Frequency shifts of the ^199Hg^+ 5d^10 6s ^2S_1/2 (F=0, M_F=0) to 5d^9 6s^2 ^2D_5/2 (F=2, M_F=0) electric-quadrupole transition at 282 nm due to external fields are calculated, based on a combination of measured atomic parameters and ab initio calculations. This transition is under investigation as an optical frequency standard. The perturbations calculated are the quadratic Zeeman shift, the scalar and tensor quadratic Stark shifts, and the interaction between an external electric field gradient and the atomic quadrupole moment. The quadrupole shift is likely to be the most difficult to evaluate in a frequency standard and may have a magnitude of about 1 Hz for a single ion in a Paul trap.
Collisions with background gas particles can shift the resonance frequencies of atoms in atomic clocks. The internal quantum states of atoms can also become entangled with their motional states due to the recoil imparted by a collision, which leads to a further shift of the clock frequency through the relativistic Doppler shift. It can be complicated to evaluate the Doppler and collisional frequency shifts for clock atoms in such entangled states, but estimates of these shifts are essential in order to improve the accuracy of optical atomic clocks. We present a formalism that describes collisi…
Collisions with background gas can perturb the transition frequency of trapped ions in an optical atomic clock. We develop a non-perturbative framework based on a quantum channel description of the scattering process, and use it to derive a master equation which leads to a simple analytic expression for the collisional frequency shift. As a demonstration of our method, we calculate the frequency shift of the Sr$^+$ optical atomic clock transition due to elastic collisions with helium.
We report the first experimental observation of frequency shift in high order harmonic generation (HHG) from isotopic molecules H2 and D2 . It is found that harmonics generated from the isotopic molecules exhibit obvious spectral red shift with respect to those from Ar atom. The red shift is further demonstrated to arise from the laser-driven nuclear motion in isotopic molecules. By utilizing the red shift observed in experiment, we successfully retrieve the nuclear vibrations in H2 and D2, which agree well with the theoretical calculations from the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) w…

We study nuclear spin frequency shifts in a $^{3}$He-$^{129}$Xe comagnetometer caused by spin polarization of $^{3}$He. We use stemless cylindrical cells to systematically vary the cell geometry and separately measure the cell shape-dependent and shape-independent frequency shifts. We find that a certain aspect ratio for a cylindrical cell cancels the dipolar effects of $^3$He magnetization in the regime of fast spin diffusion. Using this control we observe a scalar $^{3}$He-$^{129}$Xe collisional frequency shift characterized by an enhancement factor $κ_{\text{HeXe}} = -0.011\pm0.001$ in exce…
An optical reference based on a two-photon optical transition with ac Stark shift cancellation is proposed. The reference uses two interrogating laser fields at different frequencies. Compared to conventional optical two-photon references, the new approach offers the possibility for improved short-term stability resulting from a higher signal-to-noise and improved long-term stability due to active ac Stark shift cancellation. We demonstrate the ac Stark shift cancellation method on the $5s\,{^2S}_{1/2} \rightarrow 5d\,{^2D}_{5/2}$ two-photon transition in $^{87}$Rb.
Polarized nuclei are a powerful tool in nuclear spin studies and in searches for beyond-the-standard model physics. Noble-gas comagnetometer systems, which compare two nuclear species, have thus far been limited by anomalous frequency variations of unknown origin. We studied the self-interactions in a $^3$He-$^{129}$Xe system by independently addressing, controlling and measuring the influence of each component of the nuclear spin polarization. Our results directly rule out prior explanations of the shifts, and demonstrate experimentally that they can be explained by species dependent self-int…
We present a new interrogation scheme for the next generation of quantum clocks to suppress frequency-shifts induced by laser probing fields themselves based on Generalized Hyper-Ramsey resonances. Sequences of composite laser pulses with specific selection of phases, frequency detunings and durations are combined to generate a very efficient and robust frequency locking signal with almost a perfect elimination of the light-shift from off resonant states and to decouple the unperturbed frequency measurement from the laser's intensity. The frequency lock point generated from synthesized error s…
We describe a $^{3}$He-$^{129}$Xe comagnetometer operating in stemless anodically bonded cells with a 6 mm$^3$ volume and a $^{129}$Xe spin coherence time of 300 sec. We use a $^{87}$Rb pulse-train magnetometer with co-linear pump and probe beams to study the nuclear spin frequency shifts caused by spin polarization of $^{3}$He. By systematically varying the cell geometry in a batch cell fabrication process we can separately measure the cell shape dependent and independent frequency shifts. We find that a certain aspect ratio of the cylindrical cell can cancel the effects of $^3$He magnetizati…
We examine the effect of a parasitic rf magnetic field, attributed to ion trapping, on the highly anticipated nuclear clock based on $^{229}$Th$^{3+}$ [C. J. Campbell et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 120802 (2012)]. The rf magnetic field induces an ac Zeeman shift to the clock frequency. As we demonstrate, this shift threatens to be the dominant systematic frequency shift for the clock, exceeding other systematic frequency shifts and the projected systematic uncertainty of the clock by orders of magnitude. We propose practical means to suppress or eliminate this shift.
Collisions between background gas particles and the trapped ion in an atomic clock can subtly shift the frequency of the clock transition. The uncertainty in the correction for this effect makes a significant contribution to the total systematic uncertainty budget of trapped-ion clocks. Using a non-perturbative analytic framework that was developed for this problem, we estimate the frequency shift in Al$^+$ ion clocks due to collisions with helium and hydrogen. Our calculations significantly improve the uncertainties in the collisional shift coefficients, and show that the collisional frequenc…
With the uncertainty of the optical clocks improving to the order of 10-18, the probe light used to detect the clock transition has demonstrated nonnegligible Stark shift, provoking to precisely evaluate this shift. Here, we demonstrate a frequency modulation technique to realize a large measurement lever arm of the probe Stark shift with no cost of the measurement accuracy of the interleaved stabilization method. This frequency-modulated spectrum is theoretical described and experimental verified. The probe Stark shift coefficient of the 87Sr optical lattice clock is experimentally determined…
In order to improve the short-term stability of trapped-ion optical clocks, we are developing a frequency standard based on ${}^{115}$In${}^+$ / ${}^{172}$Yb${}^+$ Coulomb crystals. For this purpose, we have developed scalable segmented Paul traps which allow a high level of control for multiple ion ensembles. In this article, we detail on our recent results regarding the reduction of the leading sources of frequency uncertainty introduced by the ion trap: 2nd-order Doppler shifts due to micromotion and the heating of secular motion, as well as the black-body radiation shift due to warming of …
Dipole-dipole interactions lead to frequency shifts that are expected to limit the performance of next-generation atomic clocks. In this work, we compute dipolar frequency shifts accounting for the intrinsic atomic multilevel structure in standard Ramsey spectroscopy. When interrogating the transitions featuring the smallest Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, we find that a simplified two-level treatment becomes inappropriate, even in the presence of large Zeeman shifts. For these cases, we show a net suppression of dipolar frequency shifts and the emergence of dominant non-classical effects for exp…
We report on the development of a diode laser system - the `Faraday laser' - using an atomic Faraday filter as the frequency-selective element. In contrast to typical external-cavity diode laser systems which offer tunable output frequency but require additional control systems in order to achieve a stable output frequency, our system only lases at a single frequency, set by the peak transmission frequency of the internal atomic Farady filter. Our system has both short-term and long-term stability of less than 1~MHz, which is less than the natural linewidth of alkali-atomic D-lines, making sim…
