An embedded cubic graph consisting of segments of geodesics such that the angles at any vertex are equal to $2π/3$ is a closed local minimal net. This net is regular if all segments of geodesics are equal. The problem of classification of closed local minimal nets on surfaces of constant negative curvature has been formulated in the context of the famous Plateau problem in the one-dimensional case.
In this paper we prove an asymptotic for $\sharp (W^r(g))$ as $g\to +\infty$ where $g$ is genus and $W^r(g)$ is the set of the regular single-face minimal nets on surfaces of curvature -1. Then we construct some examples of $f$-face regular nets, $f>1$.
We study discrete curvatures computed from nets of curvature lines on a given smooth surface, and prove their uniform convergence to smooth principal curvatures. We provide explicit error bounds, with constants depending only on properties of the smooth limit surface and the shape regularity of the discrete net.
We show that the discrete principal nets in quadrics of constant curvature that have constant mixed area mean curvature can be characterized by the existence of a Königs dual in a concentric quadric.
In this paper we define the class of constant affine mean curvature (CAMC) discrete asymptotic nets, which contains the well-known classes of affine spheres and affine minimal asymptotic nets. This class is defined by considering fields of compatible interpolating quadrics, i.e., quadrics that have common tangent planes at the edges of the net. We show that, for CAMC asymptotic nets, ruled discrete asymptotic nets is equivalent to ruled compatible interpolating quadrics. Moreover, we prove discrete counterparts of some known properties of the Demoulin transform of a smooth CAMC surface.
We study local and global approximations of smooth nets of curvature lines and smooth conjugate nets by respective discrete nets (circular nets and planar quadrilateral nets) with infinitesimal quads. It is shown that choosing the points of discrete nets on the smooth surface one can obtain second-order approximation globally. Also a simple geometric construction for approximate determination of principal directions of smooth surfaces is given.
We consider a general theory of curvatures of discrete surfaces equipped with edgewise parallel Gauss images, and where mean and Gaussian curvatures of faces are derived from the faces' areas and mixed areas. Remarkably these notions are capable of unifying notable previously defined classes of surfaces, such as discrete isothermic minimal surfaces and surfaces of constant mean curvature. We discuss various types of natural Gauss images, the existence of principal curvatures, constant curvature surfaces, Christoffel duality, Koenigs nets, contact element nets, s-isothermic nets, and interestin…
We present a 2x2 Lax representation for discrete circular nets of constant negative Gauß curvature. It is tightly linked to the 4D consistency of the Lax representation of discrete K-nets (in asymptotic line parametrization). The description gives rise to Bäcklund transformations and an associated family. All the members of that family -- although no longer circular -- can be shown to have constant Gauß curvature as well. Explicit solutions for the Bäcklund transformations of the vacuum (in particular Dini's surfaces and breather solutions) and their respective associated families are given.
Cyclidic nets are introduced as discrete analogs of curvature line parametrized surfaces and orthogonal coordinate systems. A 2-dimensional cyclidic net is a piecewise smooth $C^1$-surface built from surface patches of Dupin cyclides, each patch being bounded by curvature lines of the supporting cyclide. An explicit description of cyclidic nets is given and their relation to the established discretizations of curvature line parametrized surfaces as circular, conical and principal contact element nets is explained. We introduce 3-dimensional cyclidic nets as discrete analogs of triply-orthogona…
Asymptotic net is an important concept in discrete differential geometry. In this paper, we show that we can associate affine discrete geometric concepts to an arbitrary non-degenerate asymptotic net. These concepts include discrete affine area, mean curvature, normal and co-normal vector fields and cubic form, and they are related by structural and compatibility equations. We consider also the particular cases of affine minimal surfaces and affine spheres.
We study Christoffel and Darboux transforms of discrete isothermic nets in 4-dimensional Euclidean space: definitions and basic properties are derived. Analogies with the smooth case are discussed and a definition for discrete Ribaucour congruences is given. Surfaces of constant mean curvature are special among all isothermic surfaces: they can be characterized by the fact that their parallel constant mean curvature surfaces are Christoffel and Darboux transforms at the same time. This characterization is used to define discrete nets of constant mean curvature. Basic properties of discrete net…
In the first part, we give a self contained introduction to the theory of cyclic systems in n-dimensional space which can be considered as immersions into certain Grassmannians. We show how the (metric) geometries on spaces of constant curvature arise as subgeometries of Moebius geometry which provides a slightly new viewpoint. In the second part we characterize Guichard nets which are given by cyclic systems as being Moebius equivalent to 1-parameter families of linear Weingarten surfaces. This provides a new method to study families of parallel Weingarten surfaces in space forms. In particul…
We propose a unified definition for discrete analogues of constant mean curvature surfaces in spaces of constant curvature as a special case of discrete special isothermic nets. Bäcklund transformations and Lawson's correspondence are discussed. It is shown that the definition generalizes previous definitions and a construction for discrete cmc surfaces of revolution in space forms is provided.
In this paper are studied the nets of principal curvature lines on surfaces embedded in Euclidean $3-$space near their end points, at which the surfaces tend to infinity. This is a natural complement and extension to smooth surfaces of the work of Garcia and Sotomayor (1996), devoted to the study of principal curvature nets which are structurally stable -- do not change topologically-- under small perturbations on the coefficients of the equations defining algebraic surfaces. This paper goes one step further and classifies the patterns of the most common and stable behaviors at the ends, prese…
Discrete linear Weingarten surfaces in space forms are characterized as special discrete $Ω$-nets, a discrete analogue of Demoulin's $Ω$-surfaces. It is shown that the Lie-geometric deformation of $Ω$-nets descends to a Lawson transformation for discrete linear Weingarten surfaces, which coincides with the well-known Lawson correspondence in the constant mean curvature case.
We refine the affine classification of real nets of quadrics in order to obtain generic curvature loci of regular $3$-manifolds in $\mathbb{R}^6$ and singular corank $1$ $3$-manifolds in $\mathbb{R}^5$. For this, we characterize the type of the curvature locus by the number and type of solutions of a system of equations given by 4 ternary cubics (which is a determinantal variety in some cases). We also study how singularities of the curvature locus of a regular 3-manifold can go to infinity when the manifold is projected orthogonally in a tangent direction.
In this paper we are interested in defining affine structures on discrete quadrangular surfaces of the affine three-space. We introduce, in a constructive way, two classes of such surfaces, called respectively indefinite and definite surfaces. The underlying meshes for indefinite surfaces are asymptotic nets satisfying a non-degeneracy condition, while the underlying meshes for definite surfaces are non-degenerate conjugate nets satisfying a certain natural condition. In both cases we associate to any of these nets several discrete affine invariant quantities: a metric, a normal and a co-norma…
We prove that a geodesic net with three boundary (= unbalanced) vertices on a non-positively curved plane has at most one balanced vertex. We do not assume any a priori bound for the degrees of unbalanced vertices. The result seems to be new even in the Euclidean case. We demonstrate by examples that the result is not true for metrics of positive curvature on the plane, and that there are no immediate generalizations of this result for geodesic nets with four unbalanced vertices.
Classically, isothermic surfaces are characterized as those surfaces which are "divisible into infinitesimal squares by their curvature lines". This characterization is the direct analogue to the definition of discrete isothermic nets. In order to understand the relations between the discrete and the smooth theory better, it is described how to give the classical characterization a rigorous meaning in the sense of modern differential geometry.
We define systems of pre-extremals for the energy functional of regular rheonomic Lagrange manifolds and show how they induce well-defined Hamilton orthogonal nets. Such nets have applications in the modelling of e.g. wildfire spread under time- and space-dependent conditions. The time function inherited from such a Hamilton net induces in turn a time-independent Finsler metric - we call it the associated frozen metric. It is simply obtained by inserting the time function from the net into the given Lagrangean. The energy pre-extremals then become ordinary Finsler geodesics of the frozen metri…
We consider regular surfaces $M$ that are given as the zeros of a polynomial function $p:R^3\rightarrow R$, where the gradient of $p$ vanishes nowhere. We assume that $M$ has non-zero mean curvature and prove that there exist only two examples of such surfaces, namely the sphere and the circular cylinder.
Inspired by the idea of Colding-Minicozzi in [CM1], we define (mean curvature flow) entropy for submanifolds in a general ambient Riemannian manifold. In particular, this entropy is equivalent to area growth of a closed submanifold in a closed ambient manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature. Moreover, this entropy is monotone along the mean curvature flow in a closed Riemannian manifold with non-negative sectional curvatures and parallel Ricci curvature. As an application, we show the partial regularity of the limit of mean curvature flow of surfaces in a three dimensional Riemannian manifo…
In this paper we consider surfaces of class $C^1$ with continuous prescribed mean curvature in a three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifold and prove that their characteristic curves are of class $C^2$. This regularity result also holds for critical points of the sub-Riemannian perimeter under a volume constraint. All results are valid in the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$.
The well known formulas express the curvature and the torsion of a curve in $R^3$ in terms of euclidean invariants of its derivatives. We obtain expressions of this kind for all curvatures of curves in $R^n$. It follows that a curve in $R^n$ is determined up to an isometry by the norms of its n derivatives. We extend these observations to curves in arbitrary riemannian manifolds.
It is known that a closed collapsed Riemannian $n$-manifold $(M,g)$ of bounded Ricci curvature and Reifenberg local covering geometry admits a nilpotent structure in the sense of Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov with respect to a smoothed metric $g(t)$. We prove that a canonical nilpotent structure over a regular limit space that describes the collapsing of original metric $g$ can be defined and uniquely determined up to a conjugation, and prove that the nilpotent structures arising from nearby metrics $g_ε$ with respect to $g_ε$'s sectional curvature bound are equivalent to the canonical one.
In this survey results on the behavior of simple closed geodesics on regular tetrahedra in three-dimensional spaces of constant curvature are presented.
By Hall's marriage theorem, we study lower bounds of the Lin-Lu-Yau curvature of amply regular graphs with girth $3$ or $4$ under different parameter restrictions. As a consequence, we show that each conference graph has positive Lin-Lu-Yau curvature. Our approach also provides a geometric proof of a classical diameter estimate for amply regular graphs in the case of girth $4$ and some special cases of girth $3$.
We study a modified notion of Ollivier's coarse Ricci curvature on graphs introduced by Lin, Lu, and Yau in [11]. We establish a rigidity theorem for complete graphs that shows a connected finite simple graph is complete if and only if the Ricci curvature is strictly greater than one. We then derive explicit Ricci curvature formulas for strongly regular graphs in terms of the graph parameters and the size of a maximal matching in the core neighborhood. As a consequence we are able to derive exact Ricci curvature formulas for strongly regular graphs of girth 4 and 5 using elementary methods. An…
In this paper we prove a convergence result for sequences of Willmore immersions with simple minimal bubbles. To this end we replace the total curvature control in T. Rivière's proof of the $\varepsilon$-regularity for Willmore immersions by a control of the local Willmore energy.
We prove that there are no regular algebraic hypersurfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{n+1}$, $n\geq 2$, defined by polynomials of odd degree. Also we prove that the hyperspheres and the round cylinders are the only regular algebraic hypersurfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$, $n\geq 2$, defined by polynomials of degree less than or equal to three. These results give partial answers to a question raised by Barbosa and do Carmo.
We consider properties of the total absolute geodesic curvature functional on circle immersions into a Riemann surface. In particular, we study its behavior under regular homotopies, its infima in regular homotopy classes, and the homotopy types of spaces of its local minima. We consider properties of the total curvature functional on the space of 2-sphere immersions into 3-space. We show that the infimum over all sphere eversions of the maximum of the total curvature during an eversion is at most 8πand we establish a non-injectivity result for local minima.
On simple geodesic disks of constant curvature, we derive new functional relations for the geodesic X-ray transform, involving a certain class of elliptic differential operators whose ellipticity degenerates normally at the boundary. We then use these relations to derive sharp mapping properties for the X-ray transform and its corresponding normal operator. Finally, we discuss the possibility of theoretically rigorous regularized inversions for the X-ray transform when defined on such manifolds.
We review recent work on the local geometry and optimal regularity of Lorentzian manifolds with bounded curvature. Our main results provide an estimate of the injectivity radius of an observer, and a local canonical foliations by CMC (Constant Mean Curvature) hypersurfaces, together with spatially harmonic coordinates. In contrast with earlier results based on a global bound for derivatives of the curvature, our method requires only a sup-norm bound on the curvature near the given observer.
We prove existence and uniqueness of the motion by curvatureof networks in $\mathbb{R}^n$ when the initial datum is of class $W^{2-\frac{2}{p}}_p$, with triple junction where the unit tangent vectors to the concurring curves form angles of $120$ degrees. Moreover we investigated the regularization effect due to the parabolic nature of the system. An application of this wellposedness result is a new proof of Theorem 3.18 in "Motion by Curvature of Planar Networks" by Mantegazza-Novaga-Tortorelli where the possible behaviors of the solutions at the maximal time of existence are described. Our st…
Mean curvature flow of clusters of n-dimensional surfaces in R^{n+k} that meet in triples at equal angles along smooth edges and higher order junctions on lower dimensional faces is a natural extension of classical mean curvature flow. We call such a flow a mean curvature flow with triple edges. We show that if a smooth mean curvature flow with triple edges is weakly close to a static union of three n-dimensional unit density half-planes, then it is smoothly close. Extending the regularity result to a class of integral Brakke flows, we show that this implies smooth short-time existence of the …
We consider the Kepler problem on surfaces of revolution that are homeomorphic to $S^2$ and have constant Gaussian curvature. We show that the system is maximally superintegrable, finding constants of motion that generalize the Runge-Lentz vector. Then, using such first integrals, we determine the class of surfaces that lead to block-regularizable collision singularities. In particular we show that the singularities are always regularizable if the surfaces are spherical orbifolds of revolution with constant curvature.
