We develop Teichmuller theoretical methods to construct new minimal surfaces in $\BE^3$ by adding handles and planar ends to existing minimal surfaces in $\BE^3$. We exhibit this method on an interesting class of minimal surfaces which are likely to be embedded, and have a low degree Gaußmap for their genus; the (Weierstrass data) period problem for these surfaces is of arbitrary dimension.
In particular, we exhibit a two-parameter family of complete minimal surfaces in the Euclidean three-space $\BE^3$ which generalize the breakthrough minimal surface of C. Costa; these new surfaces are embedded (at least) outside a compact set, and are indexed (roughly) by the number of ends they have and their genus. They have at most eight self-symmetries despite being of arbitrarily large genus, and are interesting for a number of reasons. Moreover, our methods also extend to prove that some natural candidate classes of surfaces cannot be realized as minimal surfaces in $\BE^3$. As a result of both aspects of this work, we obtain a classification of a family of surfaces as either realizable or unrealizable as minimal surfaces.
We define a geometric flow that is designed to change surfaces of cylindrical type spanning two disjoint boundary curves into solutions of the Douglas-Plateau problem of finding minimal surfaces with given boundary curves. We prove that also in this new setting and for arbitrary initial data, solutions of the Teichmüller harmonic map flow exist for all times. Furthermore, for solutions for which a three-point-condition does not degenerate as $t\to\infty$, we show convergence along a sequence $t_i\to\infty$ to a critical point of the area given either by a minimal cylinder or by two minimal dis…
An almost Fuchsian 3-manifold is a quasi-Fuchsian manifold which contains an incompressible closed minimal surface with principal curvatures in the range of $(-1,1)$. Such a 3-manifold $M$ admits a foliation of parallel surfaces, whose locus in Teichmüller space is represented as a path $γ$, we show that $γ$ joins the conformal structures of the two components of the conformal boundary of $M$. Moreover, we obtain an upper bound for the Teichmüller distance between any two points on $γ$, in particular, the Teichmüller distance between the two components of the conformal boundary of $M$, in term…
We use minimal (or CMC) surfaces to describe 3-dimensional hyperbolic, anti-de Sitter, de Sitter or Minkowski manifolds. We consider whether these manifolds admit ``nice'' foliations and explicit metrics, and whether the space of these metrics has a simple description in terms of Teichmüller theory. In the hyperbolic settings both questions have positive answers for a certain subset of the quasi-Fuchsian manifolds: those containing a closed surface with principal curvatures at most 1. We show that this subset is parameterized by an open domain of the cotangent bundle of Teichmüller space. Thes…
This paper develops a theory of Lipschitz comparisons of hyperbolic surfaces analogous to the theory of quasi-conformal comparisons. Extremal Lipschitz maps (minimal stretch maps) and geodesics for the `Lipschitz metric' are constructed. The extremal Lipschitz constant equals the maximum ratio of lengths of measured laminations, which is attained with probability one on a simple closed curve. Cataclysms are introduced, generalizing earthquakes by permitting more violent shearing in both directions along a fault. Cataclysms provide useful coordinates for Teichmuller space that are convenient fo…
We prove that compact 3-manifolds $M$ of constant curvature +1 with boundary a minimal surface are locally naturally parametrized by the conformal class of the boundary metric $γ$ in the Teichmuller space of $\partial M$, when $genus(\partial M) \geq 2$. Stronger results are obtained in the case of genus 1 boundary, giving in particular a new proof of Brendle's solution of the Lawson conjecture. The results generalize to constant mean curvature surfaces, and surfaces in flat and hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
The conformal parameterisation of a minimal surface is harmonic. Therefore, a minimal surface is a critical point of both the energy functional and the area functional. In this paper, we compare the Morse index of a minimal surface as a critical point of the area functional with its Morse index as a critical point of the energy functional. The difference between these indices is at most the real dimension of Teichmuller space. This comparison allows us to obtain surprisingly good upper bounds on the index of minimal surfaces of finite total curvature in Euclidean space of any dimension. We als…
In this paper, we build properly embedded singly periodic minimal surfaces which have infinite total curvature in the quotient by the period. These surfaces are constructed by adding a handle to the toroidal half-plane layers defined by H. Karcher. The technics that use is to solve a Jenkins-Serrin problem over a strip domain and to consider the conjugate minimal surface to the graph.
A theorem on the existence of the unique minimal topologic handle decomposition of differentiable simply connected five-dimensional manifolds is proved. For a decomposition of this sort, the number of handles of each index is given.
Let $S$ be a closed surface of genus at least $2$. For each maximal representation $ρ: π_1(S)\rightarrow\mathsf{Sp}(4,\mathbb{R})$ in one of the $2g-3$ exceptional connected components, we prove there is a unique conformal structure on the surface in which the corresponding equivariant harmonic map to the symmetric space $\mathsf{Sp}(4,\mathbb{R})/\mathsf{U}(2)$ is a minimal immersion. Using a Higgs bundle parameterization of these components, we give a mapping class group invariant parameterization of such components as fiber bundles over Teichmüller space. Unlike Labourie's recent results on…
There exist two new embedded minimal surfaces, asymptotic to the helicoid. One is periodic, with quotient (by orientation-preserving translations) of genus one. The other is nonperiodic of genus one.
We show the existence of 1-parameter families of non-periodic, complete, embedded minimal surfaces in euclidean space with infinitely many parallel planar ends. In particular we are able to produce finite genus examples and quasi-periodic examples of infinite genus.
We prove the existence of a family of embedded doubly periodic minimal surfaces of (quotient) genus $g$ with orthogonal ends that generalizes the classical doubly periodic surface of Scherk and the genus-one Scherk surface of Karcher. The proof of the family of immersed surfaces is by induction on genus, while the proof of embeddedness is by the conjugate Plateau method.
We use an elliptic differential equation of Tzitzeica type to construct a minimal Lagrangian surface in CH2 from the data of a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface and a small holomorphic cubic differential. The minimal Lagrangian surface is invariant under an SU(2,1) action of the fundamental group. We further parameterise a neighborhood of the R-Fuchsian representations in the representation space by pairs consisting of a point in Teichmuller space and a small cubic differential. By constructing a fundamental domain, we show these representations are complex-hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian, thus rec…
We consider the question of existence of embedded doubly periodic minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space with Scherk-type ends, surfaces that topologically are Scherk's doubly periodic surface with handles added in various ways. We extend the existence results of H. Karcher and F. Wei to more cases, and we find other cases where existence does not hold.
We find bounds for Weil-Petersson holomorphic sectional curvature, and the Weil-Petersson curvature operator in several regimes, that do not depend on the topology of the underlying surface. Among other results, we show that the minimal (most negative) eigenvalue of the curvature operator at any point in the Teichmüller space $\Teich(S_g)$ of a closed surface $S_g$ of genus $g$ is uniformly bounded away from zero. Restricting to a thick part of $\Teich(S_g)$, we show that the minimal eigenvalue is uniformly bounded below by an explicit constant which does not depend on the topology of the surf…
We show that the first eigenvalue of a closed Riemannian surface normalized by the area can be strictly increased by attaching a cylinder or a cross cap. As a consequence we obtain the existence of maximizing metrics for the normalized first eigenvalue on any closed surface of fixed topological type. Since these metrics are induced by (possibly branched) minimal immersions into spheres, we find new examples of immersed minimal surfaces in spheres.
For each integer $k \geq 2$, we apply gluing methods to construct sequences of minimal surfaces embedded in the round $3$-sphere. We produce two types of sequences, all desingularizing collections of intersecting Clifford tori. Sequences of the first type converge to a collection of $k$ Clifford tori intersecting with maximal symmetry along these two circles. Near each of the circles, after rescaling, the sequences converge smoothly on compact subsets to a Karcher-Scherk tower of order $k$. Sequences of the second type desingularize a collection of the same $k$ Clifford tori supplemented by an…
Let $(M,g)$ be a closed oriented Riemannian $3$-manifold and suppose that there is a strongly irreducible Heegaard splitting $H$. We prove that $H$ is either isotopic to a minimal surface of index at most one or isotopic to the stable oriented double cover of a non-orientable minimal surface with a vertical handle attached. In particular, this proves a result conjectured by Rubinstein. Some consequences include the existence in any $\mathbb{R}P^3$ of either a minimal torus or a minimal projective plane with stable universal cover. In the case of positive scalar curvature, it is shown for spher…
We add two new 1-parameter families to the short list of known embedded triply periodic minimal surfaces of genus 4 in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Both surfaces can be tiled by minimal pentagons with two straight segments and three planar symmetry curves as boundary. In one case (which has the appearance of the CLP surface of Schwarz with an added handle) the two straight segments are parallel, while they are orthogonal in the second case. The second family has as one limit the Costa surface, showing that this limit can occur for triply periodic minimal surfaces. For the existence proof we solve the 1-dim…
The paper introduces a number of new techniques to handle minimal hyersurface singularities. In particular, they allow to extend the obstruction theory for postive scalr curvature to any dimension.
Unstable minimal surfaces are the unstable stationary points of the Dirichlet-Integral. In order to obtain unstable solutions, the method of the gradient flow together with the minimax-principle is generally used. The application of this method for minimal surfaces in the Euclidean spacce was presented in \cite{s3}. We extend this theory for obtaining unstable minimal surfaces in Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we handle minimal surfaces of annulus type, i.e. we prescribe two Jordan curves of class $C^3$ in a Riemannian manifold and prove the existence of unstable minimal surfaces of annu…
It has been shown in by Huang-Lucia-Tarantello [17] that, for given $\vert c \vert <1$, the moduli space of constant mean curvature (CMC) $c$-immersions of a closed orientable surface of genus $\mathfrak{g} \geq 2$ into a hyperbolic $3$-manifold can be parametrized by elements of the tangent bundle of the corresponding Teichmüller space. This is attained by showing the unique solvability of the Gauss-Codazzi equations governing (CMC) c-immersions. The corresponding unique solution is identified as the global minimum (and only critical point) of the Donaldson functional $D_t$ (introduced in [11…
