We present energy spread and bunch length measurements at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK, as functions of current, for different ring rf voltages, and with the beam both on and off the coupling resonance. We fit the on-coupling bunch shapes to those of an impedance model consisting of a resistor and an inductor connected in series. We find that the fits are reasonably good, but that the resulting impedance is unexpectedly large.
This report presents bunch length and energy spread measurements performed in April 2000 at the ATF Damping Ring, at KEK. Measurements were performed with the beam on and then off the linear (difference) coupling resonance. Due to strong intra-beam scattering in the ATF ring, the results depended strongly on the coupling.
In April 2000 the single bunch energy spread, bunch length, horizontal emittance, and vertical emittance were measured as functions of current in KEK's ATF damping ring. In this report the measurement results are analyzed in light of intrabeam scattering theory. The measurements are found to be relatively consistent with theory, although the measured effects appear to be stronger than theory. In addition, the factor of 3 growth in vertical emittance at a current of 3 mA does not seem to be supported.
A double kicker system which extracts the ultra-low emittance multi-bunch beam stably from ATF damping ring was developed. The performance of the system was studied comparing an orbit jitter with single kicker extraction in single bunch mode. The position jitter reduction was estimated from the analysis of the extraction orbits. The reduction was confirmed for the double kicker system within a resolution of BPMs. More precise tuning of the system with a wire scanner has been tried by changing a beta function at the second kicker to get more reduction of kick angle jitter. The results of these …
KEK-ATF is studying the low-emittance multi-bunch electron beam for the future linear collider. In ATF, thermionic gun is used to generate 20 bunches electron beam with the bunch spacing of 2.8 ns. Due to a distortion of the gun emission and the beam loading effect in the bunching system, the intensity for each bunch is not uniform by up to 40 % at the end of the injector. We have developed a system to correct the gun emission by precisely controlling the cathode voltage with a function generator. For the beam loading effect, we have introduced RF amplitude modulation on Sub Harmonic Buncher, …
The wire scanners are used for a measurement of the very small beam size and the emittance in Accelerator Test Facility (ATF). They are installed in the extraction beam line of ATF damping ring. The extracted beam emittance are ex=1.3x10-9 m.rad, ey=1.7x10-11 m.rad with 2x109 electrons/bunch intensity and 1.3GeV energy. The wire scanners scan the beam by a tungsten wire with beam repetition 0.78Hz. The scanning speed is, however, very slow(~500um/sec). Since the extracted beam is quite stable by using the double kicker system, precision of the size measurement is less than 2um for 50 - 150um h…
We derive a simple relation for estimating the relative emittance growth in x and y due to intrabeam scattering (IBS) in electron storage rings. We show that IBS calculations for the ATF damping ring, when using the formalism of Bjorken-Mtingwa, a modified formalism of Piwinski (where eta squared divided by beta has been replaced by the dispersion invariant), or a simple high-energy approximate formula all give results that agree well. Comparing theory, including the effect of potential well bunch lengthening, with a complete set of ATF steady-state beam size vs. current measurements we find r…
Compton scattering provides one of the most promising scheme to obtain polarized positrons for the next generation of $e^-$ -- $e^+$ colliders. Moreover it is an attractive method to produce monochromatic high energy polarized gammas for nuclear applications and X-rays for compact light sources. In this framework a four-mirror Fabry-Pérot cavity has been installed at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF - KEK, Tsukuba, Japan) and is used to produce an intense flux of polarized gamma rays by Compton scattering \cite{ipac-mightylaser}. For electrons at the ATF energy (1.28 GeV) Compton scattering …
The upgrade project of Hefei Light Source storage ring is under way. In this paper, the broadband impedances of resistive wall and coated ceramic vacuum chamber were calculated using the analytic formula, the wake fields and impedances of other designed vacuum chambers have been simulated by the CST code, and then the broadband impedances model was obtained. Using the theoretical formula, longitudinal and transverse single bunch instabilities were discussed. With the carefully-designed vacuum chamber, we find that the thresholds of the beam instabilities are higher than the beam current goal.
Transverse instability of a bunched beam is investigated with synchrotron oscillations, space charge, and resistive wall wakefield taken into account. Boxcar model is used for all-round analysis, and Gaussian distribution is invoked for details. The beam spectrum, instability growth rate and effects of chromaticity are studied in a wide range of parameters, both with head-tail and collective bunch interactions included. Effects of the internal bunch oscillations on the of collective instabilities is investigated thoroughly. Landau damping caused by the space charge tune spread is discussed, an…
It is difficult for us to measure the Booster ring impedance up to the GHz range due to the instrumentation limit. Since the de-bunching process in the Linac to Booster transfer is determined by the complex impedance of the Booster ring, one can obtain an impedance model, which has the best match to the machine impedance, just by searching the optimal fit between the simulated and measured turn-by-turn resistive wall signal (RWS).
At the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK intrabeam scattering (IBS) is a strong effect for an electron machine. It is an effect that couples all dimensions of the beam, and in April 2000, over a short period of time, all dimensions were measured as functions of current. In this report we derive a simple relation for the growth rates of emittances due to IBS. We apply the theories of Bjorken-Mtingwa, Piwinski, and a formula due to Raubenheimer to the ATF parameters, and find that the results all agree (if in Piwinski's formalism we replace the dispersion squared over beta by the dispersion…
Which gain and phase have to be set for a bunch-by-bunch transverse damper, and at which chromaticity it is better to stay? These questions are considered for three models: the two-particle model with possible quadrupole wake, the author's Nested Head-Tail Vlasov solver with a broadband impedance, and the same with the LHC impedance model.
We have estimated contributions from the lossy and inductive vacuum chamber omponents to the broadband impedance of the NESTOR storage ring by using analytical formulas. As was expected considering the small ring circumference (15.44m), the main contributions both to the longitudinal impedance Z/n and the loss factor k come from the RF-cavity. Cavity impedance was also estimated with CST Microwave Studio (CST Studio Suite{TM} 2006) by simulating coaxial wire method commonly used for impedance measurements. Both estimates agree well. The upper limit of impedance of elliptic holes in the vacuum …
In this paper we present several techniques for characterizing longitudinal impedances based on transient measurements of the growth rates and tune shifts of unstable coupled-bunch modes. These techniques are applicable to measurement of both fundamental and higher-order mode impedances and allow characterization of shunt impedances and quality factors of the HOMs. Methods presented here are complementary to lab bench measurements of RF cavities, in that the beam based measurements directly sense the physical impedance in the installed configuration. In contrast to a single-bunch integrated im…
In this paper, we study single-bunch instabilities observed in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). According to the linearized Vlasov theory, radial or azimuthal mode-coupling instabilities result from a coupling of bunch-oscillation modes, which belong to either the same or adjacent azimuthal modes, respectively. We show that both instability mechanisms exist in the SPS by applying the Oide-Yokoya approach to compute van Kampen modes for the realistic longitudinal impedance model of the SPS. The results agree with macroparticle simulations and are consistent with beam measurements. In pa…
One of the key sources of transverse impedance in the LHC has been the secondary graphite collimators that sit close to the beam at all energies. This limits the stable bunch intensity due to transverse coupled-bunch instabilities and transverse mode coupling instability. To counteract this, new secondary collimators have been proposed for the phase II upgrade of the LHC collimation system. A number of designs based on different jaw materials and mechanical designs have been proposed. A comparison of the beam coupling impedance of these different designs derived from simulations are presented,…
Conditions for the existence, uniqueness and stability of self-consistent bunch steady states are considered. For the existence and uniqueness problems, simple algebraic criteria are derived for both the action and Hamiltonian domain distributions. For the stability problem, van Kampen theory is used. The onset of a discrete van Kampen mode means the emergence of a coherent mode without any Landau damping; thus, even a tiny couple-bunch or multi-turn wake is sufficient to drive the instability. The method presented here assumes an arbitrary impedance, RF shape, and beam distribution function. …
The concepts of wake fields and impedance are introduced to describe the electromagnetic interaction of a bunch of charged particles with its environment in an particle accelerator. The wake fields can act back on the beam and lead to instabilities, which may limit the achievable current per bunch, the total current, or even both. Some typical examples are used to illustrate the wake function and its basic properties. Then the frequency-domain view of the wake field or impedance is explained, and basic properties of the impedance are derived. The impedance of a cavity mode is illustrated using…
High frequency High Order Modes can significantly affect the coupled-bunch stability in a circular accelerator. With a large enough shunt impedance they may drive a coupled-bunch transverse instability. We have developed an analytical model and implemented it in the NHT Vlasov solver. The results show that the instability is characterized by the excitation of many azimuthal intra-bunch modes, which have similar growth rates, that make the traditional remedies such as a flat resistive feedback and chromaticity inefficient in suppressing it. For the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider this cou…
A semi-analytical model has been developed to study a combined effect of Beamstrahlung due to beam-beam interaction and beam coupling impedance in the future lepton colliders CEPC and FCCee. This model allows evaluating an impact of the coupling impedance on the bunch length and energy spread in collision. The model is benchmarked against numerical simulations. Analytical estimates for the supercolliders are presented.

A 60 MeV beam at the BNL Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) was manipulated by a planar tunable de-chirper made out of two 10 cm long dielectric slabs with copper plated backs. While the gap was changed from 5.8 mm to 1 mm, the correlated energy chirp of the low charge electron bunch was reduced from approximately 330 keV/mm to zero. This result is in agreement with simulations. Calculations show that similar devices, properly scaled to account for the expected electron bunch charge and length, can be used to remove residual correlated energy spread at the end of the linacs used for free-electron…
During the 2011 run of the LHC there was a significant measured temperature increase in the LHC Injection Kicker Magnets (MKI) during operation with 50ns bunch spacing. This was due to increased beam-induced heating of the magnet due to beam impedance. Due to concerns about future heating with the increased total intensity to nominal and ultimate luminosities a review of the impedance reduction techniques within the magnet was required. A number of new beam screen designs are proposed and their impedance evaluated. Heating estimates are also given with a particular attention paid to future int…
Van Kampen modes are eigen-modes of Jeans-Vlasov equation. Their spectrum consists of continuous and, possibly, discrete parts. Onset of a discrete van Kampen mode means emergence of a coherent mode without any Landau damping; thus, even a tiny couple-bunch wake is sufficient to drive instability. Longitudinal instabilities observed at Tevatron, RHIC and SPS can be explained as loss of Landau damping (LLD), which is shown here to happen at fairly low impedances. For repulsive wakes and single-harmonic RF, LLD is found to be extremely sensitive to steepness of the bunch distribution function at…
One of the key-issues to increase the luminosity in the next generation particle factories is to reduce the bunch length at the interaction point (IP) as much as possible. This will allow reducing proportionally the transverse beta functions at the IP and increasing the luminosity by the same factor. The strong RF focusing consists in obtaining short bunches by substantially increasing the lattice momentum compaction and the RF gradient. In this regime the bunch length is modulated along the ring and could be minimized at the IP. If the principal impedance generating elements of the ring are l…
With electron beam durations down to femtoseconds and sub-femtoseconds achievable in current state-of-the-art accelerators, longitudinal bunch length diagnostics with resolution at the attosecond level are required. In this paper, we present such a novel measurement device which combines a high power laser modulator with an RF deflecting cavity in the orthogonal direction. While the laser applies a strong correlated angular modulation to a beam, the RF deflector ensures the full resolution of this streaking effect across the bunch hence recovering the temporal beam profile with sub-femtosecond…
A luminosity of a circular collider can be increased by squeezing the bunch length at the interaction point (IP). A natural way to decrease the bunch length is to decrease the momentum compaction factor and/or to increase the RF voltage. However, in such a way we cannot obtain short bunches with high currents since wakefields prevent this due to the potential well distortion and the microwave instability. In present paper we propose to use a strong RF focusing (with high RF voltage and high momentum compaction factor) to obtain very short bunches at the IP with progressive bunch elongation tow…

In this article we derive longitudinal impedance and wake function for an undulator setup with arbitrary undulator parameter, taking into account a finite transverse size of the electron bunch. Earlier studies considered a line density-distribution of electrons instead. We focus our attention on the long-wavelength asymptote (compared with resonance wavelength), at large distance of the electron bunch from the undulator entrance compared to the overtaking length, and for large vacuum-chamber size compared to the typical transverse size of the field. These restrictions define a parameter region…
We consider the calculation of electromagnetic fields generated by an electron bunch passing through an anisotropic transversally non-homogeneous vacuum chamber of round or rectangular cross-section with translational symmetry in the beam direction. The described algorithms are implemented in a numerical code and cross-checked on several examples.
Landau damping of head-tail modes in bunches due to spreads in the tune shift can be a deciding factor for beam stability. We demonstrate that the coherent tune shifts due to reactive impedances can enhance the space-charge induced damping and change the stability thresholds (here, a reactive impedance implies the imaginary part of the impedance of both signs). For example, high damping rates at strong space-charge, or damping of the $k=0$ mode, can be possible. It is shown and explained, how the negative reactive impedances (causing negative coherent tune shifts similarly to the effect of spa…
We study the effect of a passive harmonic cavity, introduced to cause bunch lengthening, in an electron storage ring. We derive a formula for the induced voltage from such a cavity with high $Q$, excited by a a sequence of bunches, allowing for arbitrary gaps in the sequence and arbitrary currents. Except for a minor term that can be determined iteratively, the voltage is given in terms of a single mode of the Fourier transforms of the bunch forms, namely the mode at the resonant frequency of the cavity. Supposing that the only wake field is from the harmonic cavity, we derive a system of coup…
In the upgrade project of Hefei Light Source (HLS II), a new digital longitudinal bunch-by-bunch feedback system will be developed to suppress the coupled bunch instabilities in the storage ring effectively. We design a new waveguide overloaded cavity longitudinal feedback kicker as the feedback actuator. The beam pipe of the kicker is racetrack shape so as to avoid a transition part to the octagonal vacuum chamber. The central frequency and the bandwidth of the kicker have been simulated and optimized to achieve design goals by the HFSS code. The higher shunt impedance can be obtained by usin…
KEK-ATF is studying low emittance, multi-bunch electron beam for the future linear collider. The energy instability of the 1.5 GeV linac has been a problem making the beam injection to the damping ring unstable. Because the unstable beam generates also large amount of the radiation, the beam current is limited by the KEK radiation safety policy much lower than what we expect. Stabilizing the S-band linac is therefore important not only to improve the beam quality, but also to clear the radiation safety limit to start the multi-bunch operation. We have made various modifications to solve the pr…
Electron accelerators with higher and higher longitudinal field gradients are desirable, as they allow for the production of high energy beams by means of compact and cheap setups. The new laser-plasma acceleration technique appears to constitute the more promising breakthrough in this direction, delivering unprecedent field gradients up to TV/m. In this article we give a quantitative description of the impact of longitudinal wake fields on the electron beam. Our paper is based on the solution of Maxwell's equations for the longitudinal field. Our conclusions are valid when the acceleration di…
The CLIC damping rings will produce ultra-low emittance beam, with high bunch charge, necessary for the luminosity performance of the collider. To limit the beam emittance blow-up due to oscillations, the pulse power modulators for the damping ring kickers must provide extremely flat, high-voltage pulses: specifications call for a 160 ns duration and a flattop of 12.5 kV, 250 A, with a combined ripple and droop of not more than \pm0.02 %. The stripline design is also extremely challenging: the field for the damping ring kicker system must be homogenous to within \pm0.01 % over a 1 mm radius, a…
