Let $A, B$, be finite subsets of an abelian group, and let $G \subset A \times B$ be such that $# A, # B, # \{a+b: (a,b) \in G \} \leq N$. We consider the question of estimating the quantity $# \{a-b: (a,b) \in G \}$. Recently Bourgain improved the trivial upper bound of $N^2$ to $N^{2-1/13}$, and applied this to the Kakeya conjecture. We improve Bourgain's estimate further to $N^{2-1/6}$, and obtain the further improvement of $N^{2-1/4}$ if we also know that $# \{a+2b: (a,b) \in G\} \leq N$. We conclude that Besicovitch sets in $\R^n$ have Hausdorff dimension at least 6n/11+5/11 and Minkowski dimension at least $4n/7 + 3/7$. This is new for $n > 8$.
A Kakeya set $S \subset (\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})^n$ is a set containing a line in each direction. We show that, when $N$ is any square-free integer, the size of the smallest Kakeya set in $(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})^n$ is at least $C_{n,ε} N^{n - ε}$ for any $ε$ -- resolving a special case of a conjecture of Hickman and Wright. Previously, such bounds were only known for the case of prime $N$. We also show that the case of general $N$ can be reduced to lower bounding the $\mathbb{F}_p$ rank of the incidence matrix of points and hyperplanes over $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$.
The arithmetic Kakeya conjecture, formulated by Katz and Tao in 2002, is a statement about addition of finite sets. It is known to imply a form of the Kakeya conjecture, namely that the upper Minkowski dimension of a Besicovitch set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is $n$. In this note we discuss this conjecture, giving a number of equivalent forms of it. We show that a natural finite field variant of it does hold. We also give some lower bounds.
In the finite field setting, we show that the restriction conjecture associated to any one of a large family of $d=2n+1$ dimensional quadratic surfaces implies the $n+1$ dimensional Kakeya conjecture (Dvir's theorem). This includes the case of the paraboloid over finite fields in which $-1$ \emph{is} a square. We are able to partially reverse this implication using the sharp Kakeya maximal operator estimates of Ellenberg, Oberlin and Tao to establish the first finite field restriction estimates beyond the Stein-Tomas exponent in this setting.
We prove the joints conjecture, showing that for any $N$ lines in ${\Bbb R}^3$, there are at most $O(N^{3 \over 2})$ points at which 3 lines intersect non-coplanarly. We also prove a conjecture of Bourgain showing that given $N^2$ lines in ${\Bbb R}^3$ so that no $N$ lines lie in the same plane and so that each line intersects a set $P$ of points in at least $N$ points then the cardinality of the set of points is $Ω(N^3)$. Both our proofs are adaptations of Dvir's argument for the finite field Kakeya problem.
We prove the discrete analogue of Kakeya conjecture over $\mathbb{R}^n$. This result suggests that a (hypothetically) low dimensional Kakeya set cannot be constructed directly from discrete configurations. We also prove a generalization which completely solves the discrete analogue of the Furstenberg set problem in all dimensions. The difference between our theorems and the (true) problems is only the (still difficult) issue of continuity since no transversality-at-incidences assumptions are imposed. The main tool of the proof is a theorem of Wongkew \cite{wongkew2003volumes} which states that…
We derive Maximal Kakeya estimates for functions over $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ proving the Maximal Kakeya conjecture for $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ for general $N$ as stated by Hickman and Wright [HW18]. The proof involves using polynomial method and linear algebra techniques from [Dha21, Ars21a, DD21] and generalizing a probabilistic method argument from [DD22]. As another application we give lower bounds for the size of $(m,ε)$-Kakeya sets over $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$. Using these ideas we also give a new, simpler, and direct proof for Maximal Kakeya bounds over finite fields (which were firs…
We give improved lower bounds on the size of Kakeya and Nikodym sets over $\mathbb{F}_q^3$. We also propose a natural conjecture on the minimum number of points in the union of a not-too-flat set of lines in $\mathbb{F}_q^3$, and show that this conjecture implies an optimal bound on the size of a Nikodym set.
Using the polynomial method of Dvir \cite{dvir}, we establish optimal estimates for Kakeya sets and Kakeya maximal functions associated to algebraic varieties $W$ over finite fields $F$. For instance, given an $n-1$-dimensional projective variety $W \subset ¶^n(F)$, we establish the Kakeya maximal estimate $$ \| \sup_{γ\ni w} \sum_{v \in γ(F)} |f(v)| \|_{\ell^n(W)} \leq C_{n,W,d} |F|^{(n-1)/n} \|f\|_{\ell^n(F^n)}$$ for all functions $f: F^n \to \R$ and $d \geq 1$, where for each $w \in W$, the supremum is over all irreducible algebraic curves in $F^n$ of degree at most $d$ that pass through $w…
We study Kakeya sets over local non-archimedean fields with a probabilistic point of view: we define a probability measure on the set of Kakeya sets as above and prove that, according to this measure, almost all non-archimedean Kakeya sets are neglectable according to the Haar measure. We also discuss possible relations with the non-archimedean Kakeya conjecture.
Let $L$ be a set of lines of an affine space over a field and let $S$ be a set of points with the property that every line of $L$ is incident with at least $N$ points of $S$. Let $D$ be the set of directions of the lines of $L$ considered as points of the projective space at infinity. We give a geometric construction of a set of lines $L$, where $D$ contains an $N^{n-1}$ grid and where $S$ has size $2((1/2)N)^n$, given a starting configuration in the plane. We provide examples of such starting configurations for the reals and for finite fields. Following Dvir's proof of the finite field Kakeya…
In this paper we give a proof of the Manickam-Miklós-Singhi (MMS) conjecture for some partial geometries. Specifically, we give a condition on partial geometries which implies that the MMS conjecture holds. Further, several specific partial geometries that are counter-examples to the conjecture are described.
Recently, Wang and Ma propose a conjecture associated with the possible generalization of Andrews-Warnaar identities. It is confirmed in this paper. As the applications of this conjecture, we prove that a family of series can be expressed by the partial theta functions and construct some new partial theta function identities.
Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-dual orientable genus polynomial and the partial-dual Euler genus polynomial. They showed that the partial-dual genus polynomial for an orientable ribbon graph is interpolating and gave an analogous conjecture: The partial-dual Euler-genus polynomial for any non-orientable ribbon graph is interpolating. In this paper, we first give some counterexamples to the conjecture. Then motivated by these counterexamples, we further find two infinite classes of counterexamples.
Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-dual orientable genus polynomial and the partial-dual Euler genus polynomial. They computed these two partial-dual genus polynomials of four families of ribbon graphs, posed some research problems and made some conjectures. In this paper, we introduce the notion of signed sequences of bouquets and obtain the partial-dual Euler genus polynomials for all ribbon graphs with the number of edges less than 4 and the partial-dual orientable genus polynomials for all orientable ribbon graphs with the number of edges less than 5 in terms of signed sequen…
We present an infinite family of Borwein type $+ - - $ conjectures. The expressions in the conjecture are related to multiple basic hypergeometric series with Macdonald polynomial argument.
In 1975 Stein conjectured that in every $n\times n$ array filled with the numbers $1, \dots, n$ with every number occuring exactly $n$ times, there is a partial transversal of size $n-1$. In this note we show that this conjecture is false by constructing such arrays without partial transverals of size $n-\frac{1}{42}\ln n$.
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and list chromatic number $χ_\ell(G)=χ_\ell$. Suppose that $0\leq t\leq χ_\ell$ and each vertex of $G$ is assigned a list of $t$ colors. Albertson, Grossman and Haas [1] conjectured that at least $\frac{tn}{χ_\ell}$ vertices of $G$ can be colored from these lists. In this paper we find some new results in partial list coloring which help us to show that the conjecture is true for at least half of the numbers of the set $\{1,2,...,χ_\ell(G)-1\}$. In addition we introduce a new related conjecture and finally we present some results about this conjectur…
Stein proposed the following conjecture: if the edge set of $K_{n,n}$ is partitioned into $n$ sets, each of size $n$, then there is a partial rainbow matching of size $n-1$. He proved that there is a partial rainbow matching of size $n(1-\frac{D_n}{n!})$, where $D_n$ is the number of derangements of $[n]$. This means that there is a partial rainbow matching of size about $(1- \frac{1}{e})n$. Using a topological version of Hall's theorem we improve this bound to $\frac{2}{3}n$.
In this paper we propose a conjecture concerning partial sums of an arbitrary finite subset of an abelian group, that naturally arises investigating simple Heffter systems. Then, we show its connection with related open problems and we present some results about the validity of these conjectures.
We study the existence of hamiltonian cycles in plane cubic graphs G having a facial 2-factor Q. Thus hamiltonicity in G is transformed into the existence of a (quasi) spanning tree of faces in the contraction G/Q. In particular, we study the case where G is the leapfrog extension (called vertex envelope in (Discrete Math., 309(14):4793-4809, 2009)) of a plane cubic graph G_0. As a consequence we prove hamiltonicity in the leapfrog extension of planar cubic cyclically 4-edge-connected bipartite graphs. This and other results of this paper establish partial solutions of Barnette's Conjecture ac…
In this expository note, we discuss an early partial coloring result of B. Kashin [C. R. Acad. Bulgare Sci., 1985]. Although this result only implies Spencer's six standard deviations [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 1985] up to a $\log\log n$ factor, Kashin's argument gives a simple proof of the existence of a constant discrepancy partial coloring in the setup of Komlós conjecture.
In 1980, Albertson and Berman introduced partial coloring. In 2000, Albertson, Grossman, and Haas introduced partial list coloring. Here, we initiate the study of partial coloring for an insightful generalization of list coloring introduced in 2015 by Dvořák and Postle, DP-coloring (or correspondence coloring). We consider the DP-coloring analogue of the Partial List Coloring Conjecture, which generalizes a natural bound for partial coloring. We show that while this partial DP-coloring conjecture does not hold, several results on partial list coloring can be extended to partial DP-coloring. We…
In his book \emph{Topics in Analytic Number Theory}, Hans Rademacher conjectured that the limits of certain sequences of coefficients that arise in the ordinary partial fraction decomposition of the generating function for partitions of integers into at most $N$ parts exist and equal particular values that he specified. Despite being open for nearly four decades, little progress has been made toward proving or disproving the conjecture, perhaps in part due to the difficulty in actually computing the coefficients in question. In this paper, we provide a fast algorithm for calculating the Radema…
Let G be an n-vertex graph with list-chromatic number $χ_\ell$. Suppose each vertex of G is assigned a list of t colors. Albertson, Grossman, and Haas conjecture that at least $t n / {χ_\ell}$ vertices can be colored from these lists. We prove a lower bound for the number of colorable vertices. As a corollary, we show that at least 6/7 of the conjectured number can be colored.
We consider the problem of extending partial edge colorings of cartesian products of graphs. More specifically, we suggest the following Evans-type conjecture: If $G$ is a graph where every precoloring of at most $k$ precolored edges can be extended to a proper $χ'(G)$-edge coloring, then every precoloring of at most $k+1$ edges of $G \square K_2$ is extendable to a proper $(χ'(G) +1)$-edge coloring of $G \square K_2$. In this paper we verify that this conjecture holds for trees, complete and complete bipartite graphs, as well as for graphs with small maximum degree. We also prove versions of …
Building on a recent characterization of tope graphs of Complexes of Oriented Matroids (COMs), we tackle and generalize several classical problems in Oriented Matroids (OMs), Lopsided Sets (aka ample set systems), and partial cubes via Metric Graph Theory. Our first main result is that every element of an OM from a class introduced by Mandel is incident to a simplicial tope, i.e, such OMs contain no mutation-free elements. This allows us to refute a conjecture of Mandel from 1983, that would have implied the famous Las Vergnas' simplex conjecture. Further, we show that the mutation graph of un…
A classical question in combinatorics is the following: given a partial latin square P, when can we complete P to a latin square L? In this paper, we will investigate the class of \leqε-dense partial latin squares: partial latin squares in which each symbol, row, and column contains \leqεn-many nonblank cells. A conjecture of Nash-Williams on triangulations of graphs led Daykin and Häggkvist to conjecture that all \leq(1/4)-dense partial latin squares are completable. In this paper, we will discuss the proof methods and results used in previous attempts to resolve this conjecture, introduce a …
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ with diameter $d$. Remoteness $ρ$ of $G$ is the maximum average distance from a vertex to all others and $\partial_1\geq\cdots\geq \partial_n$ are the distance eigenvalues of $G$. In \cite{AH}, Aouchiche and Hansen conjectured that $ρ+\partial_3>0$ when $d\geq 3$ and $ρ+\partial_{\lfloor\frac{7d}{8}\rfloor}>0.$ In this paper, we confirm these two conjectures. Furthermore, we give lower bounds on $\partial_n+ρ$ and $\partial_1-ρ$ when $G\ncong K_n$ and the extremal graphs are characterized.
Partial duality is a duality of ribbon graphs relative to a subset of their edges generalizing the classical Euler-Poincare duality. This operation often changes the genus. Recently J.L.Gross, T.Mansour, and T.W.Tucker formulated a conjecture that for any ribbon graph different from plane trees and their partial duals, there is a subset of edges partial duality relative to which does change the genus. A family of counterexamples was found by Qi Yan and Xian'an Jin. In this note we prove that essentially these are the only counterexamples.
A loop-augmented forest is a labeled rooted forest with loops on some of its roots. By exploiting an interplay between nilpotent partial functions and labeled rooted forests, we investigate the permutation action of the symmetric group on loop-augmented forests. Furthermore, we describe an extension of the Foulkes' conjecture and prove a special case. Among other important outcomes of our analysis are a complete description of the stabilizer subgroup of an idempotent in the semigroup of partial transformations and a generalization of the (Knuth-Sagan) hook length formula.
