Surgery, as developed by Browder, Kervaire, Milnor, Novikov, Sullivan, Wall and others is a method for comparing homotopy types of topological spaces with diffeomorphism or homeomorphism types of manifolds of dimension >= 5. In this paper, a modification of this theory is presented, where instead of fixing a homotopy type one considers a weaker information. Roughly speaking, one compares n-dimensional compact manifolds with topological spaces whose k-skeletons are fixed, where k is at least [n/2]. A particularly attractive example which illustrates the concept is given by complete intersections. By the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem, a complete intersection of complex dimension n has the same n-skeleton as CP^n and one can use the modified theory to obtain information about their diffeomorphism type although the homotopy classification is not known. The theory reduces this classification result to the determination of complete intersections in a certain bordism group. The restrictions are: If d = d_1 ... d_r is the total degree of a complete intersection X^n_{d_1,..., d_r} of complex dimension n, then the assumption is, that for all primes p with p(p-1) <= n+1, the total degree d is divisible by p^{[(2n+1)/(2p-1)]+1}.
Theorem A. Two complete intersections X^n_{d_1,.,d_r} and X^n_{d'_1,\ldots , d'_s} of complex dimension n>2 fulfilling the assumption above for the total degree are diffeomorphic if and only if the total degrees, the Pontrjagin classes and the Euler characteristics agree.
The A-B slice problem, a reformulation of the 4-dimensional topological surgery conjecture for free groups, is shown to admit a link-homotopy+ solution. The proof relies on geometric applications of the group-theoretic 2-Engel relation. Implications for the surgery conjecture are discussed.
We use surgery along 2-tori embedded in a union of two copies of a product of punctured 2-tori to produce a new collection of homotopy 4-spheres (4-manifolds homotopy equivalent to $S^4$ and hence homeomorphic to $S^4$ but possibly not diffeomorphic to $S^4$). It is still unknown if these new examples are in fact exotic.
We prove a geometric refinement of Alexander duality for certain 2-complexes, the so-called gropes, embedded into 4-space. This refinement can be roughly formulated as saying that 4-dimensional Alexander duality preserves the disjoint Dwyer filtration. In addition, we give new proofs and extended versions of two lemmas of Freedman and Lin which are of central importance in the A-B-slice problem, the main open problem in the classification theory of topological 4-manifolds. Our methods are group theoretical, rather than using Massey products and Milnor μ-invariants as in the original proofs.
The first author's geometric Hopf invariant of a stable map $F:Σ^{\infty}X \to Σ^{\infty}Y$ is a stable ${\mathbb Z}_2$-equivariant map $h(F):Σ^{\infty}X \to Σ^{\infty}(Y \wedge Y)$ constructed by an explicit difference construction applied to $(F \wedge F)Δ_X - Δ_Y F$. The stable ${\mathbb Z}_2$-equivariant homotopy class of $h(F)$ is the primary obstruction to desuspending $F$ up to homotopy. The explicit nature of the construction allows for a $π$-equivariant version of $h(F)$ in the case of a $π$-equivariant $F$, with $π$ a discrete group. In earlier joint work we applied the $π_1(N)$-equi…
Browder-Novikov-Sullivan-Wall surgery theory investigates the homotopy types of manifolds, using a combination of algebra and topology. It is the aim of these notes to provide an introduction to the more algebraic aspects of the theory (such as the Wall surgery obstruction groups), without losing sight of the geometric motivation.
Twists of contact structures in dimension 3 and higher are studied in this paper from a viewpoint of contact round surgery. Three kinds of new modifications of contact structures which are higher-dimensional generalizations of the $3$-dimensional Lutz twists are introduced. One of the operations makes a contact manifold overtwisted in any dimension. Another one makes it weakly symplectically non-fillable. And the other one makes it strongly symplectically non-fillable. In other words, they make the overtwisted disc, the bordered Legendrian open books, and the Giroux domains, respectively. The …
It is well-known that an n-dimensional Poincaré complex $X^n$, $n \ge 5$, has the homotopy type of a compact topological $n$-manifold if the total surgery obstruction $s(X^n)$ vanishes. The present paper discusses recent attempts to prove analogous result in dimension 4. We begin by reviewing the necessary algebraic and controlled surgery theory. Next, we discuss the key idea of Quinn's approach. Finally, we present some cases of special fundamental groups, due to the authors and to Yamasaki.
We answer a weaker version of the classification problem for the homotopy types of $(n-2)$-connected closed orientable $(2n-1)$-manifolds. Let $n\geq 6$ be an even integer, and $X$ be a $(n-2)$-connected finite orientable Poincaré $(2n-1)$-complex such that $H^{n-1}(X;\mathbb{Q})=0$ and $H^{n-1}(X;\mathbb{Z}_2)=0$. Then its loop space homotopy type is uniquely determined by the action of higher Bockstein operations on $H^{n-1}(X;\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for each odd prime $p$. A stronger result is obtained when localized at odd primes.
Given two compact n-dimensional manifolds in the smooth, piecewise linear or topological categories, basic results of B. Mazur and others give simple criteria for determining whether their products with Euclidean spaces of sufficiently large dimension are isomorphic in the given category. This paper studies such questions when the dimensions of the Euclidean space do not satisfy such a condition, mainly for topological manifolds homotopy equivalent to lens spaces with odd prime order fundamental groups. In particular, complete information is obtained for homotopy lens spaces in most dimensions…
Two 4-manifolds are stably diffeomorphic if they become diffeomorphic after connected sum with S^2 x S^2's. This paper shows that two closed, orientable, homotopy equivalent, smooth 4-manifolds are stably diffeomorphic, provided a certain map from the second homology of the fundamental group with coefficients in Z/2 to the L-theory of the group is injective. This injectivity is implied by the Borel/Novikov conjecture for torsion-free groups, which is known for many groups. There are also results concerning the homotopy invariance of the Kirby-Siebenmann invariant. The method of proof is to use…
This paper proves a theorem about Dehn surgery using a new theorem about PSL(2, C) character varieties. Confirming a conjecture of Boyer and Zhang, this paper shows that a small hyperbolic knot in a homotopy sphere having a non-trivial cyclic slope r has an incompressible surface with non-integer boundary slope strictly between r-1 and r+1. A corollary is that any small knot which has only integer boundary slopes has Property P. The proof uses connections between the topology of the complement of the knot, M, and the PSL(2, C) character variety of M that were discovered by Culler and Shalen. T…
In this note, we fill in a gap in the literature by proving that the Teichmueller modular groups (mapping class groups) are not Poincare duality groups and the complexes of curves of surfaces have infinite homotopy type (i.e. are not homotopy equivalent to a finite CW-complex).
Following Bryant, Ferry, Mio and Weinberger we construct generalized manifolds as limits of controlled sequences p_i: X_i --> X_{i-1} : i = 1,2,... of controlled Poincaré spaces. The basic ingredient is the epsilon-delta-surgery sequence recently proved by Pedersen, Quinn and Ranicki. Since one has to apply it not only in cases when the target is a manifold, but a controlled Poincaré complex, we explain this issue very roughly. Specifically, it is applied in the inductive step to construct the desired controlled homotopy equivalence p_{i+1}: X_{i+1} --> X_i. Our main theorem requires a suffici…
The total surgery obstruction of a finite n-dimensional Poincare complex X is an element s(X) of a certain abelian group S_n (X) with the property that for n >= 5 we have s(X) = 0 if and only if X is homotopy equivalent to a closed n-dimensional topological manifold. The definitions of S_n (X) and s(X) and the property are due to Ranicki in a combination of results of two books and several papers. In this paper we present these definitions and a detailed proof of the main result so that they are in one place and we also add some of the details not explicitly written down in the original source…
This paper is an introduction to the use of the cobordism of chain complexes with Poincaré duality in surgery theory. It is a companion to the author's paper "An introduction to algebraic surgery" math.AT/0008071 (to appear in Volume 2 of Surveys in Surgery Theory, Ann. of Maths. Studies, Princeton, 2001) which is an introduction to algebraic surgery using forms and formations.
For a closed topological $n$--manifold $K$ and a map $p:K\to B$ inducing an isomorphism $π_1(K)\toπ_1(B)$, there is a canonicaly defined morphism $b:H_{n+1}(B,K,\mathbb{L})\to \mathbb{S} (K)$, where $\mathbb{L}$ is the periodic simply-connected surgery spectrum and $\mathbb{S} (K)$ is the topological structure set. We construct a refinement $a:H_{n+1}^{+}(B,K,\mathbb{L} )\to \mathbb{S}_{\varepsilon ,δ}(K)$ in the case when $p$ is $UV^1$, and we show that $a$ is bijective if $B$ is a finite-dimensional compact metric ANR. Here, $H_{n+1}^{+}(B,K,\mathbb{L} )\subset H_{n+1}(B,K,\mathbb{L} )$, and…
The object of this paper is to show that non-homotopy finite Poincaré duality spaces are plentiful. Let $π$ be finitely presented group. Assuming that the reduced Grothendieck group $\tilde K_0(\Bbb Z[π])$ has a non-trivial 2-divisible element, we construct a finitely dominated Poincaré space $X$ with fundamental group $π$ such that $X$ is not homotopy finite. The dimension of $X$ can be made arbitrarily large. Our proof relies on a result which says that every finitely dominated space possesses a stable Poincaré duality thickening.
We construct periodic families of Poincare complexes, partially solving a question of Hodgson that was posed in the proceedings of the 1982 Northwestern homotopy theory conference. We also construct infinite families of Poincare complexes whose top cell falls off after one suspension but which fail to embed in a sphere of codimension one. We give a homotopy theoretic description of the four-fold periodicity in knot cobordism.
We determine loop space decompositions of simply-connected four-manifolds, $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-dimensional manifolds provided $n\notin\{4,8\}$, and connected sums of products of two spheres. These are obtained as special cases of a more general loop space decomposition of certain torsion-free $CW$-complexes with well-behaved skeleta and some Poincaré duality features.
We prove that the full twist is a Serre functor in the homotopy category of type A Soergel bimodules. As a consequence, we relate the top and bottom Hochschild degrees in Khovanov-Rozansky homology, categorifying a theorem of Kálmán.
For a Poincare duality space X and a map X -> B, consider the homotopy fiber product X x^B X. If X is orientable with respect to a multiplicative cohomology theory E, then, after suitably regrading, it is shown that the E-homology of X x^B X has the structure of a graded associative algebra. When X -> B is the diagonal map of a manifold X, one recovers a result of Chas and Sullivan about the homology of the free loop space LX.
