We have performed ab initio calculations of the frequency shift induced by a static electric field on the cesium clock hyperfine transition. The calculations are used to find the frequency shifts due to blackbody radiation. Our result ($δν/E^2=-2.26(2)\times 10^{-10}$Hz/(V/m)$^2$) is in good agreement with early measurements and ab initio calculations performed in other groups. We present arguments against recent claims that the actual value of the effect might be smaller. The difference ($\sim$ 10%) between ab initio and semiempirical calculations is due to the contribution of the continuum spectrum to the sum over intermediate states.
A cesium atomic fountain clock is under development at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in China. In this paper, we describe the construction of the entire fountain clock system and report the preliminary results. A frequency stability of $2.5\times 10^{-13} τ^{-1/2}$ has been achieved by inter-comparison with a hydrogen maser, and the factors limiting the frequency stability are also discussed.
Black-body radiation (BBR) shifts of $^3\!P_0-^1\!S_0$ clock transition in divalent atoms Cd and Zn are evaluated using accurate relativistic many-body techniques of atomic structure. Static polarizabilities of the clock levels and relevant electric-dipole matrix elements are computed. We also present a comparative overview of the BBR shifts in optical clocks based on neutral divalent atoms trapped in optical lattices.
Objects at finite temperature emit thermal radiation with an outward energy-momentum flow, which exerts an outward radiation pressure. At room temperature, a cesium atom scatters on average less than one of these blackbody radiation photons every 10^8 years. Thus, it is generally assumed that any scattering force exerted on atoms by such radiation is negligible. However, atoms also interact coherently with the thermal electromagnetic field. In this work, we measure an attractive force induced by blackbody radiation between a cesium atom and a heated, centimeter-sized cylinder which is orders o…
We propose and analyze a Cesium lattice optical clock (CLOC) which has the potential for high performance and simple operation in a compact form factor using a forbidden optical transition in Cs atoms at 685 nm. Cs atoms are trapped in a 3D optical lattice using a magic trap wavelength of $λ_{\textrm m}=803~\textrm nm$. To reduce sensitivity to magnetic fields the atoms are probed on two cycling transitions with equal magnitude, but opposite magnetic shifts. Operation of the clock requires only three diode lasers at 685, 803, 852 nm and is simplified compared to other higher-performance optica…
As optical clocks are improved to reach the frequency uncertainty below the 10$^{-17}$ level, the frequency shift due to the blackbody radiation (BBR) has been one of the major systematic effects hindering further improvement. To evaluate the BBR shift of an Yb optical lattice clock at KRISS, we installed an in-vacuum BBR shield and made radiation thermometry using a black-coated-sphere thermal probe. After we quantitatively measured the conduction loss of the thermal probe and the effects of all the external radiation sources, we determined the temperature at the atom trap site with an uncert…
I searched for the ground state 6.8 and 9.2 GHz hyperfine transitions of rubidium and cesium toward M- and L-dwarfs that show Rb and Cs optical resonance lines. The optical lines can pump the hyperfine transitions, potentially forming masers. These spin-flip transitions of Rb and Cs are the principal transitions used in atomic clocks (the $^{133}$Cs hyperfine transition defines the second). If they are detected in stellar atmospheres, these transitions would provide exceptionally precise clocks that can be used as accelerometers, as exoplanet detectors, as probes of the predictions of general …

In this paper, blackbody radiation (BBR) temperature rise seen by the $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion confined in a miniature Paul trap and its uncertainty have been evaluated via finite-element method (FEM) modelling. The FEM model was validated by comparing with thermal camera measurements, which were calibrated by PT1000 resistance thermometer, at several points on a dummy trap. The input modelling parameters were analyzed carefully in detail, and their contributions to the uncertainty of environment temperature were evaluated on the validated FEM model. The result shows that the temperature rise seen by…
We measure the dynamic differential scalar polarizabilities at 10.6 $μ$m for two candidate clock transitions in $^{176}\mathrm{Lu}^+$. The fractional black body radiation (BBR) shifts at 300 K for the $^1S_0 \leftrightarrow {^3D_1}$ and $^1S_0 \leftrightarrow {^3D_2}$ transitions are evaluated to be $-1.36\,(9) \times 10^{-18}$ and $2.70 \,(21) \times10^{-17}$, respectively. The former is the lowest of any established optical atomic clock.

High accuracy correction of blackbody radiation shift in an optical lattice clock
The Stark shift due to blackbody radiation (BBR) is the key factor limiting the performance of many atomic frequency standards, with the BBR environment inside the clock apparatus being difficult to characterize at a high level of precision. Here we demonstrate an in-vacuum radiation shield that furnishes a uniform, well-characterized BBR environment for the atoms in an ytterbium optical lattice clock. Operated at room temperature, this shield enables specification of the BBR environment to a corresponding fractional clock uncertainty contribution of $5.5 \times 10^{-19}$. Combined with uncert…
We have developed an optical lattice clock that can operate in dual modes: a strontium (Sr) clock mode and an ytterbium (Yb) clock mode. Dual-mode operation of the Sr-Yb optical lattice clock is achieved by alternately cooling and trapping $^{87}$Sr and $^{171}$Yb atoms inside the vacuum chamber of the clock. Optical lattices for Sr and Yb atoms were arranged with horizontal and vertical configurations, respectively, resulting in a small distance of the order of 100 $μ$m between the trapped Sr and Yb atoms. The $^{1}$S$_{0}$-$^{3}$P$_{0}$ clock transitions in the trapped atoms were interrogate…
This article describes the recent progress of optical lattice clocks with neutral strontium ($^{87}$Sr), ytterbium ($^{171}$Yb) and mercury ($^{199}$Hg) atoms. In particular, we present frequency comparison between the clocks locally via an optical frequency comb and between two Sr clocks at remote sites using a phase-stabilized fibre link. We first review cryogenic Sr optical lattice clocks that reduce the room-temperature blackbody radiation shift by two orders of magnitude and serve as a reference in the following clock comparisons. Similar physical properties of Sr and Yb atoms, such as tr…
We propose a high-performance atomic clock based on the 1.81 PHz transition between the ground and first-excited state of doubly ionized lead. Utilizing an even isotope of lead, both clock states have $I=J=F=0$, where $I$, $J$, and $F$ are the conventional quantum numbers specifying nuclear, electronic, and total angular momentum, respectively. The clock states are nondegenerate and completely immune to nonscalar perturbations, including first order Zeeman and electric quadrupole shifts. Additionally, the proposed clock is relatively insusceptible to other frequency shifts (blackbody radiation…
A physics package for a compact cold atomic clock is hereby presented. The uniqueness of this package is its small dimensions that enable, for the first time, implementation of a primary cold atomic clock in a standard package of 3U height (=133mm). These dimensions are made possible by using an in-vacuum Microwave (MW) Loop Gap Resonator (LGR) whose length and diameter can be reduced from those of a typical resonator. Following our presentation of the design, we analyze the homogeneity of the MW field amplitude and phase. We find that the expected clock instability due to non-uniformity of th…
We report on the isotope shift between ${}^{88}$Sr and ${}^{87}$Sr on the ${}^1S_0 - {}^3P_0$ clock transitions. The interleaved operation of an optical lattice clock with two isotopes allows the canceling out of common perturbations, such as the quadratic Zeeman shift, the clock-light shift, and the blackbody radiation shift. The isotope shift is determined to be 62 188 134.004(10) Hz, where the major uncertainty is introduced by the collisional shift that is distinct for each isotope. Our result allows us to determine the frequency of $^{88}$Sr-$^{87}$Sr optical lattice clocks with a fractio…
Recent experimental progress in cooling, trapping, and quantum logic spectroscopy of highly-charged ions (HCIs) made HCIs accessible for high resolution spectroscopy and precision fundamental studies. Based on these achievements, we explore a possibility to develop optical clocks using transitions between the ground and a low-lying excited state in the Cf$^{15+}$ and Cf$^{17+}$ ions. Using a high-accuracy relativistic method of calculation we predicted the wavelengths of clock transitions, calculated relevant atomic properties, and analyzed a number of systematic effects (such as the electric …
We experimentally and theoretically determine the magic wavelength of the (5$s^2$)$^{1}S_{0}$$-$(5$s$5$p$)$^{3}P_{0}$ clock transition of $^{111}$Cd to be 419.88(14) nm and 420.1(7) nm. To perform Lamb-Dicke spectroscopy of the clock transition, we use narrow-line laser cooling on the $^{1}S_{0}$$-$$^{3}P_{1}$ transition to cool the atoms to 6 $μ$K and load them into an optical lattice. Cadmium is an attractive candidate for optical lattice clocks because it has a small sensitivity to blackbody radiation and its efficient narrow-line cooling mitigates higher order light shifts. We calculate th…
Singly-ionized ytterbium, with ultra-narrow optical clock transitions at 467 nm and 436 nm, is a convenient system for the realization of optical atomic clocks and tests of present-day variation of fundamental constants. We present the first direct measurement of the frequency ratio of these two clock transitions, without reference to a cesium primary standard, and using the same single ion of 171Yb+. The absolute frequencies of both transitions are also presented, each with a relative standard uncertainty of $6\times 10^{-16}$. Combining our results with those from other experiments, we repor…
We study the $^1$S$_0 - ^3$D$_2$ and $^1$S$_0 - ^3$D$_3$ transitions in Cu II and the $^1$S$_0 - ^3$P$^{\rm o}_2$ transition in Yb III as possible candidates for the optical clock transitions. A recently developed version of the configuration (CI) method, designed for a large number of electrons above closed-shell core, is used to carry out the calculation. We calculate excitation energies, transition rates, lifetimes, scalar static polarizabilities of the ground and clock states, and blackbody radiation shift. We demonstrate that the considered transitions have all features of the clock trans…
We describe an optical atomic clock based on quantum-logic spectroscopy of the $^1$S$_0$ $\leftrightarrow$ $^3$P$_0$ transition in $^{27}$Al$^{+}$ with a systematic uncertainty of ${9.4 \times 10^{-19}}$ and a frequency stability of ${1.2\times10^{-15}/\sqrtτ}$. A $^{25}$Mg$^{+}$ ion is simultaneously trapped with the $^{27}$Al$^{+}$ ion and used for sympathetic cooling and state readout. Improvements in a new trap have led to reduced secular motion heating, compared to previous $^{27}$Al$^{+}$ clocks, enabling clock operation with ion secular motion near the three-dimensional ground state. Op…
Progress in atomic optical clocks with total uncertainty of $10^{-18}$ or below requires a precise estimation of multipolar and higher-order effects due to atom-field interactions. Magnesium is an attractive candidate for optical lattice clocks because it is insensitive to blackbody radiation and has a large quality factor. We employ a combined method of the Dirac-Fock plus core polarization and the relativistic configuration interaction to calculate the dynamic multipolar polarizabilities and the hyperpolarizabilities of the atomic Mg clock. The lattice light shift against variation of the la…
Precision measurements of quantum systems often seek to probe or must account for the interaction with blackbody radiation. Over the past several decades, much attention has been given to AC Stark shifts and stimulated state transfer. For a blackbody in thermodynamic equilibrium, these two effects are determined by the expectation value of photon number in each mode of the Planck spectrum. Here, we explore how the photon number variance of an equilibrium blackbody generally leads to a parametric broadening of the energy levels of quantum systems that is inversely proportional to the square-roo…
