Higher-rank graphs (or $k$-graphs) were introduced by Kumjian and Pask to provide combinatorial models for the higher-rank Cuntz-Krieger $C^*$-algebras of Robertson and Steger. Here we consider a family of finite 2-graphs whose path spaces are dynamical systems of algebraic origin, as studied by Schmidt and others. We analyse the $C^*$-algebras of these 2-graphs, find criteria under which they are simple and purely infinite, and compute their $K$-theory. We find examples whose $C^*$-algebras satisfy the hypotheses of the classification theorem of Kirchberg and Phillips, but are not isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebras of ordinary directed graphs.
We present a class of subshifts $Z_N, N = 1,2,...$ whose associated $C^*$-algebras ${\cal O}_{Z_N}$ are simple, purely infinite and not stably isomorphic to any Cuntz-Krieger algebra nor to Cuntz algebra. The class of the subshifts is the first examples whose associated $C^*$-algebras are not stably isomorphic to any Cuntz-Krieger algebra nor to Cuntz algebra. The subshifts $Z_N$ are coded systems whose languages are context free. We compute the topological entropy for the subshifts and show that KMS-state for gauge action on the associated $C^*$-algebra ${\cal O}_{Z_N}$ exists if and only if …
A $λ$-graph bisystem $\mathcal{L}$ consists of two labeled Bratteli diagrams $(\mathcal{L}^-,\mathcal{L}^+)$, that presents a two-sided subshift $Λ_\mathcal{L}$. We will construct a compact totally disconnected metric space with a shift homeomorphism consisting of two-dimensional configurations from a $λ$-graph bisystem. The configuration space has a certain étale AF-equivalence relation written $R_{\mathcal{L}}$ with a natural shift homeomorphism $σ_{\mathcal{L}}$ coming from the shift homeomorphism $σ_{Λ_{\mathcal{L}}}$ on the subshift $Λ_{\mathcal{L}}$. The equivalence relation $R_{\mathcal…
Let $A$ be an $N \times N $ irreducible matrix with entries in $\{0,1\}$. We define the topological Markov Dyck shift $D_A$ to be a nonsofic subshift consisting of the $2N$ brackets $(_1,...,(_N,)_1,...,)_N$ with both standard bracket rule and Markov chain rule coming from $A$. The subshift is regarded as a subshift defined by the canonical generators $S_1^*,..., S_N^*, S_1,..., S_N $ of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra ${\Cal O}_A$. We construct an irreducible $λ$-graph system ${{\frak L}^{Ch(D_A)}}$ that presents the subshift $D_A$ so that we have an associated simple purely infinite $C^*$-algebra …
We introduce a class of subshifts under the name of "standard one-counter shifts". The standard one-counter shifts are the Markov coded systems of certain Markov codes that belong to the family of one-counter languages. We study topological conjugacy and flow equivalence of standard one-counter shifts. To subshifts there are associated C*-algebras by their $λ$-graph systems. We describe a class of standard one-counter shifts with the property that the C*-algebra associated to them is simple, while the C*-algebra that is associated to their inverse is not. This gives examples of subshifts that …
Higher-rank graphs were introduced by Kumjian and Pask to provide models for higher-rank Cuntz-Krieger algebras. In a previous paper, we constructed 2-graphs whose path spaces are rank-two subshifts of finite type, and showed that this construction yields aperiodic 2-graphs whose $C^*$-algebras are simple and are not ordinary graph algebras. Here we show that the construction also gives a family of periodic 2-graphs which we call \emph{domino graphs}. We investigate the combinatorial structure of domino graphs, finding interesting points of contact with the existing combinatorial literature, a…
It is now well known that a simple graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E)$ of a directed graph $E$ is either AF or purely infinite. In this paper, we address the question of whether this is the case for labeled graph $C^*$-algebras recently introduced by Bates and Pask as one of the generalizations of graph $C^*$-algebras, and show that there exists a family of simple unital labeled graph $C^*$-algebras which are neither AF nor purely infinite. Actually these algebras are shown to be isomorphic to crossed products $C(X)\times_T \mathbb Z$ where the dynamical systems $(X,T)$ are Cantor minimal subshifts. …
Given a finite alphabet $Λ$, and a not necessarily finite type subshift $X\subseteq Λ^\infty$, we introduce a partial action of the free group $F(Λ)$ on a certain compactification $Ω_X$ of $X$, which we call the spectral partial action. The space $Ω_X$ has already appeared in many papers in the subject, arising as the spectrum of a commutative C*-algebra usually denoted by ${\cal D}_X$. Since the descriptions given of $Ω_X$ in the literature are often somewhat terse and obscure, one of our main goals is to present a sensible model for it which allows for a detailed study of its structure, as w…
To any periodic, unital and full C*-dynamical system (A, α, R) an invertible operator s acting on the Banach space of trace functionals of the fixed point algebra is canonically associated. KMS states correspond to positive eigenvectors of s. A Perron-Frobenius type theorem asserts the existence of KMS states at inverse temperatures equal the logarithms of the inner and outer spectral radii of s (extremal KMS states). Examples arising from subshifts in symbolic dynamics, self-similar sets in fractal geometry and noncommutative metric spaces are discussed. Certain subshifts are naturally associ…
We propose a construction for spectral triple on algebras associated with subshifts. One-dimensional subshifts provide concrete examples Z-actions on Cantor sets. The C*-algebra of this dynamical system is generated by functions in C(X) and a unitary element u implementing the action. Building on ideas of Christensen and Ivan, we give a construction of a family of spectral triples on the commutative algebra C(X). There is a canonical choice of eigenvalues for the Dirac operator D which ensures that [D,u] is bounded, so that it extends to a spectral triple on the crossed product. We study the s…
We have introduced a notion of $C^*$-symbolic dynamical system in [K. Matsumoto: Actions of symbolic dynamical systems on $C^*$-algebras, to appear in J. Reine Angew. Math.], that is a finite family of endomorphisms of a $C^*$-algebra with some conditions. The endomorphisms are indexed by symbols and yield both a subshift and a $C^*$-algebra of a Hilbert $C^*$-bimodule. The associated $C^*$-algebra with the $C^*$-symbolic dynamical system is regarded as a crossed product by the subshift. We will study a simplicity condition of the $C^*$-algebras of the $C^*$-symbolic dynamical systems. Some ex…
A $C^*$-textile dynamical system $({\cal A}, ρ,η,Σ^ρ,Σ^η, κ)$ connsists of a unital $C^*$-algebra ${\cal A}$, two families of endomorphisms ${ρ_α}_{α\in Σ^ρ}$ and ${η_a}_{a \in Σ^η}$ of ${\cal A}$ and certain commutation relations $κ$ among them. It yields a two-dimensional subshift and multi structure of Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules, which we call a Hilbert $C^*$-quad module. We introduce a $C^*$-algebra from the Hilbert $C^*$-quad module as a two-dimensional analogue of Pimsner's construction of $C^*$-algebras from Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules. We study the $C^*$-algebras defined by the Hilbert $C^*$-…
We compute the $K$-groups for the Cuntz-Krieger algebras $\mathcal{O}_{A_{\mathcal{K}(f_μ)}}$, where $A_{\mathcal{K}(f_μ)}$ is the Markov transition matrix arising from the \textit{kneading sequence }$\mathcal{K} (f_μ)$ of the one-parameter family of real quadratic maps $f_μ$.
A Fejér-type theorem is proved within the framework of $C^*$-algebras associated with certain irreversible algebraic dynamical systems. This makes it possible to strengthen a result on the structure of the relative commutant of a family of generating isometries in a boundary quotient.
We show that every topological k-graph constructed from a locally compact Hausdorff space Ω and a family of pairwise commuting local homeomorphisms on Ω satisfying a uniform boundedness condition on the cardinalities of inverse images may be realized as a semigroup crossed product in the sense of Larsen.
We prove a family of new identities fulfilled by multinomial coefficients, which were conjectured by Dykema and Haagerup. Our method bases on a study of the, so-called, triangular operator T by the means of the free probability theory.
We will introduce a family $Γ_β, 1 < β\in {\mathbb{R}}$ of infinite non-amenable discrete groups as an interpolation of the Higman-Thompson groups $V_n, 1 < n \in {\mathbb{N}}$ by using the topological full groups of the groupoids defined by $β$-expansions of real numbers. They are regarded as full groups of certain interpolated Cuntz algebras. The groups $Γ_β, 1 < β\in {\mathbb{R}}$ are realized as groups of piecewise linear functions on $[0,1]$ if the $β$-expansion of $1$ is finite or ultimately periodic. We also classify the groups $Γ_β, 1 < β\in {\mathbb{R}}$ by the number theoretical prop…
Following a procedure due to V. Jones, using suitably normalized elements in a Temperley-Lieb-Jones (planar) algebra we introduce a 3-parametric family of unitary representations of the Thompson's group $F$ equipped with canonical (vacuum) vectors and study some of their properties. In particular, we discuss the behaviour at infinity of their matrix coefficients, thus showing that these representations do not contain any finite type component. We then focus on a particular representation known to be quasi-regular and irreducible and show that it is inequivalent to itself once composed with a c…
Using methods coming from non-formal equivariant quantization, we construct in this short note a unitary dual 2-cocycle on a discrete family of quotient groups of subgroups of the affine group of a local field (which is not of characteristic 2, nor an extension of $\mathbb{Q}_2$). Using results of De Commer about Galois objects in operator algebras, we obtain new examples of locally compact quantum groups in the setting of von Neumann algebras.
In this paper we introduce a family of examples that can be regarded as spaces of nonpositive curvature, but with the distinct quality that they are not complete as metric spaces. This amounts to the fact that they are modelled on a finite von Neumann algebra, and the metrics introduced arise from the trace of the algebra. In spite of the noncompleteness of these manifolds, their geometry can be studied from the view-point of metric geometry, and several techniques derived from the functional analysis are applied to gain insight on their geodesic structure.
In this paper we introduce a new family of icc groups $Γ$ which satisfy the following product rigidity phenomenon, discovered in [DHI16] (see also [dSP17]): all tensor product decompositions of the II$_1$ factor $L(Γ)$ arise only from the canonical direct product decompositions of the underlying group $Γ$. Our groups are assembled from certain HNN-extensions and amalgamated free products and include many remarkable groups studied throughout mathematics such as graph product groups, poly-amalgam groups, Burger-Mozes groups, Higman group, various integral two-dimensional Cremona groups, etc. As …
