Topological Rigidity Problems

We survey the recent results and current issues on the topological rigidity problem for closed aspherical manifolds, i.e., connected closed manifolds whose universal coverings are contractible. A number of open problems and conjectures are presented during the course of the discussion. We also review the status and applications of the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for algebraic $K$-and $L$-theory for a group ring $RG$ and coefficients in an additive category. K- and L-theory of group rings

This article will explore the K- and L-theory of group rings and their applications to algebra, geometry and topology. The Farrell-Jones Conjecture characterizes K- and L-theory groups. It has many implications, including the Borel and Novikov Conjectures for topological rigidity. Its current status, and many of its consequences are surveyed.

Surgery On Foliations

In this paper, we set up two surgery theories and two kinds of Whitehead torsion for foliations. First, we construct a bounded surgery theory and bounded Whitehead torsion for foliations, which correspond to the Connes' foliation algebra in the K-theory of operator algebras, in the sense that there is an analogy between surgery theory and index theory, and a Novikov Conjecture for bounded surgery on foliations in analogy with the foliated Novikov conjecture of P.Baum and A.Connes in operator theory. Surgery and duality

Surgery, as developed by Browder, Kervaire, Milnor, Novikov, Sullivan, Wall and others is a method for comparing homotopy types of topological spaces with diffeomorphism or homeomorphism types of manifolds of dimension >= 5. In this paper, a modification of this theory is presented, where instead of fixing a homotopy type one considers a weaker information. Topological Rigidity for FJ by the Infinite Cyclic Group

We call a group FJ if it satisfies the $K$- and $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture with coefficients in $\mathbb Z$. We show that if $G$ is FJ, then the simple Borel conjecture (in dimensions $\ge 5$) holds for every group of the form $G\rtimes\mathbb Z$. If in addition $Wh(G\times \mathbb Z)=0$, which is true for all known torsion free FJ groups, then the bordism Borel conjecture (in dimensions $n\ge 5$) holds for $G\rtimes\mathbb Z$.
