Autocatalytic reaction between reacted and unreacted species may propagate as solitary waves, namely at a constant front velocity and with a stationary concentration profile, resulting from a balance between molecular diffusion and chemical reaction. The effect of advective flow on the autocatalytic reaction between iodate and arsenous acid in cylindrical tubes and Hele-Shaw cells is analyzed experimentally and numerically using lattice BGK simulations. We do observe the existence of solitary waves with concentration profiles exhibiting a cusp and we delineate the eikonal and mixing regimes recently predicted.
Using extensive direct numerical simulations, the dynamics of laminar-turbulent fronts in pipe flow is investigated for Reynolds numbers between $Re=2000$ and $5500$. We here investigate the physical distinction between the fronts of weak and strong slugs both by analysing the turbulent kinetic energy budget and by comparing the downstream front motion to the advection speed of bulk turbulent structures. Our study shows that weak downstream fronts travel slower than turbulent structures in the bulk and correspond to decaying turbulence at the front. At $Re\simeq 2900$ the downstream front spee…
This study aims to build a theoretical model to describe the ignition process of spherical spray flame laden with fuel droplets under overall fuel-lean condition. Two characteristic fronts are introduced to reveal where the evaporation starts and ends in the ignition process. The results demonstrate that the flame has been strengthened with extra fuel droplet adding while the minimum ignition energy (MIE) is decreased. The evolution of the two evaporation fronts in the flame kernel and propagating branches has also be revealed coupled with the evaporation zone length.
We study the effect of thermal noise on the propagation speed of a planar flame. We show that this out of equilibrium greatly amplifies the effect of thermal noise to yield macroscopic reductions in the flame speed over what is predicted by the noise-free model. Computations show that noise slows the flame significantly. The flame is modeled using Navier Stokes equations with appropriate diffusive transport terms and chemical kinetic mechanism of hydrogen/oxygen. Thermal noise is modeled within the continuum framework using a system of stochastic partial differential equations, with transport …

The non-monotonic profile of temperature is to be considered in the context of combustion inside tubes or thermonuclear flames, which may accelerates to become detonation waves. This transition is known as deflagration-to-detonation transition. Focusing on this point, we extend the study of adiabatic flames, which assumes zero temperature gradient at the burned-side edge of a flame front, to the case of non-zero temperature gradient by introducing compression zone behind the front. Such a treatment has been performed in the previous work based on the ignition temperature approximation. In that…
Data from a three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulation of a turbulent premixed Bunsen flame at a low global Lewis number are analyzed to address the effects of the curvature on the local flame front. For this purpose, the chemical kinetics is modeled according to a reduced scheme, involving 5 reactions and 7 species, to mimic a H$_{2}$/Air flame at equivalence ratio $ϕ=0.5$. An increase of the local temperature and reaction rate is found for fronts elongated into the fresh gases (concave), while local quenching is observed for fronts elongated in the opposite direction (convex), i.e. toward…
Turbulent spots surrounded by laminar flow are a landmark of transitional shear flows, but the dependence of their kinematic properties on spatial structure is poorly understood. We here investigate this dependence in pipe flow for Reynolds numbers between 1500 and 5000. We compute spatially localized relative periodic orbits in long pipes and show that their upstream and downstream fronts decay exponentially towards the laminar profile. This allows to model the fronts by employing the linearized Navier-Stokes equations, and the resulting model yields the spatial decay rate and the front veloc…
This paper presents a flame-height correlation for laminar to transition-to-turbulent regime diffusion flames. Flame-height measurements are obtained by means of numerical and experimental studies in which three high definition cameras were employed to take frontal, lateral and 45° angled images simultaneously. The images were analysed using an image-processing algorithm to determine the flame-height through indirect measurement. To locate an overall chemical-flame-length, numerical simulations were conducted with the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes technique. The eddy-dissipation mod…
G-equations are level-set type Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential equations modeling propagation of flame front along a flow velocity and a laminar velocity. In consideration of flame stretching, strain rate may be added into the laminar speed. We perform finite difference computation of G-equations with the discretized strain term being monotone with respect to one-sided spatial derivatives. Let the flow velocity be the time-periodic cellular flow (modeling Rayleigh-Bénard advection), we compute the turbulent flame speeds as the asymptotic propagation speeds from a planar initial flame fron…
Effects of low-temperature chemistry induced by ultrafine water droplet evaporation on reaction front development from an ignition spot with temperature gradient are studied in this work. The Eulerian-Eulerian method is used to simulate the gas-liquid two-phase reactive flows and the physical model is one-dimensional spherical reactor with stoichiometric gaseous n-heptane/air mixture and ultrafine monodisperse water droplets (initial diameter 5 micrometres). Homogeneous ignitions of two-phase mixtures are first simulated. The water droplets can complete evaporation in the reactor prior to igni…
Laminar premixed flame profiles of methane/air free flames and strained flames at different fuel/air ratios and strain rates are analysed using detailed chemistry with Lewis numbers equal to one. It is shown that the detailed chemistry flame profiles of progress variables CO2+CO and H2O+H2 in canonically stretched coordinates can be fitted accurately by a slight generalization of recently proposed analytical presumed flame profiles over a wide range of fuel/air ratios through adaptation of a single model parameter. Strained flame profiles can be reproduced using an additional linear coordinate…
Extinction strain rate (ESR) and laminar flame speed (LFS) are fundamental properties of a fuel/air mixture that are often utilized as scaling parameters in turbulent combustion. While LFS at atmospheric and elevated pressures are extensively investigated, experimental measurements of ESR with counterflow premixed flames are very limited for flame instability often occurs near extinction, especially at high pressures. Due to the scarcity of ESR measurements, most combustion kinetic models are mainly validated and optimized against LFS. However, it is questionable whether the controlling reacti…
The dynamics of fronts, such as chemical reaction fronts, propagating in two-dimensional fluid flows can be remarkably rich and varied. For time-invariant flows, the front dynamics may simplify, settling in to a steady state in which the reacted domain is static, and the front appears "frozen". Our central result is that these frozen fronts in the two-dimensional fluid are composed of segments of burning invariant manifolds---invariant manifolds of front-element dynamics in $xyθ$-space, where $θ$ is the front orientation. Burning invariant manifolds (BIMs) have been identified previously as im…
