A Smale flow is a structurally stable flow with one dimensional invariant sets. We use information from homology and template theory to construct, visualize and in some cases, classify, nonsingular Smale flows in the 3-sphere.
In this paper, following J. Franks' work on Lyapunov graphs of nonsingular Smale flows on $S^3$, we study Lyapunov graphs of nonsingular Smale flows on $S^1 \times S^2$. More precisely, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions on an abstract Lyapunov graph to be associated with a nonsingular Smale flow on $S^1 \times S^2$. We also study the singular type vertices in Lyapunov graphs of nonsingular Smale flows on 3-manifolds.
We analyse the topological (knot-theoretic) features of a certain codimension-one bifurcation of a partially hyperbolic fixed point in a flow on $\real^3$ originally described by Shil'nikov. By modifying how the invariant manifolds wrap around themselves, or ``pleat,'' we may apply the theory of templates, or branched two-manifolds, to capture the topology of the flow. This analysis yields a class of flows which bifurcate from a Morse-Smale flow to a Smale flow containing periodic orbits of all knot and link types.
For a closed oriented 3-manifold $Y$ we define $n(Y)$ to be the minimal non-negative number such that in each homotopy class of non-singular vector fields of $Y$ there is a Morse-Smale vector field with less or equal to $n(Y)$ periodic orbits. We combine the construction process of Morse-Smale flows given in [2] with handle decompositions of compact orientable surfaces to provide an upper bound to the number $n(Y)$ for oriented Seifert manifolds and oriented graph manifolds prime to $\stwo\times\sone$.
In this paper, we first develope the concept of Lyapunov graph to weighted Lyapunov graph (abbreviated as WLG) for nonsingular Morse-Smale flows (abbreviated as NMS flows) on $S^3$. WLG is quite sensitive to NMS flows on $S^3$. For instance, WLG detect the indexed links of NMS flows. Then we use WLG and some other tools to describe nonsingular Morse-Smale flows without heteroclinic trajectories connecting saddle orbits (abbreviated as depth $0$ NMS flows). It mainly contains the following several directions: \begin{enumerate} \item we use WLG to list depth $0$ NMS flows on $S^3$; \item with th…
In this paper, we first discuss the regular level set of a nonsingular Smale flow (NSF) on a 3-manifold. The main result about this topic is that a 3-manifold $M$ admits an NSF flow which has a regular level set homeomorphic to $(n+1)T^{2}$ $(n\in \mathbb{Z}, n\geq 0)$ if and only if $M=M'\sharp n S^{1}\times S^{2}$. Then we discuss how to realize a template as a basic set of an NSF on a 3-manifold. We focus on the connection between the genus of the template $T$ and the topological structure of the realizing 3-manifold $M$.
It is known that $C^r$ Morse-Smale vector fields form an open dense subset in the space of vector fields on orientable closed surfaces and are structurally stable for any $r \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$. In particular, $C^r$ Morse vector fields (i.e. Morse-Smale vector fields without limit cycles) form an open dense subset in the space of $C^r$ gradient vector fields on orientable closed surfaces and are structurally stable. Therefore generic time evaluations of gradient flows on orientable closed surfaces (e.g. solutions of differential equations) are described by alternating sequences of Morse flows…
We prove that for every three-dimensional vector field, either it can be accumulated by Morse-Smale ones, or it can be accumulated by ones with a transverse homoclinic intersection of some hyperbolic periodic orbit in the $C^1$ topology.
We construct a topological invariant for a Morse-Smale flow on a 3-manifold and prove that the flows are topologically equivalent iff their invariants are same.
In this paper, we use abstract Lyapunov graphs as a combinatorial tool to obtain a complete classification of Smale flows on $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{S}^1$. This classification gives necessary and sufficient conditions that must be satisfied by an abstract Lyapunov graph in order for it to be associated to a Smale flow on $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{S}^1$.
J.~Palis found necessary conditions for a Morse-Smale diffeomorphism on a closed $n$-dimensional manifold $M^n$ to embed into a topological flow and proved that these conditions are also sufficient for $n=2$. For the case $n=3$ a possibility of wild embedding of closures of separatrices of saddles is an additional obstacle for Morse-Smale cascades to embed into topological flows. In this paper we show that there are no such obstructions for Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms without heteroclinic intersection given on the sphere $S^n, \,n\geq 4$, and Palis's conditions again are sufficient for such di…
In this paper, we first discuss some connections between template theory and the description of basic sets of Smale flows on 3-manifolds due to F. Béguin and C. Bonatti. The main tools we use are symbolic dynamics, template moves and some combinatorial surgeries. Second, we obtain some relationship between the surgeries and the number of $S^1 \times S^2$ factors of $M$ for a nonsingular Smale flow on a given closed orientable 3-manifold $M$. Besides these, we also prove that any template $T$ can model a basic set $Λ$ of a nonsingular Smale flow on $nS^1 \times S^2$ for some positive integer $n…
We prove that a Morse-Smale gradient-like flow on a closed manifold has a "system of compatible invariant stable foliations" that is analogous to the object introduced by Palis and Smale in their proof of the structural stability of Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms and flows, but with finer regularity and geometric properties. We show how these invariant foliations can be used in order to give a self-contained proof of the well-known but quite delicate theorem stating that the unstable manifolds of a Morse-Smale gradient-like flow on a closed manifold $M$ are the open cells of a $CW$-decomposition …
In this paper we build Non-singular Morse-Smale flows on S^3 with unknotted and unlinked saddle orbits by identifying fat round handles along their boundaries. This way of building the flows enables to get their phase portraits. We also show that the presence of heteroclinic trajectories imposes an order in the round handle decomposition of these flows; this order is total for NMS flows composed of one repulsive, one attractive and n unknotted saddle orbits, for n >1.
On a smooth, compact and oriented manifold without boundary, we give a complete description of the correlation function of a Morse-Smale gradient flow satisfying a certain nonresonance assumption. This is done by analyzing precisely the spectrum of the generator of such a flow acting on certain anisotropic spaces of currents. In particular, we prove that this dynamical spectrum is given by linear combinations with integer coefficients of the Lyapunov exponents at the critical points of the Morse function. Via this spectral analysis and in analogy with Hodge-de Rham theory, we give an interpret…
Dilation surfaces are generalizations of translation surfaces where the transition maps of the atlas are translations and homotheties with a positive ratio. In contrast with translation surfaces, the directional flow on dilation surfaces may contain trajectories accumulating on a limit cycle. Such a limit cycle is called hyperbolic because it induces a nontrivial homothety. It has been conjectured that a dilation surface with no actual hyperbolic closed geodesic is in fact a translation surface. Assuming that a dilation surface contains a horizon saddle connection, we prove that the directions…
We introduce a Milnor metric on the determinant line of the cohomology of the underlying closed manifold with coefficients in a flat vector bundle, by means of interactions between the fixed points and the closed orbits of a Morse-Smale flow. This allows us to generalise the notion of the absolute value at zero point of the Ruelle dynamical zeta function, even in the case where this value is not well defined in the classical sense. We give a formula relating the Milnor metric and the Ray-Singer metric. An essential ingredient of our proof is Bismut-Zhang's Theorem.
In this paper we're considering the question of whether or not a partial order on a finite set is realisable as a Smale order of a structurally stable diffeomorphism or flow acting on a closed manifold. We classify the orders that are realisable by 1) an $Ω$-stable diffeomorphism acting on a closed surface 2) an Anosov flow on a closed 3-manifold 3) a stable diffeomorphism with trivial attractors and repellers acting on a closed surface.
In the present paper the exhaustive topological classification of nonsingular Morse-Smale flows of $n$-manifolds with two limit cycles is presented. Hyperbolicity of periodic orbits implies that among them one is attracting and another is repelling. Due to Poincare-Hopf theorem Euler characteristic of closed manifold $M^n$ which admits the considered flows is equal to zero. Only torus and Klein bottle can be ambient manifolds for such flows in case of $n=2$. Authors established that there exist exactly two classes of topological equivalence of such flows of torus and three of the Klein bottle.…
This paper is concerned with index pairs in the sense of Conley index theory for flows relative to pseudo-gradient vector fields for $C^1$-functions satisfying Palais-Smale condition. We prove a deformation theorem for such index pairs to obtain a Lusternik-Schnirelmann type result in Conley index theory.
A Reeb vector field satisfies the Kupka-Smale condition when all its closed orbits are non-degenerate, and the stable and unstable manifolds of its hyperbolic closed orbits intersect transversely. We show that, on a closed 3-manifold, any Reeb vector field satisfying the Kupka-Smale condition admits a Birkhoff section. In particular, this implies that the Reeb vector field of a $C^\infty$-generic contact form on a closed 3-manifold admits a Birkhoff section, and that the geodesic vector field of a $C^\infty$-generic Riemannian metric on a closed surface admits a Birkhoff section.
On a smooth compact Riemannian manifold without boundary, we construct a finite dimensional cohomological complex of currents that are invariant by an Axiom A flow verifying Smale's transversality assumptions. The cohomology of that complex is isomorphic to the De Rham cohomology via certain spectral projectors. This construction is achieved by defining anisotropic Sobolev spaces adapted to the global dynamics of Axiom A flows. In the particular case of Morse-Smale gradient flows, this complex coincides with the classical Morse complex.
We study a topological structure of a closed $n$-manifold $M^n$ ($n\geq 3$) which admits a Morse-Smale diffeomorphism such that codimension one separatrices of saddles periodic points have no heteroclinic intersections different from heteroclinic points. Also we consider gradient like flow on $M^n$ such that codimension one separatices of saddle singularities have no intersection at all. We show that $M^n$ is either an $n$-sphere $S^n$, or the connected sum of a finite number of copies of $S^{n-1}\otimes S^1$ and a finite number of special manifolds $N^n_i$ admitting polar Morse-Smale systems.…
Lens spaces are the only 3-manifolds that admit gradient-like flows with four fixed points. This is an immediate corollary of Morse inequality and of the Morse function with four critical points existence. A similar question for gradient-like diffeomorphisms is open. Solution can be approached by describing a complete topological conjugacy invariant of the class of considered diffeomorphisms and constructing of representative diffeomorphism for every conjugacy class by the abstract invariant. Ch. Bonnati and V. Z. Grines proved that the topological conjugacy class of Morse-Smale flows with uni…
We investigate the topological structure of flows on the Girl's surfaces which is one of two possible immersions of the projective plane in three-dimensional space with one triple point of the selfintersection. First, we describe the cellular structure of the Boy's and Girl's surfaces and prove that there are unique images of the project plane in the form of a 2-disc, in which the opposite points of the boundary are identified and this boundary belongs to the preimage of the 1-skeleton of the surface. Second, we described three structures of flows with one fixed point and no separatrix on the …
We obtain Kupka-Smale theorem and Franks lemma for magnetic flows on manifolds with any dimension. This improves Miranda result on surfaces. However our methods relies on geometric control theory, like in Rifford and Ruggiero articles.
Robbin and Salamon showed that attractor-repellor networks and Lyapunov maps are equivalent concepts and illustrate this with the example of linear flows on projective spaces. In these examples the fixed points are linearly ordered with respect to the Smale order which makes the attractor-repellor network overly simple. In this paper we provide a class of examples in which the attractor-repellor network and its lattice structure can be explicitly determined even though the Smale order is not total. They are associated with special flows on complex flag manifolds. In the process we show that th…
For Morse-Smale pairs on a smooth, closed manifold the Morse-Smale-Witten chain complex can be defined. The associated Morse homology is isomorphic to the singular homology of the manifold and yields the classical Morse relations for Morse functions. A similar approach can be used to define homological invariants for isolated invariant sets of flows on a smooth manifold, which gives an analogue of the Conley index and the Morse-Conley relations. The approach will be referred to as Morse-Conley-Floer homology.
We construct topological invariants, called abstract weak orbit spaces, of flows and homeomorphisms on topological spaces, to describe both gradient dynamics and recurrent dynamics. In particular, the abstract weak orbit spaces of flows on topological spaces are generalizations of both Morse graphs of flows on compact metric spaces and Reeb graphs of Hamiltonian flows with finitely many singular points on surfaces. Moreover, we show that the abstract weak orbit spaces are complete and finite for several kinds of flows on manifolds, and we state several examples whose Morse graphs are singleton…
In the present paper, non-singular Morse-Smale flows on closed orientable 3-manifolds under the assumption that among the periodic orbits of the flow there is only one saddle one and it is twisted are considered. An exhaustive description of the topology of such manifolds is obtained. Namely, it has been established that any manifold admitting such flows is either a lens space, or a connected sum of a lens space with a projective space, or Seifert manifolds with base homeomorphic to sphere and three singular fibers. Since the latter are simple manifolds, the result obtained refutes the result …
Singular and sectional hyperbolic sets are the objects of the extension of the classical Smale Hyperbolic Theory to flows having invariant sets with singularities accumulated by regular orbits within the set. It is by now well-known that (partially) hyperbolic sets admit adapted metrics. We show the existence of singular adapted metrics for any singular hyperbolic set with respect to a $C^{1}$ vector field on finite dimensional compact manifolds. Moreover, we obtain 2-sectional adapted metrics for certain open classes of 2-sectional hyperbolic sets and also for any hyperbolic set.
This paper shows that the topological structures of particle orbits generated by a generic class of vector fields on spherical surfaces, called {\it the flow of finite type}, are in one-to-one correspondence with discrete structures such as trees/graphs and sequence of letters. The flow of finite type is an extension of structurally stable Hamiltonian vector fields, which appear in many theoretical and numerical investigations of 2D incompressible fluid flows. Moreover, it contains compressible 2D vector fields such as the Morse--Smale vector fields and the projection of 3D vector fields onto …
Let $ξ$ be an analytic vector field in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with an isolated singularity at the origin and having only hyperbolic singular points after a reduction of singularities $π:M\to\mathbb{R}^3$. The union of the images by $π$ of the local invariant manifolds at those hyperbolic points, denoted by $Λ$, is composed of trajectories of $ξ$ accumulating to $0 \in \mathbb{R}^3$. Assuming that there are no cycles nor polycycles on the divisor of $π$, together with a Morse-Smale type property and a non-resonance condition on the eigenvalues at these points, in this paper we prove the existence of a …
The theory of uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems was initiated in the 1960's (though its roots stretch far back into the 19th century) by S. Smale, his students and collaborators, in the west, and D. Anosov, Ya. Sinai, V. Arnold, in the former Soviet Union. It came to encompass a detailed description of a large class of systems, often with very complex evolution. Moreover, it provided a very precise characterization of structurally stable dynamics, which was one of its original main goals. The early developments were motivated by the problem of characterizing structural stability of dynami…
A topological classification of many classes of dynamical systems with regular dynamics in low dimensions is often reduced to combinatorial invariants. In dimension 3 combinatorial invariants are proved to be insufficient even for simplest Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms. The complete topological invariant for the systems with a single saddle point on the 3-sphere is the embedding of the homotopy non-trivial knot into the manifold $\mathbb S^2\times\mathbb S^1$. If a diffeomorphism has several saddle points their unstable separatrices form arcs frames in the basin of the sink and circles frame in …
