This revision mostly makes changes in terminology to match the published version of the paper. In particular, we now call our estimates `Li--Yau--Hamilton inequalities'. (51 pages)
We generalize Hamilton's matrix Li-Yau-type Harnack estimate for the Ricci flow by considering the space of all LYH (Li-Yau-Hamilton) quadratics that arise as curvature tensors of space-time connections satisfying the Ricci flow with respect to the natural space-time degenerate metric. As a special case, we employ scaling arguments to derive a linear-type matrix LYH estimate. The new LYH quadratics obtained in this way are associated to the system of the Ricci flow coupled to a 1-form and a 2-form evolving by heat-type equations. In the case of a Kaehler solution, a special case of our linear-type trace LYH estimate is weaker than but qualitatively equivalent to Hamilton's trace estimate.
In this paper we derive Cheng-Yau, Li-Yau, Hamilton estimates for Riemannian manifolds with Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature bounded from below, and also global and local upper bounds, in terms of Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature, for the Hessian of positive and bounded solutions of the weighted heat equation on a closed Riemannian manifold.
We show that, up to the flow of the soliton vector field, there exists a unique complete steady gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton in every Kähler class of an equivariant crepant resolution of a Calabi-Yau cone converging at a polynomial rate to Cao's steady gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton on the cone.
Yau's uniformization conjecture states: a complete noncompact Kähler manifold with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature is biholomorphic to $\ce^n$. The Kähler-Ricci flow has provided a powerful tool in understanding the conjecture, and has been used to verify the conjecture in several important cases. In this article we present a survey of the Kähler-Ricci flow with focus on its application to uniformization. Other interesting methods and results related to the study of Yau's conjecture are also discussed.
We show a connection between the linear trace Li-Yau-Hamilton inequality for the Kaehler-Ricci flow and the monotonicity formula for the positive currents. As an application of the linear trace Li-Yau-Hamilton stated in this paper and the one proved by Chow-Hamiltonm, we give another proof on the classification of the limit solutions of the Kaehler-Ricci (Ricci) flow.
In this paper, motivated by the work of Qi S. Zhang in [28], we derive Li-Yau gradient bounds for positive solutions of the f-heat equation on closed manifolds with Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature bounded below.
This article shows that if the negative part of Ricci curvature lies in the Kato class, the heat kernel satisfies a Li-Yau type estimate. Additionally, using the resulting heat kernel bound, we show that the obtained heat kernel estimate leads to bounds on the first Betti number only depending on the Kato constant.
We prove that the sharp Li-Yau equality holds for the conjugate heat kernel on shrinking Ricci solitons without any curvature or volume assumptions. This quantity yields several estimates which allows us to classify four dimensional, non-compact shrinking Ricci solitons, which arise as Type I singularity models to the Ricci flow.
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1012.2940. We further investigate the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics under degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. We extend Theorem 1.1 in arXiv:1012.2940 by removing the condition on existence of crepant resolutions for Calabi-Yau varieties.
We study a class of asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat Kähler metrics arising on quasiprojective manifolds. Using the Calabi--Yau geometry and analysis and the Kodaira--Kuranishi--Spencer theory and building up on results of N.Koiso for the case of compact manifolds, we show that under rather general hypotheses any `small' asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat deformations of asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat Kähler metrics are again Kähler, possibly with respect to a perturbed complex structure. We also find the dimension of the moduli space for these small deformations. In the class o…
This is a survey article of the recent progresses on the metric behaviour of Ricci-flat Kähler-Einstein metrics along degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds.
We prove a Li-Yau gradient estimate for positive solutions to the heat equation, with Neumann boundary conditions, on a compact Riemannian submanifold with boundary ${\bf M}^n\subseteq {\bf N}^n$, satisfying the integral Ricci curvature assumption: \begin{equation} D^2 \sup_{x\in {\bf N}} \left( \oint_{B(x,D)} |Ric^-|^p dy \right)^{\frac{1}{p}} < K \end{equation} for $K(n,p)$ small enough, $p>n/2$, where $diam({\bf M})\leq D$. The boundary of ${\bf M}$ is not necessarily convex, but it needs to satisfy the interior rolling $R-$ball condition.
We study the fast diffusion equation (FDE) with a linear forcing term under the Ricci flow on complete manifolds with bounded curvature and nonnegative curvature operator. We prove Aronson-Bénilan and Li-Yau-Hamilton type differential Harnack estimates for positive solutions of the FDE. In addition, we use similar method to prove certain Li-Yau-Hamilton estimates for the heat equation and conjugate heat equation which extend those obtained by X. Cao and R. Hamilton, X. Cao, and S. Kuang and Q. Zhang to noncompact setting.
Let $X$ be a Kähler manifold which is fibered over a complex manifold $Y$ such that every fiber is a Calabi-Yau manifold. Let $ω$ be a fixed Kähler form on $X$. By Yau's theorem, there exists a unique Ricci-flat Kähler form $ρ\vert_{X_y}$ for each fiber, which is cohomologous to $ω\vert_{X_y}$. This family of Ricci-flat Kähler forms $ρ\vert_{X_y}$ induces a smooth $(1,1)$-form $ρ$ on $X$ with a normalization condition. In this paper, we prove that the direct image of $ρ^{n+1}$ is positive on the base $Y$. We also discuss several byproducts, among them the local triviality of families of Calabi…
We prove that the Ricci flow that contracts a hyperbolic cusp has curvature decay like one over time squared. In order to do this, we prove a new Li-Yau type differential Harnack inequality for Ricci flow on surfaces.
We derive an adaptation of Li & Yau estimates for positive solutions of semilinear heat equations on Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci tensor. We then apply these estimates to obtain a Harnack inequality and to discuss monotonicity, convexity, decay estimates and triviality of ancient and eternal solutions.
In this note, we obtain existence results for complete Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on crepant resolutions of singularities of Calabi-Yau varieties. Furthermore, for certain asymptotically flat Calabi-Yau varieties, we show that the Ricci-flat metric on the resolved manifold has the same asymptotic behavior as the initial variety.
In this paper, we study the behavior of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds under algebraic geometric surgeries: extremal transitions or flops. We prove a version of Candelas and de la Ossa's conjecture: Ricci-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds related by extremal transitions and flops can be connected by a path consisting of continuous families of Ricci-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds and a compact metric space in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology. In an essential step of the proof of our main result, the convergence of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds along a smoothing is establi…
We study the degenerations of asymptotically conical Ricci-flat Kähler metrics as the Kähler class degenerates to a semi-positive class. We show that under appropriate assumptions, the Ricci-flat Kähler metrics converge to a incomplete smooth Ricci-flat Kähler metric away from a compact subvariety. As a consequence, we construct singular Calabi-Yau metrics with asymptotically conical behaviour at infinity on certain quasi-projective varieties and we show that the metric geometry of these singular metrics are homeomorphic to the topology of the singular variety. Finally, we will apply our resul…
In this paper, we provide new examples of Levi-Civita Ricci-flat Hermitian metrics on certain compact non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds, including every compact Hermitian Weyl-Einstein manifold, every compact locally conformal hyperKähler manifold, certain suspensions of Brieskorn manifolds, and every generalized Hopf manifold provided by suspensions of exotic spheres. These examples generalize previous constructions on Hopf manifolds. Additionally, we also construct new examples of compact Hermitian manifolds with nonnegative first Chern class that admit constant strictly negative Riemannian sc…
Let $(X, D)$ be a log variety with an effective holomorphic torus action, and $Θ$ be a closed positive $(1,1)$-current. For any smooth positive function $g$ defined on the moment polytope of the torus action, we study the Monge-Ampère equations that correspond to generalized and twisted Kähler-Ricci $g$-solitons. We prove a version of Yau-Tian-Donaldson (YTD) conjecture for these general equations, showing that the existence of solutions is always equivalent to an equivariantly uniform $Θ$-twisted $g$-Ding-stability. When $Θ$ is a current associated to a torus invariant linear system, we furth…
In this paper we study the heat equation (of Hodge-Laplacian) deformation of $(p, p)$-forms on a Kähler manifold. After identifying the condition and establishing that the positivity of a $(p, p)$-form solution is preserved under such an invariant condition we prove the sharp differential Harnack (in the sense of Li-Yau-Hamilton) estimates for the positive solutions of the Hodge-Laplacian heat equation. We also prove a nonlinear version coupled with the Kähler-Ricci flow and some interpolating matrix differential Harnack type estimates for both the Kähler-Ricci flow and the Ricci flow.
We prove that if an ALE Ricci-flat manifold $(M,g)$ is linearly stable and integrable, it is dynamically stable under Ricci flow, i.e. any Ricci flow starting close to g exists for all time and converges modulo diffeomorphism to an ALE Ricci-flat metric close to $g$. By adapting Tian's approach in the closed case, we show that integrability holds for ALE Calabi-Yau manifolds which implies that they are dynamically stable.
We consider the Kähler-Ricci flow on certain Calabi-Yau fibration, which is a Calabi-Yau fibration with one dimensional base or a product of two Calabi-Yau fibrations with one dimensional bases. Assume the Kähler-Ricci flow on total space admits a uniform lower bound for Ricci curvature, then the flow converges in Gromov-Hausdorff topology to the metric completion of the regular part of generalized Kähler-Einstein current on the base, which is a compact length metric space homeomorphic to the base. The analogue results for the continuity method on such Calabi-Yau fibrations are also obtained. …
In this paper we prove a new matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate for Kähler-Ricci flow. The form of this new Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate is obtained by the interpolation consideration originated in \cite{Ch1}. This new inequality is shown to be connected with Perelman's entropy formula through a family of differential equalities. In the rest of the paper, We show several applications of this new estimate and its linear version proved earlier in \cite{CN}. These include a sharp heat kernel comparison theorem, generalizing the earlier result of Li and Tian, a manifold version of Stoll's theorem on the …
We prove the Bochner-Weitzenböck formula for the (nonlinear) Laplacian on general Finsler manifolds and derive Li-Yau type gradient estimates as well as parabolic Harnack inequalities. Moreover, we deduce Bakry-Émery gradient estimates. All these estimates depend on lower bounds for the weighted flag Ricci tensor.
We proved a matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton type gradient estimates for the positive solutin of the heat equation on complete Kaehler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature. As a consequence we obtain a comparison theorem for the distance function under this curvature assumption.
We study the behaviour of families of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on a projective Calabi-Yau manifold when the Kahler classes degenerate to the boundary of the ample cone. We prove that if the limit class is big and nef the Ricci-flat metrics converge smoothly on compact sets outside a subvariety to a limit incomplete Ricci-flat metric. The limit can also be understood from algebraic geometry.
In [10], R. Hamilton established a differential Harnack inequality for solutions to the Ricci flow with nonnegative curvature operator. We show that this inequality holds under the weaker condition that M x R^2 has nonnegative isotropic curvature.
In this paper we prove a matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton inequality for the Green function on complete Kähler manifolds with nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature. This estimate can be seen as an elliptic analogue of the matrix estimate of Cao and Ni for the heat equation on Kähler manifolds, or the complex analogue of the estimate for Riemannian manifolds obtained previously by the author.
A fundamental tool in the analysis of Ricci flow is a compactness result of Hamilton in the spirit of the work of Cheeger, Gromov and others. Roughly speaking it allows one to take a sequence of Ricci flows with uniformly bounded curvature and uniformly controlled injectivity radius, and extract a subsequence that converges to a complete limiting Ricci flow. A widely quoted extension of this result allows the curvature to be bounded uniformly only in a local sense. However, in this note we give a counterexample.
We study adiabatic limits of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on a Calabi-Yau manifold which is the total space of a holomorphic fibration when the volume of the fibers goes to zero. By establishing some new a priori estimates for the relevant complex Monge-Ampere equation, we show that the Ricci-flat metrics collapse (away from the singular fibers) to a metric on the base of the fibration. This metric has Ricci curvature equal to a Weil-Petersson metric that measures the variation of complex structure of the Calabi-Yau fibers. This generalizes results of Gross-Wilson for K3 surfaces to higher dimens…
This article is devoted to the study of several estimations for a positive solution to a nonlinear weighted parabolic equation on a weighted Riemannian manifold. We therefore derive new Li-Yau type and Hamilton type gradient estimates yielding several consequences. We also derive Hessian estimate and some corollaries for the same equation. Among the applications of our estimates discussed here are Harnack type inequalities, Liouville type theorems and a local time reversed Harnack inequality.
Motivated from mathematical aspects of the superstring theory, we introduce a new equation on a balanced, hermitian manifold, with zero first Chern class. Solving the equation, one will obtain, in each Bott--Chern cohomology class, a balanced metric which is hermitian Ricci--flat. This can be viewed as a differential form level generalization of the classical Calabi--Yau equation. We establish the existence and uniqueness of the equation on complex tori, and prove certain uniqueness and openness on a general Kähler manifold.
This note studies the equivalencies among convergences of Ricci-flat Kähler-Einstein metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds, cohomology classes and potential functions.
This is an expository paper which aims to give a simple proof of the existence of Ricci-flat metrics on certain K3 surfaces, as an illustration of general "glueing" techniques.
We prove a linear trace Li-Yau-Hamilton inequality for the Kaehler-Ricci flow. We then use this sharp differential inequality to study the Liouville properties of the plurisubharmonic functions on complete Kaehler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature.
Open Calabi-Yau manifolds and log Calabi-Yau varieties have been broadly studied over decades. Regarding them as "semistable" objects, we propose to consider their good proper subclass, which we regard as certain poly-stable ones, morally corresponding to semistable with closed (minimal) orbits} as the classical analogue of GIT. We partially confirm that the new polystability seems equivalent to the existence of non-compact complete Ricci-flat Kahler metrics with small volume growths, notably many examples of gravitational instantons. Also, we prove some compactness or polystable reduction typ…
