This paper presents the Gaussian subordination framework to generate optimal one-sided approximations to multidimensional real-valued functions by functions of prescribed exponential type. Such extremal problems date back to the works of Beurling and Selberg and provide a variety of applications in analysis and analytic number theory. Here we majorize and minorize (on $\mathbb{R}^N$) the Gaussian ${\bf x} \mapsto e^{-πλ|{\bf x}|^2}$, where $λ>0$ is a free parameter, by functions with distributional Fourier transforms supported on Euclidean balls, optimizing weighted $L^1$-errors. By integrating the parameter $λ$ against suitable measures, we solve the analogous problem for a wide class of radial functions. Applications to inequalities and periodic analogues are discussed. The constructions presented here rely on the theory of de Branges spaces of entire functions and on new interpolations tools derived from the theory of Laplace transforms of Laguerre-Pólya functions.
In this work we obtain optimal majorants and minorants of exponential type for a wide class of radial functions on $\mathbb{R}^N$. These extremal functions minimize the $L^1(\mathbb{R}^N, |x|^{2ν+ 2 - N}dx)$-distance to the original function, where $ν>-1$ is a free parameter. To achieve this result we develop new interpolation tools to solve an associated extremal problem for the exponential function $\mathcal{F}_λ(x) = e^{-λ|x|}$, where $λ>0$, in the general framework of de Branges spaces of entire functions. We then specialize the construction to a particular family of homogeneous de Branges…
In this paper we find extremal one-sided approximations of exponential type for a class of truncated and odd functions with a certain exponential subordination. These approximations optimize the $L^1(\mathbb{R}, |E(x)|^{-2}dx)$-error, where $E$ is an arbitrary Hermite-Biehler entire function of bounded type in the upper half-plane. This extends the work of Holt and Vaaler [Duke Math. Journal 83 (1996), 203-247] for the signum function. We also provide periodic analogues of these results, finding optimal one-sided approximations by trigonometric polynomials of a given degree to a class of perio…
We determine the optimal majorant $M^+$ and minorant $M^-$ of exponential type for the truncation of $x\mapsto (x^2+a^2)^{-1}$ with respect to general de Branges measures. We prove that \[ \int_\mathbb{R} (M^+ - M^-) |E(x)|^{-2}dx = \frac{1}{a^2 K(0,0)} \] where $K$ is the reproducing kernel for $\mathcal{H}(E)$. As an application we determine the optimal majorant and minorant for the Heaviside function that vanish at a fixed point $α= ia$ on the imaginary axis. We show that the difference of majorant and minorant has integral value $(πa - \tanh(πa))^{-1} πa$.
A new proof is given for the fact that centered gaussian functions saturate the Euclidean forward-reverse Brascamp-Lieb inequalities, extending the Brascamp-Lieb and Barthe theorems. A duality principle for best constants is also developed, which generalizes the fact that the best constants in the Brascamp-Lieb and Barthe inequalities are equal. Finally, as the title hints, the main results concerning finiteness, structure and gaussian-extremizability for the Brascamp-Lieb inequality due to Bennett, Carbery, Christ and Tao are generalized to the setting of the forward-reverse Brascamp-Lieb ine…
We prove the existence of functions that extremize the endpoint $L^2$ to $L^4$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the one-sheeted hyperboloid in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^4$ and that, taking symmetries into consideration, any extremizing sequence has a subsequence that converges to an extremizer.
In Carnot groups of step 2 we consider sets having maximal or minimal possible homogeneous Hausdorff dimension compared to their Euclidean one: in the first case we prove that they must be in a sense vertical, that is a large part of these sets can lie off horizontal planes through their points, and in the latter case close to horizontal. The examples that had been used to prove the sharpness of the sub-Riemannian versus Euclidean dimension comparison intuitively satisfied these geometric properties, which we here quantify and prove to be necessary. We also show the sharpness of our statements…
In this paper, we establish the existence of extremals for two kinds of Stein-Weiss inequalities on the Heisenberg group. More precisely, we prove the existence of extremals for the Stein-Weiss inequalities with full weights in Theorem 1.1 and the Stein-Weiss inequalities with horizontal weights in Theorem 1.4. Different from the proof of the analogous inequality in Euclidean spaces given by Lieb [26] using Riesz rearrangement inequality which is not available on the Heisenberg group, we employ the concentration compactness principle to obtain the existence of the maximizers on the Heisenberg …
We study the following question: Given an open set $Ω$, symmetric about 0, and a continuous, integrable, positive definite function $f$, supported in $Ω$ and with $f(0)=1$, how large can $\int f$ be? This problem has been studied so far mostly for convex domains $Ω$ in Euclidean space. In this paper we study the question in arbitrary locally compact abelian groups and for more general domains. Our emphasis is on finite groups as well as Euclidean spaces and $\ZZ^d$. We exhibit upper bounds for $\int f$ assuming geometric properties of $Ω$ of two types: (a) packing properties of $Ω$ and (b) spe…
We consider the minimum energy problem on the unit sphere $\mathbb S^{d-1}$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d$, $d\geq 3$, in the presence of an external field $Q$, where the charges are assumed to interact according to Newtonian potential $1/r^{d-2}$, with $r$ denoting the Euclidean distance. We solve the problem by finding the support of the extremal measure, and obtaining an explicit expression for the density of the extremal measure. We then apply our results to an external field generated by a point charge of positive magnitude, placed at the North Pole of the sphere, and to a quadratic…
We consider the minimum Riesz $s$-energy problem on the unit disk $\mathbb D:=\{(x_1,\ldots,x_d)\in\mathbb R^d: x_1=0, x_2^2+x_3^2+\ldots+x_d^2\leq 1\}$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d$, $d\geq 3$, immersed into a smooth rotationally invariant external field $Q$. The charges are assumed to interact via the Riesz potential $1/r^s$, with $d-3 < s < d-1$, where $r$ denotes the Euclidean distance. We solve the problem by finding an explicit expression for the extremal measure. We then consider applications to a monomial external field and an external field generated by a positive point charge,…
We study Fuglede's $p$-module of systems of measures in condensers in Euclidean spaces and on polarizable Carnot groups. We apply and generalize a result by Rodin, which provides an explicit method for finding the extremal function and the 2-module of a foliated family of curves in $\mathbb R^2$, to a variety of settings. In the planar case, we apply Rodin's method to obtain estimates for the conformal module of a parallelogram and of a ring domain using directional dilatations. In $\mathbb R^n,$ we identify the extremal function and compute the $p$-module of images of families of connecting c…

We study resonant billiard trajectories within quadrics in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. We relate them to the theory of approximation, in particular the extremal rational functions on the systems of $d$ intervals on the real line. This fruitful link enables us to prove fundamental properties of the billiard dynamics and to provide a comprehensive study of a large class of non-periodic trajectories of integrable billiards. A key ingredient is a functional-polynomial relation of a generalized Pell type. Applying further these ideas and techniques to $s$-weak billiard trajectories, we com…
We consider the minimal energy problem on the unit sphere $\mathbb S^2$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^3$ immersed in an external field $Q$, where the charges are assumed to interact via Newtonian potential $1/r$, $r$ being the Euclidean distance. The problem is solved by finding the support of the extremal measure, and obtaining an explicit expression for the equilibrium density. We then apply our results to the external field generated by a point charge, and a quadratic external field.
We construct majorants and minorants of a Gaussian function in Euclidean space that have Fourier transforms supported in a box. The majorants that we construct are shown to be extremal and our minorants are shown to be asymptotically extremal as the sides of the box become uniformly large. We then adapt the Distribution and Gaussian Subordination methods of Carneiro-Littmann-Vaaler to the multidimensional setting to obtain majorants and minorants for a class of radial functions. Periodic analogues of the main results are proven and applications to Hilbert-type inequalities are given.
Let G be a locally compact Abelian group, and let X, Y be two open sets in G. We investigate the extremal constant C(X,Y) defined to be the supremum of integrals of functions f from the class F(X,Y), where F(X,Y) is the family of positive definite functions f on G such that f(0) = 1, the positive part of f is supported in X, and its negative part is supported in Y. In the case when X=Y, the problem is exactly the so-called Turán problem for the set X. When Y= G, i.e., there is a restriction only on the set of positivity of f, we obtain the Delsarte problem. The Delsarte problem is the sharpest…
This paper studies functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) on metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure. The main result gives characterizations for mappings that preserve BMO. This extends the corresponding Euclidean results by Gotoh to metric measure spaces. The argument is based on a generalizations Uchiyama's construction of certain extremal BMO-functions and John-Nirenberg's lemma.
