We prove that under certain stability and smoothing properties of the semi-groups generated by the partial differential equations that we consider, manifolds left invariant by these flows persist under $C^1$ perturbation. In particular, we extend well known finite-dimensional results to the setting of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert manifold with a semi-group that leaves a submanifold invariant. We then study the persistence of global unstable manifolds of hyperbolic fixed-points, and as an application consider the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation under a fully discrete approximation. Finally, we apply our theory to the persistence of inertial manifolds for those PDEs which possess them. te
Given only a collection of points sampled from a Riemannian manifold embedded in a Euclidean space, in this paper we propose a new method to solve elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) supplemented with boundary conditions. Notice that the construction of triangulations on unknown manifolds can be both difficult and expensive, both in terms of computational and data requirements, our goal is to solve these problems without such constructions. Instead, we rely only on using the sample points to define quadrature formulas on the unknown manifold. Our main tool is the diffusion maps algo…
The goal of this paper is to investigate some rigidity properties of stable solutions of elliptic equations set on manifolds with boundary. We provide several types of results, according to the dimension of the manifold and the sign of its Ricci curvature.
Following \cite{B2}, we introduce a notion of para-products associated to a semi-group. We do not use Fourier transform arguments and the background manifold is doubling, endowed with a sub-laplacian structure. Our main result is a paralinearization theorem in a non-euclidean framework, with an application to the propagation of regularity for some nonlinear PDEs.
In this work we consider viscosity solutions to second order parabolic PDEs $u_{t}+F(t,x,u,du,d^{2}u)=0$ defined on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary conditions. We prove comparison, uniqueness and existence results for the solutions. Under the assumption that the manifold $M$ has nonnegative sectional curvature, we get the finest results. If one additionally requires $F$ to depend on $d^{2}u$ in a uniformly continuous manner, the assumptions on curvature can be thrown away.
These notes are devoted to the problem of finite-dimensional reduction for parabolic PDEs. We give a detailed exposition of the classical theory of inertial manifolds as well as various attempts to generalize it based on the so-called Mané projection theorems. The recent counterexamples which show that the underlying dynamics may be in a sense infinite-dimensional if the spectral gap condition is violated as well as the discussion on the most important open problems are also included.
In this paper, we study the formal solution space of a nonlinear PDE in a fiber bundle. To this end, we start with foundational material and introduce the notion of a pfd structure to build up a new concept of profinite dimensional manifolds. We show that the infinite jet space of the fiber bundle is a profinite dimensional manifold in a natural way. The formal solution space of the nonlinear PDE then is a subspace of this jet space, and inherits from it the structure of a profinite dimensional manifold, if the PDE is formally integrable. We apply our concept to scalar PDEs and prove a new cri…
We prove that a general class of nonlinear, non-autonomous ODEs in Fréchet spaces are close to ODEs in a specific normal form, where closeness means that solutions of the normal form ODE satisfy the original ODE up to a residual that vanishes up to any desired order. In this normal form, the centre, stable and unstable coordinates of the ODE are clearly separated, which allows us to define invariant manifolds of such equations in a robust way. In particular, our method empowers us to study approximate centre manifolds, given by solutions of ODEs that are central up to a desired, possibly nonze…
Partial differential equations with discrete (concentrated) state-dependent delays are studied. The existence and uniqueness of solutions with initial data from a wider linear space is proven first and then a subset of the space of continuously differentiable (with respect to an appropriate norm) functions is used to construct a dynamical system. This subset is an analogue of \textit{the solution manifold} proposed for ordinary equations in [H.-O. Walther, The solution manifold and $C\sp 1$-smoothness for differential equations with state-dependent delay, J. Differential Equations, {195}(1), (…
We provide in this work a semigroup approach to the study of singular PDEs, in the line of the paracontrolled approach developed recently by Gubinelli, Imkeller and Perkowski. Starting from a heat semigroup, we develop a functional calculus and introduce a paraproduct based on the semigroup, for which commutator estimates and Schauder estimates are proved, together with their paracontrolled extensions. This machinery allows us to investigate singular PDEs in potentially unbounded Riemannian manifolds under mild geometric conditions. As an illustration, we study the generalized parabolic Anders…
We prove a center manifold theorem for rough partial differential equations (rough PDEs). The class of rough PDEs we consider contains as a key subclass reaction-diffusion equations driven by nonlinear multiplicative noise, where the stochastic forcing is given by a $γ$-Hölder rough path, for $γ\in(1/3,1/2]$. Our proof technique relies upon the theory of rough paths and analytic semigroups in combination with a discretized Lyapunov-Perron-type method in a suitable scale of interpolation spaces. The resulting center manifold is a random manifold in the sense of the theory of random dynamical sy…
We study decay and compact support properties of positive and bounded solutions of $Δ_{p} u \geq Λ(u)$ on the exterior of a compact set of a complete manifold with rotationally symmetry. In the same setting, we also give a new characterization of stochastic completeness for the $p$-Laplacian in terms of a global $W^{1,p}$-regularity of such solutions. One of the tools we use is a nonlinear version of the Feller property which we investigate on general Riemannian manifolds and which we establish under integral Ricci curvature conditions.
Let $M$ be a manifold, $V$ be a vector field on $M$, and $B$ be a Banach space. For any fixed function $f:M\rightarrow B$ and any fixed complex number $λ$, we study Hyers-Ulam stability of the global differential equation $Vy=λy+f$.
We describe an efficient domain decomposition-based framework for nonlinear multiscale PDE problems. The framework is inspired by manifold learning techniques and exploits the tangent spaces spanned by the nearest neighbors to compress local solution manifolds. Our framework is applied to a semilinear elliptic equation with oscillatory media and a nonlinear radiative transfer equation; in both cases, significant improvements in efficacy are observed. This new method does not rely on detailed analytical understanding of the multiscale PDEs, such as their asymptotic limits, and thus is more vers…
In this paper we study the existence and linear stability of almost periodic solutions for a NLS equation on the circle with external parameters. Starting from the seminal result of Bourgain (2005) on the quintic NLS, we propose a novel approach allowing to prove in a unified framework the persistence of finite and infinite dimensional invariant tori, which are the support of the desired solutions. The persistence result is given through a rather abstract "counter-term theorem" `a la Herman, directly in the original elliptic variables without passing to action-angle ones. Our framework allows …
The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture states that, on every $n$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $, the isoperimetric inequality holds with Euclidean optimal constant, and any set attaining equality is necessarily isometric to a Euclidean ball. This conjecture was settled, with positive answer, for $n \le 4$. It was also shown that its validity in dimension $n$ ensures that every $p$-Sobolev inequality ($ 1 < p < n $) holds on $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Euclidean optimal constant. In this paper we address the problem of classifying all Cartan-Hadamard manifolds supporting an optimal fun…
In this paper, we consider the dynamics of solutions to complex-valued evolutionary partial differential equations (PDEs) and show existence of heteroclinic orbits from nontrivial equilibria to zero via computer-assisted proofs. We also show that the existence of unbounded solutions along unstable manifolds at the equilibrium follows from the existence of heteroclinic orbits. Our computer-assisted proof consists of three separate techniques of rigorous numerics: an enclosure of a local unstable manifold at the equilibria, a rigorous integration of PDEs, and a constructive validation of a trapp…
Reduced-order models of time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs) where the solution is assumed as a linear combination of prescribed modes are rooted in a well-developed theory. However, more general models where the reduced solutions depend nonlinearly on time varying parameters have thus far been derived in an ad hoc manner. Here, we introduce Reduced-order Nonlinear Solutions (RONS): a unified framework for deriving reduced-order models that depend nonlinearly on a set of time-dependent parameters. The set of all possible reduced-order solutions are viewed as a manifold immersed…
We describe some natural relations connecting contact geometry, classical Monge-Ampere equations and theory of singularities of solutions to nonlinear PDEs. They reveal the hidden meaning of Monge-Ampere equations and sheds new light on some aspects of contact geometry.
This article proposes a new approach based on finite-horizon parameterizing manifolds (PMs) for the design of low-dimensional suboptimal controllers to optimal control problems of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) of parabolic type. Given a finite horizon $[0,T]$ and a low-mode truncation of the PDE, a PM provides an approximate parameterization of the uncontrolled high modes by the controlled low ones so that the unexplained high-mode energy is reduced, in an $L^2$-sense, when this parameterization is applied. Analytic formulas of such PMs are derived by application of the metho…
In this paper, we establish the second order estimates of solutions to the first initial-boundary value problem for general Hessian type fully nonlinear parabolic equations on Riemannian manifolds. The techniques used in this article can work for a wide range of fully nonlinear PDEs under very general conditions.
Classical solutions to PDEs with discrete state-dependent delay are studied. We prove the well-posedness in a set $X_F$ which is an analogous to the solution manifold used for ordinary differential equations with state-dependent delay. We prove that the evolution operators are $C^1$-smooth on the solution manifold.
In this manuscript we consider semilinear PDEs, with a convex nonlinearity, in a sector-like domain. Using cylindrical coordinates $(r, θ, z)$, we investigate the shape of solutions whose derivative in $θ$ vanishes at the boundary. We prove that any solution with Morse index less than two must be either independent of $θ$ or strictly monotone with respect to $θ$. In the special case of a planar domain, the result holds in a circular sector as well as in an annular, and it can also be extended to a rectangular domain. The corresponding problem in higher dimensions is also considered, as well as…
The issue of symmetry and symmetry breaking is fundamental in all areas of science. Symmetry is often assimilated to order and beauty while symmetry breaking is the source of many interesting phenomena such as phase transitions, instabilities, segregation, self-organization, etc. In this contribution we review a series of sharp results of symmetry of nonnegative solutions of nonlinear elliptic differential equation associated with minimization problems on Euclidean spaces or manifolds. Nonnegative solutions of those equations are unique, a property that can also be interpreted as a rigidity re…
We are concerned with hyperbolic systems of order-one linear PDEs originated on non-characteristic manifolds. We put forward a simple but effective method of transforming such initial conditions to standard initial conditions (i.e. when the solution is specified at an initial moment of time). We then show how our method applies in fluid mechanics. More specifically, we present a complete solution to the problem of long waves run-up in inclined bays of arbitrary shape with nonzero initial velocity.
By coupling a Hamiltonian mechanical system with a linear Hamiltonian field theory one obtains an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system with regularizing nonlinearity, where the underlying phase space is given by the product of a finite-dimensional symplectic manifold with an infinite-dimensional linear symplectic Hilbert space. After our compactness results we continue our program for defining a Floer homology theory for this class of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Based on the presence of small divisors we introduce a new notion of nondegeneracy for time-periodic solutions which…
