In designing linear accelerator structures for multi-bunch applications we are often interested in estimating the effect of relatively weak multi-bunch beam break-up (BBU), due to the somewhat complicated wakefields of detuned structures. This, for example, is the case for the injector linacs of the JLC/NLC linear collider project. Deriving an analytical formula for such a problem is the subject of this report.
The characteristics of the high-intensity single-bunch electron beam of the 38 MeV L-band electron linac at the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research in Osaka University were investigated.
It is difficult for us to measure the Booster ring impedance up to the GHz range due to the instrumentation limit. Since the de-bunching process in the Linac to Booster transfer is determined by the complex impedance of the Booster ring, one can obtain an impedance model, which has the best match to the machine impedance, just by searching the optimal fit between the simulated and measured turn-by-turn resistive wall signal (RWS).
Femtosecond bunch is a hot topic in the present world accelerator research community. The high peak current bunch will lead to the beam breakup phenomenon. In this paper, the scaling law with current for the single ultrashort bunch beam breakup in the radio frequency linear accelerator is proposed and obtained. The scaling power factor is roughly estimated to be 1/6, 1/6 and 1/3 for the geometry wake, the surface roughness wake and the resistance wake respectively.
Compensation of multi-bunch beam loading is of great importance in the main linac of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). The bunch-to-bunch energy variation has to stay below 1 part in 1000. In CLIC, the RF power is obtained by decelerating a drive beam which is formed by merging a number of short bunch trains. A promising scheme for tackling beam loading in the main linac is based on varying the lengths of the bunch trains in the drive beam. The scheme and its expected performance are presented.
In order to double the positron injection rate into the KEKB ring, a two-bunch acceleration scheme has been studied at the linac, in which bunches separated by 96 ns are accelerated in 50 Hz. In this scheme the stabilization of energy and orbit of each bunch is indispensable. Thus the beam energy and orbit feedback systems have been upgraded. Since beam characteristics are acquired through beam position monitors (BPM), their read-out system was improved to meet two-bunch requirements. Combined waveforms from BPM's were adjusted with delay cables avoiding overlaps and they enabled simultaneous …
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) project at SLAC uses a dense 15 GeV electron beam passing through a long undulator to generate extremely bright x-rays at 1.5 angstroms. The project requires electron bunches with a nominal peak current of 3.5kA and bunch lengths of 0.020mm (70fs). The bunch compression techniques used to achieve the high brightness impose challenging tolerances on the accelerator RF phase and amplitude. The results of measurements on the existing SLAC linac RF phase and amplitude stability are summarised and improvements needed to meet the LCLS tolerances are discussed.
We present the design of a high repetition rate MeV energy ultrafast electron diffraction instrument based on a DC photoelectron gun and an SRF linac with multiple independently controlled accelerating and bunching cavities. The design is based on the existing Cornell photoinjector, which can readily be applied to the presented findings. Using particle tracking simulations in conjunction with multiobjective genetic algorithm optimization, we explore the smallest bunch lengths, emittance, and probe spot sizes achievable. We present results for both stroboscopic conditions (with single electrons…
The main linacs of the Next Linear Collider (NLC) will contain several thousand X-band RDDS (Rounded Damped Detuned Structures). The transverse wakefield in the structures is reduced by detuning the modal frequencies such that they destructively interfere and by four damping manifolds per structure which provide weak damping. Errors in the fabrication of the individual cells and in the alignment of the cells will reduce the cancellation of the modes. Here, we calculate the tolerances on random errors in the synchronous frequencies of the cells and the cell-to-cell alignment.
An amplitude and phase compensation system has been developed and tested at the University of Hawai`i for the optimization of the RF drive system to the Mark V Free-Electron Laser. Temporal uniformity of the RF drive is essential to the generation of an electron beam suitable for optimal free-electron laser performance and the operation of an inverse Compton scattering x-ray source. The design of the RF measurement and compensation system is described in detail and the results of RF phase compensation are presented. Performance of the free-electron laser was evaluated by comparing the measured…
Recirculating energy recovery linacs are a promising technology for delivering high power particle beams ($\sim$GW) while only requiring low power ($\sim$kW) RF sources. This is achieved by decelerating the used bunches and using the energy they deposit in the accelerating structures to accelerate new bunches. We present studies of the impact of the bunch packet filling pattern on the performance of the accelerating RF system. We perform RF beam loading simulations under various noise levels and beam loading phases with different injection schemes. We also present a mathematical description of…
FAST is a facility at Fermilab that consists of a photoinjector, two superconducting capture cavities, one superconducting ILC-style cryomodule, and a small ring for studying non-linear, integrable beam optics called IOTA. This paper discusses the layout for the optical transport system that provides optical radiation to an externally located streak camera for bunch length measurements, and THz radiation to a Martin-Puplett interferometer, also for bunch length measurements. It accepts radiation from two synchrotron radiation ports in a chicane bunch compressor and a diffraction/transition rad…
This paper describes a design for the front end of a superconducting (SC) ion linac which can accept and simultaneously accelerate two charge states of uranium from an ECR ion source. This mode of operation increases the beam current available for the heaviest ions by a factor of two. We discuss the 12 MeV/u prestripper section of the Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) driver linac including the LEBT, RFQ, MEBT and SC sections, with a total voltage of 112 MV. The LEBT consists of two bunchers and electrostatic quadrupoles. The fundamental frequency of both bunchers is half of the RFQ frequency. Th…
We present a detailed study of the six-dimensional phase space of the electron beam produced by the Cornell Energy Recovery Linac Photoinjector, a high-brightness, high repetition rate (1.3 GHz) DC photoemission source designed to drive a hard x-ray energy recovery linac (ERL). A complete simulation model of the injector has been constructed, verified by measurement, and optimized. Both the horizontal and vertical 2D transverse phase spaces, as well as the time-resolved (sliced) horizontal phase space, were simulated and directly measured at the end of the injector for 19 pC and 77 pC bunches …
In this paper, we propose to use the LWFA as the preinjector for XFEL driver linac. We can use LWFA to produce the femtosecond electron beam. The peak current of the produced beam can reach tens of $kA$ and is high enough to drive XFEL so that the present bunch compressing technique can be deserted. The output optical pusle length can be as short as $ 1 fs $.
The CLIC linear collider aims at accelerating multiple bunches of electrons and positrons and colliding them at a centre of mass energy of 3 TeV. These bunches will be accelerated through X-band linacs, operating at an accelerating frequency of 12 GHz. Each beam readily excites wake-fields within the accelerating cavities of each linac. The transverse components of the wake-fields, if left unchecked, can dilute the beam emittance. The present CLIC design relies on heavy damping of these wake-fields in order to ameliorate the effects of the wake-fields on the beam emittance. Here we present ini…
For the characterization of the 10 mA ion beam delivered by the new High Current Linac at GSI, sophisticated, mainly non-intersepting diagnostic devices were developed. Besides the general set-up of a versatile test bench, we discuss in particular bunch shape and emittance measurements. A direct time-of-flight technique with a diamond particle detector is used to observe the micro-bunch distribution with a resolution of $\sim 25 $ ps equals 0.3$^{o}$ in phase. For the determination of the energy spread a coincidence technique is applied, using secondary electrons emitted by the ion passing thr…
The injector linacs of the JLC/NLC project include the prelinac, the e+ drive linac, the $e- booster, and the $e+ booster. The first three will be S-band machines, the last one, an L-band machine. We have demonstrated that by using detuning alone in the accelerator structure design of these linacs we will have acceptable tolerances for emittance growth due to both injection jitter and structure misalignments, for both the nominal (2.8ns) and alternate (1.4ns) bunch spacings.
In the NLC project multiple bunches of electrons and positrons will be accelerated initially to a centre of mass of 500 GeV and later to 1 TeV or more. In the process of accelerating 192 bunches within a pulse train, wakefields are excited which kick the trailing bunches off axis and can cause luminosity dilution and BBU (Beam Break Up). Several structures to damp the wakefield have been designed and tested at SLAC and KEK and these have been found to successfully damp the wakefield [1]. However, these 2pi/3 structures suffered from electrical breakdown and this has prompted us to explore lowe…
Free Electron Lasers driven by Super-Conducting Linacs require the generation, acceleration and transport of trains of bunches with high charge, high repetition rate and low emittance. A numerical model already developed for the modeling of beam dynamics in SC Linacs has been now extended to treat RF guns with proper description of the photocathode bunch generation. The model algorithm is based on a coupled integration of Newton and Maxwell equations under a slowly varying envelope approximation for the time evolution of mode amplitudes in the accelerating structure and an envelope equation de…
The parameters for a 30 GeV test beam are outlined for use with an undulator in the FFTB tunnel where the LCLS will eventually be housed. It is proposed to use the SLAC linac and damping rings in their present mode of operation for PEP II injection, where 30 GeV beams are also delivered at 10 Hz to the FFTB. High peak currents are obtained with the addition of a second bunch compressor in the linac. In order to minimize the synchrotron radiation induced emittance growth in the bunch compressor it is necessary to locate the new bunch compressor at the low-energy end of the linac, just after the…
We present the results of transverse emittance and longitudinal current profile measurements of high bunch charge (greater than or equal to 100 pC) beams produced in the DC gun-based Cornell Energy Recovery Linac Photoinjector. In particular, we show that the cathode thermal and core beam emittances dominate the final 95% and core emittance measured at 9-9.5 MeV. Additionally, we demonstrate excellent agreement between optimized 3D space charge simulations and measurement, and show that the quality of the transverse laser distribution limits the optimal simulated and measured emittances. These…
Here we will derive the general theory of the beam-breakup instability in recirculating linear accelerators, in which the bunches do not have to be at the same RF phase during each recirculation turn. This is important for the description of energy recovery linacs (ERLs) where bunches are recirculated at a decelerating phase of the RF wave and for other recirculator arrangements where different RF phases are of an advantage. Furthermore it can be used for the analysis of phase errors of recirculated bunches. It is shown how the threshold current for a given linac can be computed and a remarkab…
As the pre-injector of the LHC injector chain, the proton linac at CERN is required to provide a high-intensity (180mA) beam to the Proton Synchrotron Booster. The results of measurements at this intensity will be presented. Furthermore, the linac is now equipped with bunch shape monitors from INR, Moscow, which have allowed the comparison of the Alvarez tank RF settings with simulations.
Fermilab is committed to upgrade its accelerator complex to support HEP experiments at the intensity frontier. The ongoing Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) enables us to reach 700 kW beam power on the NuMI neutrino targets. By the end of the next decade, the current 400 MeV normal conducting LINAC will be replaced by an 800 MeV superconducting LINAC (PIP-II) with an increased beam power >50% of the PIP design goal. Both in PIP and PIP-II era, the existing Booster is going to play a very significant role, at least for next two decades. In the meanwhile, we have recently developed an innovative bea…
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is collaborating with Arizona State University to design a LLRF system towards the advancement of the ASU Compact X-ray Light Source (CXLS). The CXLS is a phased project to develop small brilliant x-ray sources that may produce coherent x-rays appropriate as a seed source for LCLS and LCLS II. The CXLS electron beam is produced by an x-band photoinjector and linac operating at 9.3 GHz RF frequency and 1 kHz repetition rate with up to 300 pC per bunch. The linac consists of 3 short 20-cell sections of standing wave linac. The RF gun and linac sections are po…
The linear accelerator (LINAC) at the Los Alamos Neu-tron Science Center (LANSCE) consists of Pre-buncher, Main-Buncher, low-energy beam transport (LEBT), four 201.25-MHz Drift Tube Linacs (DTLs) and forty-four 805-MHz Coupled Cavity Linacs (CCLs). As a part of the upcoming LANSCE Modernization project, low-level RF (LLRF) systems of four 201-MHz DTLs and twenty-six 805-MHz SCLs have been digitized. Hence the net-work-based control of the cavity field and RF commis-sioning are possible. Each LLRF and high-power RF (HPRF) systems have many process variables (PVs) lo-cated on different computer …
In laser illuminated dielectric accelerators (DLA) high acceleration gradients can be achieved due to high damage thresholds of the materials at optical frequencies. This is a necessity for developing more compact particle accelerator technologies. The Accelerator on a CHip International Program (ACHIP) funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is researching such devices. DESY Hamburg is part of the collaboration. The dedicated accelerator research facility SINBAD is particularly well suited for DLA experiments at relativistic electron energies. High quality beams and short bunch length…
ARES (Accelerator Research Experiment at SINBAD) is a linear accelerator at the SINBAD (Short INnovative Bunches and Accelerators at DESY) facility at DESY. ARES was designed to combine reproducible beams from conventional RF-based accelerator technology with novel but still experimental acceleration techniques. It aims to produce high brightness ultra-short electron bunches in the range of sub fs to few fs, at a beam energy of 100-150 MeV, suitable for injection into novel acceleration experiments like Dielectric Laser Acceleration (DLA) and Laser driven Plasma Acceleration (LPA). This paper …
Realization of a short bunch beam by manipulating the longitudinal phase space distribution with a finite longitudinal dispersion following an off-crest accelera- tion is a widely used technique. The technique was applied in a compact test accelerator of an energy-recovery linac scheme for compressing the bunch length at the return loop. A diagnostic system utilizing coherent transition radiation was developed for the beam tuning and for estimating the bunch length. By scanning the beam parameters, we experimentally found the best condition for the bunch compression. The RMS bunch length of 25…
A common-mode free cavity BPM is currently under development at Fermilab within the ILC-CLIC collaboration. This monitor will be operated in a CLIC Main Linac multi-bunch regime, and needs to provide both, high spatial and time resolution. We present the design concept, numerical analysis, investigation on tolerances and error effects, as well as simulations on the signal response applying a multi-bunch stimulus.
We describe a compact THz-pump and X-ray-probe beamline, based on an electron linac, for ultrafast time-resolved diffraction applications. Two high-energy electron ($γ>50$) bunches, $5~$ns apart, impinge upon a single-foil or a multifoil radiator and generate THz radiation and X-rays simultaneously. The THz pulse from the first bunch is synchronized to the X-ray beam of the second bunch by using an adjustable optical delay of THz pulse. The peak power of THz radiation from the multifoil radiator is estimated to be $0.14~$GW for a $200~$pC well-optimized electron bunch. GEANT4 simulations show …
The Drive Beam Linac of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) has to accelerate an electron beam with 4.2 A up to 2.4 GeV in almost fully-loaded structures. The pulse contains about 70000 bunches, one in every second rf bucket, and has a length of 140 $μ$s. The beam stability along the beamline is of concern for such a high current and pulse length. We present different options for the lattice of the linac based on FODO, triplet and doublet cells and compare the transverse instability for each lattice including the effects of beam jitter, alignment and beam-based correction. Additionally longitud…
Characterization of relativistic electron bunch duration and travelling wave structure phase velocity based on momentum spectra measurements on the ARES linac at DESY
A possible solution to realize a conventional positron source driven by a several-GeV electron beam for the International Linear Collider is proposed. A 300 Hz electron linac is employed to create positrons with stretching pulse length in order to cure target thermal load. ILC requires about 2600 bunches in a train which pulse length is 1 ms. Each pulse of the 300 Hz linac creates about 130 bunches, then 2600 bunches are created in 63 ms. Optimized parameters such as drive beam energy, beam size, and target thickness, are discussed assuming a L-band capture system to maximize the capture effic…
KEK-ATF is studying low emittance, multi-bunch electron beam for the future linear collider. The energy instability of the 1.5 GeV linac has been a problem making the beam injection to the damping ring unstable. Because the unstable beam generates also large amount of the radiation, the beam current is limited by the KEK radiation safety policy much lower than what we expect. Stabilizing the S-band linac is therefore important not only to improve the beam quality, but also to clear the radiation safety limit to start the multi-bunch operation. We have made various modifications to solve the pr…
An asynchronous accelerator is described, in which the principle of its operation permits the active longitudinal bunch compression of accelerated proton beams, to overcome the space charge limitation effects of intense bunches. It is shown that accelerated bunches from an RFQ linac can be adapted for Asynchronac injection for a multiple of choices in the acceleration frequencies of the RFQ and the Asynchronac. The offered new type of accelerator system is especially suitable to accelerate proton beams for up to 100MeV energy and hundreds of mA average current.
The RadiaBeam/SLAC dechirper, a structure consisting of pairs of flat, metallic, corrugated plates, %a corrugated structure in flat geometry, has been installed just upstream of the undulators in the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). As a dechirper, with the beam passing between the plates on axis, longitudinal wakefields are induced that can remove unwanted energy chirp in the beam. However, with the beam passing off axis, strong transverse wakes are also induced. This mode of operation has already been used for the production of intense, multi-color photon beams using the Fresh-Slice techn…
With a low emittance and short-bunch electron beam at a high repetition rate realized by a superconducting linac, stimulated excitation of an optical cavity at the terahertz spectrum range has been shown. The electron beam passed through small holes in the cavity mirrors without being destroyed. A sharp resonance structure which indicated wide-band stimulated emission via coherent diffraction radiation was observed while scanning the round-trip length of the cavity.
A dielectric-loaded linac powered by THz-pulses is one of the key parts of the "Attosecond X-ray Science: Imaging and Spectroscopy" (AXSIS) project at DESY, Hamburg. As in conventional accelerators, the AXSIS linac is designed to have phase velocity equal to the speed of light which, in this case, is realized by tuning the thickness of the dielectric layer and the radius of the vacuum channel. Therefore, structure fabrication errors will lead to a change in the beam dynamics and beam quality. Additionally, errors in the bunch injection will also affect the acceleration process and can cause be…
Generally, Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) needs special designed high current superconducting RF cavities. In this paper, the threshold current of BBU for compact ERL facilities with 9-cell Tesla type cavities are investigated. The results show that it is feasible to adopt 9-cell Tesla cavity for compact ERL test facilities with just a few cavities and beam current around tens mA.
Microbunching instability usually exists in the linear accelerator (linac) of a free electron laser (FEL) facility. If it is not controlled effectively, the beam quality will be damaged seriously and the machine will not operate properly. In the electron linac of a soft X-Ray FEL device, because the electron energy is not very high, the problem can become even more serious. As a typical example, the microbunching instability in the linac of the proposed Shanghai Soft X-ray Free Electron Laser facility (SXFEL) is investigated in detail by means of both analytical formulae and simulation tools. …
Higher-order mode (HOM) based intra-cavity beam diagnostics has been proved effectively and conveniently in superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) accelerators. Our recent research shows that the beam harmonics in the bunch train excited HOM spectrum, which have much higher signal-to-noise ratio than the intrinsic HOM peaks, may also be useful for beam diagnostics. In this paper, we will present our study on bunch train excited HOMs, including the theoretic model and recent experiments carried out based on the DC-SRF photoinjector and SRF linac at Peking University.
Fermilab is planning the construction of a prototype front end of the Project X linac. The Project X Injector Experiment (PXIE) is expected to accelerate 1 mA cw H- beam up to 30 MeV. Some of the major goals of the project are to test a cw RFQ and H- source, a broadband bunch-by-bunch beam chopper and a low-energy superconducting linac. The successful characterization and operation of such an accelerator places stringent requirements on beam line diagnostics. These crucial beam measurements include bunch currents, beam orbit, beam phase, bunch length, transverse profile and emittance, beam hal…
The PLS-II has a 100 MeV pre-injector for the 3 GeV Linac. A thermionic gun produces electron charge of 200 pC with a bunch duration of 500 ps by a 250 ps triggering pulser. At the pre-injector, one of the most important beam parameters to identify the beam quality is a transverse emittance of electron bunches. Therefore we measure the beam emittance and twiss functions at 100 MeV in order to match the beam optics to beam transport line and go through it to the storage ring. To get the transverse emittance measurement, well-known technique, quadrupole scan, is used at the pre-injector. The emi…
In this paper, we propose a scheme to generate tunable coherent X-ray radiation for future light source applications. This scheme uses an energy chirped electron beam, a laser modulator, a laser chirper and two bunch compressors to generate a prebunched kilo-Ampere current electron beam from a few tens Ampere electron beam out of a linac. The initial modulation energy wavelength can be compressed by a factor of $1+h_b R_{56}^a$ in phase space, where $h_b$ is the energy bunch length chirp introduced by the laser chirper, $R_{56}^a$ is the momentum compaction factor of the first bunch compressor…
The disassembly of the Unilac prestripper linac of the Wideroe type took place at the beginning of 1999. An increase of more than two orders of magnitude in particle number for the most heavy elements in the SIS had to be gained. Since that time the new High Current Injector (HSI) consisting of H-type RFQ and DTL-structures for dual beam operation was installed and successfully commissioned. The High Charge Injector (HLI) supplied the main linac during that time. Simultaneously conditioning and running in of the rf-transmitters and rf-structures were done. The HSI commissioning strategy includ…
A 60 MeV beam at the BNL Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) was manipulated by a planar tunable de-chirper made out of two 10 cm long dielectric slabs with copper plated backs. While the gap was changed from 5.8 mm to 1 mm, the correlated energy chirp of the low charge electron bunch was reduced from approximately 330 keV/mm to zero. This result is in agreement with simulations. Calculations show that similar devices, properly scaled to account for the expected electron bunch charge and length, can be used to remove residual correlated energy spread at the end of the linacs used for free-electron…
The generation of the ultra-bright beams required by modern accelerators and drivers of free-electron lasers (FELs) has generally relied on chicane-based bunch compressions that often result in the microbunching instability. Following compression, spectral enhancements extend even into the visible wavelengths through the longitudinal space charge (LSC) impedances. Optical transition radiation (OTR) screens have been extensively used for transverse electron beam size measurements for the bright beams, but the presence of such longitudinal microstructures (microbunching) in the electron beam or …
KEK-ATF is doing R&D establishing high-current and low-emittance electron beam for the future linear colliders. In ATF, 15 ps length electron beam is generated by combination of a thermionic gun, a couple of 357 MHz SHBs, and a S-band TW buncher. In the linac, beam instability caused by the fluctuated amplitude and phase of SHBs has been observed. The reason of the fluctuation is considered to be the multi-pacting in the SHB cavity. In addition, Q value of the cavity is almost half of the designed value, then SHBs are not operated in an optimum condition. We have fabricated new SHBs with consi…
We report results of the beam commissioning and first operation of the 1.3 GHz superconducting RF electron linear accelerator at Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility. Construction of the linac was completed and the machine was commissioned with beam in 2017. The maximum total beam energy of about 300 MeV was achieved with the record energy gain of 250 MeV in the ILC-type SRF cryomodule. The photoinjector was tuned to produce trains of 200 pC bunches with a frequency of 3 MHz at a repetition rate of 1 Hz. This report describes the aspects of machine commissioning such as …
Collinear high-gradient ${\cal O} (GV/m)$ beam-driven wakefield methods for charged-particle acceleration could be critical to the realization of compact, cost-efficient, accelerators, e.g., in support of TeV-scale lepton colliders or multiple-user free-electron laser facilities. To make these options viable, the high accelerating fields need to be complemented with large transformer ratios $>2$, a parameter characterizing the efficiency of the energy transfer between a wakefield-exciting "drive" bunch to an accelerated "witness" bunch. While several potential current distributions have been d…
In synchrotron machines, the beam extraction is accomplished by a combination of septa and kicker magnets which deflect the beam from an accelerator into another. Ideally the kicker field must rise/fall in between the beam bunches. However, in reality, an intentional beam-free time region (aka "notch") is created on the beam pulse to assure that the beam can be extracted with minimal losses. In the case of the Fermilab Booster, the notch is created in the ring near injection energy by the use of fast kickers which deposit the beam in a shielded collimation region within the accelerator tunnel.…
Interaction between the bunches in the NLC main linac via long range wakefields can cause a beam breakup instability. Although the magnitude of the long range wakefields for an ideal NLC structure is below the instability threshold, the wake increases when structure manufacturing errors are taken into account. In case of large errors, the developing instability can result in the projected emittance dilution of the bunch train. To suppress the instability, we propose to introduce an energy spread between the bunches, similar to the BNS energy spread for damping of the beam breakup within a sing…
Beam breakup instability is a potential issue for all particle accelerators and is often the limiting factor for the maximum beam current that can be achieved. This is particularly relevant for Energy Recovery Linacs with multiple passes where a relatively small amount of charge can result in a large beam current. Recent studies have shown that the choice of filling pattern and recirculation scheme for a multi-pass energy recovery linac can drastically affect the interactions between the beam and RF system. In this paper we further explore this topic to study how filling patterns affect the be…
