A numerical study of the magnetic induction equation has been performed on von Karman type flows. These flows are generated by two co-axial counter-rotating propellers in cylindrical containers. Such devices are currently used in the von Karman sodium (VKS) experiment designed to study dynamo action in an unconstrained flow. The mean velocity fields have been measured for different configurations and are introduced in a periodic cylindrical kinematic dynamo code. Depending on the driving configuration, on the poloidal to toroidal flow ratio and on the conductivity of boundaries, some flows are observed to sustain growing magnetic fields for magnetic Reynolds numbers accessible to a sodium experiment. The response of the flow to an external magnetic field has also been studied: The results are in excellent agreement with experimental results in the single propeller case but can differ in the two propellers case.
Numerical studies of a kinematic dynamo based on von Karman type flows between two counterrotating disks in a finite cylinder are reported. The flow has been optimized using a water model experiment, varying the driving impellers configuration. A solution leading to dynamo action for the mean flow has been found. This solution may be achieved in VKS2, the new sodium experiment to be performed in Cadarache, France. The optimization process is described and discussed, then the effects of adding a stationary conducting layer around the flow on the threshold, on the shape of the neutral mode and o…
A synthetic fluid dynamo built in the spirit of the Bullard device [E. C. Bullard, Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc., 51, 744 (1955)] is investigated. It is a two-step dynamo in which one process stems from the fluid turbulence, while the other part is an alpha effect achieved by a linear amplification of currents in external coils [M. Bourgoin et al., New J. Phys., 8, 329 (2006)]. Modifications in the forcing are introduced in order to change the dynamics of the flow, and hence the dynamo behavior. Some features, such as on-off intermittency at onset of dynamo action, are very robust. Large scales fluct…
We study magnetohydrodynamics in a von Kármán flow driven by the rotation of impellers made of material with varying electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability. Gallium is the working fluid and magnetic Reynolds numbers of order unity are achieved. We find that specific induction effects arise when the impeller's electric and magnetic characteristics differ from that of the fluid. Implications in regards to the VKS dynamo are discussed.
In this paper, we discuss the usage and implementation of the compressive sensing (CS) for the efficient measurement and analysis of the von Kármán vortices. We consider two different flow fields, the flow fields around a circle and an ellipse. We solve the governing $k-ε$ transport equations numerically in order to model the flow fields around these bodies. Using the time series of the drag, $C_D$, and the lift, $C_L$, coefficients, and their Fourier spectra, we show that compressive sampling can be effectively used to measure and analyze Von Kármán vortices. We discuss the effects of the num…
Studies of magnetic induction in von Kármán swirling flows have so far linked the time-averaged induced magnetic field to the structure of the mean flow. They have evidenced the Omega and Parker mechanism generated respectively by the flow differential rotation and helicity, which underly the Duddley and James \cite{DuddleyJames} dynamos. Using an array of Hall probes we study here the dynamical regime. In the experimental flow, turbulence is fully developed and large fluctuations are observed in the magnetic induction processes. We find that the large scale turbulent fluctuations have differe…
The von Karman flow apparatus produces a highly turbulent flow inside a cylinder vessel driven by two counter-rotating impellers. Over more than two decades, this experiment has become a very classic turbulence tool, studied for a wide range of physical systems by many groups, with incompressible flow, compressible flow, for magnetohydrodynamics and dynamo studies inside liquid metal, for particle tracking purposes, and recently with turbulent super-fluid helium. We present a direct numerical simulation (DNS) version the von Karman flow, forced by two rotating impellers. The cylinder geometry …
We report numerical evidences of the influence of the blades' shape and of their direction of rotation on turbulent flows generated by counter-rotating bladed-disks enclosed in a cylinder, known as the von Kármán swirling flow. We show that, although the mean flows generated by stirrers with straight or curved blades can be topologically similar, turbulence production occurs in different zones. The structure and intensity of the turbulent fluctuating field also varies with the geometry, and retains significant anisotropy. From the direct numerical simulations fields, we analyse the dynamics of…
We apply a new threshold detection method based on the extreme value theory to the von Kármán sodium (VKS) experiment data. The VKS experiment is a successful attempt to get a dynamo magnetic field in a laboratory liquid-metal experiment. We first show that the dynamo threshold is associated to a change of the probability density function of the extreme values of the magnetic field. This method does not require the measurement of response functions from applied external perturbations, and thus provides a simple threshold estimate. We apply our method to different configurations in the VKS expe…
A celebrated universal aspect of wall-bounded turbulent flows is the von Karman log-law-of-the-wall, describing how the mean velocity in the streamwise direction depends on the distance from the wall. Although the log-law is known for more than 75 years, the von Karman constant governing the slope of the log-law was not determined theoretically. In this Letter we show that the von-Karman constant can be estimated from homogeneous turbulent data, i.e. without information from wall-bounded flows.
We study the effect of different boundary conditions on the kinematic dynamo threshold of von Karman type swirling flows in a cylindrical geometry. Using an analytical test flow, we model different boundary conditions: insulating walls all over the flow, effect of sodium at rest on the cylinder side boundary, effect of sodium behind the impellers, effect of impellers or side wall made of a high-magnetic-permeability material. We find that using high-magnetic-permeability boundary conditions decreases the dynamo threshold, the minimum being achieved when they are implemented all over the flow.
The VKS experiment has evidenced dynamo action in a highly turbulent liquid sodium von Kármán flow [R. Monchaux et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 044502 (2007)]. However, the existence and the onset of a dynamo happen to depend on the exact experimental configuration. By performing kinematic dynamo simulations on real flows, we study their influence on dynamo action, in particular the sense of rotation and the presence of an annulus in the shear layer plane. The 3 components of the mean velocity fields are measured in a water prototype for different VKS configurations through Stereoscopic Par…
We present an experimental study of a turbulent von Kármán flow produced in a cylindrical container using two propellers. The mean flow is stationary up to $Re = 10^4$, where a bifurcation takes place. The new regime breaks some symmetries of the problem, and is time-dependent. The axisymmetry is broken by the presence of equatorial vortices with a precession movement, being the velocity of the vortices proportional to the Reynolds number. The reflection symmetry through the equatorial plane is broken, and the shear layer of the mean flow appears displaced from the equator. These two facts app…
We report measurements of the dissipation in the Superfluid Helium high REynold number von Karman flow (SHREK) experiment for different forcing conditions, through a regime of global hysteretic bifurcation. Our macroscopical measurements indicate no noticeable difference between the classical fluid and the superfluid regimes, thereby providing evidence of the same dissipative anomaly and response to asymmetry in fluid and superfluid regime. %In the latter case, A detailed study of the variations of the hysteretic cycle with Reynolds number supports the idea that (i) the stability of the bifurc…
The present study is concerned with the peak acceleration azmax occurring during the water impact of a symmetric wedge. This aspect can be important for design considerations of safe marine vehicles. The water-entry problem is firstly studied numerically using the finite-volume discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the volume-of-fluid method to capture the air-water interface. The choice of the mesh size and time-step is validated by comparison with experimental data of a free fall water-entry of a wedge. The key original contribution of the article concerns the deri…
We study the dynamics of neutrally buoyant particles with diameters varying in the range [1, 45] in Kolmogorov scale units (eta) and Reynolds numbers based on Taylor scale between 580 and 1050. One component of the particles' velocity is measured using extended Laser Doppler Velocimetry at the center of a Von-Karman (VK) flow, acceleration is derived by differentiation. We find that although the particle acceleration variance decreases with increasing their diameter with scaling close to (D/eta)^-2/3, in agreement with previous observations, the characteristic time of acceleration autocorrelat…
We present a detailed study of of a global bifurcation occuring in a turbulent von Kármán swirling flow. In this system, the statistically steady states progressively display hysteretic behaviour when the Reynolds number is increased above the transition to turbulence. We examine in detail this hysteresis using asymmetric forcing conditions --- rotating the impellers at different speeds. For very high Reynolds numbers, we study the sensitivity of the hysteresis cycle --- using complementary Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and global mechanical measurements --- to the forcing nature, imposing …
We have performed numerical simulations of the kinematic induction equation in order to examine the dynamo efficiency of an axisymmetric von-Kármán-like flow subject to time-dependent non-axisymmetric velocity perturbations. The numerical model is based on the setup of the French Von-Kármán-Sodium dynamo (VKS) and on the flow measurements from a model water experiment conducted at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. Our simulations show that the interactions of azimuthally drifting flow perturbations with the fundamental drift of the magnetic eigenmode (caused by the inevitable equat…
We derive the von Kármán-Howarth equation for a full three dimensional incompressible two-fluid plasma. In the long-time limit and for very large Reynolds numbers we obtain the equivalent of the hydrodynamic "four-fifth" law. This exact law predicts the scaling of the third-order two-point correlation functions, and puts a strong constraint on the plasma turbulent dynamics. Finally, we derive a simple expression for the 4/5 law in terms of third-order structure functions, which is appropriate for comparison with in-situ measurements in the solar wind at different spatial ranges.
The axisymmetric flow in an aspect-ratio-one cylinder whose upper and lower bounding disks are maintained at different temperatures and rotate at equal and opposite velocities is investigated. In this combined Rayleigh-Benard/von Karman problem, the imposed temperature gradient is measured by the Rayleigh number Ra and the angular velocity by the Reynolds number Re. Although fluid motion is present as soon as Re is non-zero, a symmetry-breaking transition analogous to the onset of convection takes place at a finite Rayleigh number higher than that for Re=0. For Re<95, the transition is a pitch…

We present a novel moving immersed boundary method (IBM) and employ it in direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the closed-vessel swirling von Karman flow in laminar and turbulent regimes. The IBM extends direct-forcing approaches by leveraging a time integration scheme, that embeds the immersed boundary forcing step within a semi-implicit iterative Crank-Nicolson scheme. The overall method is robust, stable, and yields excellent results in canonical cases with static and moving boundaries. The moving IBM allows us to reproduce the geometry and parameters of the swirling von Karman flow experi…
We experimentally characterize the fluctuations of the non-homogeneous non-isotropic turbulence in an axisymmetric von Kármán flow. We show that these fluctuations satisfy relations analogous to classical Fluctuation-Dissipation Relations (FDRs) in statistical mechanics. We use these relations to measure statistical temperatures of turbulence. The values of these temperatures are found to be dependent on the considered observable as already evidenced in other far from equilibrium systems.
We study the transition from laminar flow to fully developed turbulence for an inertially-driven von Karman flow between two counter-rotating large impellers fitted with curved blades over a wide range of Reynolds number (100 - 1 000 000). The transition is driven by the destabilisation of the azimuthal shear-layer, i.e., Kelvin-Helmholtz instability which exhibits travelling/drifting waves, modulated travelling waves and chaos below the emergence of a turbulent spectrum. A local quantity -the energy of the velocity fluctuations at a given point- and a global quantity -the applied torque- are …
We present the full three-dimensional numerical investigation of the von Karman swirling flow between two parallel plates using the Oldroyd-B model and characterize the onset and development of elastic turbulence. We quantify the flow state with the secondary-flow strength, a measure of the average strength of the velocity fluctuations, and then define an order parameter as the time average of the secondary-flow strength. The order parameter displays a subcritical transition from the laminar to a bistable flow that switches between weakly chaotic flow and elastic turbulence. The transition to …
The water landing of an amphibious aircraft is a complicated problem that can lead to uncomfortable riding situation and structural damage due to large vertical accelerations and the consequent dynamic responses. The problem herein is investigated by solving unsteady incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a standard k-omega turbulence closure model. The theoretical solutions established by the von Karman's momentum theory are also employed. In order to validate the relationships between the initial vertical velocity and the peak value of vertical acceleration, free fall …
We evaluate the effect of two experimental parameters on the slow dynamics of a Von-Kármán swirling flow driven by two propellers in a closed cylinder. The first parameter is the inertia mo- mentum of the propellers, and the second parameter is the aspect ratio, i.e. the distance between the propellers $H$ divided by the diameter $D$. We use a cell with a fixed diameter $D$ but where the distance between the propellers can be turned continuously and where the inertia from the pro- pellers can also be changed using different gears. No change on the dynamics is observed when the momentum of iner…
We investigate the ability of 4D Particle Tracking Velocimetry measurements at high particle density to explore intermittency and irreversibility in a turbulent swirling flow at various Reynolds numbers. For this, we devise suitable tools to remove the experimental noise, and compute the statistics of both Lagrangian velocity increments and wavelet coefficients of the Lagrangian power (the time derivative of the kinetic energy along a trajectory). We show that the signature of noise is strongest on short trajectories, and results in deviations from the regularity condition at small time scales…
We have performed numerical simulations of boundary-driven dynamos using a three-dimensional non-linear magnetohydrodynamical model in a spherical shell geometry. A conducting fluid of magnetic Prandtl number Pm=0.01 is driven into motion by the counter-rotation of the two hemispheric walls. The resulting flow is of von Kármán type, consisting of a layer of zonal velocity close to the outer wall and a secondary meridional circulation. Above a certain forcing threshold, the mean flow is unstable to non-axisymmetric motions within an equatorial belt. For fixed forcing above this threshold, we ha…
A stochastic model is derived to predict the turbulent torque produced by a swirling flow. It is a simple Langevin process, with a colored noise. Using the unified colored noise approximation, we derive analytically the PDF of the fluctuations of injected power in two forcing regimes: constant angular velocity or constant applied torque. In the limit of small velocity fluctuations and vanishing inertia, we predict that the injected power fluctuates twice less in the case of constant torque than in the case of constant angular velocity forcing. The model is further tested against experimental d…
In this paper, we investigate the relations between global and local energy transfers in a turbulent von Kármán flow. The goal is to understand how and where energy is dissipated in such a flow and to reconstruct the energy cycle in an experimental device where local as well as global quantities can be measured. We use PIV measurements and we model the Reynolds stress tensor to take subgrid scales into account. This procedure involves a free parameter that is calibrated using angular momentum balance. We then estimate the local and global mean injected and dissipated power for several types of…
The vortex streets produced by a flapping foil of span-to-chord aspect ratio of 4:1 are studied in a hydrodynamic tunnel experiment. In particular, the mechanisms giving rise to the symmetry breaking of the reverse Bénard-von Kármán vortex street that characterizes fish-like swimming and forward flapping flight are examined. Two-dimensional particle image velocimetry measurements in the mid-plane perpendicular to the span axis of the foil are used to characterize the different flow regimes. The deflection angle of the mean jet flow with respect to the horizontal observed in the average velocit…
Here we report experimental results on the fluctuations of injected power in confined turbulence. Specifically, we have studied a von Kármán swirling flow with constant external torque applied to the stirrers. Two experiments were performed at nearly equal Reynolds numbers, in geometrically similar experimental setups. Air was utilized in one of them and water in the other. With air, it was found that the probability density function of power fluctuations is strongly asymmetric, while with water, it is nearly Gaussian. This suggests that the outcome of a big change of the fluid density in the …
Scrupulous measurements and detailed data analysis of the torque in a swirling turbulent flow driven by counter-rotating bladed disks reveals an apparent breaking of the law of similarity. Potentially, such breakdown could arise from several possible factors, including dependence on dimensionless numbers other that $Re$ or velocity coupling to other fields such as temperature. However, careful redesign and calibration of the experiment showed that this unexpected result was due to background errorscaused by minute misalignments which lead to a noisy and irreproducible torque signal at low rota…
The notion of instability of a turbulent flow is introduced in the case of a von Kármán flow thanks to the monitoring of the spatio-temporal spectrum of the velocity fluctuations, combined with projection onto suitable Beltrami modes. It is shown that the large scale coherent fluctuations of the flow obeys a sequence of Eckhaus instabilities when the Reynolds number $\mathrm{Re}$ is varied from $10^2$ to $10^6$. This sequence results in modulations of increasing azimuthal wavenumber. The basic state is the laminar or time-averaged flow at an arbitrary $\mathrm{Re}$, which is axi-symmetric, i.e…
We suggest that the dynamical spontaneous symmetry breaking reported in a turbulent swirling flow at $Re=40~000$ by Cortet et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 105, 214501 (2010) can be described through a continuous one parameter family transformation (amounting to a phase shift) of steady states and could be the analogue of the Goldstone mode of the vertical translational symmetry in an ideal system. We investigate a possible mechanism of emergence of such spontaneous symmetry breaking in a toy model of our out-equilibrium system, derived from its equilibrium counterpart. We show that the stationary st…
We present results from consistent dynamo simulations, where the electrically conducting and incompressible flow inside a cylinder vessel is forced by moving impellers numerically implemented by a penalization method. The numerical scheme models jumps of magnetic permeability for the solid impellers, resembling various configurations tested experimentally in the von-Karman Sodium experiment. The most striking experimental observations are reproduced in our set of simulations. In particular, we report on the existence of an axisymmetric dynamo mode, self-consistently generated when the magnetic…
Although the stability properties of the wake past impervious bluff bodies have been widely examined in the literature, similar analyses regarding the flow around and through porous ones are still lacking. In this work, the effect of the porosity and permeability on the wake patterns of porous rectangular cylinders is numerically investigated at low to moderate Reynolds numbers in the framework of direct numerical simulation combined with local and global stability analyses. A modified Darcy-Brinkman formulation is employed here so as to describe the flow behavior inside the porous media, wher…
The paper presents a theory of shear-generated turbulence at asymptotically high Reynolds numbers. It is based on an ensemble of dipole vortex tubes taken as quasi-particles and realized in form of rings, hairpins or filament couples of potentially finite length. In a not necesserily planar cross sectional area through a vortex tangle, taken locally orthogonal through each individual tube, the dipoles are moving with the classical dipole velocity. The vortex radius is directly related with Prandtl's classical mixing length. The quasi-particles perform dipol chaos which reminds of molecular cha…
The two dimensional incompressible viscous flow past a flapping foil immersed in a uniform stream is studied numerically. Numerical simulations were performed using a Lattice-Boltzmann model for moderate Reynolds numbers. The computation of the hydrodynamic force on the foil is related to the the wake structure. In particular, when the foil's centre of mass is fixed in space, numerical results suggest a relation between drag coefficient behaviour and the flapping frequency which determines the transition from the von Kármán (vKm) to the inverted von Kármán wake. Beyond the inverted vKm transit…
In this work, we calculate the self-similar longitudinal velocity correlation function and the statistical properties of velocity difference using the results of the Lyapunov analysis of the fully developed isotropic homogeneous turbulence just presented by the author in a previous work (arXiv:0911.1463). There, a closure of the von Karman-Howarth equation is proposed and the statistics of velocity difference is determined through a specific analysis of the Fourier-transformed Navier-Stokes equations. The correlation functions correspond to steady-state solutions of the von Karman-Howarth equa…
In the VKS2 (von Kármán Sodium 2) successful dynamo experiment of September 2006, the magnetic field that was observed showed a strong axisymmetric component, implying that non axisymmetric components of the flow field were acting. By modeling the induction effect of the spiraling flow between the blades of the impellers in a kinematic dynamo code, we find that the axisymmetric magnetic mode is excited and becomes dominant in the vicinity of the dynamo threshold. % The control parameters are the magnetic Reynolds number of the mean flow, the coefficient measuring the induction effect, $α$, and…
A crucial point for the understanding of the von-Kármán-Sodium (VKS) dynamo experiment is the influence of soft-iron impellers. We present numerical simulations of a VKS-like dynamo with a localized permeability distribution that resembles the shape of the flow driving impellers. It is shown that the presence of soft-iron material essentially determines the dynamo process in the VKS experiment. % An axisymmetric magnetic field mode can be explained by the combined action of the soft-iron disk and a rather small $α$-effect parametrizing the induction effects of unresolved small scale flow fluct…
We provide direct measurements of the boundary layer properties in highly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow up to $\text{Ta}=6.2 \times 10^{12}$ using high-resolution particle image velocimetry (PIV). We find that the mean azimuthal velocity profile at the inner and outer cylinder can be fitted by the von Kármán log law $u^+ = \frac 1κ\ln y^+ +B$. The von Kármán constant $κ$ is found to depend on the driving strength $\text{Ta}$ and for large $\text{Ta}$ asymptotically approaches $κ\approx 0.40$. The variance profiles of the local azimuthal velocity have a universal peak around $y^+ \approx 12$ an…
We discuss the role of elastic stress in the statistical properties of elastic turbulence, realized by the flow of a polymer solution between two disks. The dynamics of the elastic stress are analogous to those of a small scale fast dynamo in magnetohydrodynamics, and to those of the turbulent advection of a passive scalar in the Batchelor regime. Both systems are theoretically studied in literature, and this analogy is exploited to explain the statistical properties, the flow structure, and the scaling observed experimentally. Several features of elastic turbulence are confirmed experimentall…
The Weak Turbulence Theory has been applied to waves in thin elastic plates obeying the Föppl-Von Kármán dynamical equations. Subsequent experiments have shown a strong discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and the measurements. Both the dynamical equations and the Weak Turbulence Theory treatment require some restrictive hypotheses. Here a direct numerical simulation of the Föppl-Von Kármán equations is performed and reproduces qualitatively and quantitatively the experimental results when the experimentally measured damping rate of waves $γ_\mathbf{k}= a + bk^2$ is used. This confi…
The Karman constant κ- widely used in atmospheric science and engineering turbulence modelling, and proposed by Prandtl in 1925 and von Karman in 1930 to describe the mean velocity of a turbulent wall-bounded flow - leads to a logarithmic profile in an overlap region near the wall. For over eighty years, its value was believed to be ~0.41. But more recently, many argue that it is not a constant, because of measured variations in different flows and at different Reynolds numbers (Re). Here, a multi-layer analytic theory is shown to lead to a re-interpretation of κas a global constant for both t…
We investigate the dynamics of very large particles freely advected in a turbulent von Karman flow. Contrary to other experiments for which the particle dynamics is generally studied near the geometrical center of the flow, we track the particles in the whole experiment volume. We observe a strong influence of the mean structure of the flow that generates an unexpected large-scale sampling effect for the larger particles studied; contrary to neutrally buoyant particles of smaller yet finite sizes that exhibit no preferential concentration in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence (Fiabane et al.…
We analyze time series stemming from experiments and direct numerical simulations of hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Simulations are done in periodic boxes, but with a volumetric forcing chosen to mimic the geometry of the flow in the experiments, the von Kármán swirling flow between two counter-rotating impellers. Parameters in the simulations are chosen to (within computational limitations) allow comparisons between the experiments and the numerical results. Conducting fluids are considered in all cases. Two different configurations are considered: a case with a weak externa…
In an attempt to understand why the dominating magnetic field observed in the von-Kármán-Sodium (VKS) dynamo experiment is axisymmetric, we investigate in the present paper the ability of mean field models to generate axisymmetric eigenmodes in cylindrical geometries. An $α$-effect is added to the induction equation and we identify reasonable and necessary properties of the $α$ distribution so that axisymmetric eigenmodes are generated. The parametric study is done with two different simulation codes. We find that simple distributions of $α$-effect, either concentrated in the disk neighbourhoo…
In the last decades, the experimental study of dynamo action has made great progress. However, after the dynamo experiments in Karlsruhe and Riga, the von-Karman-Sodium (VKS) dynamo is only the third facility that has been able to demonstrate fluid flow driven self-generation of magnetic fields in a laboratory experiment. Further progress in the experimental examination of dynamo action is expected from the planned precession driven dynamo experiment that will be designed in the framework of the liquid sodium facility DRESDYN (DREsden Sodium facility for DYNamo and thermohydraulic studies). In…
We propose a plasma experiment to be used to investigate fundamental properties of astrophysical dynamos. The highly conducting, fast-flowing plasma will allow experimenters to explore systems with magnetic Reynolds numbers an order of magnitude larger than those accessible with liquid-metal experiments. The plasma is confined using a ring-cusp strategy and subject to a toroidal differentially rotating outer boundary condition. As proof of principle, we present magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the proposed experiment. When a von Kármán-type boundary condition is specified, and the magnetic R…
The von Karman-Howarth equation implies an infinity of invariants corresponding to an infinity of different asymptotic behaviours of the double and triple velocity correlation functions at infinite separations. Given an asymptotic behaviour at infinity for which the Birkhoff-Saffman invariant is not infinite, there are either none, or only one or only two finite invariants. If there are two, one of them is the Loitsyansky invariant and the decay of large eddies cannot be self-similar. We examine the consequences of this infinity of invariants on a particular family of exact solutions of the vo…
Flow past a circular cylinder is investigated in the subcritical regime, below the onset of Benard-von Karman vortex shedding at Re_c ~ 47. The transient response of infinitesimal perturbations is computed. The domain requirements for obtaining converged results is discussed at length. It is shown that energy amplification occurs as low as Re=2.2. Throughout much of the subcritical regime the maximum energy amplification increases approximately exponentially in the square of Re reaching 6800 at Re_c$. The spatiotemporal structure of the optimal transient dynamics is shown to be transitory Bena…
We perform kinematic simulations of dynamo action driven by a helical small scale flow of a conducting fluid in order to deduce mean-field properties of the combined induction action of small scale eddies. We examine two different flow patterns in the style of the G.O. Roberts flow but with a mean vertical component and with internal fixtures that are modelled by regions with vanishing flow. These fixtures represent either rods that lie in the center of individual eddies, or internal dividing walls that provide a separation of the eddies from each other. The fixtures can be made of magnetic ma…
We report an experimental investigation on the influence of an external magnetic field on forced 3D turbulence of liquid gallium in a closed vessel. We observe an exponential damping of the turbulent velocity fluctuations as a function of the interaction parameter N (ratio of Lorentz force over inertial terms of the Navier-Stokes equation). The flow structures develop some anisotropy but do not become bidimensional. From a dynamical viewpoint, the damping first occurs homogeneously over the whole spectrum of frequencies. For larger values of N, a very strong additional damping occurs at the hi…
The use of the complex velocity potential and the complex velocity is widely disseminated in the study of two-dimensional incompressible potential flows. The advantages of working with complex analytical functions made this representation of the flow ubiquitous in the field of theoretical aerodynamics. However, this representation is not usually employed in linear stability studies, where the representation of the velocity as real vectors is preferred by most authors, in order to allow the representation of the perturbation as the complex exponential function. Some of the classical attempts to…
The intention of the ''von Karman sodium'' (VKS) experiment is to study the hydromagnetic dynamo effect in a highly turbulent and unconstrained flow. Much effort has been devoted to the optimization of the mean flow and the lateral boundary conditions in order to minimize the critical magnetic Reynolds number and hence the necessary motor power. The main focus of this paper lies on the role of ''lid layers'', i.e. layers of liquid sodium between the impellers and the end walls of the cylinder. First, we study an analytical test flow to show that lid layers can have an ambivalent effect on the …
