Attempts at an electromagnetic explanation of the inertial mass of charged particles have recently been revived within the framework of Stochastic Electrodynamics, characterized by the adoption of a classical version of the electromagnetic zero-point field (ZPF). Recent claims of progress in that area have to some extent received support from related claims that the classical equilibrium spectrum of charged matter is that of the classically conceived ZPF. The purpose of this note is to suggest that some strong qualifications should accompany these claims. It is pointed out that a classical massless charge cannot acquire mass from nothing as a result of immersion in any EM field, and therefore that the ZPF alone cannot provide a full explanation of inertial mass. Of greater concern, it is observed that the peculiar circumstances under which classical matter is in equilibrium with the ZPF do not concur with observation.
Electrodynamics under a Possible Alternative to the Lorentz Transformation
本文用一种可能的替代洛伦兹变换的方法,把经典电动力学推广到绝对运动系统。本文的主要假设是:a)惯性变换涉及两个惯性系:特权系S和相对于S具有速度v的运动系S'。b)场从S到运动标架S'的变换由H'= a(H-v D)和E '= a(E + v B)给出,其中a是一个矩阵,其元素取决于系统的绝对速度。
Comment on ``Torque or no torque? Simple charged particle motion observed in different inertial frames,'' by J. D. Jackson [Am. J. Phys. 72 (12), 1484-1487 (2004)]
The purpose of the dynamics of moving systems is to search for the mathematical model that describes the link between the resultant applied force, that is the cause, and the speed of system that is the effect. This mathematical link provides the law of motion and from Newton forward it has been specified by an differential equation. Starting from the principles of the Theory of Reference Frames it is possible to arrive at new interesting results in the study and in the analysis of dynamical systems provided with linear symmetry and central symmetry. Really the most interesting consequences are…
The possible connection between the electromagnetic zero-point field (ZPF) and the inertia reaction force was first pointed out by Haisch, Rueda, and Puthoff (Phys. Rev. A, 49, 678, 1994), and then by Rueda and Haisch following a totally different and more satisfactory approach (Found. Phys., 28, 1057, 1998; Phys. Letters A, 240, 115, 1998; Annalen der Physik, 10 (5), 393, 2001). In the present paper, the approach taken by Rueda and Haisch will be followed, but the analysis will be done within a formulation that uses nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics with the creation and annihilation op…
In this paper we consider the Dirac spinor field in interaction with a background of electrodynamics and torsion-gravity; by performing the polar reduction we acquire the possibility to introduce a new set of objects that have the geometrical status of non-vanishing tensors but which seem to contain the same information of the connection: thus they appear to be describing something that seems like an inertial force but which is also essentially covariant. After a general introduction, we exemplify these tensors in the very well known instance of the orbital of minimal energy for an electron in…
We recently performed experiments on the transfer of photon spin to electron orbital angular momentum. For an interpretation of the experimental results we used a classical electrodynamic model of the photon as a propagating electromagnetic solitary wave which is developed in detail here. A linearly polarized monochromatic photon is considered as a propagating solitary electromagnetic wave of finite energy hf which carries an angular momentum h/2pi with the frequency f and Plancks constant h. This model has, apart from being a tool for an interpretation of our experimental results, far reachin…
We investigate a new model of nonlinear electromagnetic field coupled with the gravitation field. The black hole solution is obtained possessing the asymptotic Reissner-Nordström solution. The electric field has the finite value at the origin and there are not singularities.
The transformation rules for the basic electrodynamical quantities are routinely derived from the hypothesis that the relativity principle (RP) applies for Maxwell's electrodynamics. These derivations leave open several questions: (1) Is the RP a true law of nature for electrodynamical phenomena? (2) Are, at least, the transformation rules of the fundamental electrodynamical quantities, derived from the RP, true? (3) Is the RP consistent with the laws of electrodynamics in one single inertial frame of reference? (4) Are, at least, the derived transformation rules consistent with the laws of el…
Fantappié-Arcidiacono projective relativity, also known as "de Sitter relativity", provides a formulation of mechanics according to which it is possible to identify an inertial frame of reference by means of kinematic methods. This article presents the hypothesis that inertial frames of reference originated during the so-called "archaic era" of the Universe. A simple mechanism is proposed for this process. Such a process could leave behind cosmic fluid granulation, which could manifest itself in the present Universe as a clustering of dark matter in galaxies.
Ball lightning is an impressive natural electromagnetic phenomenon occurring in atmosphere under suitable circumstances. Its origin, composition and stability issues are a matter of debate, due to presence of many evidences still unexplained. An attempt to provide a model, in alternative to the ones already available, is here presented. The aim is to interpret the phenomenon through a fluid plasma self-trapped in very stable toroid-shaped regions. To this end, a suitable adaptation of the equations ruling electrodynamics is taken into account.
A new model of nonlinear electrodynamics with two parameters is investigated. We also consider a model with one dimensional parameter. It was shown that the electric field of a point-like charge is not singular at the origin and there is the finiteness of the static electric energy of point-like charged particle. We obtain the canonical and symmetrical Belinfante energy-momentum tensors and dilatation currents. It is demonstrated that the dilatation symmetry and dual symmetry are broken in the models suggested. We have calculated the static electric energy of point-like particles.
A new model of nonlinear electrodynamics with three parameters is suggested and investigated. It is shown that if the external constant magnetic field presents the phenomenon of vacuum birefringence takes place. The indexes of refraction for two polarizations of electromagnetic waves, parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic induction field are calculated. The electric field of a point-like charge is not singular at the origin and the static electric energy is finite. We have calculated the static electric energy of point-like particles for different parameters of the model. The canonical an…
We explore the physical consequences of a new nonlinear electrodynamics, for which the electric field of a point-like charge is finite at the origin, as in the well-known Born-Infeld electrodynamics. However, contrary to the latter, in this new electrodynamics the phenomenon of birefringence and dichroism take place in the presence of external magnetic fields. Subsequently we study the interaction energy, within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. Interestingly enough, the static potential profile contains a linear potential leading to the confinement o…
A simple physical insight into the origin of the magnetic moment anomaly of electron is presented. This approach is based on the assumption that the electromagnetic mass of the electron due to the electric field generated by electron charge in the exterior of the sphere of radius half of the Compton wavelength of the electron, does not contribute to the magnetic moment of the electron. This explanation is compatible with the well-known quantum electrodynamics approach. A formula is derived, which is similar to that obtained by quantum electrodynamics calculus of one loop contribution to anomal…
Newton introduced the concept of mass in his {\it Principia} and gave an intuitive explanation for what it meant. Centuries have passed and physicists as well as philosophers still argue over its meaning. Three types of mass are generally identified: inertial mass, active gravitational mass and passive gravitational mass. In addition to the question of what role mass plays in dynamical equations and why, the origin of the particular amount of matter associated with an elementary particle as a consequence of fundamental fields has long been a topic of research and discussion. In this paper, var…
