Several relations on graphs, including primitive equivalence, explosion equivalence and strong shift equivalence, are examined and shown to preserve either the graph groupoid, a construction of Kumjian, Pask, Raeburn, and Renault, or the groupoid of a pointed version of the graph. Thus these relations preserve either the isomorphism class or the Morita equivalence class of the graph C*-algebra, as defined by Kumjian, Pask, and Raeburn.
We introduce higher-rank analogues of the Leavitt path algebras, which we call the Kumjian-Pask algebras. We prove graded and Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorems for these algebras, and analyze their ideal structure.
The Kumjian-Pask algebra KP(Λ) is a graded algebra associated to a higher-rank graph Λand is a generalization of the Leavitt path algebra of a directed graph. We analyze the minimal left-ideals of KP(Λ), and identify its socle as a graded ideal by describing its generators in terms of a subset of vertices of the graph. We characterize when KP(Λ) is semisimple, and obtain a complete structure theorem for a semisimple Kumjian-Pask algebra.
In this thesis we generalise the six-term exact sequence in graded $KK$-theory obtained in a paper of Kumjian, Pask and Sims (2017) to allow correspondences with non-compact left action. In particular, this allows us to compute the graded $KK$-theory of row-infinite graphs. We develop the theory necessary for following the arguments of Kumjian, Pask and Sims and of Pimsner (1997), with detailed sections on Hilbert modules, $C^*$-correspondences, Crossed products, Toeplitz algebras, Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and $KK$-theory.
We initiate the program of extending to higher-rank graphs ($k$-graphs) the geometric classification of directed graph $C^*$-algebras, as completed in the 2016 paper of Eilers, Restorff, Ruiz, and Sorensen [ERRS16]. To be precise, we identify four "moves," or modifications, one can perform on a $k$-graph $Λ$, which leave invariant the Morita equivalence class of its $C^*$-algebra $C^*(Λ)$. These moves -- insplitting, delay, sink deletion, and reduction -- are inspired by the moves for directed graphs described by Sorensen [S\o13] and Bates-Pask [BP04]. Because of this, our perspective on $k$-g…

Every AF-algebra arises as a graph algebra in the sense of Kumjian, Pask, Raeburn, and Renault. For AF-algebras, the diagonal subalgebra defined by Stratila and Voiculescu is consistent with Kumjian's notion of diagonal, and the groupoid arising from a well-chosen Bratteli diagram for A coincides with Kumjian's twist groupoid constructed from a diagonal of A.
Kumjian and Pask introduced an aperiodicity condition for higher rank graphs. We present a detailed analysis of when this occurs in certain rank 2 graphs. When the algebra is aperiodic, we give another proof of the simplicity of $\ca(\Fth)$. The periodic C*-algebras are characterized, and it is shown that $\ca(\Fth) \simeq \rC(\bT) \otimes \fA$ where $\fA$ is a simple C*-algebra.
To a higher rank directed graph $(Λ, d)$, in the sense of Kumjian and Pask, one can associate natural noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebras, both weakly closed and norm closed. We introduce methods for the classification of these algebras in the case of single vertex graphs.
Given a $k$-graph $Λ$ we construct a Markov space $M_Λ$, and a collection of $k$ pairwise commuting cellular automata on $M_Λ$, providing for a factorization of Markov's shift. Iterating these maps we obtain an action of ${\mathbb N}^k$ on $M_Λ$ which is then used to form a semidirect product groupoid $M_Λ\rtimes {\mathbb N}^k$. This groupoid turns out to be identical to the path groupoid constructed by Kumjian and Pask, and hence its C*-algebra is isomorphic to the higher rank graph C*-algebra of $Λ$.
Higher-rank graphs (or $k$-graphs) were introduced by Kumjian and Pask to provide combinatorial models for the higher-rank Cuntz-Krieger $C^*$-algebras of Robertson and Steger. Here we consider a family of finite 2-graphs whose path spaces are dynamical systems of algebraic origin, as studied by Schmidt and others. We analyse the $C^*$-algebras of these 2-graphs, find criteria under which they are simple and purely infinite, and compute their $K$-theory. We find examples whose $C^*$-algebras satisfy the hypotheses of the classification theorem of Kirchberg and Phillips, but are not isomorphic …
There has recently been much interest in the $C^*$-algebras of directed graphs. Here we consider product systems $E$ of directed graphs over semigroups and associated $C^*$-algebras $C^*(E)$ and $\mathcal{T}C^*(E)$ which generalise the higher-rank graph algebras of Kumjian-Pask and their Toeplitz analogues. We study these algebras by constructing from $E$ a product system $X(E)$ of Hilbert bimodules, and applying recent results of Fowler about the Toeplitz algebras of such systems. Fowler's hypotheses turn out to be very interesting graph-theoretically, and indicate new relations which will ha…
This dissertation concerns the classification of groupoid and higher-rank graph C*-algebras and has two main components. Firstly, for a groupoid it is shown that the notions of strength of convergence in the orbit space and measure-theoretic accumulation along the orbits are equivalent ways of realising multiplicity numbers associated to a sequence of induced representations of the groupoid C*-algebra. Examples of directed graphs are given, showing how to determine the multiplicity numbers associated to various sequences of induced representations of the directed graph C*-algebras. The second …
We use category-theoretic techniques to provide two proofs showing that for a higher-rank graph $Λ$, its cubical (co-)homology and categorical (co-)homology groups are isomorphic in all degrees, thus answering a question of Kumjian, Pask and Sims in the positive. Our first proof uses the topological realization of a higher-rank graph, which was introduced by Kaliszewski, Kumjian, Quigg, and Sims. In our more combinatorial second proof, we construct, explicitly and in both directions, maps on the level of (co-)chain complexes that implement said isomorphism. Along the way, we extend the definit…
We discuss strong shift equivalence, which has been used to characterize conjugacy of edge shifts, and its application to C*-algebras of graphs and Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
In this paper we describe an operation on directed graphs which produces a graph with fewer vertices, such that the C*-algebra of the new graph is Morita equivalent to that of the original graph. We unify and generalize several related constructions, notably delays and desingularizations of directed graphs.
Let G be a locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid in which s is a local homeomorphism and the unit space is totally disconnected. Assume there is a continuous cocycle c from G into a discrete group $Γ$. We show that the collection A(G) of locally-constant, compactly supported functions on G is a dense *-subalgebra of C_c(G) and that it is universal for algebraic representations of the collection of compact open bisections of G. We also show that if G is the groupoid associated to a row-finite graph or k-graph with no sources, then A(G) is isomorphic to the associated Leavitt path algebra or Kumji…
This paper explores the effect of various graphical constructions upon the associated graph $C^*$-algebras. The graphical constructions in question arise naturally in the study of flow equivalence for topological Markov chains. We prove that out-splittings give rise to isomorphic graph algebras, and in-splittings give rise to strongly Morita equivalent $C^*$-algebras. We generalise the notion of a delay as defined by Drinen to form in-delays and out-delays. We prove that these constructions give rise to Morita equivalent graph $C^*$-algebras. We provide examples which suggest that our results …
In this article we show that there are branching systems (which induce representations of the graph algebra $C^*(E)$) associated to each row-countable graph $E$. For row-countable graphs, we characterize the condition $(L)$ via branching systems. Moreover, we show that each permutative representation in Hilbert spaces operators is unitarily equivalent to one induced by a branching system, even the spaces being not separable. Furthermore, under some hypothesis on the graph, we show that each representation of the graph C*-algebra is permutative.
We prove that the classes of graph algebras, Exel-Laca algebras, and ultragraph algebras coincide up to Morita equivalence. This result answers the long-standing open question of whether every Exel-Laca algebra is Morita equivalent to a graph algebra. Given an ultragraph G we construct a directed graph E such that C*(G) is isomorphic to a full corner of C*(E). As applications, we characterize real rank zero for ultragraph algebras and describe quotients of ultragraph algebras by gauge-invariant ideals.
We introduce the notion of orbit equivalence of directed graphs, following Matsumoto's notion of continuous orbit equivalence for topological Markov shifts. We show that two graphs in which every cycle has an exit are orbit equivalent if and only if there is a diagonal-preserving isomorphism between their $C^*$-algebras. We show that it is necessary to assume that every cycle has an exit for the forward implication, but that the reverse implication holds for arbitrary graphs. As part of our analysis of arbitrary graphs $E$ we construct a groupoid $\mathcal{G}_{(C^*(E),\mathcal{D}(E))}$ from th…
We prove that ample groupoids with sigma-compact unit spaces are equivalent if and only if they are stably isomorphic in an appropriate sense, and relate this to Matui's notion of Kakutani equivalence. We use this result to show that diagonal-preserving stable isomorphisms of graph C*-algebras or Leavitt path algebras give rise to isomorphisms of the groupoids of the associated stabilised graphs. We deduce that the Leavitt path algebras $L_Z(E_2)$ and $L_Z(E_{2-})$ are not stably *-isomorphic.
This paper continues our investigation into the question of when a homotopy $ω= \{ω_t\}_{t \in [0,1]}$ of 2-cocycles on a locally compact Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ gives rise to an isomorphism of the $K$-theory groups of the twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebras: $K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}, ω_0)) \cong K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}, ω_1)).$ In particular, we build on work by Kumjian, Pask, and Sims to show that if $\mathcal{G} = \mathcal{G}_Λ$ is the infinite path groupoid associated to a row-finite higher-rank graph $Λ$ with no sources, and $\{c_t\}_{t \in [0,1]}$ is a homotopy of 2-cocycles on $Λ$, then $K…
We describe a method for associating some non-self-adjoint algebras to Mauldin-Williams graphs and we study the Morita equivalence and isomorphism of these algebras. We also investigate the relationship between the Morita equivalence and isomorphism class of the C^{\ast} -correspondences associated with Mauldin-Williams graphs and the dynamical properties of the Mauldin-Williams graphs.
In this paper we show that, for a class of countable graphs, every representation of the associated graph algebra in a separable Hilbert space is unitarily equivalent to a representation obtained via branching systems.
A $λ$-graph system $\frak L$ is a labeled Bratteli diagram with shift operation. It is a generalized notion of finite labeled graph and presents a subshifts. We will study continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided subshifts and topological conjugacy of two-sided subshifts from the view points of groupoids and $C^*$-algebras constructed from $λ$-graph systems.
A certain synchronizing property for subshifts called $λ$-synchronization yields $λ$-graph systems called the $λ$-synchronizing $λ$-graph systems for the subshifts. The $λ$-synchronizing $λ$-graph system is a left Fischer cover analogue for a $λ$-synchronizing subshift. We will study algebraic structure of the $C^*$-algebra associated with the $λ$-synchronizing $λ$-graph system and prove that the stable isomorphism class of the $C^*$-algebra with its Cartan subalgebra is invariant under flow equivalence of $λ$-synchronizing subshifts.
For any countable graph $E$, we investigate the relationship between the Leavitt path algebra $L_{\C}(E)$ and the graph C*-algebra $C^*(E)$. For graphs $E$ and $F$, we examine ring homomorphisms, ring *-homomorphisms, algebra homomorphisms, and algebra *-homomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$. We prove that in certain situations isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ yield *-isomorphisms between the corresponding C*-algebras $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$. Conversely, we show that *-isomorphisms between $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$ produce isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ …

We note that the deep results of Grunewald and Segal on algorithmic problems for arithmetic groups imply the decidability of several matrix equivalence problems involving poset-blocked matrices over Z. Consequently, results of Eilers, Restorff, Ruiz and Sørensen imply that isomorphism and stable isomorphism of unital graph C*-algebras (including the Cuntz-Krieger algebras) are decidable. One can also decide flow equivalence for shifts of finite type, and isomorphism of Z-quiver representations (i.e., finite diagrams of homomorphisms of finitely generated abelian groups).
We show that the groupoids of two directed graphs are isomorphic if and only if the two graphs are orbit equivalent by an orbit equivalence that preserves isolated eventually periodic points. We also give a complete description of the (topological) isolated points of the boundary path space of a graph. As a result, we are able to show that the groupoids of two directed graphs with finitely many vertices and no sinks are isomorphic if and only if the two graphs are orbit equivalent, and that the groupoids of the stabilisations of two such graphs are isomorphic if and only if the stabilisations …
We consider probability measure preserving discrete groupoids, group actions and equivalence relations in the context of general probability spaces. We study for these objects the notions of cost, $β$-invariant and some higher-dimensional variants. We also propose various convergence results about $\ell^2$-Betti numbers and rank gradient for sequences of actions, groupoids or equivalence relations under weak finiteness assumptions. In particular we connect the combinatorial cost with the cost of the ultralimit equivalence relations. Finally a relative version of Stuck-Zimmer property is also c…
