We prove the genus zero part of the generalized Witten conjecture relating moduli spaces of spin curves to Gelfand-Dickey hierarchies. That is, we show that intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable r-spin curves assemble into a generating function which yields a solution of the semiclassical limit of the KdV_r equations. We formulate axioms for a cohomology class on this moduli space which allow one to construct a cohomological field theory of rank $r-1$ in all genera.
In genus zero it produces a Frobenius manifold which is isomorphic to the Frobenius manifold structure on the base of the versal deformation of the A_{r-1} singularity. We prove analogs of the puncture, dilaton, and topological recursion relations by drawing an analogy with the construction of Gromov-Witten invariants and quantum cohomology.
Various equivariant intersection numbers on Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane are computed, some of which are organized into tau-functions of 2-Toda hierarchies. A correspondence between the equivariant intersection on Hilbert schemes and stationary Gromov-Witten theory is established.
We show that the generating series of some Hodge integrals involving one or two partitions are tau-functions of the KP hierarchy or the 2-Toda hierarchy respectively. We also formulate a conjecture on the connection between relative invariants and integrable hierarchies. The conjecture is verified in some examples.
We prove that the genus-0 invariants in K-theoretic Gromov--Witten theory are governed by an integrable hierarchy of hydrodynamic type. If the K-theoretic quantum product is semisimple, then we also prove the completeness of the hierarchy.
We outline two approaches to the construction of integrable hierarchies associated with the theory of Gromov - Witten invariants of smooth projective varieties. We argue that a comparison of these two approaches yields nontrivial constraints on Chern numbers of varieties with semisimple quantum cohomology.
A simple construction of Whitham type hierarchies in all genera is suggested. Potentials of these hierarchies are written as integrals of hypergeometric type. Possible generalization for universal moduli space is also briefly discussed.
We obtain variational formulas for holomorphic objects on Riemann surfaces with respect to arbitrary local coordinates on the moduli space of complex structures. These formulas are written in terms of a canonical object on the moduli space which corresponds to the pairing between the space of quadratic differentials and the tangent space to the moduli space. This canonical object satisfies certain commutation relations which appear to be the same as the ones that emerged in the integrability theory of Whitham type hierarchies. Driven by this observation, we develop the theory of Whitham type h…
We introduce integrable KdV type hierarchy associated naturally with arbitrary semi-simple Frobenius manifold. We present hierarchy in a Lax form and show that it admits bihamiltonian description.
We study the geometry of D-bundles--locally projective D-modules--on algebraic curves, and apply them to the study of integrable hierarchies, specifically the multicomponent Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) and spin Calogero-Moser (CM) hierarchies. We show that KP hierarchies have a geometric description as flows on moduli spaces of D-bundles; in particular, we prove that the local structure of D-bundles is captured by the full Sato Grassmannian. The rational, trigonometric, and elliptic solutions of KP are therefore captured by D-bundles on cubic curves E, that is, irreducible (smooth, nodal, or c…
It this paper we present a new construction of a hamiltonian hierarchy associated to a cohomological field theory. We conjecture that in the semisimple case our hierarchy is related to the Dubrovin-Zhang hierarchy by a Miura transformation and check it in several examples.
For an arbitrary semisimple Frobenius manifold we construct Hodge integrable hierarchy of Hamiltonian partial differential equations. In the particular case of quantum cohomology the tau-function of a solution to the hierarchy generates the intersection numbers of the Gromov--Witten classes and their descendents along with the characteristic classes of Hodge bundles on the moduli spaces of stable maps. For the one-dimensional Frobenius manifold the Hodge hierarchy is a deformation of the Korteweg--de Vries hierarchy depending on an infinite number of parameters. Conjecturally this hierarchy is…
We prove that the total descendant potential functions of the theory of Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten for D_4 with symmetry group <J> and D_4^T with symmetry group G_{max}, respectively, are both tau-functions of the D_4 Kac-Wakimoto/Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy. This completes the proof, begun in [FJR], of the Witten Integrable Hierarchies Conjecture for all simple (ADE) singularities.
We introduce primitive forms with or without higher residue structure and explore their connection with the flat structures with or without a metric and integrable hierarchies of KdV type. Just as the classical case of primitive forms with metric arXiv:1311.1659, the primitive forms without metrics are constructed as the positive part of the Birkhoff decomposition of formal oscillatory integrals with respect to the descendent variable. The oscilating integrals of a primitive form without metric give rise to a hierarchy of commuting PDE of the KdV type as in the case of primitive forms with met…
We show that reductions of KP hierarchies related to the loop algebra of $SL_n$ with homogeneous gradation give solutions of the Darboux-Egoroff system of PDE's. Using explicit dressing matrices of the Riemann-Hilbert problem generalized to include a set of commuting additional symmetries, we construct solutions of the Witten--Dijkgraaf--E. Verlinde--H. Verlinde equations.
We define the double ramification hierarchy associated to an F-cohomological field theory and use this construction to prove that the principal hierarchy of any semisimple (homogeneous) flat F-manifold possesses a (homogeneous) integrable dispersive deformation at all orders in the dispersion parameter. The proof is based on the reconstruction of an F-CohFT starting from a semisimple flat F-manifold and additional data in genus $1$, obtained in our previous work. Our construction of these dispersive deformations is quite explicit and we compute several examples. In particular, we provide a com…
We propose a new construction of an integrable hierarchy associated to any infinite series of Frobenius manifolds satisfying a certain stabilization condition. We study these hierarchies for Frobenius manifolds associated to $A_N$, $D_N$ and $B_N$ singularities. In the case of $A_N$ Frobenius manifolds our hierarchy turns out to coincide with the KP hierarchy; for $B_N$ Frobenius manifolds it coincides with the BKP hierarchy; and for $D_N$ hierarchy it is a certain reduction of the 2-component BKP hierarchy. As a side product to these results we illustrate the enumerative meaning of certain co…
We consider the population of critical points generated from the trivial critical point of the master function with no variables and associated with the trivial representation of the affine Lie algebra $\hat{\frak{sl}}_N$. We show that the critical points of this population define rational solutions of the equations of the mKdV hierarchy associated with $\hat{\frak{sl}}_N$. We also construct critical points from suitable $N$-tuples of tau-functions. The construction is based on a Wronskian identity for tau-functions. In particular, we construct critical points from suitable $N$-tuples of Schur…
We investigate blowup formulae in Donaldson-Witten theory with gauge group SU(N), using the theory of hyperelliptic Kleinian functions. We find that the blowup function is a hyperelliptic sigma-function and we describe an explicit procedure to expand it in terms of the Casimirs of the gauge group up to arbitrary order. As a corollary, we obtain a new expression for the contact terms and we show that the correlation functions involving the exceptional divisor are governed by the KdV hierarchy. We also show that, for manifolds of simple type, the blowup function becomes a tau-function for a mult…
In this paper we study various aspects of the double ramification (DR) hierarchy, introduced by the first author, and its quantization. We extend the notion of tau-symmetry to quantum integrable hierarchies and prove that the quantum DR hierarchy enjoys this property. We determine explicitly the genus $1$ quantum correction and, as an application, compute completely the quantization of the $3$- and $4$-KdV hierarchies (the DR hierarchies for Witten's $3$- and $4$-spin theories). We then focus on the recursion relation satisfied by the DR Hamiltonian densities and, abstracting from its geometri…
The $u$-plane integrals of topologically twisted $N = 2$ supersymmetric gauge theories generally contain contact terms of nonlocal topological observables. This paper proposes an interpretation of these contact terms from the point of view of integrable hierarchies and their Whitham deformations. This is inspired by Mariño and Moore's remark that the blowup formula of the $u$-plane integral contains a piece that can be interpreted as a single-time tau function of an integrable hierarchy. This single-time tau function can be extended to a multi-time version without spoiling the modular invarian…
The paper math.AG/0108100 gives a construction of the total descendent potential corresponding to a semisimple Frobenius manifold. In math.AG/0209205, it is proved that the total descendent potential corresponding to K. Saito's Frobenius structure on the parameter space of the miniversal deformation of the A_{n-1}-singularity satisfies the modulo-n reduction of the KP-hierarchy. In this paper, we identify the hierarchy satisfied by the total descendent potential of a simple singularity of the A,D,E-type. Our description of the hierarchy is parallel to the vertex operator construction of Kac --…
We consider the theory of Lax equations in complex simple and reductive classical Lie algebras with the spectral parameter on a Riemann surface of finite genus. Our approach is based on the new objects -- the Lax operator algebras, and develops the approach of I.Krichever treating the $\gl(n)$ case. For every Lax operator considered as the mapping sending a point of the cotangent bundle on the space of extended Tyrin data to an element of the corresponding Lax operator algebra we construct the hierarchy of mutually commuting flows given by Lax equations and prove that those are Hamiltonian wit…
