A set X subseteq R is strongly meager if for every measure zero set H, X+H not= R. Let SM denote the collection of strongly meager sets. We show that assuming CH, SM is not an ideal.
We prove the following theorem: For a partially ordered set Q such that every countable subset has a strict upper bound, there is a forcing notion satisfying ccc such that, in the forcing model, there is a basis of the meager ideal of the real line which is order-isomorphic to Q with respect to set-inclusion. This is a variation of Hechler's classical result in the theory of forcing.
We show that the following are consistent with ZFC: 1. Strongly meager sets form an ideal with the same additivity as the ideal of meager sets. 2. There exists a strong measure zero set of size > d (dominating number).
We show that if the real line is the disjoint union of kappa meager sets such that every meager set is contained in a countable union of them, then kappa = omega_1. This answers a question addressed by J. Cichon. We also prove two theorems saying roughly that any attempt to produce the isomorphism type of the meager ideal in the Cohen real and the random real extensions must fail. All our results hold for "meager" replaced by "null", as well.
We show that the set of the ground-model reals has strong measure zero (is strongly meager) after adding a single Cohen real (random real). As consequence we prove that the set of the ground-model reals has strong measure zero after adding a single Hechler real.
The paper contains two results pointing to the lack of symmetry between measure and category. Assume CH. There exists a strongly meager subset of the Cantor set that can be mapped onto the Cantor set by a uniformly continuous function. (It is well known that uniformly continuous image of a strongly null set is strongly null). A ZFC version of this result is also given.
Following Darji, we say that a Borel subset $B$ of an abelian Polish group $G$ is Haar meager if there is a compact metric space $K$ and a continuous function $f : K \to G$ such that the preimage of the translate, $f^{-1}(B+g)$ is meager in $K$ for every $g \in G$. The set $B$ is called strongly Haar meager if there is a compact set $C \subseteq G$ such that $(B+g) \cap C$ is meager in $C$ for every $g \in G$. The main open problem in this area is Darji's question asking whether these two notions are the same. Even though there have been several partial results suggesting a positive answer, in…
We study the relationship between the sigma-ideal generated by closed measure zero sets and the ideals of null and meager sets. We show that the additivity of the ideal of closed measure zero sets is not bigger than covering for category. As a consequence we get that the additivity of the ideal of closed measure zero sets is equal to the additivity of the ideal of meager sets.
We use the method of norms on possibilities to answer a question of Kunen and construct a ccc sigma --ideal on 2^omega with various closure properties and distinct from the ideal of null sets, the ideal of meager sets and their intersection.
We show that some set-theoretic assumptions (for example Martin's Axiom) imply that there is no translation invariant Borel hull operation on the family of Lebesgue null sets and on the family of meager sets in (in R^n). We also prove that if the meager ideal admits a monotone Borel hull operation, then there is also a monotone Borel hull operation on the sigma-algebra of sets with the property of Baire.
A separable metric space X is an H-null set if any uniformly continuous image of X has Hausdorff dimension zero. upper H-null, directed P-null and P-null sets are defined likewise, with other fractal dimensions in place of Hausdorff dimension. We investigate these sets and show that in 2^ω they coincide, respectively, with strongly null, meager-additive, T' and null-additive sets. Some consequences: A subset of 2^ω is meager-additive if and only if it is E-additive; if f:2^ω->2^ω is continuous and X is meager-additive, then so is f(X), and likewise for null-additive and T'-sets.
A subset $X$ of a Polish group $G$ is \emph{Haar null} if there exists a Borel probability measure $μ$ and a Borel set $B$ containing $X$ such that $μ(gBh)=0$ for every $g,h \in G$. A set $X$ is \emph{Haar meager} if there exists a compact metric space $K$, a continuous function $f : K \to G$ and a Borel set $B$ containing $X$ such that $f^{-1}(gBh)$ is meager in $K$ for every $g,h \in G$. We calculate (in $ZFC$) the four cardinal invariants ($\rm add$, $\rm cov$, $\rm non$, $\rm cof$) of these two $σ$-ideals for the simplest non-locally compact Polish group, namely in the case $G = \mathbb{Z}…
We prove the following theorem: For a partially ordered set Q such that every countable subset has a strict upper bound, there is a forcing notion satisfying ccc such that, in the forcing model, there is a basis of the null ideal of the real line which is order-isomorphic to Q with respect to set-inclusion. This is a variation of Hechler's classical result in the theory of forcing, and the statement of the theorem for the meager ideal has been already proved by Bartoszynski and the author.
We describe a simple machinery which translates results on algebraic sums of sets of reals into the corresponding results on their cartesian product. Some consequences are: 1. The product of a meager/null-additive set and a strong measure zero/strongly meager set in the Cantor space has strong measure zero/is strongly meager, respectively. 2. Using Scheepers' notation for selection principles: Sfin(Omega,Omega^gp)\cap S1(O,O)=S1(Omega,Omega^gp), and Borel's Conjecture for S1(Omega,Omega) (or just S1(Omega,Omega^gp)) implies Borel's Conjecture. These results extend results of Scheepers and Mill…
We ask whether $\mathbf{Δ^1_2}$ or $\mathbf{Σ^1_2}$ equivalence relations with $I$-small classes for $I$ a $σ$-ideal must have perfectly many classes. We show that for a wide class of ccc $σ$-ideals, a positive answer for $\mathbf{Δ^1_2}$ equivalence relations is equivalent to the $I$-measurability of $\mathbf{Δ^1_2}$ sets. However, the analogous statement for $\mathbf{Σ^1_2}$ equivalence relations is false: $\mathbf{Σ^1_2}$ equivalence relations with meager classes have a perfect set of pairwise inequivalent elements if and only if $\mathbf{Δ^1_2}$ sets have the Baire property.
We study Baire category for subsets of 2^omega that are downward-closed with respect to the almost-inclusion ordering (on the power set of the natural numbers, identified with 2^omega). We show that it behaves better in this context than for general subsets of 2^omega. In the downward-closed context, the ideal of meager sets is prime and b-complete (where b is the bounding number), while the complementary filter is g-complete (where g is the groupwise density cardinal). We also discuss other cardinal characteristics of this ideal and this filter, and we show that analogous results for measure …
We define the property of Pi_2-compactness of a statement phi of set theory, meaning roughly that the hard core of the impact of phi on combinatorics of aleph_1 can be isolated in a canonical model for the statement phi. We show that the following statements are Pi_2-compact: ``dominating number = aleph_1,'' ``cofinality of the meager ideal = aleph_1'', ``cofinality of the null ideal = aleph_1'', existence of various types of Souslin trees and variations on uniformity of measure and category = aleph_1. Several important new metamathematical patterns among classical statements of set theory are…
Let $X$ be a zero-dimensional compact metrizable space endowed with a strictly positive continuous Borel $σ$-additive measure $μ$ which is good in the sense that for any clopen subsets $U,V\subset X$ with $μ(U)<μ(V)$ there is a clopen set $W\subset V$ with $μ(W)=μ(U)$. We study $σ$-ideals with Borel base on $X$ which are invariant under the action of the group $H_μ(X)$ of measure-preserving homeomorphisms of $(X,μ)$, and show that any such $σ$-ideal $\mathcal I$ is equal to one of seven $σ$-ideals: $\{\emptyset\}$, $[X]^{\leω}$, $\mathcal E$, $\mathcal M\cap\mathcal N$, $\mathcal M$, $\mathcal…
We investigate families of subsets of $ω$ with almost disjoint refinements in the classical case as well as with respect to given ideals on $ω$. More precisely, we study the following topics and questions: 1) Examples of projective ideals. 2) We prove the following generalization of a result due to J. Brendle: If $V\subseteq W$ are transitive models, $ω_1^W\subseteq V$, $\mathcal{P}(ω)\cap V\not = \mathcal{P}(ω)\cap W$, and $\mathcal{I}$ is an analytic or coanalytic ideal coded in $V$, then there is an $\mathcal{I}$-almost disjoint refinement ($\mathcal{I}$-ADR) of $\mathcal{I}^+\cap V$ in $W$…
We provide solutions to several problems of Foreman about ideals, several of which are closely related to Mitchell's notion of \emph{strongly proper} forcing. We prove: 1) Presaturation of a normal ideal implies projective antichain catching, enabling us to provide a solution to a problem from Foreman~\cite{MR2768692} about ideal projections which is more comprehensive and simpler than the solution obtained in \cite{MR3343538}. 2) We solve an older question from Foreman~\cite{MR819932} about the relationship between generic hugeness and generic almost hugeness. 3) Finally, we provide solutions…
