Suppose there are two framed links in a compact, connected 3-manifold (possibly with boundary, or non-orientable) such that the associated 3-manifolds obtained by surgery are homeomorphic (relative to their common boundary, if there is one.) How are the links related? Kirby's theorem gives the answer when the manifold is S^3, and Fenn and Rourke extended it to the case of any closed orientable 3-manifold, or twisted S^1 cross S^2. The purpose of this note is to give the answer in the general case, using only minor modifications of Kirby's original proof.
We recall an extension of Kirby's Calculus on non-simply connected 3-manifolds given in [FR], and the surgery calculus of bridged links from [Ke], which involves only local moves. We give a short combinatorial proof that the two calculi are equivalent, and thus describe the same classes of 3-manifolds. This makes the proofs for the validity of surgery calculi in [FR] and [Ke] interchangeable.
We exhibit a finite set of local moves that connect any two surgery presentations of the same 3-manifold via framed links in the three-sphere. The moves are handle-slides and blow-downs/ups of a particular simple kind.
A theorem of Kirby gives a necessary and sufficient condition for two framed links in S^3 to yield orientation-preserving diffeomorphic results of surgery. Kirby's theorem is an important method for constructing invariants of 3-manifolds. In this paper, we prove a variant of Kirby's theorem for null-homologous framed links in a 3-manifold. This result involves a new kind of moves, called IHX-moves, which are closely related to the IHX relation in the theory of finite type invariants. When the first homology group of M is free abelian, we give a refinement of this result to \pm1-framed, algebra…
Kirby proved that two framed links in S^3 give orientation-preserving homeomorphic results of surgery if and only if these two links are related by a sequence of two kinds of moves called stabilizations and handle-slides. Fenn and Rourke gave a necessary and sufficient condition for two framed links in a closed, oriented 3-manifold to be related by a finite sequence of these moves. The purpose of this paper is twofold. We first give a generalization of Fenn and Rourke's result to 3-manifolds with boundary. Then we apply this result to the case of framed links whose components are null-homotopi…
Kirby and Thompson introduced a non-negative integer-valued invariant, called the Kirby-Thompson invariant, of a $4$-manifold using trisections. In this paper, we give some lower bounds for the Kirby-Thompson invariant of certain $4$-manifolds. As an application, we determine the Kirby-Thompson invariant of the spin of $L(2,1)$, which is the first example of a $4$-manifold with non-trivial Kirby-Thompson invariant. We also show that there exist $4$-manifolds with arbitrarily large Kirby-Thompson invariant.
A theorem of Kirby states that two framed links in the 3-sphere produce orientation-preserving homeomorphic results of surgery if they are related by a sequence of stabilization and handle-slide moves. The purpose of the present paper is twofold: First, we give a sufficient condition for a sequence of handle-slides on framed links to be able to be replaced with a sequences of algebraically canceling pairs of handle-slides. Then, using the first result, we obtain a refinement of Kirby's calculus for integral homology spheres which involves only +/-1-framed links with zero linking numbers.
Kirby and Thompson introduced a length of a trisection. They also defined the length of a 4-manifold as the minimum of length among all lengths of trisection of a 4-manifold. In this paper, we consider trisections whose Kirby-Thompson length is 2. Kirby and Thompson conjectured that length 2 trisection is a trisection of 4-manifold with length 0. We shall prove this conjecture in this paper.
We present an algorithm taking a Kirby diagram of a closed oriented $4$-manifold to a trisection diagram of the same manifold. This algorithm provides us with a large number of examples for trisection diagrams of closed oriented $4$-manifolds since many Kirby-diagrammatic descriptions of closed oriented $4$-manifolds are known. That being said, the algorithm does not necessarily provide particularly efficient trisection diagrams. We also extend this algorithm to work for the non-orientable case.
We show that simple coverings of B^4 branched over ribbon surfaces up to certain local ribbon moves bijectively represent orientable 4-dimensional 2-handlebodies up to handle sliding and addition/deletion of cancelling handles. As a consequence, we obtain an equivalence theorem for simple coverings of S^3 branched over links, in terms of local moves. This result generalizes to coverings of any degree results by the second author and Apostolakis, concerning respectively the case of degree 3 and 4. We also provide an extension of our equivalence theorem to possibly non-simple coverings of S^3 br…
It is well-known that in dimension 4 any framed link $(L,c)$ uniquely represents the PL 4-manifold $M^4(L,c)$ obtained from $\mathbb D^4$ by adding 2-handles along $(L,c)$. Moreover, if trivial dotted components are also allowed (i.e. in case of a Kirby diagram $(L^{(*)},d)$), the associated PL 4-manifold $M^4(L^{(*)},d)$ is obtained from $\mathbb D^4$ by adding 1-handles along the dotted components and 2-handles along the framed components. In this paper we study the relationships between framed links and/or Kirby diagrams and the representation theory of compact PL manifolds by edge-colored …
This is an expository account of the author's collaboration with Rob Kirby leading up to the theory of trisections of smooth 4-manifolds. This article was written for inclusion in an upcoming issue of Celebratio Mathematica dedicated to Rob Kirby's mathematical work.
We give a construction of Kirby weight systems associated to sl(2) and valued into the finite field Z/pZ. We show that it is possible to apply this sequence of weight systems on the universal invariant of framed link. We also show that the corresponding sequence admits a Fermat limit, which defines an asymptotic rational homology 3-sphere quantum invariant. Moreover, this asymptotic invariant coincides with the Ohtsuki invariant.
Harer, Kas and Kirby have conjectured that every handle decomposition of the elliptic surface $E(1)_{2,3}$ requires both 1- and 3-handles. In this article, we construct a smooth 4-manifold which has the same Seiberg-Witten invariant as $E(1)_{2,3}$ and admits neither 1- nor 3-handles, by using rational blow-downs and Kirby calculus. Our manifold gives the first example of either a counterexample to the Harer-Kas-Kirby conjecture or a homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic pair of simply connected closed smooth 4-manifolds with the same non-vanishing Seiberg-Witten invariants.
One can define the complexity of a smooth 4-manifold as the minimal sum of the number of disks, strands and crossings in a Kirby diagram. Martelli proved that the number of homeomorphism classes of complexity less than n grows as $n^2$. In this paper we prove that the number of diffeomorphism classes grows at least as fast as $n^{c\sqrt[3]{n}}$. Along the way we construct complete kirby diagrams for a large family of knot surgery manifolds.

Using techniques from the theory of Kirby calculus we give an explicit construction of a four dimensional hyperbolic link complement in a 4-manifold that is diffeomorphic to the standard 4-sphere.
In this note we show that there are 4-manifolds not containing Gompf nucleus $N_2$; in this way we answer Problem 4.98 of Kirby's problem list in the negative.
We construct what we call a Kirby category, a monoidal category whose morphisms are smooth 4-manifolds, projecting down to another monoidal category whose morphisms are orientable 3-manifolds, the projection being induced by the boundary map on manifolds. We construct a higher categorical generalization of such concepts and introduce the notion of ribbon $\infty$-categories, a generalization of braided monoidal $\infty$-categories (\cite{Lu1}), which gives rise to the concepts of $\infty$-links, $\infty$-4-manifolds as well as the more general notion of walled $\infty$-4-manifolds if one focus…
Using techniques from the theory of Kirby calculus we give an explicit construction of a four dimensional hyperbolic link complement in a 4-manifold that is diffeomorphic to a standard $S^2 \times S^2$.
A family of TQFTs parametrised by G-crossed braided spherical fusion categories has been defined recently as a state sum model and as a Hamiltonian lattice model. Concrete calculations of the resulting manifold invariants are scarce because of the combinatorial complexity of triangulations, if nothing else. Handle decompositions, and in particular Kirby diagrams are known to offer an economic and intuitive description of 4-manifolds. We show that if 3-handles are added to the picture, the state sum model can be conveniently redefined by translating Kirby diagrams into the graphical calculus of…
We solve a strong version of Problem 3.6 (D) in Kirby's list, that is, we show that for any integer $n$, there exist infinitely many mutually distinct knots such that $2$-handle additions along them with framing $n$ yield the same $4$-manifold.
Rochlin proved that a closed 4-dimensional connected smooth oriented manifold $X^4$ with vanishing second Stiefel-Whitney class has signature $σ(X)$ divisible by 16. This was generalized by Kervaire and Milnor to the statement that if $ξ\in H_2(X;\mathbb{Z})$ is an integral lift of an element in $H_2(X; \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})$ that is dual to $w_2(X)$, and if $ξ$ can be represented by an embedded sphere in $X$, then the self-intersection number $ξ^2$ is divisible by 16. This was subsequently generalized further by Rochlin and various alternative proofs of this result where given by Freedman, …
We study trisections of smooth, compact non-orientable 4-manifolds, and introduce trisections of non-orientable 4-manifolds with boundary. In particular, we prove a non-orientable analogue of a classical theorem of Laudenbach-Poénaru. As a consequence, trisection diagrams and Kirby diagrams of closed non-orientable 4-manifolds exist. We discuss how the theory of trisections may be adapted to the setting of non-orientable 4-manifolds with many examples.
Using Kirby Calculus, we explicitly pass from Berge's R-R descriptions of ten families of knots with lens space surgeries to surgery descriptions on the minimally twisted five chain link (MT5C). Since the MT5C admits a strong involution, we also give the corresponding tangle descriptions.
Gay and Kirby introduced the notion of a trisection of a smooth 4-manifold, which is a decomposition of the 4-manifold into three elementary pieces. Rubinstein and Tillmann later extended this idea to construct multisections of piecewise-linear (PL) manifolds in all dimensions. Given a PL manifold $Y$ of dimension $n$, this is a decomposition of $Y$ into $\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor + 1$ PL submanifolds. We show that every smooth, oriented, compact 5-manifold admits a smooth trisection compatible with any desired trisection of its boundary.
Recently Gay and Kirby described a new decomposition of smooth closed $4$-manifolds called a trisection. This paper generalises Heegaard splittings of $3$-manifolds and trisections of $4$-manifolds to all dimensions, using triangulations as a key tool. In particular, we prove that every closed piecewise linear $n$-manifold has a multisection, i.e. can be divided into $k+1$ $n$-dimensional $1$-handlebodies, where $n=2k+1$ or $n=2k$, such that intersections of the handlebodies have spines of small dimensions. Several applications, constructions and generalisations of our approach are given.
This is a survey paper where we expose the Kirby--Siebenmann results on classification of PL structures on topological manifolds and, in particular, the homotopy equivalence TOP/PL=K(Z/2.3) and the Hauptvermutung for manifolds.
We give examples of closed orientable graph 3-manifolds with fundamental group which is not a subgroup of GL(4,k) for any field k. This answers a question in the Kirby problem list from 1977 which is credited to the late William Thurston.
Let X be a simply-connected closed oriented 4-manifold and A an embedded surface of genus g and negative self-intersection -N. We show that for fixed genus g there is an upper bound on N if the homology class of A is divisible or characteristic. In particular, for genus zero, there is a lower bound on the self-intersection of embedded spheres in these kinds of homology classes. This question is related to a problem from the Kirby list.
This paper gives a summary of our approach to invariants of three manifolds via right integrals on finite dimensional Hopf algebras and their relation to the Kirby calculus.
We extend the theory of relative trisections of smooth, compact, oriented $4$-manifolds with connected boundary given by Gay and Kirby to include $4$-manifolds with an arbitrary number of boundary components. Additionally, we provide sufficient conditions under which relatively trisected $4$-manifolds can be glued to one another along diffeomorphic boundary components so as to induce a trisected manifold. These two results allow us to define a category $\textrm{Tri}$ whose objects are smooth, closed, oriented $3$-manifolds equipped with open book decompositions, and morphisms are relatively tr…
In this paper we study colored triangulations of compact PL 4-manifolds with empty or connected boundary which induce handle decompositions lacking in 1-handles or in 1- and 3-handles, thus facing also the problem, posed by Kirby, of the existence of {\it special handlebody decompositions} for any simply-connected closed PL 4-manifold. In particular, we detect a class of compact simply-connected PL 4-manifolds with empty or connected boundary, which admit such decompositions and, therefore, can be represented by (undotted) framed links. Moreover, this class includes any compact simply-connecte…
We study the effect of Nielsen moves and their geometric counterparts, handle slides, on good boundary links. A collection of links, universal for 4-dimensional surgery, is shown to admit Seifert surfaces with trivial Lagrangian. They are good boundary links, with Seifert matrices of a more general form than in known constructions of slice links. We show that a certain more restrictive condition on Seifert matrices is sufficient for proving the links are slice. We also give a correction of a Kirby calculus identity in \cite{FK2}, useful for constructing surgery kernels associated to link-slice…
We show that only finitely many links in a closed 3-manifold share the same complement, up to twists along discs and annuli. Using the same techniques, we prove that by adding 2-handles on the same link we get only finitely many smooth cobordisms between two given closed 3-manifolds. As a consequence, there are finitely many smooth closed 4-manifolds constructed from some Kirby diagram with bounded number of crossings, discs, and strands, or from some Turaev special shadow with bounded number of vertices. (These are the 4-dimensional analogues of Heegaard diagrams and special spines for 3-mani…
Refining the notion of an ideal triangulation of a compact three-manifold, we provide in this paper a combinatorial presentation of the set of pairs (M,a), where M is a three-manifold and a is a collection of properly embedded arcs. We also show that certain well-understood combinatorial moves are sufficient to relate to each other any two refined triangulations representing the same (M,a). Our proof does not assume the Matveev-Pergallini calculus for ideal triangulations, and actually easily implies this calculus.
Although Kirby and Siebenmann showed that there are manifolds that do not admit PL structures, the possibility remained that all manifolds could be triangulated. In the late seventies Galewski and Stern and independently Matumoto showed that non-triangulable manifolds exist in all dimensions > 4 if and only if homology 3-spheres with certain properties do not exist. In 2013 Manolescu showed that, indeed, there were no such homology 3-spheres and hence, non-triangulable manifolds exist in each dimension >4. It follows from work of Freedman in 1982 that there are 4-manifolds that cannot be trian…
We show that, for each integer n, there exist infinitely many pairs of n-framed knots representing homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic (Stein) 4-manifolds, which are the simplest possible exotic 4-manifolds regarding handlebody structures. To produce these examples, we introduce a new description of cork twists and utilize satellite maps. As an application, we produce knots with the same 0-surgery which are not concordant for any orientations, disproving the Akbulut-Kirby conjecture given in 1978.
We examine questions about surgery on links which arise naturally from the trisection decomposition of 4-manifolds developed by Gay and Kirby. These links lie on Heegaard surfaces in $\#^j S^1 \times S^2$ and have surgeries yielding $\#^k S^1 \times S^2$. We describe families of links which have such surgeries. One can ask whether all links with such surgeries lie in these families; the answer is almost certainly no. We nevertheless give a small piece of evidence in favor of a positive answer.
Manifold calculus of functors, due to M. Weiss, studies contravariant functors from the poset of open subsets of a smooth manifold to topological spaces. We introduce "multivariable" manifold calculus of functors which is a generalization of this theory to functors whose domain is a product of categories of open sets. We construct multivariable Taylor approximations to such functors, classify multivariable homogeneous functors, apply this classification to compute the derivatives of a functor, and show what this gives for the space of link maps. We also relate Taylor approximations in single v…
We establish a calculus for branched spines of 3-manifolds by means of branched Matveev-Piergallini moves and branched bubble-moves. We briefly indicate some of its possible applications in the study and definition of State-Sum Quantum Invariants.
We develop a generalization of manifold calculus in the sense of Goodwillie-Weiss where the manifold is replaced by a simplicial complex. We consider functors from the category of open subsets of a fixed simplical complex into the category of topological spaces and prove an analogue of the approximation theorem. Namely, under certain conditions such a functor can be approximated by a tower of (appropriately adapted) polynomial functors.
