In this paper we construct number fields ramified at 2 and 3 only, with various moderate-sized non-solvable Galois groups. We construct these fields by specializing three point covers, some from the literature and some new here. The specialization points come from solutions to a generalized Fermat equation. We conclude with a specific suggestion for further research and two general conjectures.
In this note we give a counter example to a conjecture of Malle which predicts the asymptotic behaviour of the counting functions for field extensions with given Galois group and bounded discriminant.
We compute the canonical model of the cover of Shimura curves $X_0(2) \to X(1)$ for the cubic field of discriminant 13^2 described at the end of Elkies' paper "Shimura curves for level 3 subgroups of the (2,3,7) triangle group". Last, we list the coordinates of some rational CM points on X(1).
Given a finite transitive permutation group $G$, we investigate number fields $F/\mathbb{Q}$ of Galois group $G$ whose discriminant is only divisible by small prime powers. This generalizes previous investigations of number fields with squarefree discriminant. In particular, we obtain a comprehensive result on number fields with cubefree discriminant. Our main tools are arithmetic-geometric, involving in particular an effective criterion on ramification in specializations of Galois covers.
This paper was motivated by a recent paper by Krumm and Pollack investigating modulo-$p$ behaviour of quadratic twists with rational points of a given hyperelliptic curve, conditional on the abc-conjecture. We extend those results to twisted Galois covers with arbitrary Galois groups. The main point of this generalization is to interpret those results as statements about the sets of specializations of a given Galois cover under restrictions on the discriminant. In particular, we make a connection with existing heuristics about the distribution of discriminants of Galois extensions such as the …
We show that for a large class of finite groups G, the number of Galois extensions E/Q of group G and discriminant $|d_E|\leq y$ grows like a power of $y$ (for some specified exponent). The groups G are the regular Galois groups over Q and the extensions E/Q that we count are obtained by specialization from a given regular Galois extension F/Q(T). The extensions E/Q can further be prescribed any unramified local behavior at each suitably large prime $p\leq \log (y)/δ$ for some $δ\geq 1$. This result is a step toward the Malle conjecture on the number of Galois extensions of given group and bou…
Let $K=\mathbb Q(θ)$ be an algebraic number field with $θ$ a root of an irreducible trinomial $f(x)=x^6+ax+b$ belonging to $\mathbb{Z}[x]$. In this paper, for each prime number $p$ we compute the highest power of $p$ dividing the discriminant of $K$ in terms of the prime powers dividing $a,~b$ and discriminant of $f(x)$. An explicit $p$-integral basis of $K$ is also given for each prime $p$ and a method is described to obtain an integral basis of $K$ from these $p$-integral bases which is illustrated with examples.
We construct explicit examples of cubic surfaces over $\bbQ$ such that the 27 lines are acted upon by the index two subgroup of the maximal possible Galois group. This is the simple group of order $25 920$. Our examples are given in pentahedral normal form with rational coefficients. For such cubic surfaces, we study the discriminant and show its relation to the index two subgroup. On the corresponding parameter space, we search for rational points, discuss their asymptotic, and construct an accumulating subvariety.
Let $K = \Q(θ)$ be an algebraic number field with $θ$ satisfying an irreducible polynomial $x^{9} - a$ over the field $\Q$ of rationals and $\Z_K$ denote the ring of algebraic integers of $K$. In this article, we provide the exact power of each prime which divides the index of the subgroup $\Z[θ]$ in $\Z_K$. Further, we give a $p$-integral basis of $K$ for each prime $p$. These $p$-integral bases lead to a construction of an integral basis of $K$ which is illustrated with examples.
We study A-discriminants from a non-Archimedean point of view, refining earlier work on the tropical discriminant. In particular, we study the case where $A$ is a collection of n+m+1 points in Z^n in general position, and give an algorithm to compute the image of the A-discriminant variety under the non-Archimedean evaluation map. When m=2, our approach yields tight lower and upper bounds, of order quadratic in n. We also detail a Sage package for plotting certain p-adic discriminant amoebae, and present explicit examples of point sets yielding discriminant amoebae with extremal behavior.
For a binary quadratic form $Q$, we consider the action of $\mathrm{SO}_Q$ on a two-dimensional vector space. This representation yields perhaps the simplest nontrivial example of a prehomogeneous vector space that is not irreducible, and of a coregular space whose underlying group is not semisimple. We show that the nondegenerate integer orbits of this representation are in natural bijection with orders in cubic fields having a fixed "lattice shape". Moreover, this correspondence is discriminant-preserving: the value of the invariant polynomial of an element in this representation agrees with…
This is the third part of a series of articles providing a foundation for the theory of Drinfeld modular forms of arbitrary rank. In the present article we construct and study some examples of Drinfeld modular forms. In particular we define Eisenstein series, as well as the action of Hecke operators upon them, coefficient forms and discriminant forms. In the special case A=F_q[t] we show that all modular forms for GL_r(Γ(t)) are generated by certain weight one Eisenstein series, and all modular forms for GL_r(A) and SL_r(A) are generated by certain coefficient forms and discriminant forms. We …
Using the action of the Galois group of a normal extension of number fields, we generalize and symmetrize various fundamental statements in algebra and algebraic number theory concerning splitting types of prime ideals, factorization types of polynomials modulo primes, and cycle types of the Galois groups of polynomials. One remarkable example is the removal of all artificial constraints from the Kummer-Dedekind Theorem that relates splitting and factorization patterns. Finally, we present an elementary proof that the discriminant of the splitting field of a monic irreducible polynomial with i…
We compute explicit rational models for some Hilbert modular surfaces corresponding to square discriminants, by connecting them to moduli spaces of elliptic K3 surfaces. Since they parametrize decomposable principally polarized abelian surfaces, they are also moduli spaces for genus-2 curves covering elliptic curves via a map of fixed degree. We thereby extend classical work of Jacobi, Hermite, Bolza etc., and more recent work of Kuhn, Frey, Kani, Shaska, Völklein, Magaard and others, producing explicit families of reducible Jacobians. In particular, we produce a birational model for the modul…
Tate first proposed a method to determine $K_2\mathcal{O}_F,$ the tame kernel of $F,$ and gave the concrete computations for some special quadratic fields with small discriminant. After that, many examples for quadratic fields with larger discriminants are given, and similar works also have been done for cubic fields and for some special quartic fields with discriminants not large. In the present paper, we investigate the case of more general imaginary cyclic quartic field $F=\mathbb{Q}\Big(\sqrt{-(D+B\sqrt{D})}\Big)$ with class number one and large discriminants. The key problem is how to dec…
We prove upper bounds for the average size of the $\ell$-torsion $\text{Cl}_K[\ell]$ of the class group of $K$, as $K$ runs through certain natural families of number fields and $\ell$ is a positive integer. We refine a key argument, used in almost all results of this type, which links upper bounds for $\text{Cl}_K[\ell]$ to the existence of many primes splitting completely in $K$ that are small compared to the discriminant of $K$. Our improvements are achieved through the introduction of a new family of specialised invariants of number fields to replace the discriminant in this argument, in c…
In previous works, we described algorithms to compute the number field cut out by the mod ell representation attached to a modular form of level N=1. In this article, we explain how these algorithms can be generalised to forms of higher level N. As an application, we compute the Galois representations attached to a few forms which are supersingular or admit a companion mod ell with ell=13 (and soon ell=41), and we obtain previously unknown number fields of degree ell+1 whose Galois closure has Galois group PGL(2,ell) and a root discriminant that is so small that it beats records for such numbe…
The seminal papers in the field of root-discriminant bounds are those of Odlyzko and Martinet. Both papers include the question of whether the field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-5460})$ has finite or infinite $2$-class tower. This is a critical case that will either substantially lower the best known upper bound for lim inf of root-discriminants (if infinite) or else give a counter-example to what is often termed Martinet's conjecture or question (if finite). Using extensive computation and introducing some new techniques, we give strong evidence that the tower is in fact finite, establishing other prop…
We outline a general algorithm for computing an explicit model over a number field of any curve of genus 2 whose (unpolarized) Jacobian is isomorphic to the product of two elliptic curves with CM by the same order in an imaginary quadratic field. We give the details and some examples for the case where the order has prime discriminant and class number one
