Energy recovering an electron beam after it has participated in a free-electron laser (FEL) interaction can be quite challenging because of the substantial FEL-induced energy spread and the energy anti-damping that occurs during deceleration. In the Jefferson Lab infrared FEL driver-accelerator, such an energy recovery scheme was implemented by properly matching the longitudinal phase space throughout the recirculation transport by employing the so-called energy compression scheme. In the present paper, after presenting a single-particle dynamics approach of the method used to energy-recover the electron beam, we report on experimental validation of the method obtained by measurements of the so-called "compression efficiency" and "momentum compaction" lattice transfer maps at different locations in the recirculation transport line. We also compare these measurements with numerical tracking simulations.
Any proposal for an accelerator facility based upon a multipass Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) must possess a self-consistent match in longitudinal phase space, not just transverse phase space. We therefore present a semi-analytic method to determine self-consistent longitudinal matches in any multipass ERL. We apply this method in collider scenarios (embodying an energy spread minimising match) and FEL scenarios (embodying a compressive match), and discuss the consequences of each. As an example of the utility of the method, we prove that the choice of common or separate recirculation transport …
Longitudinal space charge (LSC) effects are generally considered harmful in free-electron lasers as they can seed unfavorable energy modulations that can result in density modulations with associated emittance dilution. It was pointed out, however, that such "micro-bunching instabilities" could be potentially useful to support the generation of broadband coherent radiation. Therefore there has been an increasing interest in devising accelerator beam lines capable of controlling LSC induced density modulations. In the present paper we augment these previous investigations by combining a grid-le…
We present a novel modular magnetic system that can introduce a large and continuously-variable path length difference without simultaneous variation of the longitudinal dispersion. This is achieved by using a combination of an electrically-adjustable magnetic chicane and a mechanically-adjustable focus- ing chicane. We describe how such a system may be made either isochronous or with a given longitudinal dispersion, and show that the nonlinear terms in such a system are relatively small.
The superconducting (SC) High Intensity and Energy (HIE) ISOLDE linac will replace most of the existing accelerating infrastructure of the Radioactive ion beam EXperiment (REX) at CERN, however, the 101.28 MHz RFQ and 5 MV IH cavity will remain in the role of injector for the upgrade, boosting the beam up to an energy of 1.2 MeV/u. We present the results of a beam dynamics investigation of the injector focused most critically on matching the longitudinal beam parameters from the RFQ to the SC machine, which is complicated largely by the IH cavity employing a Combined Zero Degree (KONUS) beam d…
Project-X is the proposed high intensity proton facility to be built at Fermilab, US. Its Superconducting Linac, to be used at first stage of acceleration, will be operated in continuous wave (CW) mode. The Linac is divided into three sections on the basis of operating frequencies & six sections on the basis of family of RF cavities to be used for the acceleration of beam from 2.5 MeV to 3 GeV. The transition from one section to another can limit the acceptance of the Linac if these are not matched properly. We performed a study to calculate the acceptance of the Linac in both longitudinal and…
The first phase of the HIE-ISOLDE project at CERN consists of a superconducting (SC) linac upgrade in order to increase the energy of post-accelerated radioactive ion beams from 2.8 MeV/u to over 10 MeV/u (for A/q = 4.5). In preparation for the upgrade, we present beam dynamics studies of the booster section of the normal conducting (NC) REX-ISOLDE linac, focused on the longitudinal development of the beam in the 101.28 MHz Interdigital H-mode Structure (IHS), employing a Combined Zero Degree Structure (KONUS), pulsing at a high gradient of over 3 MV/m. The evolution of the transverse emittanc…
A linac (linear accelerator) is a system that allows to accelerate charged particles through a linear trajectory by electromagnetic fields. This kind of accelerator finds several applications in fundamental research and industry. The main devices used to accelerate the particle beam will be introduced in the first part of the paper, while in the second part, the fundamentals of the longitudinal and transverse beam dynamics will be highlighted. A short paragraph is finally dedicated to radiofrequency quadrupoles (RFQ).
The Fermilab Linac delivers 400 MeV H- beam to the rest of the accelerator chain. Providing stable intensity, energy, and emittance is key since it directly affects downstream machines. To counter fluctuations of Linac output due to various effects to be described below we are working on implementing dynamic longitudinal parameter optimization based on Machine Learning (ML). As inputs for the ML model, signals from beam diagnostics have to be well understood and reliable. In this paper we discuss the status and plans for ML-based optimization as well as preliminary results of diagnostics studi…
A high peak current, flat longitudinal phase space electron beam is desirable for efficient x-ray free electron laser (FEL) radiation in next generation light sources. To attain such a beam requires the extensive design of the linear accelerator (linac) including both linear and nonlinear effects. In this paper, we propose a lumped longitudinal beam dynamics model for fast optimization of the electron beam longitudinal phase space through the accelerator. This model is much faster than available tracking programs and also shows good agreement with the fully three-dimensional element-by-element…
The ADS accelerator in China is a CW (Continuous-Wave) proton linac with 1.5 GeV in beam energy, 10 mA in beam current, and 15 MW in beam power. To meet the extremely low beam loss rate requirement and high reliability, it is very important to study the beam halo caused by beam mismatch, which is one major source of beam loss. To avoid the envelope instability, the phase advances per period are all smaller than 90 degree in the main linac design. In this paper, the results of the emittance growth and the envelope oscillations caused by mismatch in the main linac section are presented. To meet …
A 52MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) linear accelerator (linac) is designed to serve as an initial structure for the SSC-linac system (injector into Separated Sector Cyclotron). The designed injection and output energy are 3.5 keV/u and 143 keV/u, respectively. Beam dynamics study in RFQ was done using 3-dimensional particle-in-cell code BEAMPATH [1]. Simulation results show that this RFQ structure is characterized by stable value of beam transmission efficiency (at least 95%) for both zero-current mode and for space charge dominated regime. The beam accelerated in RFQ has good quality in …
Three alternative designs of the European Spallation Source (ESS) high energy linac are described. The most promising ones are either a normalconducting (nc) coupled cavity linac (CCL) up tofinal energy or a change at 407 MeV to only one group of 6 cell superconducting (sc) elliptical cavities. Fully 3d Monte Carlo simulations are presented for both options, optimized for reduced halo formation at the linac end. For the error free matched case, especially the halo formation in the longitudinal plane is more pronounced for the hybrid solution with its superconducting cavities, caused by the una…
There is demand for the construction of a medium-energy ion linear accelerator based on superconducting rf (SRF) technology. It must be capable of producing several hundred kilowatts of CW beams ranging from protons to uranium. A considerable amount of power is required in order to generate intense beams of rare isotopes for subsequent acceleration. At present, however, the beam power available for the heavier ions would be limited by ion source performance. To overcome this limit, we have studied the possibility of accelerating multiple-charge-state (multi-Q) beams through a linac. We show th…
This paper presents the modeling of time-structured multiturn injection for an upgraded Main Injector with the 8-GeV Superconducting RF proton driver, or an ILC-style linac, or a Project-X linac. The Radio-Frequency mismatch between a linac and the upgraded Main Injector will induce parasitic longitudinal painting in RF-phase direction. Several different scenarios with a choice of different RF parameters for single RF system and double RF system in the presence of longitudinal space charge have been investigated. From the studies of microbunch injection with the aid of ESME (2003) numerical si…
The paper proposes a method of finding the beam loss locations in a linac. If the beam is scraped at an aperture limitation, moving its centroid with two dipole correctors located upstream and oscillating in sync produces a line at the corresponding frequency in spectra of current-sensitive devices downstream of the loss point. The phase of this signal contains information about the location of the beam loss. Similar lines appear also in the position signals of Beam Position Monitors (BPMs). The phases of the BPM position lines change monotonically (within each 2π) along the linac and can be u…
Injected beam energy and energy spread are critical parameters affecting the performance of our rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS). A real-time energy monitoring system is being installed to examine the H- beam out of the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) 50 MeV linac. The 200 MHz Alvarez linac serves as the injector for the 450 MeV IPNS RCS. The linac provides an 80 ms macropulse of approximately 3x1012 H- ions 30 times per second for coasting-beam injection into the RCS. The RCS delivers protons to a heavy-metal spallation neutron target for material science studies. Using a number of strip-…
A realistic approach to calculate the transport matrix in RF cavities is developed. It is based on joint solution of equations of longitudinal and transverse motion of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field of the linac. This field is a given by distribution (measured or calculated) of the component of the longitudinal electric field on the axis of the linac. New approach is compared with other matrix methods to solve the same problem. The comparison with code ASTRA has been carried out. Complete agreement for tracking results for a TESLA-type cavity is achieved. A corresponding algori…
The generation of the ultra-bright beams required by modern accelerators and drivers of free-electron lasers (FELs) has generally relied on chicane-based bunch compressions that often result in the microbunching instability. Following compression, spectral enhancements extend even into the visible wavelengths through the longitudinal space charge (LSC) impedances. Optical transition radiation (OTR) screens have been extensively used for transverse electron beam size measurements for the bright beams, but the presence of such longitudinal microstructures (microbunching) in the electron beam or …
Knowledge of longitudinal electron bunch profiles is vital to optimize the performance of plasma wakefield accelerators and x-ray free electron laser linacs. Because of their importance to these novel applications, noninvasive frequency domain techniques are often employed to reconstruct longitudinal bunch profiles from coherent synchrotron, transition, or undulator radiation measurements. In this paper, we detail several common reconstruction techniques involving the Kramers-Kronig phase relationship and Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm. Through statistical analysis, we draw general conclusions abo…
The Drive Beam Linac of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) has to accelerate an electron beam with 4.2 A up to 2.4 GeV in almost fully-loaded structures. The pulse contains about 70000 bunches, one in every second rf bucket, and has a length of 140 $μ$s. The beam stability along the beamline is of concern for such a high current and pulse length. We present different options for the lattice of the linac based on FODO, triplet and doublet cells and compare the transverse instability for each lattice including the effects of beam jitter, alignment and beam-based correction. Additionally longitud…
As is known, microbunching instability (MBI) has been one of the most challenging issues in designs of magnetic chicanes for short-wavelength free-electron lasers or linear colliders, as well as those of transport lines for recirculating or energy recovery linac machines. To more accurately quantify MBI in a single-pass system and for more complete analyses, we further extend and continue to increase the capabilities of our previously developed linear Vlasov solver [1] to incorporate more relevant impedance models into the code, including transient and steady-state free-space and/or shielding …
Conventional magnetic transverse focusing in conventional linear accelerators represents a high fraction of their cost and complexity. Both transverse and longitudinal focusing can be obtained from the radio frequency field by using the technique known as Alternating Phase Focusing. The design of suitable sequences has been difficult, without direct theoretical support, inhibiting Alternating Phase Focusing adoption. Synthesis of reported details and new physics and technique result in a new, general method for designing practical Alternating Phase Focusing linear accelerators. Very long seque…
The superconducting upgrade of the REX-ISOLDE radioactive ion beam (RIB) post-accelerator at CERN will utilise a compact lattice comprising quarter-wave resonators (QWRs) and solenoids, accelerating beams in the mass range 2.5 < A/q < 4.5 to over 10 MeV/u. The short and independently phased quarter-wave structures allow for the acceleration of RIBs over a variable velocity profile and provide an unrivalled longitudinal acceptance when coupled with solenoid focusing. The incorporation of the solenoids into the cryomodule shortens the linac, whilst maximising the acceptance, but the application …
An asynchronous accelerator is described, in which the principle of its operation permits the active longitudinal bunch compression of accelerated proton beams, to overcome the space charge limitation effects of intense bunches. It is shown that accelerated bunches from an RFQ linac can be adapted for Asynchronac injection for a multiple of choices in the acceleration frequencies of the RFQ and the Asynchronac. The offered new type of accelerator system is especially suitable to accelerate proton beams for up to 100MeV energy and hundreds of mA average current.
We show that the difference resonance driven by the space charge pseudo-octupole of high-intensity beams not only couples the beam core emittances; it can also lead to emittance exchange in the beam halo, which is of relevance for beam loss in high intensity accelerators. With reference to linear accelerators the "main resonance" kz/kxy =1 (corresponding to the Montague resonance 2Qx-2Qy=0 in circular accelerators) may lead to such a coupling and transfer of halo between planes. Coupling of transverse halo into the longitudinal plane - or vice versa - can occur even if the core (rms) emittance…
The RadiaBeam/SLAC dechirper, a structure consisting of pairs of flat, metallic, corrugated plates, %a corrugated structure in flat geometry, has been installed just upstream of the undulators in the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). As a dechirper, with the beam passing between the plates on axis, longitudinal wakefields are induced that can remove unwanted energy chirp in the beam. However, with the beam passing off axis, strong transverse wakes are also induced. This mode of operation has already been used for the production of intense, multi-color photon beams using the Fresh-Slice techn…
In order to update the beam power from 100 kW to 250 kW in China spallation neutron source (CSNS) Phase II, one of the important measures is to replace the 80 meters long beam transport line between the present 80 MeV linac injector and the RCS to another kind of acceleration structure. In this paper, we proposed a scheme based on 324 MHz double-spoke superconducting cavities. Unlike the superconducting elliptical cavity and normal conducting CCL structure, the double-spoke cavity belongs to TE mode structure and has smaller transvers dimension compared with that of TH mode one. It can work at…
ARES (Accelerator Research Experiment at SINBAD) is a linear accelerator at the SINBAD (Short INnovative Bunches and Accelerators at DESY) facility at DESY. ARES was designed to combine reproducible beams from conventional RF-based accelerator technology with novel but still experimental acceleration techniques. It aims to produce high brightness ultra-short electron bunches in the range of sub fs to few fs, at a beam energy of 100-150 MeV, suitable for injection into novel acceleration experiments like Dielectric Laser Acceleration (DLA) and Laser driven Plasma Acceleration (LPA). This paper …
We present the design of a high repetition rate MeV energy ultrafast electron diffraction instrument based on a DC photoelectron gun and an SRF linac with multiple independently controlled accelerating and bunching cavities. The design is based on the existing Cornell photoinjector, which can readily be applied to the presented findings. Using particle tracking simulations in conjunction with multiobjective genetic algorithm optimization, we explore the smallest bunch lengths, emittance, and probe spot sizes achievable. We present results for both stroboscopic conditions (with single electrons…
This paper gives a very brief summary of longitudinal beam dynamics for both linear and circular accelerators. After discussing synchronism conditions in linacs, it focuses on particle motion in synchrotrons. It summarizes the equations of motion, discusses phase-space matching during beam transfer, and introduces the Hamiltonian of longitudinal motion.
The nuclear physics experiments at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility often require longitudinally polarized electrons to be simultaneously delivered to three experimental halls. The degree of longitudinal polarization to each hall varies as function of the accelerator settings, making it challenging in certain situations to deliver a high degree of longitudinal polarization to all the halls simultaneously. Normally, the degree of longitudinal polarization the halls receive is optimized by changing the initial spin direction at the beginning of the machine with a Wien filter. H…
This chapter gives an overview of the longitudinal dynamics of the particles in an accelerator and, closely related to that, the issue of synchronization between the particles and the accelerating field. Beginning with the trivial case of electrostatic accelerators, the synchronization condition is explained for a number of driven accelerators like Alvarez linacs, cyclotrons and finally synchrotrons and storage rings, where it plays a crucial role. In the case of the latter, the principle of phase focusing is motivated qualitatively as well as on a mathematically more correct level and the pro…
Space-charge-induced emittance growth is a big con-cern for designing low energy and high intensity linacs. The Equipartitioning Principle was introduced to mini-mize space-charge-induced emittance growth by remov-ing free energy between the transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. In this study, a different design guide-line is being proposed. It suggests to hold the ratio of longitudinal emittance to transverse emittance around one and take advantage of low emittance transfer for minimizing emittance growth. Using a high intensity RFQ accelerator as an example, a comparison between th…
In the National Spallation Neutron Source (NSNS) design, a 180 meter long transport line connects the 1 GeV linac to an accumulator ring. The linac beam has a current of 28 mA, pulse length of 1 ms, and 60 Hz rep rate. The high energy transport line consists of sixteen 60 degrees FODO cells, and accommodates a 90 degrees achromatic bend, an energy compressor, collimators, part of injection system, and enough diagnostic devices to measure the beam quality before injection. To reduce the uncontrolled beam losses, this line has nine beam halo scrapers and very tight tolerances on both transverse …
A new class of self-consistent 6-D phase space stationary distributions is constructed both analytically and numerically. The beam is then mismatched longitudinally and/or transversely, and we explore the beam stability and halo formation for the case of 3-D axisymmetric beam bunches using particle-in-cell simulations. We concentrate on beams with bunch length-to-width ratios varying from 1 to 5, which covers the typical range of the APT linac parameters. We find that the longitudinal halo forms first for comparable longitudinal and transverse mismatches. An interesting coupling phenomenon - a…
This paper describes a design for the front end of a superconducting (SC) ion linac which can accept and simultaneously accelerate two charge states of uranium from an ECR ion source. This mode of operation increases the beam current available for the heaviest ions by a factor of two. We discuss the 12 MeV/u prestripper section of the Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) driver linac including the LEBT, RFQ, MEBT and SC sections, with a total voltage of 112 MV. The LEBT consists of two bunchers and electrostatic quadrupoles. The fundamental frequency of both bunchers is half of the RFQ frequency. Th…
Realization of a short bunch beam by manipulating the longitudinal phase space distribution with a finite longitudinal dispersion following an off-crest accelera- tion is a widely used technique. The technique was applied in a compact test accelerator of an energy-recovery linac scheme for compressing the bunch length at the return loop. A diagnostic system utilizing coherent transition radiation was developed for the beam tuning and for estimating the bunch length. By scanning the beam parameters, we experimentally found the best condition for the bunch compression. The RMS bunch length of 25…
We describe a compact THz-pump and X-ray-probe beamline, based on an electron linac, for ultrafast time-resolved diffraction applications. Two high-energy electron ($γ>50$) bunches, $5~$ns apart, impinge upon a single-foil or a multifoil radiator and generate THz radiation and X-rays simultaneously. The THz pulse from the first bunch is synchronized to the X-ray beam of the second bunch by using an adjustable optical delay of THz pulse. The peak power of THz radiation from the multifoil radiator is estimated to be $0.14~$GW for a $200~$pC well-optimized electron bunch. GEANT4 simulations show …
We put forward a method to optimize the step-tapering amplitude of undulator strength and initial energy detuning of electron beam with the goal of maximizing the saturation power of high-gain FELs, based on the physics of longitudinal electron beam phase space. Using the FEL simulation code GENESIS, we numerically demonstrate the accuracy of the estimation for parameters corresponding to the linac coherent light source and the Tesla test facility.
In this paper we discuss the design choices and construction strategy of the tapered undulator system designed for a high energy extraction efficiency experiment in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum planned for installation at the Argonne National Laboratory Linac Extension Area (LEA) beamline. The undulator is comprised of 4 sections pure permanent magnet Halbach array separated by short break sections, each one of them housing a focusing quadrupole doublet and a phase shifter. The quadrupoles use a novel hybrid design which allows one to vary the gradient and match the b…
The successful operation of X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs), like the Linac Coherent Light Source or the Free-Electron Laser in Hamburg (FLASH), makes unprecedented research on matter at atomic length and ultrafast time scales possible. However, in order to take advantage of these unique light sources and to meet the strict requirements of many experiments in photon science, FEL photon pulse durations need to be known and tunable. This can be achieved by controlling the FEL driving electron beams, and high-resolution longitudinal electron beam diagnostics can be utilized to provide constrain…
KEK-ATF is doing R&D establishing high-current and low-emittance electron beam for the future linear colliders. In ATF, 15 ps length electron beam is generated by combination of a thermionic gun, a couple of 357 MHz SHBs, and a S-band TW buncher. In the linac, beam instability caused by the fluctuated amplitude and phase of SHBs has been observed. The reason of the fluctuation is considered to be the multi-pacting in the SHB cavity. In addition, Q value of the cavity is almost half of the designed value, then SHBs are not operated in an optimum condition. We have fabricated new SHBs with consi…
Transverse deflecting structures (TDS) are widely used in accelerator physics to measure the longitudinal density of particle bunches. When used in combination with a dispersive section, the whole longitudinal phase space density can be imaged. At the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), the installation of such a device downstream of the undulators enables the reconstruction of the X-ray temporal intensity profile by comparing longitudinal phase space distributions with lasing on and lasing off. However, the resolution of this TDS is limited to around 1 fs rms (root mean square), and therefore…
The Proton Improvement Plan, Stage Two (PIP-II) is a program of upgrades proposed for the Fermilab injection complex, which central part is an 800 MeV, 2 mA CW SRF linac. A prototype of the PIP-II linac front end called PIP-II Injector Test (PIP2IT) is being built at Fermilab. As of now, a 15 mA DC, 30-keV H- ion source, a 2 m-long Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 2.1 MeV CW RFQ, followed by a 10 m Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) have been assembled and commissioned. The MEBT bunch-by-bunch chopping system and the requirement of a low uncontrolled beam loss put stringent limitations on …
Electron bunch compressors formed of achromat arcs have a natural advantage over the more commonly used chicane compressors in that linearisation of the longitudinal phase space is of the correct sign to compensate for the curvature imprinted by rf acceleration. Here we extend the utility of arc compressors to enable variation of the longitudinal compaction within a fixed footprint. We also show that this variability can be achieved independently order-by-order in momentum deviation. The technique we employ consists of additional dipoles, leading to the advantageous property that variability c…
The design of the Linac Coherent Light Source assumes that a low-emittance, 1-nC, 10-ps beam will be available for injection into the 15-GeV linac. The proposed rf photocathode injector that will provide a 150-MeV beam with rms normalized emittances of 1 mm in both the transverse and longitudinal dimensions is based on a 1.6-cell S-band rf gun that is equipped with an emittance compensating solenoid. The booster accelerator is positioned at the beam waist coinciding with the first emittance maximum and is provided with an accelerating gradient of ~25 MeV/m, i.e., the "new working point." The u…
An upgrade of the Jefferson Lab IR FEL is now under construction. It will provide 10 kW output light power in a wavelength range of 2-10 microns. The FEL will be driven by a modest-sized 80-210 MeV, 10 mA energy-recovering superconducting RF (SRF) linac. Stringent phase space requirements at the wiggler, low beam energy, and high beam current subject the design to numerous constraints. These are imposed by the need for both transverse and longitudinal phase space management, the potential impact of collective phenomena (space charge, wakefields, beam break-up (BBU), and coherent synchrotron ra…
