Polarization dynamics of femtosecond light pulses propagating in air is studied by computer simulation. A rich variety of dynamics is found that depends on the initial polarization state and power of the pulse. Effects of polarization on the plasma and supercontinuum generation are also discussed.
We report experiments on the generation of third and fifth harmonics of millijoule-level, tightly focused, femtosecond laser pulses at 2.2 μm wavelength in air. The measured ratio of yields of the third and fifth harmonics in our setup is about 2 \cdot 10-4. This result contradicts the recent suggestion that the Kerr effect in air saturates and changes sign in ultra-intense optical fields.
In a single shot, we measure the full propagation path, including the evolution to pulse collapse, of a high power femtosecond laser pulse propagating in air. This technique enables single-shot examination of the effect of parameters that fluctuate on a shot-to-shot basis, such as pulse energy, pulse duration, and air turbulence-induced refractive index perturbations. We find that even in lab air over relatively short propagation distances, turbulence plays a significant role in determining the location of pulse collapse.
Femtosecond laser filament generates strong terahertz (THz) pulse in air. In this paper, THz pulse waveform generated by femtosecond laser filament has been experimentally investigated as a function of the length of the filament. Superluminal propagation of THz pulse has been uncovered, indicating that the filament creates a THz waveguide in air. Numerical simulation has confirmed that the waveguide is formed because of the radially non-uniform refractive index distribution inside the filament. The underlying physical mechanisms and the control techniques of this type THz pulse generation meth…
We experimentally demonstrate energy exchange between a delay-tuned femtosecond beam and two delay-fixed ones as they spatiotemporally overlapped and experienced filamentation in air. The energy exchange process in the relative time delay is dramatically elongated up to 40 ps in the presence of plasma grating, indicating that filamentary beams coupling may be an effective method for filament control.
An influence of pass-through optics on femtosecond laser pulse filamentation in ambient air is analyzed for the first time both experimentally and numerically. Propagation of high-power femtosecond laser pulse through solid optical elements introduces spatiotemporal phase modulation due to the Kerr effect. This modulation may have a strong ef-fect on the pulse filamentation in air. We demonstrated that the phase modulation obtained in the thin pass-through dielectric plate reduces the distance to the filament onset and increases the plasma channel length
The filamentational instability of spatially broadband femtosecond optical pulses in air is investigated by means of a kinetic wave equation for spatially incoherent photons. An explicit expression for the spatial amplification rate is derived and analyzed. It is found that the spatial spectral broadening of the pulse can lead to stabilization of the filamentation instability. Thus, optical smoothing techniques could optimize current applications of ultra-short laser pulses, such as atmospheric remote sensing.
We report on the lasing in air and pure nitrogen gas pumped by a single 800 nm femtosecond laser pulse. Depending on gas pressure, incident laser power and beam convergence, different lasing lines are observed in the forward direction with rapid change of their relative intensities. The lines are attributed to transitions between vibrational and rotational levels of the first negative band of the singly charged nitrogen molecule-ion. We show that self-seeding plays an important role in the observed intensity changes.
Polarization dependence on clamping intensity inside femtosecond filament was experimentally measured in air. By tuning the laser pulse ellipse from linear polarization to circular polarization, the measured clamping intensity inside laser filament is gradually increased up to 1.7 times. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation results by solving the extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). The polarization sensitive clamping intensity inside filaments offers an important factor towards fully understanding the polarization related phenomenon observed so far.
The results of investigation of extremely compressed wave packet-light bullet (LB) penetration through an air gap under single-pulse femtosecond Mid IR filamentation in LiF are presented. It is revealed by the laser coloration method and from numerical simulations that a single-cycle LB, which was formed before an air gap up to 0.5 mm width, completely recovered after passing some distance in LiF after the gap. This distance increases nonlinearly with the gap width and LB pathway before the gap. LB in the air gap has a strongly convergent wave front with focusing radius of 20-100 μm and its di…
We report on experimental realization of impulsive rotational Raman scattering from neutral nitrogen molecules in a femtosecond laser filament using an intense self-induced white-light seeding "air laser" generated during the filamentation of an 800 nm Ti: Sapphire laser in nitrogen gas. The impulsive rotational Raman fingerprint signals are observed with a maximum conversion efficiency of ~0.8%. Our observation provides a promising way of remote identification and location of chemical species in atmosphere by rotational Raman scattering of molecules.
We experimentally investigate generation of backward 357 nm N2 laser in a gas mixture of N2/Ar using 800-nm femtosecond laser pulses, and examine the involved gain dynamics based on pump-probe measurements. Our findings show that a minimum lifetime of population inversion in the excited N2 molecules is required for generating intense backward nitrogen lasers, which is ~0.8 ns under our experimental conditions. The results shed new light on the mechanism for generating intense backward lasers from ambient air, which are highly in demand for high sensitivity remote atmospheric sensing applicatio…
Terahertz (THz) imaging provides cutting edge technique in biology, medical sciences and non-destructive evaluation. However, due to the long wavelength of the THz wave, the obtained resolution of THz imaging is normally a few hundred microns and is much lower than that of the traditional optical imaging. We introduce a sub-wavelength resolution THz imaging technique which uses the THz radiation generated by a femtosecond laser filament in air as the probe. This method is based on the fact that the femtosecond laser filament forms a waveguide for the THz wave in air. The diameter of the THz be…
We report on strong backward stimulated emission at 337 nm in Nitrogen gas pumped by circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm. A distinct dependence of the backward UV spectrum on pump laser polarization and intensity is observed, pointing to the occurrence of backward amplified spontaneous emission inside filaments. We attribute the population inversion to inelastic collision between the free electrons produced by the pump laser and neutral N2 molecules. The addition of Oxygen molecules is detrimental for the gain, reducing it to near threshold at atmospheric concentration.
We demonstrate a novel method to measure the temporal evolution of electric fields with optical frequencies. Our technique is based on the detection of transient currents in air plasma. These directional currents result from sub-cycle ionization of air with a short pump pulse, and the steering of the released electrons with the pulse to be sampled. We assess the validity of our approach by comparing it with different state-of-the-art laser-pulse characterization techniques. Notably, our method works in ambient air and facilitates a direct measurement of the field waveform, which can be viewed …
We present direct measurements of the gas acoustic dynamics following interaction of spatial single- and multi-mode 50 fs, 800 nm pulses in air at 10 Hz and 1 kHz repetition rates. Results are in excellent agreement with hydrodynamic simulations. Under no conditions for single filaments do we find on-axis enhancement of gas density; this occurs only with multi-filaments. We also investigate the propagation of probe beams in the gas density profile induced by a single extended filament. We find that light trapping in the expanding annular acoustic wave can create the impression of on-axis guidi…
The propagation of high-power femtosecond laser pulses in air under conditions of superposed spatial phase modulation is considered theoretically. The numerical simulations are carried out on the basis of the reduced form of nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) for time-averaged electric field envelope. Initial spatial modulations are applied to pulse wavefront profiling by a staggered (TEM33) phase plate which is simulated numerically. The dynamics of laser pulse self-focusing, filamentation, and post-filamentation self-channeling after the phase plates with variable phase jumps is studied. …
High-power femtosecond laser radiation propagates nonlinearly in air exhibiting pulse self-focusing and strong multiphoton medium ionization, which leads to the spatial fragmentation of laser pulse into highly-localized light channels usually called the filaments. The filaments are characterized by high optical intensity, reduced (even zero) angular spreading and can contain laser plasma or be plasmaless (postfilaments). The presence of optical turbulence on the propagation path dramatically changes pulse filamentation dynamics and in some cases causes pulse fragmentation enhancement and colla…
We report on the lasing action of atmospheric air pumped by an 800 nm femtosecond laser pulse with peak power up to 4 TW. Lasing emission at 428 nm increases rapidly over a small range of pump laser power, followed by saturation above ~ 1.5 TW. The maximum lasing pulse energy is measured to be 2.6 uJ corresponding to an emission power in the MW range, while a maximum conversion efficiency of is measured at moderate pump pulse energy. The optical gain inside the filament plasma is estimated to be excess of 0.7/cm. The lasing emission shows a doughnut profile, reflecting the spatial distribution…
In this work, sub-ppb aerosol detection is achieved by femtosecond laser filament with a single pulse energy of 4 mJ at a distance of 30 m. A concave mirror with an open aperture of 41.4 cm is employed in an off-axis optical system to focus the femtosecond laser beam and collect the fluorescence of NaCl aerosol. The simulation and experimental results show that the astigmatism can be greatly reduced when femtosecond laser beam is incident non-symmetrically on the concave mirror. Compared with the case that femtosecond laser strikes at the center of the concave mirror, the intensity of the opti…
The conventional semi-empirical formula for collapse distance [Phys. Rev. 179, 862 (1969), Prog. Quant. Electr. 4, 35 (1975)] has been widely used in many applications. However, it is not applicable when the dispersion length is smaller than or has similar order-of-magnitude as the collapse distance. For the "enough short" pulses, there exists a threshold for the initial peak power, with which the collapse distance has a maximum value due to the competition between the Kerr self-focusing and the group velocity dispersion. New semi-empirical formulas are obtained for the collapse distance of th…
We have demonstrated the fabrication and characterization of 2D liquid-based multimode optical waveguide structures over a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) material-based chip. Fabrication of two separate microstructures, one with a width of 14 microns and a depth of 27 microns while the other with a width as well as depth of 110 microns, was achieved by the femtosecond laser micromachining process. The dye solution is passed through the microstructure from one end to the other; wherein the dye solution acts as the core while PDMS and air act as the cladding medium. The femtosecond laser micromachi…
Multiple filamentation in air of high-power ultrashort laser radiation with transverse intensity profile resembling a "corona" composed by incoherent combining of several annularly distributed independent top-hat sub-beams is theoretically studied. Through the numerical solution of time-averaged nonlinear Schrodinger equation, we study the spatio-angular dynamics of synthesized near-infrared "corona-beam" (CB) along the optical path by varying the number and power of the beamlets (corona-spikes). For the first time to our knowledge, the evident advances in the multiple filamentation region man…
We investigate the self-phase modulation of intense femtosecond laser pulses propagating in an ionizing gas and its effects on collective properties of high-order harmonics generated in the medium. Plasmas produced in the medium are shown to induce a positive frequency chirp on the leading edge of the propagating laser pulse, which subsequently drives high harmonics to become positively chirped. In certain parameter regimes, the plasma-induced positive chirp can help to generate sharply peaked high harmonics, by compensating for the dynamically-induced negative chirp that is caused by the stee…
According to a recent experiment, the instantaneous electronic Kerr effect in air exhibits a strong intensity dependence, the nonlinear refractive index switching sign and crossing over from a self-focusing to a de-focusing nonlinearity. A subsequent theoretical work has demonstrated that this has paradigm-changing consequences for the understanding of filamentation in air, so it is important to subject the idea of higher-order nonlinearities to stringent tests. Here we use numerical modeling to propose an experiment capable of discriminating between the standard and the new intensity-dependen…
The introduction of mid-IR optical parametric chirped pulse amplifiers (OPCPAs) has catalyzed interest in multi-millijoule, infrared femtosecond pulse-based filamentation. As tunneling ionization is a fundamental first stage in these high-intensity laser-matter interactions, characterizing the process is critical to understand derivative topical studies on femtosecond filamentation and self-focusing. Here, we report constructive-elastic microwave scattering-based measurements of total electron count, electron number densities, and photoionization rates generated by 3.9 micron femtosecond mid-i…
Using femtosecond laser pulses at 800 and 400 nm, we characterize the formation of underdense channels in air generated by laser filamentation at the millijoule energy level by means of transverse interferometry. We find that using tight focusing conditions, filamentation generates a shock wave and that the resulting low-density channel lasts for more than 90 ms. Comparison of these results with hydrodynamic simulations using an Eulerian hydrodynamic code gives an good agreement and allows us to estimate the initial gas peak temperature at $\sim$ 1000 K. The influence of experimental parameter…
We demonstrate that femtosecond filaments can set up an extended and robust thermal waveguide structure in air with a lifetime of several milliseconds, making possible the very long range guiding and distant projection of high energy laser pulses and high average power beams. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate guiding of 110 mJ, 7 ns, 532 nm pulses with 90% throughput over ~15 Rayleigh lengths in a 70 cm long air waveguide generated by the long timescale thermal relaxation of an array of femtosecond filaments. The guided pulse was limited only by our available laser energy. In general, th…
Multi-pass cell (MPC) based temporal pulse compressors have emerged in the last years as a powerful and versatile solution to the intrinsic issue of long pulses from Yb-based high-power ultrafast lasers. However, the spectral broadening of high-energy (typically more than 100 uJ) pulses has only been realized in complex setups, i.e., in large and costly, pressure-controlled vacuum chambers to avoid strong focusing, ionization, and damage on the mirrors. Here, we present spectral broadening of 2 mJ pulses in a simple and compact (60 cm long) multi-pass cell operated in ambient air. Instead of t…
We investigate beam pointing dynamics in filamentation in gases driven by high repetition rate femtosecond laser pulses. Upon suddenly exposing a gas to a kilohertz train of filamenting pulses, the filament is steered from its original direction to a new stable direction whose equilibrium is determined by a balance among buoyant, viscous, and diffusive processes in the gas. Results are shown for Xe and air, but are broadly applicable to all configurations employing high repetition rate femtosecond laser propagation in gases.
Ultrashort electron beams with femtosecond to picosecond bunch durations offer unique opportunities to explore active research areas ranging from ultrafast structural dynamics to ultra-high dose-rate radiobiological studies. We present a straightforward method to generate MeV-ranged electron beams in ambient air through the tight focusing of a few-cycle, mJ-class femtosecond IR laser. At one meter from the source, the highest measured dose rate of 0.15 Gy/s exceeds the yearly dose limit in less than one second and warrants the implementation of radiation protection. Two-dimensional Particle-In…
Femtosecond laser micromachining provides high precision and less thermal diffusion in surface structuring as a result of the ultrashort temporal duration and ultrahigh peak intensity of the femtosecond laser pulses. To increase the throughput of surface patterning, the focal spot size can be expanded with loose focusing, which, however, could lead to nonlinear self-focusing of the pulses when the pulses propagate in air. We solve the problem by use of spatiotemporally focused femtosecond laser pulses for ablation of metal surfaces, which gives rise to improved surface quality as compared with…
We observe that focusing a femtosecond laser beam simultaneously chirped in time and space domains in glass can efficiently suppress the optical aberration caused by the refractive index mismatch at the interface of air and the glass sample. We then demonstrate three dimensional microprocessing in glass with a nearly invariant spatial resolution for a large range of penetration depth between 0.25 mm and 9 mm without any aberration correction.
We investigate the generation of broadband terahertz (THz) pulses with phase singularity from air plasmas created by fundamental and second harmonic laser pulses. We show that when the second harmonic beam carries a vortex charge, the THz beam acquires a vortex structure as well. A generic feature of such THz vortex is that the intensity is modulated along the azimuthal angle, which can be attributed to the spatially varying relative phase difference between the two pump harmonics. Fully space and time resolved numerical simulations reveal that transverse instabilities of the pump further affe…
We report on an experimental measurement of the pulse front tilt (PFT) of spatiotemporally focused femtosecond laser pulses in the focal plane in both air and bulk transparent materials, which is achieved by examination of the interference pattern between the spatiotemporally focused pulse and a conventional focused reference pulse as a function of time delay between the two pulses. Our simulation results agree well with the experimental observations.
We measure the detailed spatiotemporal profiles of femtosecond laser pulses in the infrared wavelength range λ=2.5-11μm, and the absolute nonlinear response of major air constituents (N2, O2, and Ar) over this range. The spatiotemporal measurements reveal wavelength-dependent pulse front tilt and temporal stretching in the infrared pulses.
A dramatic spectral modulation of third-order harmonic (TH) emission generated in a near in- frared femtosecond (fs) pulse filamentation, assisted by a two-dimensional plasma grating formed by two pump femtosecond pulses, is experimentally demonstrated when their spatiotemporal overlap is achieved. It is mainly attributed to strong cross-phase modulation induced by the fundamental wave of the probe pulse and two pump ones. The delay dynamic of TH spectra indicates the influence of two retarded nonlinear responses on the TH generation. The dependences of TH generation on the energies of probe a…
We report on the diffraction-free propagation of space-time wave packets (STWPs) -- a class of propagation-invariant pulsed beams -- for $\sim\!1$ km in an open-air laser range in a low-turbulence scenario. Making use of $\approx\!100$-fs pulses (bandwidth $\sim\!25$ nm) at a wavelength of $\approx\!1$ $μ$m, we construct an STWP with a transverse width of $\approx\!2$ mm that expands to $\approx\!3$ mm after $\sim\!500$ m, and another that expands from $\approx\!8$ mm to $\approx\!10$ mm after 1 km. The propagation of the STWPs is compared to Gaussian wave packets of the same transverse spatia…
Propagation of a tightly focused high-power ultrashort laser pulse in an optical medium is usually substantially influenced by the medium optical nonlinearity that can noticeably affect the laser pulse parameters around the nonlinear focus and lead to unavoidable and often undesirable spatial distortions of the focal waist. We present the results of our experimental study and numerical simulations on a femtosecond Ti-Sapphire laser pulse propagation in air under different spatial focusing. We concentrated our study on spectral-angular and spatial pulse transformations under different focusing …
Propagation of ultrashort optical pulses in a dense resonant medium is considered in the semiclassical limit. In our analysis, we place emphasis on several main points. First, we study transformations of spectra in the process of pulse propagation and interactions with another pulse. The second point involves the transient processes (including pulse compression) connected with self-induced transparency soliton formation inside the medium. Finally, the third aspect is the study of collisions of co- and counter-propagating pulses in the medium. In the last case, the investigation of symmetric an…
We have developed a single-shot imaging technique that can capture ultrafast events occurring on femtosecond to picosecond time scales. The technique is based on an optical pump-probe method, in which multiple time-delayed femtosecond pulses simultaneously probe a pump-excited sample. Here we use two sets of 2-by-2 mirror arrays for spatial/temporal division and routing of multiple probe pulses. This single-shot scheme is successfully applied to capture femtosecond ionization fronts propagating at the speed of light in air, as well as laser-induced ablation of solid targets.
The solution of the wave equation in the envelope approximation with temporal corrections for a laser pulse propagating in a medium where the Kerr effect, field ionization, and associated absorption take place, is obtained through a first-order perturbative approach. The closed-form expressions so obtained clarify the influence of the various terms of the equation on the laser amplitude and on the frequency generation as a function of the retarded time. Furthermore, they allow extracting scaling parameters which size the nonlinear effects. The results are illustrated quantitatively on the case…
The axial dependence of femtosecond filamentation in air is measured under conditions of varying laser pulsewidth, energy, and focusing f-number. Filaments are characterized by the ultrafast z-dependent absorption of energy from the laser pulse and diagnosed by measuring the local single cycle acoustic wave generated. Results are compared to 2D+1 simulations of pulse propagation, whose results are highly sensitive to the instantaneous (electronic) part of the nonlinear response of $N_2$ and $O_2$. We find that recent measurements of the nonlinear refractive index ($n_2$) in [J.K. Wahlstrand et…
The four-wave mixing produced with two ultrashort phase-locked w-3w laser pulses propagating coherently in a two-level system in the infrared spectral region is shown to depend on the pulses relative phase. The Maxwell-Bloch equations are solved beyond the rotating-wave approximation to account for field frequencies which are largely detuned from the atomic resonance. The relative phase dominating the efficiency of the coupling to the 5w anti-Stokes Raman component is determined by sign of the total ac Stark shift induced in the system, in such a way that the phase influence disappears precise…
We report on the observation of backward lasing at 391.4 nm of nitrogen ions pumped by linearly polarized intense femtosecond pulses at 800 nm. The strongly enhanced spectral intensity at 391.4 nm, as well as the amplification of an externally injected backward seeding pulse, confirm that the backward 391.4 nm signal is due to optical amplification in the gas plasma. Compared to the forward emission at 391.4 nm, the optimal backward emission is achieved at a lower gas pressure around 10 mbar, which is due to asymmetry of the backward and forward directions rooted in the traveling excitation ge…
We report, for what we believe to be the first time, on the generation of remote self-seeding laser amplification by using only one 800 nm Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser pulse. The laser pulse (~ 40 fs) is first used to generate a filament either in pure nitrogen or in ambient air in which population inversion between ground and excited states of nitrogen molecular ions is realized. Self-induced white light inside the filament is then serving as the seed to be amplified. The self-induced narrow-band laser at 428 nm has a pulse duration of ~2.6 ps with perfect linear polarization property. This …
Recent experiments on femtosecond pulses in water displayed long distance propagation analogous to that reported in air. We verify this phenomena numerically and show that the propagation is dynamic as opposed to self-guided. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the propagation can be interpreted as due to dynamic nonlinear X-waves whose robustness and role in long distance propagation is shown to follow from the interplay between nonlinearity and chromatic dispersion.
Singly ionized nitrogen molecules in ambient air pumped by near-infrared femtosecond laser give rise to superradiant emission. Here we demonstrate coherent control of this superradiance by injecting a pair of resonant seeding pulses inside the nitrogen gas plasma. Strong modulation of the 391.4 nm superradiance with a period of 1.3 fs is observed when the delay between the two seeding pulses are finely tuned, pinpointing the essential role of macroscopic coherence in this lasing process. Based on this time-resolved method, the complex temporal evolution of the macroscopic coherence between two…
We describe novel optical switching schemes operating at femtosecond time scales by employing free carrier (FC) excitation. Such unprecedented switching times are made possible by spatially patterning the density of the excited FCs. In the first realization, we rely on diffusion, i.e., on the nonlocality of the FC nonlinear response of the semiconductor, to erase the initial FC pattern and, thereby, eliminate the reflectivity of the system. In the second realization, we erase the FC pattern by launching a second pump pulse at a controlled delay. We discuss the advantages and limitations of the…
Discriminating between ballistic and diffuse components of light propagating through highly scattering media is not only important for imaging purposes but also for investigating the fundamental diffusion properties of the medium itself. Massively developed to this end over the past 20 years, nonlinear temporal gating remains limited to about 10e-10 transmission factors. Here, we report nonlinear time gated measurements of highly scattered femtosecond pulses with transmission factors as low as 10e-12. Our approach is based on third-order nonlinear cross-correlation of femtosecond pulses, a sta…
Stable propagation of large, multifilament arrays over long distances in air paves new ways for microwave-radiation manipulation. Although, the dynamics of a single or a few filaments was discussed in some of the previous studies, we show that the stability of large plasma filament arrays is significantly more complicated and is constrained by several trade-offs. Here, we analyze the stability properties of rectangular arrays as a function of four parameters: relative phase of the generating beams, number of filaments, separation between them, and initial power. We find that arrays with altern…
We present a method of rendering aerial and volumetric graphics using femtosecond lasers. A high-intensity laser excites a physical matter to emit light at an arbitrary 3D position. Popular applications can then be explored especially since plasma induced by a femtosecond laser is safer than that generated by a nanosecond laser. There are two methods of rendering graphics with a femtosecond laser in air: Producing holograms using spatial light modulation technology, and scanning of a laser beam by a galvano mirror. The holograms and workspace of the system proposed here occupy a volume of up t…
Molecular rotational spectroscopy based on strong-field-ionization-induced nitrogen laser is employed to investigate the time evolution of the rotational wave packet composed by a coherent superposition of quantum rotational states created in a field-free molecular alignment. We show that this technique uniquely allows real-time observation of the ultrafast dynamics of the individual rotational states in the rotational wavepacket. Our analysis also shows that there exist two channels of generation of the nitrogen laser, shedding new light on the population inversion mechanism behind the air la…
