In this paper we prove a new matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate for Kähler-Ricci flow. The form of this new Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate is obtained by the interpolation consideration originated in \cite{Ch1}. This new inequality is shown to be connected with Perelman's entropy formula through a family of differential equalities. In the rest of the paper, We show several applications of this new estimate and its linear version proved earlier in \cite{CN}. These include a sharp heat kernel comparison theorem, generalizing the earlier result of Li and Tian, a manifold version of Stoll's theorem on the characterization of `algebraic divisors', and a localized monotonicity formula for analytic subvarieties.
Motivated by the connection between the heat kernel estimate and the reduced volume monotonicity of Perelman, we prove a sharp lower bound heat kernel estimate for the time-dependent heat equation, which is, in a certain sense, dual to Perelman's monotonicity of the `reduced volume'. As an application of this new monotonicity formula, we show that the blow-down limit of a certain type III immortal solution is a gradient expanding soliton.
In the last section we also illustrate the connection between the new Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate and the earlier Hessian comparison theorem on the `reduced distance', proved in \cite{FIN}.
In this paper we study the heat equation (of Hodge-Laplacian) deformation of $(p, p)$-forms on a Kähler manifold. After identifying the condition and establishing that the positivity of a $(p, p)$-form solution is preserved under such an invariant condition we prove the sharp differential Harnack (in the sense of Li-Yau-Hamilton) estimates for the positive solutions of the Hodge-Laplacian heat equation. We also prove a nonlinear version coupled with the Kähler-Ricci flow and some interpolating matrix differential Harnack type estimates for both the Kähler-Ricci flow and the Ricci flow.
We derive an interpolation version of constrained matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate on Kähler manifolds. As a result, we first get a constrained matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton estimate for heat equation on a Kähler manifold with fixed Kähler metric. Secondly, we get a corresponding estimate for forward conjugate heat equation on Kähler manifolds with time dependent Kähler metrics evolving by Kähler-Ricci flow.
We study the degenerations of asymptotically conical Ricci-flat Kähler metrics as the Kähler class degenerates to a semi-positive class. We show that under appropriate assumptions, the Ricci-flat Kähler metrics converge to a incomplete smooth Ricci-flat Kähler metric away from a compact subvariety. As a consequence, we construct singular Calabi-Yau metrics with asymptotically conical behaviour at infinity on certain quasi-projective varieties and we show that the metric geometry of these singular metrics are homeomorphic to the topology of the singular variety. Finally, we will apply our resul…
We show that, up to the flow of the soliton vector field, there exists a unique complete steady gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton in every Kähler class of an equivariant crepant resolution of a Calabi-Yau cone converging at a polynomial rate to Cao's steady gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton on the cone.
We consider the Kähler-Ricci flow on certain Calabi-Yau fibration, which is a Calabi-Yau fibration with one dimensional base or a product of two Calabi-Yau fibrations with one dimensional bases. Assume the Kähler-Ricci flow on total space admits a uniform lower bound for Ricci curvature, then the flow converges in Gromov-Hausdorff topology to the metric completion of the regular part of generalized Kähler-Einstein current on the base, which is a compact length metric space homeomorphic to the base. The analogue results for the continuity method on such Calabi-Yau fibrations are also obtained. …
We construct balanced metrics on the family of non-Kähler Calabi-Yau threefolds that are obtained by smoothing after contracting $(-1,-1)$-rational curves on Kähler Calabi-Yau threefold. As an application, we construct balanced metrics on complex manifolds diffeomorphic to connected sum of $k\geq 2$ copies of $S^3\times S^3$.
In this note, we obtain existence results for complete Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on crepant resolutions of singularities of Calabi-Yau varieties. Furthermore, for certain asymptotically flat Calabi-Yau varieties, we show that the Ricci-flat metric on the resolved manifold has the same asymptotic behavior as the initial variety.
In this paper we prove a matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton inequality for the Green function on complete Kähler manifolds with nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature. This estimate can be seen as an elliptic analogue of the matrix estimate of Cao and Ni for the heat equation on Kähler manifolds, or the complex analogue of the estimate for Riemannian manifolds obtained previously by the author.
Yau's uniformization conjecture states: a complete noncompact Kähler manifold with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature is biholomorphic to $\ce^n$. The Kähler-Ricci flow has provided a powerful tool in understanding the conjecture, and has been used to verify the conjecture in several important cases. In this article we present a survey of the Kähler-Ricci flow with focus on its application to uniformization. Other interesting methods and results related to the study of Yau's conjecture are also discussed.
We give an elementary proof to the asymptotic expansion formula of Rochon-Zhang for the unique complete Kähler-Einstein metric of Cheng-Yau, Kobayashi, Tian-Yau and Bando on quasi-projective manifolds. The main tools are the solution formula for second order ODE's with constant coefficients and spectral theory for Laplacian operator on a closed manifold.
In this paper we are concerned with the matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton estimates for nonlinear heat equations. Firstly, we derive such estimate on a Kähler manifold with a fixed Kähler metric. Then we consider the estimate on Kähler manifolds with Kähler metrics evolving under the rescaled Kähler-Ricci flow. Both of the estimates are generalized to constrained cases. Finally, we extend the estimtes to more general nonlinear heat equations on both Riemannian manifolds and Kähler manifolds.
We formulate a Calabi-Yau type conjecture in generalized Kähler geometry, focusing on the case of nondegenerate Poisson structure. After defining natural Hamiltonian deformation spaces for generalized Kähler structures generalizing the notion of Kähler class, we conjecture unique solvability of Gualtieri's Calabi-Yau equation within this class. We establish the uniqueness, and moreover show that all such solutions are actually hyper-Kähler metrics. We furthermore establish a GIT framework for this problem, interpreting solutions of this equation as zeros of a moment map associated to a Hamilto…
We study a class of asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat Kähler metrics arising on quasiprojective manifolds. Using the Calabi--Yau geometry and analysis and the Kodaira--Kuranishi--Spencer theory and building up on results of N.Koiso for the case of compact manifolds, we show that under rather general hypotheses any `small' asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat deformations of asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat Kähler metrics are again Kähler, possibly with respect to a perturbed complex structure. We also find the dimension of the moduli space for these small deformations. In the class o…
We study the behaviour of families of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on a projective Calabi-Yau manifold when the Kahler classes degenerate to the boundary of the ample cone. We prove that if the limit class is big and nef the Ricci-flat metrics converge smoothly on compact sets outside a subvariety to a limit incomplete Ricci-flat metric. The limit can also be understood from algebraic geometry.
Let X be a compact Kahler orbifold without \C-codimension-1 singularities. Let D be a suborbifold divisor in X such that D \supset Sing(X) and -pK_X = q[D] for some p, q \in \N with q > p. Assume that D is Fano. We prove the following two main results. (1) If D is Kahler-Einstein, then, applying results from our previous paper, we show that each Kahler class on X\D contains a unique asymptotically conical Ricci-flat Kahler metric, converging to its tangent cone at infinity at a rate of O(r^{-1-ε}) if X is smooth. This provides a definitive version of a theorem of Tian and Yau. (2) We introduce…
This is a survey of our recent work on degenerations of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on compact Calabi-Yau manifolds with Kahler classes approaching the boundary of the Kahler cone.
Let $(X, D)$ be a log variety with an effective holomorphic torus action, and $Θ$ be a closed positive $(1,1)$-current. For any smooth positive function $g$ defined on the moment polytope of the torus action, we study the Monge-Ampère equations that correspond to generalized and twisted Kähler-Ricci $g$-solitons. We prove a version of Yau-Tian-Donaldson (YTD) conjecture for these general equations, showing that the existence of solutions is always equivalent to an equivariantly uniform $Θ$-twisted $g$-Ding-stability. When $Θ$ is a current associated to a torus invariant linear system, we furth…
Let $X_0$ be an affine variety with only normal isolated singularity $p$ and $π: X\to X_0$ a smooth resolution of the singularity with trivial canonical line bundle $K_X$. If the complement of the affine variety $X_0\backslash\{p\}$ is the cone $C(S)=\Bbb R_{>0}\times S$ of an Einstein-Sasakian manifold $S$, we shall prove that the crepant resolution $X$ of $X_0$ admits a complete Ricci-flat Kähler metric in every Kähler class in $H^2(X)$. We apply the continuity method for solving the Monge-Ampère equation to obtain a relevant existence theorem and a uniqueness theorem of Ricci-flat conical K…
Let (M, ω) be a compact symplectic 4-manifold with a compatible almost complex structure J. The problem of finding a J-compatible symplectic form with prescribed volume form is an almost-Kähler analogue of Yau's theorem and is connected to a programme in symplectic topology proposed by Donaldson. We call the corresponding equation for the symplectic form the Calabi-Yau equation. Solutions are unique in their cohomology class. It is shown in this paper that a solution to this equation exists if the Nijenhuis tensor is small in a certain sense. Without this assumption, it is shown that the probl…
We study the behaviour of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow on complete Kähler manifolds of negative holomorphic sectional curvature. We show that the flow exists for all time and converges to a Kähler-Einstein metric of negative scalar curvature, recovering a result of Wu and Yau.
In arXiv:1008.1018 it is shown that a given stable vector bundle $V$ on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ which satisfies $c_2(X)=c_2(V)$ can be deformed to a solution of the Strominger system and the equations of motion of heterotic string theory. In this note we extend this result to the polystable case and construct explicit examples of polystable bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds where it applies. The polystable bundle is given by a spectral cover bundle, for the visible sector, and a suitably chosen bundle, for the hidden sector. This provides a new class of heterotic flux co…
Let $X$ be a Kähler manifold which is fibered over a complex manifold $Y$ such that every fiber is a Calabi-Yau manifold. Let $ω$ be a fixed Kähler form on $X$. By Yau's theorem, there exists a unique Ricci-flat Kähler form $ρ\vert_{X_y}$ for each fiber, which is cohomologous to $ω\vert_{X_y}$. This family of Ricci-flat Kähler forms $ρ\vert_{X_y}$ induces a smooth $(1,1)$-form $ρ$ on $X$ with a normalization condition. In this paper, we prove that the direct image of $ρ^{n+1}$ is positive on the base $Y$. We also discuss several byproducts, among them the local triviality of families of Calabi…
In the neighborhood of a regular point, generalized Kahler geometry admits a description in terms of a single real function, the generalized Kahler potential. We study the local conditions for a generalized Kahler manifold to be a generalized Calabi-Yau manifold and we derive a non-linear PDE that the generalized Kahler potential has to satisfy for this to be true. This non-linear PDE can be understood as a generalization of the complex Monge-Ampere equation and its solutions give supergravity solutions with metric, dilaton and H-field.
In this paper we introduce a new equation on the compact Kahler manifolds. Solution of this equation corresponds to the Calabi-Yau metric. New equation differs from the Monge--Ampere equation considered by Calabi and Yau.
Hermitian, pluriclosed metrics with vanishing Bismut-Ricci form give a natural extension of Calabi-Yau metrics to the setting of complex, non-Kähler manifolds, and arise independently in mathematical physics. We reinterpret this condition in terms of the Hermitian-Einstein equation on an associated holomorphic Courant algebroid, and thus refer to solutions as Bismut Hermitian-Einstein. This implies Mumford-Takemoto slope stability obstructions, and using these we exhibit infinitely many topologically distinct complex manifolds in every dimension with vanishing first Chern class which do not ad…
We study adiabatic limits of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on a Calabi-Yau manifold which is the total space of a holomorphic fibration when the volume of the fibers goes to zero. By establishing some new a priori estimates for the relevant complex Monge-Ampere equation, we show that the Ricci-flat metrics collapse (away from the singular fibers) to a metric on the base of the fibration. This metric has Ricci curvature equal to a Weil-Petersson metric that measures the variation of complex structure of the Calabi-Yau fibers. This generalizes results of Gross-Wilson for K3 surfaces to higher dimens…
In this paper, we provide new examples of Levi-Civita Ricci-flat Hermitian metrics on certain compact non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds, including every compact Hermitian Weyl-Einstein manifold, every compact locally conformal hyperKähler manifold, certain suspensions of Brieskorn manifolds, and every generalized Hopf manifold provided by suspensions of exotic spheres. These examples generalize previous constructions on Hopf manifolds. Additionally, we also construct new examples of compact Hermitian manifolds with nonnegative first Chern class that admit constant strictly negative Riemannian sc…
Motivated by the results of Wu-Yau-Zheng \cite{WuYauZheng}, we show that under a certain curvature assumption the harmonic representative of any boundary class of the Kähler cone is nonnegative.
On Kahler manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below, we establish some theorems which are counterparts of some classical theorems in Riemannian geometry, for example, Bishop-Gromov's relative volume comparison, Bonnet-Meyers theorem, and Yau's gradient estimate for positive harmonic functions. The tool is a Bochner type formula reflecting the Kahler structure.
We construct a geometric model of eight-dimensional manifolds and realize them in the context of type II string theory. These eight-manifolds are constructed by non-trivial $T^{4}$ fibrations over Calabi-Yau two-folds. These give rise to eight-dimensional non-Kahler Hermitian manifolds with $SU(4)$ structure. The eight-manifold is also a circle fibration over a seven-dimensional $G_{2}$ manifold with skew torsion. The eight-manifolds of this type appear as internal manifolds with $SU(4)$ structure in type IIB string theory with $F_{3}$ and $F_{7}$ fluxes. These manifolds have generalized calib…
We give a method to construct Calabi-Yau metrics on G-invariant vector bundles over Kahler coset spaces G/H using supersymmetric nonlinear realizations with matter coupling. As a concrete example we discuss the CP^N model coupled with matter. The canonical line bundle is reproduced by the singlet matter and the cotangent bundle with a new non-compact Calabi-Yau metric which is not hyper-Kahler is obtained by the anti-fundamental matter.
Motivated by the classical statements of Mirror Symmetry, we study certain Kahler metrics on the complexified Kahler cone of a Calabi-Yau threefold, conjecturally corresponding to approximations to the Weil-Petersson metric near large complex structure limit for the mirror. In particular, the naturally defined Riemannian metric (defined via cup-product) on a level set of the Kahler cone is seen to be analogous to a slice of the Weil-Petersson metric near large complex limit. This enables us to give counterexamples to a conjecture of Ooguri and Vafa that the Weil-Petersson metric has non-positi…
This note studies the equivalencies among convergences of Ricci-flat Kähler-Einstein metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds, cohomology classes and potential functions.
The Kummer Construction of Calabi-Yau and Hyper-Kähler Metrics on the $K3$ Surface, and Large Families of Volume Non-collapsed Limiting Compact Hyper-Kähler Orbifolds
Recently, Wu-Yau and Tosatti-Yang established the connection between the negativity of holomorphic sectional curvatures and the positivity of canonical bundles for compact Kähler manifolds. In this short note, we give anothe proof of their theorems by using the Kähler-Ricci flow.
We prove that the twisted Kahler-Einstein metrics that arise on the base of certain holomorphic fiber space with Calabi-Yau fibers have conical-type singularities along the discriminant locus. These fiber spaces arise naturally when studying the collapsing of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds, and of the Kahler-Ricci flow on compact Kahler manifolds with semiample canonical bundle and intermediate Kodaira dimension. Our results allow us to understand their collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limits when the base is smooth and the discriminant has simple normal crossings.
In this paper, we study the behavior of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds under algebraic geometric surgeries: extremal transitions or flops. We prove a version of Candelas and de la Ossa's conjecture: Ricci-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds related by extremal transitions and flops can be connected by a path consisting of continuous families of Ricci-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds and a compact metric space in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology. In an essential step of the proof of our main result, the convergence of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds along a smoothing is establi…
We establish the general formalism for constructing metrics of Calabi-Yau (p+1)-folds in terms of that of a p-fold by adding a complex-line bundle. We present a few explicit low-lying examples. We further consider holomorphic linearization and obtain the six-dimensional analogue of the Gibbons-Hawking instanton. Whilst the Kahler potential for the Gibbons-Hawking instanton is given by the harmonic function of a three-dimensional flat space, for the generalized solution it is related to the harmonic functions of certain three-dimensional non-flat spaces that are direct products of R and two-dim…
In the present work the local form of certain Calabi-Yau metrics possessing a local Hamiltonian Killing vector is described in terms of a single non linear equation. The main assumptions are that the complex $(3,0)$-form is of the form $e^{ik}\widetildeΨ$, where $\widetildeΨ$ is preserved by the Killing vector, and that the space of the orbits of the Killing vector is, for fixed value of the momentum map coordinate, a complex 4-manifold, in such a way that the complex structure of the 4-manifold is part of the complex structure of the complex 3-fold. The link with the solution generating techn…
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1012.2940. We further investigate the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics under degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. We extend Theorem 1.1 in arXiv:1012.2940 by removing the condition on existence of crepant resolutions for Calabi-Yau varieties.
We prove that a Kahler supermetric on a supermanifold with one complex fermionic dimension admits a super Ricci-flat supermetric if and only if the bosonic metric has vanishing scalar curvature. As a corollary, it follows that Yau's theorem does not hold for supermanifolds.
This is a survey article of the recent progresses on the metric behaviour of Ricci-flat Kähler-Einstein metrics along degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds.
