We have obtained the solutions of linearized Shr{ö}dinger equation for spherically and axially symmetrical electrons density oscillations in plasma in the approximation of the self-consistent field. It was shown that in the center or on the axis of symmetry of such a system the static density of electrons can enhance, which leads to the increasing of density and pressure of ion gas. We suggest that this mechanism could be realized in nature as rare phenomenon called the 'fireball' and could be used in carrying out the research concerning controlled fusion.
The nonperturbing experimental methods have been described, by means of which the solitary vortex structures in gas-discharge nonneutral electron plasma were detected and investigated. The comparison with the experimental methods used in devices with pure electron plasma was made. The problems of shielding the electrostatic perturbations in nonneutral plasmas were considered.
The one-dimensional flight of a fast electron flux in plasma is investigated taking into account generation and absorption of plasma waves. The transition from the kinetic description to the gas dynamics is made. The closed set of gas dynamic equations for electrons and plasmons is derived and a solution is obtained in the case of monoenergetic injection of fast electrons. This solution represents the beam-plasma structure, which propagates in plasma with a constant velocity.
We analyze the obtained solutions of the non-linear Shroedinger equation for spherically and axially symmetrical electrons density oscillations in plasma. The conditions of the oscillations process existence are examined. It is shown that in the center or on the axis of symmetry of the systems the static density of electrons enhances. This process results in the increasing of density and pressure of the ion gas. We suggest that this mechanism could occur in nature as rare phenomenon called the fireball and could be used in carrying out the research concerning controlled fusion. The description…
Freezing and melting of large three-dimensional complex plasmas under microgravity conditions is investigated. The neutral gas pressure is used as a control parameter to trigger the phase changes: Complex plasma freezes (melts) by decreasing (increasing) the pressure. Evolution of complex plasma structural properties upon pressure variation is studied. Theoretical estimates allow us to identify main factors responsible for the observed behavior.
The kinetic description of magnetic susceptibility and Landau diamagnetism of quantum collisional plasmas with any degeration of electronic gas is given. The correct expression of electric conductivity of quantum collisional plasmas with any degeration of electronic gas (see A. V. Latyshev and A. A. Yushkanov, Transverse electrical conductivity of a quantum collisional plasma in the Mermin approach. - Theor. and Math. Phys., V. 175(1):559-569 (2013)) is used.
In our work we are focused on study of powder formation in C2H2/Ar plasmas. In this scope we used a combination of FTIR and mass spectroscopy, which are the mostly used experimental techniques for plasma powder formation diagnostics. To test the proposed mechanism for particle nucleation delay we measured the particle nucleation under different plasma conditions: firstly we increased the gas temperature and secondly we changed the background gas from argon to helium.

The problem of long confinement of the column of pure electron plasma in Penning-Malmberg trap is considered. The mechanism of stability of long-lived vortex structure in gas-discharge nonneutral electron plasma is investigated. A two-dimensional strongly-coupled dusty plasma is modeled using Langevin and frictionless molecular dynamical simulations. The static viscosity $η$ and the wave-number-dependent viscosity $η(k)$ are calculated from the microscopic shear in the random motion of particles. A recently developed method of calculating the wave-number-dependent viscosity $η(k)$ is validated by comparing the results of $η(k)$ from the two simulations. It is also verified that the Green-Kubo relation can still yield an accurate measure of the static viscosity $η$ in the presence of a modest level of friction as in du…
The idea of using a gas-mixture comprising atoms with high mass number in order to increase proton energies in laser induced plasma acceleration at under critical density is investigated by means of 2D PIC (Particle-In-Cell) simulations. Comparing and discussing the case of a pure hydrogen plasma, and that of a plasma containing higher mass number species with a small percentage of hydrogen, we demonstrated that the mixture enhances the energies of the accelerated protons. We also show that using a gas-mixture introduces the possibility of using the densities ratio to change the relative accel…
A synthesis technology of endohedral fullerenes such as Fe@C60 has developed with an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source. The production of N@C60 was reported. However, the yield was quite low, since most fullerene molecules were broken in the ECR plasma. We have adopted gas-mixing techniques in order to cool the plasma and then reduce fullerene dissociation. Mass spectra of ion beams extracted from fullerene-He, Ar or Xe mixed plasmas were observed with a Faraday cup. From the results, the He gas mixing technique is effective against fullerene destruction.
In a laboratory, a two-dimensional complex (dusty) plasma consists of a low-density ionized gas containing a confined suspension of Yukawa-coupled plastic microspheres. For an initial crystal-like form, we report ideal gas behavior in this strongly-coupled system during shock-wave experiments. This evidence supports the use of the ideal gas law as the equation of state for soft crystals such as those formed by dusty plasmas.
Recent experiments have demonstrated the spontaneous evolution of a gas of ultracold Rydberg atoms into an expanding ultracold plasma, as well as the reverse process of plasma recombination into highly excited atomic states. Treating the evolution of the plasma on the basis of kinetic equations, while ionization/excitation and recombination are incorporated using rate equations, we have investigated theoretically the Rydberg-to-plasma transition. Including the influence of spatial correlations on the plasma dynamics in an approximate way we find that ionic correlations change the results only …
The analytical solution of the boundary problem on behaviour (oscillations) of the electronic plasmas with arbitrary degree of degeneration of electronic gas in a slab of the conducting medium is received. The kinetic Vlasov---Boltzmann equation with integral of collisions type BGK (Bhatnagar, Gross and Krook) and Maxwell equation for electric field are applied. Mirror (reflections) boundary conditions are used.
The comparative analysis of the results of experimental investigations of the processes of formation, interaction and dynamics of vortex structures in pure electron and gas-discharge electron nonneutral plasmas taking place for the period of time much less than the electron-neutral collision time has been given. The general processes of formation and behavior of vortex structures in these two plasmas were considered. The phenomena, taking place only in one of these plasmas were also considered. It is shown that the existing difference in behavior of vortex structures is caused by different ini…
Studies on the interaction of plasma generated at atmospheric pressure and at room temperature (low temperature plasma or just cold plasma) with biological cells and tissues have revealed that cold plasma has therapeutic effects that form the basis for new medical therapies. Cold plasma exhibits bactericidal properties and at low doses can modulate cell functions, including proliferation, attachment, and migration. Research in the last two decades has shown that cold plasma can be used for wound healing and can kill cancer cells in a selective manner. This paper describes the fundamental scien…
An investigation of the multi-hundred MeV electron beam yield (charge) form helium, nitrogen, neon and argon gas jet plasmas in a laser-plasma wakefield acceleration experiment was carried out. The charge measurement has been made via imaging the electron beam intensity profile on a fluorescent screen into a 14-bit charge coupled device (CCD) which was cross-calibrated with nondestructive electronics-based method. Within given laser and plasma parameters, we found that laser-driven low Z- gas jet targets generate high-quality and well-collimated electron beams with reasonable yields at the lev…
It is shown that under the definite regime of interaction of the acoustic waves with low-temperature, partially ionized plasma it is possible to change the intensity of some spectral lines of atomic argon. It is shown also, that the dependence of the intensities of these spectral lines on the intensity of the acoustic wave has a hysteresis behavior.
The mobility of a charged projectile in a strongly coupled dusty plasma is simulated. A net force $F$, opposed by a combination of collisional scattering and gas friction, causes projectiles to drift at a mobility-limited velocity $u_p$. The mobility $μ_p=u_p/F$ of the projectile's motion is obtained. Two regimes depending on $F$ are identified. In the high force regime, $μ_p \propto F^{0.23}$, and the scattering cross section $σ_s$ diminishes as $u_p^{-6/5}$. Results for $σ_s$ are compared with those for a weakly coupled plasma and for two-body collisions in a Yukawa potential. The simulation…
Plasma confinement inside capillaries has been developed in the past years for plasma-based acceleration to ensure a stable and repeatable plasma density distribution during the interaction with either particles or laser beams. In particular, gas-filled capillaries allow a stable and almost predictable plasma distribution along the interaction with the particles. However, the plasma ejected through the ends of the capillary interacts with the beam before the inner plasma, affecting the quality of the beam. In this article we report the measurements on the evolution of the plasma flow at the tw…
We determine the linear optical susceptibility of a radiation pulse propagating through a mixture of a gas of atoms or molecules and a plasma. For a specific range of radiation and plasma frequencies, resonant generation of volume plasmons significantly amplifies the radiation intensity. The conditions for resonant amplification are derived from the dispersion relations in the mixture, and the amplification is demonstrated in a numerical simulation of pulse propagation.
An experimental investigation on laser plasma acceleration of electrons has been carried out using 3 TW, 45 fs duration titanium sapphire laser pulse interaction with nitrogen gas jet at intensity of 2x10^18 W/cm^2. We have observed stable generation of well collimated electron beam with divergence and pointing variation ~ 10 mrad from the nitrogen gas jet plasma at an optimum plasma density around 3x10^19 cm^-3. The energy spectrum of the electron beam was quasi-monoenergetic with average peak energy and charge around 25 MeV and 30 pC respectively. The results will be useful for better unders…
The accurate measurement of plasma potentials at high pressure is investigated with the emissive probe. The emissive probe I-V characteristic of argon plasma obtained at 100 Pa is interpreted in detail, showing two inflection points in the I-V trace. The accurate plasma potentials at high pressure can be determined from the first inflection point potentials (the higher potential) by the improved inflection point method of the emissive probe, while the second inflection point is a result of the additional ionizing phenomenon caused by the collision between the emitted electrons and the neutral …
Microwave plasmas are a promising technology for energy-efficient CO$_{2}$ valorization via conversion of CO$_{2}$ into CO and O$_2$ using renewable energies. A 2.45 GHz microwave plasma torch with swirling CO$_{2}$ gas flow is studied in a large pressure (60-1000~mbar) and flow (5-100~slm) range. Two different modes of the plasma torch, depending on the operating pressure and microwave input power, are described: at pressures below 120~mbar the plasma fills most of the plasma torch volume whereas at pressures of about 120~mbar an abrupt contraction of the plasma in the center of the resonator…
The formation of electron groups is a common phenomenon in gas discharges and space plasmas. We describe similarities between electron kinetics in solar wind, cathode region of glow discharges, and magnetic nozzles. Remarkable resemblances between adiabatic focusing of magnetized electrons and spherical geometry effects for neutral particles escaping planet atmosphere are pointed out. The previously developed kinetic solvers for electrons coupled to Poisson equation for self-consistent simulations of the electric field are used to analyse the formation of electron groups in the cathode region …
The optical diagnostic observing D-alpha line emission along multiple chords in the boundary region close to the plasma absorber, is recently installed at the gas dynamic trap. The implemented pattern of viewing lines is suitable for a tomographic reconstruction of local emissivity profiles, although steps towards increasing the channel count and extending of angular plasma coverage must be taken. The optical registration system of a modular design uses avalanche photodiodes with wideband amplifiers for a large signal dynamic range and the effective time resolution of 1 mks. The iterative back…
The results of experimental investigations of inhomogeneities of gas-discharge nonneutral electron plasma obtained by using the nonperturbing experimental methods [N.A. Kervalishvili, arXiv:1502.02516 [physics.plasm-ph] (2015)] have been presented. Inhomogeneities are the dense solitary vortex structures stretched along the magnetic field, the lifetime of which is much greater than the time of electron-neutral collisions. The processes of formation, evolution and dynamics of vortex structures were studied. The periodic sequence of these processes is described for different geometries of discha…
A large diameter plasma over 300 mm in diameter is produced by electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) discharges using a newly developed large diameter chamber of 400 mm in inner diameter. It is found that the electron temperature decreases as nitrogen gas is added to pure argon plasma, which is considered that nitrogen molecules absorb the electron energy into the vibrational energy and lead to the decrease of the electron temperature. Moreover, it is found that the plasma uniformity is improved by adding nitrogen gas, suggesting that the adjunction of nitrogen gas is effective for producing unif…
The formation of the plasma current spike at the end of the thermal quench phase is studied systematically, which is found to strongly correlate to the onset of the 1/1 kink-tearing reconnection in the simulation results. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity on the q = 1 surface plays a critical role in the spike formation and the disruption process, namely, when the safety factor in the magnetic axis q0 exceeds 1, the plasma major disruption transits into successive minor disruptions and the start of thermal quench phase is delayed.
Paper presents a review of modern works on the gasdynamic flow control using a heat release in highly nonequilibrium pulsed plasma. The major attention is paid to the effects based on ultrafast (on nanosecond time scale at atmospheric pressure) local heating of the gas, since at present the main successes in high-speed flow control using gas discharges are associated with namely this thermal effect. The physical mechanisms that control the interaction of the discharges with gas flows are considered in detail. The first part of the review briefly describes the most popular approaches in plasma …
The results of experimental investigations of the ejection of electrons from gas-discharge nonneutral electron plasma at interaction of vortex structures have been given. The periodical approach of vortex structures causes the ejection of electrons both from the vortex structures themselves and from the adjacent regions of electron sheath to the end cathodes of discharge device. The ejection takes place in the form of short and long pulses following each other. The nature of these pulses and the dynamics of interaction of vortex structures at their approach were studied.
The results of experimental investigations of electron ejection from gas-discharge nonneutral electron plasma at the formation and radial oscillations of vortex structure have been presented. The electrons are injected from the vortex structure and the adjacent region of electron sheath in the form of pulses the duration and periodicity of which are determined by the processes of evolution and dynamics of this structure. The possible mechanisms of pulse ejection of electrons are considered. The influence of electron ejection on other processes in discharge electron sheath is analyzed.
The characteristic of the lateral interaction of two plasma plumes in $Ar$ background gas at high pressures was reported in recent publication [Yadav {\it et. al.}, J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. {\bf 50}, 053421 (2017)]. Further we have investigated the interaction characteristics of plumes in $He$, $Ne$, $Ar$ and $Xe$ background gases to see the effect of mass on the interaction. The present work illustrate the applicability of the present model for theoretical understanding of dynamics, structure, density variation, shock wave formations and their interactions of two propagating plasma plumes in a…
Laser-plasma proton acceleration was investigated in the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) regime using a novel gas-foil target. The target is designed for reaching higher laser intensity at the foil plane owing to relativistic self-focusing and self compression of the pulse in the gas layer. Numerical 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations were used to study pulse propagation in the gas, showing a nearly seven-fold increase in peak intensity. In the experiment, maximum proton energies showed high dependence on the energy transmission of the laser through the gas and a lesser dependence …
The formation of plasma channels with nonuniformity of about +- 3.5% has been demonstrated. The channels had a density of 1.2x10^19 cm-3 with a radius of 15 um and with length >= 2.5 mm. The channels were formed by 0.3 J, 100 ps laser pulses in a nonflowing gas, contained in a cylindrical chamber. The laser beam passed through the chamber along its axis via pinholes in the chamber walls. A plasma channel with an electron density on the order of 10^18 - 10^19 cm-3 was formed in pure He, N2, Ar, and Xe. A uniform channel forms at proper time delays and in optimal pressure ranges, which depend on…
We present an approach which allows the consistent treatment of bound states in the context of the dc conductivity in dense partially ionized noble gas plasmas. Besides electron-ion and electron-electron collisions, further collision mechanisms owing to neutral constituents are taken into account. Especially at low temperatures $T\approx 1 {\rm eV}$, electron-atom collisions give a substantial contribution to the relevant correlation functions. We suggest an optical potential for the description of the electron-atom scattering which is applicable for all noble gases. The electron-atom momentum…
An ellipsoidal volume of Rydberg molecules, entrained in a supersonic molecular beam, evolves on a nanosecond timescale to form a strongly coupled ultracold plasma. We present coupled rate-equation simulations that model the underlying kinetic processes and molecular dissociation channels in both a uniformly distributed plasma and under the conditions dictated by our experimental geometry. Simulations predict a fast electron-driven collisional avalanche to plasma followed by slow electron-ion recombination. Within 20 $μ$s, release of Rydberg binding energy raises the electron temperature of a …
The model of gas-discharge nonneutral electron plasma has been considered, in which the electron density is limited by non-linear processes initiated by diocotron instability and it does not depend on the mechanism of electron transport across the magnetic field. The model describes well the characteristics of electron sheath and the current characteristics of discharge both, in magnetron geometry and in the geometry of inversed magnetron, and it allows us to describe quantitatively the influence of anode misalignment on the discharge electron sheath for the first time. The scope of applicabil…
We describe gas dynamic and plasma effects for transient plasma jets under different conditions. Our Unified Flow Solver (UFS) is evaluated for simulations of mixed continuum-rarefied flows, transient gas expansion dynamics and collisionless plasma expansion. We identify further advances that are required for hybrid fluid-kinetic simulations of laser-ablation and EEE-induced plasma jets.
We discuss the irreversible free expansion phenomenon for Yukawa gas and obtain the corresponding change in temperature of the gas. In our expansion scheme, the system is not allowed to exchange heat with surroundings during free expansion, therefore, present expansion scheme refers to adiabatic free expansion. Using first principle classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation with reflecting boundary conditions, we show that the Yukawa gases exhibits heating effect during the process of adiabatic free expansion. We also obtain the scaling for change in temperature and establish that the chang…
Here we study the structure of a highly ionizing shock wave in a gas of high atmospheric pressure. We take into account the gas ionization when the gas temperature reaches few orders of an ionization potential. It is shown that after gasdynamic temperature-raising shock and formation of a highly-ionized nonisothermal plasma $T_e>>T_i$ only the solitary ion-sound wave (soliton) can propagate in this plasma. In such a wave the charge separation occurs: electrons and ions form the double electric layer with the electric field. The shock wave form, its amplitude and front width are obtained.
We present a pump-probe technique for monitoring ultrafast polarizability changes. In particular, we use it to measure the plasma density created at the temporal focus of a self-compressing higher-order pump soliton in gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. This is done by monitoring the wavelength of the dispersive wave emission from a counter-propagating probe soliton. By varying the relative delay between pump and probe, the plasma density distribution along the fiber can be mapped out. Compared to the recently introduced interferometric side-probing for monitoring the plasma densit…
Compressed Ultrafast Photography of Plasmas Formed from Laser Breakdown of Dense Gases Reveals that Internal Processes Dominate Evolution at Early Times
The role of turbulence in setting boundary plasma conditions is presently a key uncertainty in projecting to fusion energy reactors. To robustly diagnose edge turbulence, we develop and demonstrate a technique to translate brightness measurements of HeI line radiation into local plasma fluctuations via a novel integrated deep learning framework that combines neutral transport physics and collisional radiative theory for the $3^3 D - 2^3 P$ transition in atomic helium. The tenets for experimental validity are reviewed, illustrating that this turbulence analysis for ionized gases is transferable…
We disclose an unanticipated link between plasmonics and nonlinear frequency down-conversion in laser-induced gas-plasmas. For two-color femtosecond pump pulses, a plasmonic resonance is shown to broaden the terahertz emission spectra significantly. We identify the resonance as a leaky mode, which contributes to the emission spectra whenever electrons are excited along a direction where the plasma size is smaller than the plasma wavelength. As a direct consequence, such resonances can be controlled by changing the polarization properties of elliptically-shaped driving laser pulses. Both, exper…
We study the steady-state expansion of a collisionless, electrostatic, quasi-neutral plasma plume into vacuum, with a fluid model. We analyze approximate semi-analytical solutions, that can be used in lieu of much more expensive numerical solutions. In particular, we focus on the earlier studies presented in Parks and Katz (1979), Korsun and Tverdokhlebova (1997), and Ashkenazy and Fruchtman (2001). By calculating the error with respect to the numerical solution, we can judge the range of validity for each solution. Moreover, we introduce a generalization of earlier models that has a wider ran…
The thermodynamical properties of the photon-plasma system had been studied using statistical physics approach. Photons develop an effective mass in the medium thus -- as a result of the finite chemical potential -- a photon Bose-Einstein condensation can be achieved by adjusting one of the relevant parameters (temperature, photon density and plasma density) to criticality. Due to the presence of the plasma, Planck's law of blackbody radiation is also modified with the appearance of a gap below the plasma frequency where a condensation peak of coherent radiation arises for the critical system.…
Plasmas in which there is a threshold for a dominant reaction to take place (such as recombination or attachment) will have particle distributions that evolve as the reaction progresses. The form of the Boltzmann collision term in such a context will cause the distribution to drift from its initial form, and so cause for example temperature fluctuations in the plasma if the distribution is originally Maxwellian. This behaviour will impact on the relevant reaction rates in a feedback loop that is missing from simple chemical kinetic descriptions since the plasma cannot be considered to be isoth…
