A scale of the Frechet spaces of exponential type entire functions of one complex variable is considered. Certain special properties of subsets of these spaces consisting of Laguerre entire functions, which are obtained as uniform limits on compact subsets of the complex plane of polynomials with real nonpositive zeros only, are described. A class of infinite order differential operators which act between these Frechet spaces is inrtoduced and studied. In particular, it is shown that this class preserves the set of Laguerre entire functions. The results obtained are then used to obtain and to study the solutions of a certain initial value problem.
In this paper, we discuss the conditions for the function $F_a(z) = \sum_{k=0}^\infty \frac{z^k}{(a+1)(a^2+1) \ldots (a^k+1)}, a>1,$ to belong to the Laguerre-Pólya class, or to have only real zeros.
For an entire function $f(z) = \sum_{k=0}^\infty a_k z^k, a_k>0,$ we show that if $f$ belongs to the Laguerre-Pólya class, and the quotients $q_k := \frac{a_{k-1}^2}{a_{k-2}a_k}, k=2, 3, \ldots $ satisfy the condition $q_2 \leq q_3,$ then $f$ has at least one zero in the segment $[-\frac{a_1}{a_2},0].$ We also give necessary conditions and sufficient conditions of the existence of such a zero in terms of the quotients $q_k$ for $k=2,3, 4.$
We prove that if $f(x) = \sum_{k=0}^\infty a_k x^k,$ $a_k >0, $ is an entire function such that the sequence $Q := \left( \frac{a_k^2}{a_{k-1}a_{k+1}} \right)_{k=1}^\infty$ is non-decreasing and $\frac{a_1^2}{a_{0}a_{2}} \geq 2\sqrt[3]{2},$ then all but a finite number of zeros of $f$ are real and simple. We also present a criterion in terms of the closest to zero roots for such a function to have only real zeros (in other words, for belonging to the Laguerre--Pólya class of type I) under additional assumption on the sequence $Q.$
For an entire function $f(z) = \sum_{k=0}^\infty a_k z^k, a_k>0,$ we show that $f$ does not belong to the Laguerre-Pólya class if the quotients $\frac{a_{n-1}^2}{a_{n-2}a_n}$ are increasing in $n$, and $c:= \lim\limits_{n\to \infty} \frac{a_{n-1}^2}{a_{n-2}a_n}$ is smaller than an absolute constant $q_\infty$ $(q_\infty\approx 3{.}2336) .$
We find the intervals $[α, β(α)]$ such that if a univariate real polynomial or entire function $f(z) = a_0 + a_1 z + a_2 z^2 + \cdots $ with positive coefficients satisfy the conditions $ \frac{a_{k-1}^2}{a_{k-2}a_{k}} \in [α, β(α)]$ for all $k \geq 2,$ then $f$ belongs to the Laguerre--Pólya class. For instance, from J.I.~Hutchinson's theorem, one can observe that $f$ belongs to the Laguerre--Pólya class (has only real zeros) when $q_k(f) \in [4, + \infty).$ We are interested in finding those intervals which are not subsets of $[4, + \infty).$
We study the entire functions $f(z) = \sum_{k=0}^\infty a_k z^k, a_k>0,$ with non-monotonic second quotients of Taylor coefficients, namely, such that $\frac{a_{2m-1}^2}{a_{2m-2}a_{2m}} = a>1$ and $\frac{a_{2m}^2}{a_{2m-1}a_{2m+1}} = b>1$ for all $m \in \mathbb{N}.$ We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions under which such functions belong to the Laguerre-Pólya I class.
We prove that the signs of the Maclaurin coefficients of a wide class of entire functions that belong to the Laguerre-Pólya class posses a regular behaviour.
Let $f(z)=e^{-bz^2}f_1(z)$ where $b \geq 0$ and $f_1(z)$ is a real entire function of genus 0 or 1. We give a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of a sequence of inequalities for all of the zeros of $f(z)$ to be real. These inequalities are an extension of the classical Laguerre inequalities.
We study infinite order differential operators acting in the spaces of exponential type entire functions. We derive conditions under which such operators preserve the set of Laguerre entire functions which consists of the polynomials possessing real nonpositive zeros only and of their uniform limits on compact subsets of the complex plane. We obtain integral representations of some particular cases of these operators and apply these results to obtain explicit solutions to some Cauchy problems for diffusion equations with nonconstant drift term.
For an entire function $f(z) = \sum_{k=0}^\infty a_k z^k,$ $a_k >0,$ we define the sequence of the second quotients of Taylor coefficients $Q := \left( \frac{a_k^2}{a_{k-1}a_{k+1}} \right)_{k=1}^\infty$. We find new necessary conditions for a function with a non-decreasing sequence $Q$ to belong to the Laguerre--Pólya class of type I. We also estimate the possible number of nonreal zeros for a function with a non-decreasing sequence $Q.$
If f is a real entire function and ff" has only real zeros then f belongs to the Laguerre-Polya class, the closure of the set of real polynomials with real zeros. This result completes a long line of development originating from a conjecture of Wiman in 1914.
The concept of stability, originally introduced for polynomials, will be extended to apply to the class of entire functions. This generalization will be called Hurwitz stablility and the class of Hurwitz stable functions will serve as the main focus of this paper. A first theorem will show how, given a function of either of the Stieltjes classes, a Hurwitz stable function might be constructed. A second approach to constructing Hurwitz stable functions, based on using additional functions from the Laguerre-Pólya class, will be presented in a second theorem.
Laguerre's theorem regarding the number of non-real zeros of a polynomial and its image under certain linear operators is generalized. This generalization is then used to (1) exhibit a number of previously undiscovered complex zero decreasing sequences for the Chebyshev, Legendre, and generalized Laguerre polynomial bases and (2) simultaneously generate a basis $B$ and a corresponding $B$-CZDS. Some extensions to transcendental entire functions in the Laguerre-Polya class are given which, in turn, give a new and short proof of a previously known result due to one of the authors. The paper conc…
This paper describes a part of the factorization theory of the family of all the entire functions with non vanishing derivatives. In particular it proves that this family of mappings contains primes. This assures that this family of entire functions has two non degenerate fractal representations.
We show that, if the Julia set of a transcendental entire function is locally connected, then it takes the form of a spider's web in the sense defined by Rippon and Stallard. In the opposite direction, we prove that a spider's web Julia set is always locally connected at a dense subset of buried points. We also show that the set of buried points (the residual Julia set) can be a spider's web.

Let $g$ be a entire function of exponential type on the complex plane $\mathbb C$, $Z=\{ z_k\}_{k=1,2,\dots}$ be a sequence of points in $\mathbb C$. We give a criterion for the existence of an entire function $f\neq 0$ of exponential type that vanishes on $ Z$ and satisfies the constraint $\ln |f(iy)|\leq \ln |g(iy)|+o(|y|)$, $y\to \pm\infty$. Our results generalize and develop a joint results of P. Malliavin and L. A. Rubel. Applications to multipliers for entire functions of exponential type, to analytic functionals and their convolutions on the complex plane, as well as to the completeness…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the distribution of zeros of entire functions which can be represented as the Fourier transforms of certain admissible kernels. The principal results bring to light the intimate connection between the Bochner-Khinchin-Mathias theory of positive definite kernels and the generalized real Laguerre inequalities. The concavity and convexity properties of the Jacobi theta function play a prominent role throughout this work. The paper concludes with several questions and open problems.
We introduce a new class of entire functions $\mathcal{E}$ which consists of all $F_0\in\mathcal{O}(\mathbb{C})$ for which there exists a sequence $(F_n)\in \mathcal{O}(\mathbb{C})$ and a sequence $(λ_n)\in\mathbb{C}$ satisfying $F_n(z)=λ_{n+1}e^{F_{n+1}(z)}$ for all $n\geq 0$. This new class is closed under the composition and its is dense in the space of all non-vanishing entire functions. We prove that every closed set $V\subset \mathbb{C}$ containing the origin and at least one more point is the set of singular values of some locally univalent function in $\mathcal{E}$, hence this new clas…
In this article we address the following question, whose interest was recently renewed by problems arising in arithmetic dynamics: under which conditions does there exist a local biholomorphism between the Julia sets of two given one-dimensional rational maps? In particular we find criteria ensuring that such a local isomorphism is induced by an algebraic correspondence. This extends and unifies classical results due to Baker, Beardon, Eremenko, Levin, Przytycki and others. The proof involves entire curves and positive currents.
Let f be a transcendental entire function that omits a complex value a. We show that for every simply connected region D that does not contain a the full preimage of D is disconnected. We conjecture that the same holds if one only assumes that a is omitted locally. We were able to prove this conjecture under the additional assumption that f is of finite order. We include some auxilliary results on the singularities of the inverses of entire functions which are of independent interest.
We study non-trivial translation-invariant probability measures on the space of entire functions of one complex variable. The existence (and even an abundance) of such measures was proven by Benjamin Weiss. Answering Weiss question, we find a relatively sharp lower bound for the growth of entire functions in the support of such measures. The proof of this result consists of two independent parts: the proof of the lower bound and the construction, which yields its sharpness. Each of these parts combines various tools (both classical and new) from the theory of entire and subharmonic functions a…
This paper presents the Gaussian subordination framework to generate optimal one-sided approximations to multidimensional real-valued functions by functions of prescribed exponential type. Such extremal problems date back to the works of Beurling and Selberg and provide a variety of applications in analysis and analytic number theory. Here we majorize and minorize (on $\mathbb{R}^N$) the Gaussian ${\bf x} \mapsto e^{-πλ|{\bf x}|^2}$, where $λ>0$ is a free parameter, by functions with distributional Fourier transforms supported on Euclidean balls, optimizing weighted $L^1$-errors. By integratin…
