We introduce a precise notion, in terms of few Schlessinger's type conditions, of extended deformation functors which is compatible with most of recent ideas in the Derived Deformation Theory (DDT) program and with geometric examples. With this notion we develop the (extended) analogue of Schlessinger and obstruction theories. The inverse mapping theorem holds for natural transformations of extended deformation functors and all such functors with finite dimensional tangent space are prorepresentable in the homotopy category.
Using determinant functor, we describe a natural transformation from local Hilbert functor to K-theoretic cycle groups of codimension one, which were variants of Balmer's tensor triangular Chow groups. This enables us to answers a question of Bloch on infinitesimal deformation of Chow groups of divisors.
We study the behaviour of infinitesimal deformation functors of local group actions with regard to passing to subgroups and quotient groups. Inspired by the cohomological information, we conjecture the existence of a decomposition of a deformation functor of a local $G$-action as a smooth extension of a fibered product of functors related to a subgroup and a quotient group of $G$.
Berikashvili's functor D defined in terms of twisting cochains is related to deformation theory, gauge theory, Chen's formal power series connections, and the master equation in physics. The idea is advertised that some unification and understanding of the links between these topics is provided by the notion of twisting cochain and the idea of classifying twisting cochains.
We provide a method to compute the dimension of the tangent space to the global infinitesimal deformation functor of a curve together with a subgroup of the group of automorphisms. The computational techniques we developed are applied to several examples including Fermat curves, $p$-cyclic covers of the affine line and to Lehr-Matignon curves.
This is a comment on the Kuranishi method of constructing analytic deformation spaces. It is based on a simple observation that the Kuranishi map can always be inverted in the category of $L_{\infty}$-algebras. The $L_{\infty}$-structure obtained by this inversion is used to define an ''unobstructed'' deformation functor which is always representable by a smooth pointed moduli space. The singular nature of the original Kuranishi deformation space emerges in this setting merely as a result of the truncation of this ``naive'' $L_{\infty}$-algebra controlling the deformations to a usual different…
This is the second paper in a series. In part I we developed deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Here we extend these (derived) deformation functors to an appropriate bicategory of artinian DG algebras and prove that these extended functors are pro-representable in a strong sense.
We apply the known results on the Galois module structure of the sheaf of polydifferentials in order to study the dimension of the tangent space of the deformation functor of curves with automorphisms. We are able to find the dimension for the case of weakly ramified covers and for the case of the action of a cyclic group of order $p^v$.
We compare deformations of algebras to deformations of schemes in the setting of invariant theory. Our results generalize comparison theorems of Schlessinger and the second author for projective schemes. We consider deformations (abstract and embedded) of a scheme $X$ which is a good quotient of a quasi-affine scheme $X^\prime$ by a linearly reductive group $G$ and compare them to invariant deformations of an affine $G$-scheme containing $X^\prime$ as an open invariant subset. The main theorems give conditions for when the comparison morphisms are smooth or isomorphisms.
We give an alternative approach to the computation of the dimension of the tangent space of the deformation space of curves with automorphisms. A homological version of the local-global principle similar to the one of J.Bertin, A. Mézard is proved, and a computation in the case of ordinary curves is obtained, by application of the results of S. Nakajima for the Galois module structure of the space of 2-holomorphic differentials on them.
Let X be a scheme that does not satisfy the valuative criterion of separatedness. We show that the Hilbert functor parametrizing closed families of X that are flat, finite and of rank one is not represented by a scheme or an algebraic space.
Given a split $\mathbb{P}$-functor $F:\mathcal{D}^b(X) \to \mathcal{D}^b(Y)$ between smooth projective varieties, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of the Hochschild cohomology of $X$, for it to become spherical on the total space of a deformation of $Y$, and explain how the spherical twist becomes the $\mathbb{P}$-twist on the special fibre. These results generalise the object case, that is when $X$ is a point, which was studied previously by Huybrechts and Thomas, and we show how they apply to the $\mathbb{P}$-functor associated to the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 …
Suppose we are given complex manifolds $X$ and $Y$ together with substacks $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{S}'$ of modules over algebras of formal deformation $\mathcal{A}$ on $X$ and $\mathcal{A}'$ on $Y$, respectively. Suppose also we are given a functor $Φ$ from the category of open subsets of $X$ to the category of open subsets of $Y$ together with a functor $F$ of prestacks from $\mathcal{S}$ to $\mathcal{S}'\circΦ$. Then we give conditions for the existence of a canonical functor, extension of $F$ to the category of coherent ${\sha}$-modules such that the cohomology associated to the action …
We give the definitions of affine algebraic supervariety and affine algebraic group through the functor of points and we relate them to the other definitions present in the literature. We study in detail the algebraic supergroup $SL(m|n)$ and give explicitly the Hopf algebra structure of the algebra representing its functor of points. At the end we give also the quantization of $SL(m|n)$ together with its coactions on suitable quantum spaces according to Manin's philosophy.
For a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack over $\CC$, we define its associated Kodaira-Spencer differential graded Lie algebra and show that the deformation functor of the stack is isomorphic to the deformation functor of the Kodaira-Spencer algebra if the stack is proper over $\CC$.
We compute the dimension of the tangent space to, and the Krull dimension of the pro-representable hull of two deformation functors. The first one is the ``algebraic'' deformation functor of an ordinary curve X over a field of positive charateristic with prescribed action of a finite group G, and the data are computed in terms of the ramification behaviour of X -> G\X. The second one is the ``analytic'' deformation functor of a fixed embedding of a finitely generated discrete group N in PGL(2,K) over a non-archimedean valued field K, and the data are computed in terms of the Bass-Serre represe…
We reduce the study of the Krull dimension d of the deformation ring of the functor of deformations of curves with automorphisms to the study of the tangent space of the deformation functor of a class of matrix representations of the p-part of the decomposition groups at wild ramified points, and we give a method in order to compute d.
We describe a noncommutative deformation theory for presheaves and sheaves of modules that generalizes the commutative deformation theory of these global algebraic structures, and the noncommutative deformation theory of modules over algebras due to Laudal. In the first part of the paper, we describe a noncommutative deformation functor for presheaves of modules on a small category, and an obstruction theory for this functor in terms of global Hochschild cohomology. An important feature of this obstruction theory is that it can be computed in concrete terms in many interesting cases. In the la…
We use the Thom-Whitney construction to show that infinitesimal deformations of a coherent sheaf F are controlled by the differential graded Lie algebra of global sections of an acyclic resolution of the sheaf End(E), where E is any locally free resolution of F. In particular, one recovers the well known fact that the tangent space to deformations of F is Ext^1(F,F), and obstructions are contained in Ext^2(F,F). The main tool is the identification of the deformation functor associated with the Thom-Whitney DGLA of a semicosimplicial DGLA whose cohomology is concentrated in nonnegative degrees …
Let X/S be a semistable curve with an action of a finite group G and let H be a normal subgroup of G. We present a new condition under which for any base change T->S, (X/G)*T is isomorphic to (X*T)/G. This allows us to define induction and restriction morphisms between the G-equivariant deformation functor of X and the G/H-equivariant (resp. H-equivariant) deformation functor of X/H (resp. X).
This is the first paper in a series. We develop a general deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Namely, for a DG module $E$ over a DG category we define four deformation functors $\Def ^{\h}(E)$, $\coDef ^{\h}(E)$, $\Def (E)$, $\coDef (E)$. The first two functors describe the deformations (and co-deformations) of $E$ in the homotopy category, and the last two - in the derived category. We study their properties and relations. These functors are defined on the category of artinian (not necessarily commutative) DG algebras.
Using Bloch-Ogus theorem and Chern character from K-theory to cyclic homology, we answer a question of Green and Griffiths on extending Bloch formula. Moreover, we construct a map from local Hilbert functor to local cohomology. With suitable assumptions, we use this map to answer a question of Bloch on constructing a natural transformation from local Hilbert functor to cohomological Chow groups.
We study several deformation functors associated to the normalization of a reduced curve singularity $(X,0) \subset (\c^n,0)$. The main new results are explicit formulas, in terms of classical invariants of (X,0), for the cotangent cohomology groups $T^i, i = 0,1,2,$ of these functors. Thus we obtain precise statements about smoothness and dimension of the corresponding local moduli spaces. We apply the results to obtain explicit formulas resp. estimates for the $\hoa{A}_e$-codimension of a parametrized curve singularity, where $\hoa{A}_e$ denotes the Mather-Wall group of left-right equivalenc…
We construct the deformation functor associated to a couple of morphisms of differential graded Lie algebras, and use it to study the infinitesimal deformations of a holomorphic map of compact complex manifolds. In particular, in the case of Kähler manifolds we describe a generalizzation of the semiregularity map.
This paper is devoted to deformation theory of graded Lie algebras over $\Z$ or $\Z_l$ with finite dimensional graded pieces. Such deformation problems naturally appear in number theory. In the first part of the paper, we use Schlessinger criteria for functors on Artin local rings in order to obtain universal deformation rings for deformations of graded Lie algebras and their graded representations. In the second part, we use a version of Schlessinger criteria for functors on the Artinian category of nilpotent Lie algebras which is formulated by Pridham, and explore arithmetic deformations usi…
In this article, we investigate deformations of a Calabi-Yau manifold $Z$ in a toric variety $F$, possibly not smooth. In particular, we prove that the forgetful morphism from the Hilbert functor $H^F_Z$ of infinitesimal deformations of $Z$ in $F$ to the functor of infinitesimal deformations of $Z$ is smooth. This implies the smoothness of $H^F_Z $ at the corresponding point in the Hilbert scheme. Moreover, we give some examples and include some computations on the Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau manifolds in Fano toric varieties.
This article presents a new approach to the unobstructedness result for deformations of Calabi-Yau varieties by introducing the tangent lifting property for a functor on artinian local algebras. The verification that the deformation functor of a Calabi-Yau variety in characteristic 0 fulfills the tangent lifting property uses, just as the verification of the $T^1$-lifting property, the degeneration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence. Our main use of our methods is however to the mixed characteristic case. In that case to be able to verify the conditions needed one needs an extension of …
We construct the deformation functor associated with a pair of morphisms of differential graded Lie algebras, and use it to study infinitesimal deformations of holomorphic maps of compact complex manifolds. In particular, using L-infinity structures, we give an explicit description of the differential graded Lie algebra that controls this problem.
We provide a prorepresenting object for the noncommutative derived deformation problem of deforming a module $X$ over a differential graded algebra. Roughly, we show that the corresponding deformation functor is homotopy prorepresented by the dual bar construction on the derived endomorphism algebra of $X$. We specialise to the case when $X$ is one-dimensional over the base field, and introduce the notion of framed deformations, which rigidify the problem slightly and allow us to obtain derived analogues of the results of Ed Segal's thesis. Our main technical tool is Koszul duality, following …
Consider the functor describing deformations of a representation of the fundamental group of a variety X. This paper is chiefly concerned with establishing an analogue in finite characteristic of a result proved by Goldman and Millson for compact Kahler manifolds. By applying the Weil Conjectures instead of Hodge theory, we see that if X is a smooth proper variety defined over a finite field, and we consider deformations of certain continuous l-adic representations of the algebraic fundamental group, then the hull of the deformation functor will be defined by quadratic equations. Moreover, if …
Building on Schlessinger's work, we define a framework for studying geometric deformation problems which allows us to systematize the relationship between the local and global tangent and obstruction spaces of a deformation problem. Starting from Schlessinger's functors of Artin rings, we proceed in two steps: we replace functors to sets by categories fibered in groupoids, allowing us to keep track of automorphisms, and we work with deformation problems naturally associated to a scheme X, and which naturally localize on X, so that we can formalize the local behavior. The first step is already …
Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional smooth unital cyclic $A_\infty$-algebra. Assume furthermore that $A$ satisfies the Hodge-to-de-Rham degeneration property. In this short note, we prove the non-commutative analogue of the Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov theorem: the deformation functor associated with the differential graded Lie algebra of Hochschild cochains of $A$ is smooth. Furthermore, the deformation functor associated with the DGLA of cyclic Hochschild cochains of $A$ is also smooth.
Consider a formal (mixed-characteristic) deformation functor D of a representation of a finite group G as automorphisms of a power series ring k[[t]] over a perfect field k of positive characteristic. Assume that the action of G is weakly ramified, i.e., the second ramification group is trivial. Examples of such representations are provided by a group action on an ordinary curve: the action of a ramification group on the completed local ring of any point on such a curve is weakly ramified. We prove that the only such D that are not pro-representable occur if k has characteristic two and G is o…
This paper gives an elementary introduction to noncommutative deformations of modules. The main results of this deformation theory are due to Laudal. Let k be an algebraically closed (commutative) field, let A be an associative k-algebra, and let M = {M_1, ..., M_p} be a finite family of left A-modules. We study the simultaneous formal deformations of the family M, described by the noncommutative deformation functor Def(M): a(p) -> Sets introduced by Laudal. In particular, we prove that the deformation functor Def(M) has a pro-representing hull H(M), unique up to non-canonical isomorphism, and…
This paper gives a canonical construction, in terms of additive cohomological functors, of the universal formal deformation of a compact complex manifold without vector fields (more generally of a faithful $g$-module, where $g$ is a sheaf of Lie algebras without sections). The construction is based on a certain (multivariate) Jacobi complex $J(g)$ associatd to $g$: indeed ${\mathbb C}\oplus {\mathbb H}^0(J(g))^*$ is precisely the base ring of the universal deformation.
We present the extended Kuranishi space for Kodaira surface as a non-trivial example to Kontsevich and Barannikov's extended deformation theory. We provide a non-trivial example of Hertling-Manin's weak Frobenius manifold. In addition, we find that Kodaira surface is its own mirror image. Our computation is done in the context of compact nilmanifolds. The calculation of extended deformation and the weak Frobenius structure is based on Merkulov's perturbation method. The approach to relating symplectic structure and complex structure is inspired by Gualtieri's work on generalized complex struct…
It is known that generalized deformation in the sense of Hitchin-Gaultieri is a geometric realization of the degree-2 component of Kontsevich-Barannikov's homological approach to extended deformation. Through extended deformation, one associates a Frobenius structure to the extended moduli space. In this notes, we prove that on primary Kodaira manifolds the restriction of the Frobenius structure on the degree-2 component of the extended moduli space is trivial. It generalizes the author's past observation on Kodaira surface.
