electrical resistivity of the medium. Even though this flow is the most classical example for this important class of dynamos (with application to large-scale astrophysical objects), it was recently pointed out (Bouya Ismaël and Dormy Emmanuel, Phys. Fluids, 25 (2013) 037103) that the fast dynamo nature of this…
Turbulent dynamo theories have faced difficulties in obtaining evolution of large-scale magnetic fields on short dynamical time-scales due to the constraint imposed by magnetic helicity balance. This has critical implications for understanding the large-scale magnetic field evolution in astrophysical systems like the Sun, stars and galaxies. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) in the past with isotropically forced helical turbulence have shown that large-scale dynamo saturation time-scales are dependent on the magnetic Reynolds number (Rm). In this work, we have carried out periodic box DNS of …
We present a high-order numerical study of the dependence of the dynamo onset on different electromagnetic boundary conditions, in convecting Boussinesq flows forced by a temperature gradient. Perfectly conducting boundaries, vacuum, and mixed electromagnetic boundary conditions are considered, using a method that treats fields and boundary conditions with close to spectral accuracy. Having one or two conducting boundaries greatly facilitates dynamo action. For the mixed case it is shown that the critical magnetic Reynolds number becomes independent of the Rayleigh number, Ra, for sufficiently…
It is shown, using results of direct numerical simulations, that the spontaneous breaking of local reflectional symmetry (and corresponding localized kinetic and magnetic helicities) can dominate chaotic dynamics of the small-scale MHD dynamo in the Rayleigh-B{é}nard convection, in kinetically forced flows under strong stratification, in the near-surface solar convection, and in kinetically forced flows at large magnetic Reynolds numbers. The notions of deterministic and helical distributed chaos have been used for this purpose. The coexistence of large- and small-scale dynamo mechanisms and a…
The role of turbulence in current generation and self-excitation of magnetic fields has been studied in the geometry of a mechanically driven, spherical dynamo experiment, using a three dimensional numerical computation. A simple impeller model drives a flow which can generate a growing magnetic field, depending upon the magnetic Reynolds number, Rm, and the fluid Reynolds number. When the flow is laminar, the dynamo transition is governed by a simple threshold in Rm, above which a growing magnetic eigenmode is observed. The eigenmode is primarily a dipole field tranverse to axis of symmetry o…
We demonstrate that there is an optimal forcing length scale for low Prandtl number dynamo flows, that can significantly reduce the required energy injection rate. The investigation is based on simulations of the induction equation in a periodic box of size $2πL$. The flows considered are turbulent ABC flows forced at different forcing wavenumbers $k_f$ simulated using a subgrid turbulent model. The critical magnetic Reynolds number $Rm_c^T$ decreases as the forcing wavenumber $k_f$ increases from the smallest allowed $k_{min}=1/L$. At large $k_f$ on the other hand, $Rm_c^T$ increases with the…
For a three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma the dynamo action with ABC flow as initial condition has been studied. The study delineates crucial parameter that gives a transition from coherent nonlinear oscillation to dynamo. Further, for both kinematic and dynamic models at magnetic Prandtl number equal to unity the dynamo action is studied for driven ABC flows. The magnetic resistivity has been chosen at a value where the fast dynamo occurs and the growth rate shows no further variation with the change of magnetic Reynold's number. The exponent of growth of magnetic energy increa…
The effect of the nutation angle on the flow inside a precessing cylinder is experimentally explored and compared with numerical simulations. The focus is laid on the typical breakdown of the directly forced m=1 Kelvin mode for increasing precession ratio (Poincaré number), and the accompanying transition between a laminar and turbulent flow. Compared to the reference case with a 90° nutation angle, prograde rotation leads to an earlier breakdown, while in the retrograde case the forced mode continues to exist also for higher Poincaré numbers. Depending largely on the occurrence and intensity …
We report an experimental investigation on the influence of an external magnetic field on forced 3D turbulence of liquid gallium in a closed vessel. We observe an exponential damping of the turbulent velocity fluctuations as a function of the interaction parameter N (ratio of Lorentz force over inertial terms of the Navier-Stokes equation). The flow structures develop some anisotropy but do not become bidimensional. From a dynamical viewpoint, the damping first occurs homogeneously over the whole spectrum of frequencies. For larger values of N, a very strong additional damping occurs at the hi…
To elucidate the influence of shear flow on the generation of magnetic field (the dynamo effect), we study the kinematic limit where the magnetic field does not backreact on the velocity field. By non-perturbatively incorporating the effect of shear in a helically forced turbulence, we show that turbulence intensity and turbulent transport coefficients (turbulent viscosity, $α$ and $β$ effect) are enhanced by a weak shear while strongly suppressed for strong shear. In particular, $β$ is shown to be much more strongly suppressed than $α$ effect. We discuss its important implications for dynamo …
An investigation of the dynamo instability close to the threshold produced by an ABC forced flow is presented. We focus on the on-off intermittency behavior of the dynamo and the counter-effect of the Lorentz force in the non-linear stage of the dynamo. The Lorentz force drastically alters the statistics of the turbulent fluctuations of the flow and reduces their amplitude. As a result much longer burst (on-phases) are observed than what is expected based on the amplitude of the fluctuations in the kinematic regime of the dynamo. For large Reynolds numbers, the duration time of the ``On'' phas…
The dynamo instability is investigated in the limit of infinite magnetic Prandtl number. In this limit the fluid is assumed to be very viscous so that the inertial terms can be neglected and the flow is slaved to the forcing. The forcing consist of an external forcing function that drives the dynamo flow and the resulting Lorentz force caused by the back reaction of the magnetic field. The flows under investigation are the Archontis flow, and the ABC flow forced at two different scales. The investigation covers roughly three orders of magnitude of the magnetic Reynolds number above onset. All …
We present results from consistent dynamo simulations, where the electrically conducting and incompressible flow inside a cylinder vessel is forced by moving impellers numerically implemented by a penalization method. The numerical scheme models jumps of magnetic permeability for the solid impellers, resembling various configurations tested experimentally in the von-Karman Sodium experiment. The most striking experimental observations are reproduced in our set of simulations. In particular, we report on the existence of an axisymmetric dynamo mode, self-consistently generated when the magnetic…
We present direct numerical simulations of dynamo action in a forced Roberts flow. The behavior of the dynamo is followed as the mechanical Reynolds number is increased, starting from the laminar case until a turbulent regime is reached. The critical magnetic Reynolds for dynamo action is found, and in the turbulent flow it is observed to be nearly independent on the magnetic Prandtl number in the range from 0.3 to 0.1. Also the dependence of this threshold with the amount of mechanical helicity in the flow is studied. For the different regimes found, the configuration of the magnetic and velo…
Hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic numerical studies of a mechanically forced two-vortex flow inside a sphere are reported. The simulations are performed in the intermediate regime between the laminar flow and developed turbulence where a hydrodynamic instability is found to generate internal waves with a characteristic m=2 zonal wave number. It is shown that this time-periodic flow acts as a dynamo although snapshots of the flow as well as the mean flow are not dynamos. The magnetic fields' growth rate exhibits resonance effects depending on the wave frequency. Furthermore, a cyclic self-ki…
We present results from three-dimensional non-linear hydrodynamic simulations of a precession driven flow in cylindrical geometry. The simulations are motivated by a dynamo experiment currently under development at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) in which the possibility of generating a magnetohydrodynamic dynamo will be investigated in a cylinder filled with liquid sodium and simultaneously rotating around two axes. In this study, we focus on the emergence of non-axisymmetric time-dependent flow structures in terms of inertial waves which - in cylindrical geometry - form so-called…
We present a numerical study of the magnetic field generated by an axisymmetrically forced flow in a spherical domain. At small enough Reynolds number, Re, the flow is axisymmetric and generates an equatorial dipole above a critical magnetic Reynolds number Rmc . The magnetic field thus breaks axisymmetry, in agreement with Cowling's theorem. This structure of the magnetic field is however replaced by a dominant axial dipole when Re is larger and allows non axisymmetric fluctuations in the flow. We show here that even in the absence of such fluctuations, an axial dipole can also be generated, …
Magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) dynamos emerge in many different astrophysical situations where turbulence is present, but the interaction between large-scale (LSD) and small-scale dynamos (SSD) is not fully understood. We performed a systematic study of turbulent dynamos driven by isotropic forcing in isothermal MHD with magnetic Prandtl number of unity, focusing on the exponential growth stage. Both helical and non-helical forcing was employed to separate the effects of LSD and SSD in a periodic domain. Reynolds numbers (Rm) up to $\approx 250$ were examined and multiple resolutions used for con…
We study the transfer of energy between different scales for forced three-dimensional MHD turbulent flows in the kinematic dynamo regime. Two different forces are examined: a non-helical Taylor Green flow with magnetic Prandtl number P_M=0.4, and a helical ABC flow with P_M=1. This analysis allows us to examine which scales of the velocity flow are responsible for dynamo action, and identify which scales of the magnetic field receive energy directly from the velocity field and which scales receive magnetic energy through the cascade of the magnetic field from large to small scales. Our results…
This paper considers magnetic field generation by a fluid flow in a system referred to as the Archontis dynamo: a steady nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) state is driven by a prescribed body force. The field and flow become almost equal and dissipation is concentrated in cigar-like structures centred on straight-line separatrices. Numerical scaling laws for energy and dissipation are given that extend previous calculations to smaller diffusivities. The symmetries of the dynamo are set out, together with their implications for the structure of field and flow along the separatrices. The scali…
The evolution of a Taylor-Green forced magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) system showing dynamo activity is analyzed via direct numerical simulations. The statistical properties of the velocity and magnetic field in Eulerian coordinates and along trajectories of fluid elements (Lagrangian coordinates) are found to change between the kinematic, non-linear and saturated regime. Fluid element (tracer) trajectories change from chaotic quasi-isotropic (kinematic phase) to mean magnetic field aligned (saturated phase). The probability density functions (PDFs) of the magnetic field change from strongly non-Ga…
Hydromagnetic dynamo theory provides the prevailing theoretical description for the origin of magnetic fields in the universe. Here we consider the problem of kinematic, small-scale dynamo action driven by a random, incompressible, non-helical, homogeneous and isotropic flow. In the Kazantsev dynamo model the statistics of the driving flow are assumed to be instantaneously correlated in time. Here we compare the results of the model with the dynamo properties of a simulated flow that has equivalent spatial characteristics as the Kazantsev flow but different temporal statistics. In particular, …
Small-scale dynamos are ubiquitous in a broad range of turbulent flows with large-scale shear, ranging from solar and galactic magnetism to accretion disks, cosmology and structure formation. Using high-resolution direct numerical simulations we show that in non-helically forced turbulence with zero mean magnetic field, large-scale shear supports small-scale dynamo action, i.e., the dynamo growth rate increases with shear and shear enhances or even produces turbulence, which, in turn, further increases the dynamo growth rate. When the production rates of turbulent kinetic energy due to shear a…
This paper aims to numerically verify the large Reynolds number asymptotic theory of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) flows proposed in the companion paper Deguchi (2019). To avoid any complexity associated with the chaotic nature of turbulence and flow geometry, nonlinear steady solutions of the viscous-resistive magneto-hydrodynamic equations in plane Couette flow have been utilised. Two classes of nonlinear MHD states, which convert kinematic energy to magnetic energy effectively, have been determined. The first class of nonlinear states can be obtained when a small spanwise uniform magnetic fiel…
The presence of large scale magnetic fields in nature is often attributed to the inverse cascade of magnetic helicity driven by turbulent helical dynamos. In this work we show that in turbulent helical dynamos, the inverse flux of magnetic helicity towards the large scales $Π_{\mathcal{H}}$ is bounded by $|Π_{\mathcal{H}}|\le c εk_η^{-1}$, where $ε$ is the energy injection rate, $k_η$ is the Kolmogorov magnetic dissipation wavenumber and $c$ an order one constant. Assuming the classical isotropic turbulence scaling, the inverse flux of magnetic helicity $Π_{\mathcal{H}}$ decreases at least as …
The standard magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) description of the plasma in the hot, magnetized gas of the intra-cluster (ICM) medium is not adequate because it is weakly collisional. In such collisionless magnetized gas, the microscopic velocity distribution of the particles is not isotropic, giving rise to kinetic effects on the dynamical scales. These kinetic effects could be important in understanding the turbulence, as so as the amplification and maintenance of the magnetic fields in the ICM. It is possible to formulate fluid models for collisonless or weakly collisional gas by introducing modifi…
The $Λ$ effect describes a rotation-induced non-diffusive contribution to the Reynolds stress. It is commonly held responsible for maintaining the observed differential rotation of the Sun and other late-type stars. Here the sensitivity of the $Λ$ effect to small-scale magnetic fields and compressibility is studied by means of forced turbulence simulations either with anisotropic forcing in fully periodic cubes or in density-stratified domains with isotropic forcing. Effects of small-scale magnetic fields are studied in cases where the magnetic fields are self-consistently generated by a small…
We study the effect of large-scale spectral forcing on the scale-dependent anisotropy of the velocity field in direct numerical simulations of homogeneous incompressible turbulence. Two forcing methods are considered: the steady ABC single wavenumber scheme and the unsteady non-helical or helical Euler scheme. The results are also compared with high resolution data obtained with the negative viscosity scheme. A fine-grained characterization of anisotropy, consisting in measuring some quantities related to the two-point velocity correlations, is used: we perform a modal decomposition of the spe…
In this study we present a compressible test-field method (CTFM) for computing $α$ effect and turbulent magnetic diffusivity tensors, as well as those relevant for mean ponderomotive force and mass source, applied to the full MHD equations. We describe the theoretical background of the method, and compare it to the quasi-kinematic test-field method, and to the previously studied variant working in simplified MHD (SMHD). We present several test cases using velocity and magnetic fields of the Roberts geometry, and also compare with the imposed-field method. We show that, for moderate imposed fie…
We perform kinematic simulations of dynamo action driven by a helical small scale flow of a conducting fluid in order to deduce mean-field properties of the combined induction action of small scale eddies. We examine two different flow patterns in the style of the G.O. Roberts flow but with a mean vertical component and with internal fixtures that are modelled by regions with vanishing flow. These fixtures represent either rods that lie in the center of individual eddies, or internal dividing walls that provide a separation of the eddies from each other. The fixtures can be made of magnetic ma…
The project DRESDYN (DREsden Sodium facility for DYNamo and thermohydraulic studies) conducted at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) provides a new platform for a variety of liquid sodium experiments devoted to problems of geo- and astrophysical magnetohydrodynamics. The most ambitious experiment within this project is a precession driven dynamo experiment that currently is under construction. It consists of a cylinder filled with liquid sodium that simultaneously rotates around two axes. The experiment is motivated by the idea of a precession-driven flow as a complementary energy sou…
We study the inverse cascade of magnetic helicity in conducting fluids by investigating the detailed transfer of helicity between different spherical shells in Fourier space in direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Two different numerical simulations are used, one where the system is forced with an electromotive force in the induction equation, and one in which the system is forced mechanically with an ABC flow and the magnetic field is solely sustained by a dynamo action. The magnetic helicity cascade at the initial stages of both simulations is observe…
We build on the formulation developed in Sridhar & Singh (JFM, 664, 265, 2010), and present a theory of the \emph{shear dynamo problem} for small magnetic and fluid Reynolds numbers, but for arbitrary values of the shear parameter. Specializing to the case of a mean magnetic field that is slowly varying in time, explicit expressions for the transport coefficients, $α_{il}$ and $η_{iml}$, are derived. We prove that, when the velocity field is non helical, the transport coefficient $α_{il}$ vanishes. We then consider forced, stochastic dynamics for the incompressible velocity field at low Reynol…
Recent MHD dynamo simulations for magnetic Prandtl number $>1$ demonstrate that when MHD turbulence is forced with sufficient kinetic helicity, the saturated magnetic energy spectrum evolves from having a single peak below the forcing scale to become doubly peaked with one peak at the system (=largest) scale and one at the forcing scale. The system scale field growth is well modeled by a recent nonlinear two-scale nonlinear helical dynamo theory in which the system and forcing scales carry magnetic helicity of opposite sign. But a two-scale theory cannot model the shift of the small-scale peak…
Dynamo action in a fully helical Beltrami (ABC) flow is studied using both direct numerical simulations and subgrid modeling. Sufficient scale separation is given in order to allow for large-scale magnetic energy build-up. Growth of magnetic energy obtains down to a magnetic Prandtl number PM=RM/RV close to 0.005, where RV and RM are the kinetic and magnetic Reynolds numbers. The critical magnetic Reynolds number for dynamo action RMc seems to saturate at values close to 20. Detailed studies of the dependence of the amplitude of the saturated magnetic energy with PM are presented. In order to …
Investigations of the inverse cascade of magnetic helicity are conducted with pseudospectral, three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of forced and decaying incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. The high-resolution simulations which allow for the necessary scale-separation show that the observed self-similar scaling behavior of magnetic helicity and related quantities can only be understood by taking the full nonlinear interplay of velocity and magnetic fluctuations into account. With the help of the eddy-damped quasi-normal Markovian approximation a probably universal relation…
We explore the effect of the magnetic Prandtl number Pm on energy and dissipation in fully resolved direct numerical simulations of steady-state, mechanically forced homogeneous magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in the range Pm = 1/32 to 32. We compare the spectra and show that if the simulations are not fully resolved, the steepness of the scaling of the kinetic-to-magnetic dissipation ratio with Pm is overestimated. We also present results of decaying turbulence with helical and nonhelical magnetic fields, where we find nonhelical reverse spectral transfer for Pm < 1. The results of this system…
Magnetars are highly magnetized neutron stars whose magnetic dipole ranges from $10^{14}$ to $10^{15}$ G. The MRI is considered to be a promising mechanism to amplify the magnetic field in fast-rotating protoneutron stars and form magnetars. This scenario is supported by many local studies showing that magnetic fields could be amplified by the MRI on small scales. However, the efficiency of the MRI at generating a dipole field is still unknown. To answer this question, we study the MRI dynamo in an idealized global model of a fast rotating protoneutron star with differential rotation. We perfo…
