Recall that a pseudofree group action on a space is one whose singular set consists only of isolated points. In this paper, we classify all of the finite groups which admit pseudofree actions on S^2 x S^2. The groups turn out to be exactly the expected ones: those which admit orthogonal pseudofree actions on S^2 x S^2 as a subset of R^3 x R^3. They are explicitly listed.
This paper can be viewed as a companion to a paper of Edmonds, math.GT/9809055.
There are four groups $G$ fitting into a short exact sequence $ 1\rightarrow SL(2,5)\rightarrow G\rightarrow C_2\rightarrow 1, $ where $SL(2,5)$ is the special linear group of $(2\times 2)$-matrices with entries in the field of five elements. Except for the direct product of $SL(2,5)$ and $C_2$, there are two other semidirect products of these two groups and just one non-semidirect product $SL(2,5).C_2$, considered in this paper. It is known that each finite nonsolvable group can act on spheres with arbitrary positive number of fixed points. Clearly, $SL(2,5).C_2$ is a nonsolvable group. Moreo…
By a Cantor group we mean a topological group homeomorphic to the Cantor set. The author earlier proved that every compact metric space of rational cohomological dimension n can be obtained as the orbit space of a Cantor group action on a metric compact space of covering dimension n. In this paper, we consider actions of abelian Cantor groups and, in particular, we show that in the result mentioned above the Cantor group can be assumed to be abelian for n>1.
The action dimension of a discrete group $G$ is the minimum dimension of contractible manifold that admits a proper $G$-action. We compute the action dimension of the direct limit of a simple complex of groups for several classes of examples including: 1) Artin groups, 2) graph products of groups, and 3) fundamental groups of aspherical complements of arrangements of affine hyperplanes.
A classical result by K.B. Lee states that every group morphism between almost crystallographic groups is induced by an affine map on the nilpotent Lie group whereon these groups by definition act. It is the main technique for studying morphisms between virtually nilpotent groups, having important applications in fixed point theory, for example as a tool to compute Nielsen numbers for self-maps on infra-nilmanifolds. In this paper we generalize this result to morphisms between virtually polycyclic groups, which are known to act crystallographically by affine transformations on a nilpotent Lie …
It is shown that for any action of a finitely presented group $G$ on an $\R$-tree, there is a decomposition of $G$ as the fundamental group of a graph of groups related to this action. If the action of $G$ on $T$ is non-trivial, i.e. there is no global fixed point, then $G$ has a non-trivial action on a simplcial $\R $-tree.
We address the following natural extension problem for group actions: Given a group $G$, a subgroup $H\le G$, and an action of $H$ on a metric space, when is it possible to extend it to an action of the whole group $G$ on a (possibly different) metric space? When does such an extension preserve interesting properties of the original action of $H$? We begin by formalizing this problem and present a construction of an induced action which behaves well when $H$ is hyperbolically embedded in $G$. Moreover, we show that induced actions can be used to characterize hyperbolically embedded subgroups. …
In this short note, we study the bordism problem for group actions on the torus and give examples of groups acting on the torus by diffeomorphisms isotopic to the identity that cannot be extended to an action on a bounding 3-manifold. This solves a question raised in the previous work of the authors.
The set of equivalence classes of cobounded actions of a group on different hyperbolic metric spaces carries a natural partial order. The resulting poset thus gives rise to a notion of the "best" hyperbolic action of a group as the largest element of this poset, if such an element exists. We call such an action a largest hyperbolic action. While hyperbolic groups admit largest hyperbolic actions, we give evidence in this paper that this phenomenon is rare for non-hyperbolic groups. In particular, we prove that many families of groups of geometric origin do not have largest hyperbolic actions, …
Let $M$ be a simply connected closed $4$-manifold. It is proved that any (possibly finite) compact Lie group acting effectively and homologically trivially on $M$ by homeomorphisms is an abelian group of rank at most two. As applications, let $\mathrm{Aut}(F_{n})$ be the automorphism group of the free group of rank $n.$ We prove that any group action of $\mathrm{Aut}% (F_{n})$ $(n\geq 4)$ on $M\neq S^{4}$ by homologically trivial homeomorphisms factors through $\mathbb{Z}/2.$ Moreover, any action of $% \mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Q})$ $(n\geq 4)$ on $M\neq S^{4}$ by homeomorphisms is trivial.
